Ep 167167 JARED SCHEFFLER - A Monster Public Land Kansas Longbow Whitetail: The Hunt - Whitetail Adrenaline
Jared Scheffler is one of the best deer hunters we've ever interviewed. His style, which is mostly spot and stalk, on the ground, public land, long bow hunting, has led to some of the most amazing deer hunting footage we've ever seen. In 2015 Jared took his largest whitetail to date and as the early deer season get into full gear in most parts of the US, we thought this would be a great story to inspire you to get out. It's an epic tale with lots of twists and turns that Jared masterfully details in his story. We decided to break it into two parts, so you'll have to wait until next week to hear the finale. Take lots of notes, Jared lays out some dandy tips in this episode. Ep 166166 TIM GAUTHIER - Swamp Buck Pinch Points, Hunting the Hunter, Ozone, and The ScentLok Enforcer
50 years of deer hunting has to account for something. That's half a century of deer hunting knowledge. How could we resist. Tim Gauthier has made a profession of taxidermy, hunting and filming wildlife, and now he's jumping to the retail business as he explores the benefits of ozone to the everyday deer hunter. Yes, Tim has experienced lots over the years and it's true, he used to climb into his treestands like a telephone lineman climbs to the top of a telephone pole. Tim says that the best place to hunt is often where the other hunters refuse to go, which why Tim loves to hunt the deep dark swamps where he hikes 3 miles to get to his favorite stand. According to Tim, the pinch points in a swamp are just as good as the pinch points in any mid-west open field. Once again, as we continue our exploration of the habits of world class deer hunters, we pick Tim's brain and finds out how he does it so you can too. Ep 165165 LEE & TIFFANY LAKOSKY - Mach 10, Velvet Bucks, Standing Corn Ground Blinds, and Tree Hinge Tactics
Sure, having your first baby might change things a bit, but the corn still needs to grow, the fields need to be seeded, the trees need to be cut, and life going any slower than Mach 10 just wouldn't seem normal. That's how Lee and Tiffany, our guests from Episode 050, like it. Tiffany has pulled back just a bit to take care of their son, but both Lee and Tiffany enjoy a fast paced country life. They say that when they're not on the road, they're home bodies and you'll never find them at a coffee shop (Lee doesn't drink coffee, and doesn't need to). Lee says that all the work is done by September on his endless acreage of farmed prime hunting land. In fact, Lee is so meticulous about created amazing deer habitat that his neighbors should thank him. We go deep with Lee and Tiffany on this show and talk everything from parenting, to hunting standing corn, to how to sneak into a field without detection, to hinge cutting trees for habitat, to building watering holes. Ep 164164 MICHAEL WADDELL - Strike Quick, Strike Hard, Hunt Smart - Origins of the Bone Collector & Early Deer Season Hunting Tactics
Michael Waddell never planned to be on television. He was like any other kid growing up in rural town USA. He hunted small game like every other kid. He fished for bass like every other kid. In fact, Michael says you we're considered odd if you didn't do these things. It wasn't until Michael became more passionate than others about certain aspects of the outdoors that he was noticed by the founders of Realtree. But even then it wasn't about being on television, it was more about being a guide and cameraman for those who already had their television host jobs locked down. It wasn't until Michael pitched an idea for a new show to the Realtree decision makers that he got his break. However, he never intended to be a host, it was just an idea. The rest is history. Michael Waddell prefers to be humble and gracious at all costs, despite his hectic lifestyle. He says that hunting is when he actually gets to relax and the rest of his life is absolutely chaotic (which makes sense being one of the most popular hunting personalities in America). We discuss the origins of the Bone Collector and early season deer hunting tactics. Ep 163163 NIKKI BOXLER - Deer Hunting New York Dairy Country, The Farmer's Daughter, Tractor Scouting, and Sap Wars
Dairy farming, mismatched camouflage, deer scouting from a tractor, maple syrup, and electricity from manure aren't exactly the things you'd think of these days when you think of Nikki Boxler. But, these items have been a part of Nikki's life for some time, and at her roots, these are the types of things that keep her grounded. Nikki says she really prefers the simple life and says that social media and television are exactly what we need less of in order to get back to the what really matters. However, despite enjoying life without wifi, Nikki recognizes that the internet is a crucial piece of society and communication with the world as she pursues careers in marketing, in and out of the outdoor industry. Nikki is an early riser and frequents her family farm for shooting, hunting, and peace of mind when she isn't being flown around the country for hunts sponsored by Winchester and Realtree. Ep 162162 TR WALTERS - A School Teachin' Deer Huntin' Machine from Southern Michigan
