Ep 267267 The Electric Hunting Mountain Bike - QuietKat - Adam Parr - Hunt Tech Part VII
It's hard to imagine that a bicycle would have anything to do with deer hunting. For years we've relied on our vehicles- our trucks and our ATVs and our UTVs to get us deeper into the woods to our hunting spots. But a bicycle? Well, turns out, with a little ingenuity from some outdoor enthusiasts and a re-design of the legendary mountain bike - fatter tires, better suspension, a motor, and a hardcore battery like what you'd find in the futuristic Tesla automobile, the all terrain electric bike was born. We discuss in detail with QuietKat's Adam Parr how they engineered what is perhaps the most innovated electric all terrain bicycle on the market and how it will likely change the future of how hunters go quietly to and from their favorite hunting spots with the efficiency of the ATV. Ep 266266 The Cellular Game Camera - Covert Scouting Cameras - Kimber O'Dell - Hunt Tech Part VI
We continue our podcast mini-series of hunting technology on this episode with the cellular game camera. Long gone are the days of film game cameras. The standard game camera now is digital with an SD card. But now the cellular game camera is making strides in both quality and price point. Will this be the new standard soon? Time will tell as everyone starts to accept and use the latest technology. We thought we should explore the cellular game camera because everyone seems to want one but many don't know enough about them to jump in. So we grabbed our good friend Kimber O'Dell from Covert Scouting Cameras to break it all down for us. Ep 265265 The Arrow and the Broadhead - David Hand - Slash Arrows - Hunt Tech Part V
Over the past 4 episodes of our Hunt Tech mini-series we've explored a deer movement prediction app with the Drury's and their new app called Deercast, the on-demand action camera with Aaron Stonehocker from Tactacam, a game camera picture data processing system with Jon Livingston from DeerLab, and mapping and waypoint technology with Zach Sandau from OnX Hunt. Now, we move onto the arrow and the broadhead with David Hand from Slash Arrows. The earliest evidence of the arrow launched from a bow dates back some 10,000 years and we've seen some amazing arrow and the broadhead advancements in technology since the aluminium arrow was first introduced. Every year there seems to be a new innovative arrow and broadhead design and David Hand may have one of the most innovative designs in recent years. We asked David to join us to explore all the innovations over the last 20 years, where things are today, and what the future of the arrow and the broadhead looks like for archery hunters. Ep 264264 Digital Hunt Maps - OnX