TR Walters is a school teachin', deer huntin' machine. When he's not in the classroom educating the children of Hickory Corners, Michigan he's out at the farm or in the woods teaching himself more about the idiosyncracies of his local deer herd. TR believes in planting both spring and fall food plots, endless observation of deer and deer habits, soaking his ground blinds months in advance of the hunt, and never carries a knife on a hunt (he says it's bad luck). As we continue our quest to identify the habits of high successful deer hunters, TR is our latest deer hunter breakdown. We discuss everything from treestands, to ground blind placement, from food plots, to scent cover, and much much more. Ep 161161 JIM KINSEY - Camera Man Jimmy, Making Music, Filming Endlessly, and Hunting the Big Sky Country
It was love at first kill. Jim Kinsey, former US Marine helicopter mechanic, writer, film maker, and hard core deer hunter, met Jana Waller (one of our favorite predators on the planet) in a ground blind on a turkey hunt. Does it get any better than that? Now, Jim spends much of his time behind the camera handling the filming and editing for the show Skull Bound on the Sportsman's Channel. Jim writes for various journals, the television show, and is now writing music for Nashville. Jim says despite the jump from medium to medium, story telling is story telling (and he's good at in by the way...). We go behind the scenes with Jim and find out what his life is really like, how he got there, and where he's going. And he tells one heck of a good deer story, so stay tuned it! Ep 160160 DOUG KOSTREVA - Building Your First Food Plot , Plant Now for October, Advanced Techniques, Weeds, Soil, Fertilizer, and Tonnage
Doug Kostreva doesn't get much sleep. A typical day starts at 4AM and doesn't end until after 9pm. Doug doesn't mind though. As a multi-generational farmer, Doug never stops thinking about how to make stuff grow better. If Doug isn't filling an order for a hunter eager to get their food plot off the ground, he's giving someone advice on how to make the best food plot of their life. As Doug says, you want to plant far enough ahead to give your plants maximum growth at the very moment you step into your treestand. This means planting in August to give the deer a buffet of greens to devour in October and November. Doug takes this stuff seriously and spends hours crafting the next best seed blend combination for various environments. We pick Doug's brain about everything from choosing a plot site, to weed killer, to fertilizer, to tonnage, to soil testing, nitrogen and much more. Ep 159159 SHANE MAHONEY - Conservation Matters & Wildlife - You Never Run Out of Lessons
Shane Mahoney is a world renown conservationist, hunter, and outdoorsman. There may not be another person on the planet that has done more for conservation efforts globally than Shane. Despite his efforts, Shane's opinion about the current state of conservation is not a good. As he says, you never run out of lessons with conservation and that the animals cannot speak for themselves. Conservation is a complex equation and carries with it extremely practical applications. Shane shares his opinions on hunting, of all varieties, why hunting should not come with an adjective, and gives us a history lesson about the conservation efforts as we know it today. Ep 158158 KELVIN WILCOX - VAPPLE - The Science Behind Quality Deer Attractants - Scents, Flavors, and Fillers
Vanillian. As a chemical formula, the organic compound looks something like this: C8H8O3. Combine this with an apple and you get something called Vapple. Neophobia: extreme or irrational fear or dislike of anything new, novel, or unfamiliar. Deer are the world's biggest neophobes if you think about it. And that's exactly what Kelvin Wilcox, deer hunter, creator, and founder of Vapple did. He thought about every little component that could and should go into an attractant, from the smells, to the fillers, to the flavors and made something that is perhaps the worlds best smelling deer attractant and neophobe antidote. Kelvin's original quest was to make a wind checker powder that smelled like something a deer would like to eat. He accomplished that and moved onto an additive attractant, soaps, blinds, and cover scents, and scent eliminators. Each product carries the Vapple quality and formulation that keeps the brand consistent. This show is about something you've never heard about, but we're guessing you will smell it before the end of the year. Ep 157157 KYLE ROSNER - "That Snow Turned Red in a Hurry", Action TrackChair Deer Hunting, Wisconsin Corn Fields and Cedar Swamps
There was no joking around for Kyle Rosner on April's Fools Day not too long ago. After an event that would change his life forever, Kyle finds himself bound to a chair, but to Kyle, it's just the beginning of a new life path for the young outdoorsman from Wisconsin. Kyle is a long time waterfowl and turned his focus more on bow hunting with a crossbow after becoming paralyzed. "You take the little things for granted", Kyle says. Kyle is upbeat, lives and breaths deer hunting, and is killing large Wisconsin bucks. He encourages everyone to not let obstacles stand in your way despite how large they appear. Kyle now deer hunts from an Action Trackchair and routinely fishes from a boat that he has modified to his liking. This is Kyle's story. Ep 156156 JEREMY BALLANTINE & JOHNNY BROWN - In Pursuit 365 Deer Hunting the Northeast, Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Mid-West
It all started with a deer hunt and a camera. At age 14, who thinks to video record their hunts? Jeremy Ballantine did just that and now he owns and operates a hunting videography company after some inspiration from Tom Blais, a great northeast videographer in his own right. Based in Vermont, In Pursuit 365 is comprised of a core group, specifically Jeremy and his hardcore hunting partner from New Hampshire, Johnny Brown. Each have their own techniques that they engage in, but one thing is certain, each love the pursuit of the hunt and everything it teaches. Both openly admit that hunting the big mountains of the west is their preferred setting, but home is New England. We sit down with Jeremy and Johnny in our first ever outdoor recording studio surrounded by the woods, old license plates, and European skulls mounts. Once again we dissect once the habits of world class deer hunters, this time it's about deer hunting in New England and a little mid-west and big mountain of the west). Fred Eichler has been deer hunting whitetail and other big game with a bow and arrow since he was a kid, but today he is more known as a multi-state international predator hunter. As we continue our pursuit to dissect world class hunters and expose the habits that make them successful, Fred is our latest guest. We learn how he uses his predator and hunting and trapping skills to hone his deer and elk hunting skills. We also discuss several of the common mistakes that predator hunters make and how to correct those mistakes. And, we talk traditional bow hunting and why Fred feels it is the ultimate way to take down big game species. But it's not all straight forward, there are some tips and tricks that Fred uses to get those 26 yard shots frequently. Ep 154154 KRISTY TITUS - Big Game Hunting Fitness, Diet, Exercise, Big Country Training and Mindset
Hunting the big mountains of the west is demanding, physically and mentally. You can travel to the spot, but when the hunt is on, you need to kick into high gear. On a hunt, Kristy Titus needed that extra gear when it counted most, but couldn't get there. She says, "I was so gassed that I was tasting blood". She was the overweight non-athlete and she was out of shape. It wasn't fun. This self realization set the stage for years to come. Kristy vowed to herself to never let anything like that happen again and today Kristy is always in shape for hunting the big mountains. It's become a life style of dieting, exercise, mindset and even body building for competition. This is the result of a desire to keep pace with the demands of hunting big game on big mountains. Ep 153153 DR KEN NORDBERG Part II - Whitetail Hunter's Almanac 2nd Edition - The 5 Phases of the Rut
We pick up where we left off, at Phase II of the rut, as described by Dr. Ken Nordberg. This show covers Phases II through V. Dr Nordberg wrote a book in the 1980s called Whitetail Hunter's Almanac that is considered by many as the deer hunting bible. Today there are 9 (soon to be 10) editions of the Almanac, each sharing some fascinating insight into the world of the whitetail deer and how to hunt them. Dr Nordberg, otherwise known as "Doc", used to spend over 4000 hours a year studying the whitetail. Interestingly enough, Dr. Nordberg's deer hunting strategy has changed over the years as he recognized new patterns in whitetail behavior relative to hunting. This show is for the beginner and the advanced hunter. When an wrench hits, plans change. For Charles Byrum, when surgery failed leaving him less mobile, it put a serious damper on his spot and stalk style of California deer hunting. So, instead of staying put and wishing he could continue his passion, Charles did what any die hard deer hunter would do, he moved to Iowa! The terrain and techniques are different, but Charles is still getting it done in the deer woods (and is now shooting bigger deer by the way). Jim Shockey, now 58 years young, has made a career of hunting for over 30 years now. Most would say he is one of most recognized and influential hunters of our time. Eva, his daughter, now 28 years old, has been following in Jim's footsteps but is, arguably, more recognized than Jim considering the number of Eva's social media followers. Eva has now entered into a new phase of her hunting career and life as she has broken away from the nest. Jim's start was far more humble than you might think- hunting was a means to food on the table, nothing more, and his deer camp as a child was a mobile home park he called home. Ep 146146 AL MORRIS Fox Pro - Part II: Advanced Coyote Hunting Strategies for Spring and Summer
Coyotes Kill Deer Fawns and Hurt the Deer Herd. As deer hunters we have an obligation to hunt coyotes all year round, not to eliminated them, but to control them in order to let the buck fawn live and eventually seed a healthier deer herd to include a healthy supply of bucks. In our last show with Al, (Episode 138 www.BigBuckRegistry.com/almorrisfoxpro ) ,Al discussed many of the basic aspects of how-to coyote hunting. Ep 144144 MICHAEL PITTS - Michael Waddell's Mentor, Fire Fighter, Master Bowman, Realtree and Part-Time Comedian
You might have seen Realtree's video of Michael Pitts asking some pretty overly straight forward questions of Michael Waddell, Nick Mundt, and Travis T-Bone Turner from this year's ATA event. He is decidedly the thorn in Michael Waddell's side and that one person by which no celebrity hunter wants to be interviewed. So, we tracked him down to find out who the real Michael Pitts is - turns out he's an master bowman and bow technician, a full time fire fighter, a Realtree Prostaff, and now, part-time comedian. Michael walks us through his character, and often breaks into character as he details his elite hunter training facility that his has put together for his students. Ep 143143 CHAD EUBANKS - An Argument for High Fence Hunting, Timber Company Deer Leases, and Louisiana Public Hunting
Chad Eubanks has spent a lifetime hunting in Louisiana, both on public and private leased timber company property. Chad's biggest pet peeve is when one hunter disrespects another. To avoid poachers and trespassers and those hunters that disrespect other hunters, Chad has turned his sights on high fence hunting. As many scream "high fence" on any big buck Facebook photo post, Chad has found sanctuary and a comfort in not what the fence keeps in, but what it keeps out. Chad discusses the pros and cons of high fence deer hunting in Missouri versus private leased land and public land hunting in Louisiana. Ep 142142 TAGNBRAG REVISITED: David & Dean Giarrizzo - Food Plots, Hunting Ohio, New York & North Dakota, Clover Turnips & Tonnage
It's been almost 2 years since we last talked to David and Dean Giarrizzo from Tag-N-Brag TV as we continue our mission to revisit old friends of the Big Buck Registry (FOBBR). David and Dean are brothers continuing to pursue their passion: to be professional hunters. They aren't making a bunch of money, but they are making a living and doing what they love. A little older now, the boys of Tag-N-Brag are coming of age and we have to say, they seem more mature in many ways, but they still have fun in the deer woods and know how connect with younger hunters (which we think is extremely important). From food plots and soil sampling in New York to early season deer hunting in North Dakota, Dean and David are living their dream. We caught up with some old friends, Shawn Luchtel and Michael Hunsucker from Heartland Bowhunter in this show. They appeared originally on the Big Buck Deer Hunting Podcast in Show #062 on August 30, 2014. Time flies. Managing a farm in Northern Missouri is a full time job as creating a better habitat for wild grasses and wild game is never ending. Food plots were once the focus, but now Shawn and Michael have added prescribed burns and timber management to the overall land management strategy. Ep 140140 CAMERON COBLE - The Average Joe Blue-Collar Deer Hunter - Public Deer Hunting Strategies for Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois
Meet Cameron Coble, the self-proclaimed average-Joe blue-collar deer hunter. We believe that some of the best deer hunters in America aren't flashy, don't want to be, and they often keep to themselves. When we have an opportunity to speak to someone like Cameron, we jump on it. Hunters like Cameron often hold some of the most amazing perspectives on deer hunting and it's like tapping into a over-ripe maple tree filled with the nectar of unique deer tips and hunting strategies. Cameron focuses his hunting on public ground in some of the most ripe deer states in the US- Iowa, Indiana, and Kansas. He is also setting his sights on Ohio in the near future. We thank Cameron for spending over and hour with us as we breakdown his day to day hunting strategies! Nick Mundt is on the road 300 days out of the year. Technically, Nick is in the woods most of those days, either hunting or filming someone else hunting. Nick is a professional hunter, trained hunting guide, and a licensed barber- no joke - (Nick packs his scissors with him when traveling and will trim Michael Waddell's hair when necessary- it's always good to travel with your own barber). But how did Nick get to where he is today? Is having the freedom to be in the woods most of the year worth more than money? We think so, and so does Nick Mundt. Ep 138138 BIG AL MORRIS - Killin' Coyotes, Thinning the Pack, Helping the Deer Herd, FoxPro
Coyotes can decimate a deer herd, especially buck fawns, according to scientific studies. You might think that killing all coyotes in the answer, but it's actually counterintuitive. Coyotes are extremely resilient and will self regulate, but over killing them can actually trigger a biological event resulting in high pup crops. Regardless, hammering coyote packs and reducing numbers in your deer hunting areas will only help your cause. Al Morris from FoxPro is an expert coyote hunter and helps us breakdown and dissect this essential aspect of hunting, from beginner to intermediate levels. Ep 137137 ADAM LEWIS - The Study of Sound in the Deer Woods, What Deer Hear, & How to Adjust Your Hunt
As deer hunters, we often try to be quiet in the woods so as not to spook the deer, but why? What do we really know about the sounds we make? Not many studies have been done on sound in the deer woods, but Adam Lewis, a physics teacher by trade, is determined to change that. He created a company called Sound Barrier Hunting that researches and tests those sounds that hunters commonly make and the results may not be what you thought. How far does a metal on metal clang travel and will that particular sound decrease your odds of scoring big on a deer hunt? Adams explains all this and more! Ep 136136 GEM CEASAR - 17, Deer Hunting Louisiana, and Swamp Bottom Media
It all started with an 8 megapixel camera and a flock of blackbirds. A good job and some savings later, Gem was on his way to purchase better video capture equipment for all of Gem's deer hunting, duck hunting, turkey hunting, or whatever Gem decides to hunt. Whatever is game may be, one thing is for sure, Gem's camera work is outstanding. He thinks of every hunting set in two ways, how can I get the shot (for the kill) and how can I get the shot (for the camera). And, oh by the way, he's only 17 years old. Ep 135135 MIKE KAFKA - NFL Quarterback, Newbie Hunter, Deer Hunting Q & A for the BBR, and Super Bowl 50 Predictions
Can the eyes of a quarterback indicate where the ball will be thrown? Is luck a random chance? Or is it actually the by-product of hard work and hours of preparation? Mike Kafka can tell you that hard work and preparation is the key to reaching higher levels of success and that it's the turn of the head, not the eyes, that will often indicate to a defender where the ball is going to be thrown. Mike, a newbie hunter, has spent several years in the National Football League playing the Quarterback position and is now setting his eyes on a new venture, deer hunting. It started with a specialized handwarming pouch that Mike flys under the flag of a company he started called Roo Outdoors, but in the process his interest in hunting has grown Mike is able to draw correlation between preparing for a NFL football game and preparing for a deer hunt. Only this time, in preparation for becoming a better deer hunter, Mike picks Jay and Dusty's brains for information. Ep 134134 TAYLOR DRURY: The Deer Hunting Family Business & The Story of the "Dirty Little Secret" Buck
When you have the likes of Mark and Terry Drury just a text or holler away for advice on deer hunting, your chances of killing big bucks year after year goes up, way up. Taylor Drury has learned an incredible amount from her father and uncle over the years, and although she is only 20, she probably has the whitetail knowledge of someone three times her age. The one thing that Taylor notes as the most important key to being a great hunter, Persistence (notice the capital "P"). Taylor says that there really aren't any short cuts to hunting, although it may seem that way on television. She notes: television only shows you the best footage for television, but most of the hard work footage and in-between stuff ends up on the editing room floor. Ep 123123 JEANNE MCFALL - HUNTING THE IDAHO MOUNTAINS - Extreme Huntress
Many hunters from the east might consider hunting the west and the Idaho mountains as hunting the big country, the big woods. Jeanne McFall considers it a back yard and a play ground. Despite the rigors of hunting this mountainous terrain, Jeanne just sees it as part of the hunt. In fact, she's been playing in this sandbox since she was a child and prefers to hunt solo. Now Jeanne fines her outdoor skills so sharp that she is now a finalist in the Extreme Huntress competition. We discuss Idaho, work, spoting and hunting elk, and hunting big muleys. And much more!
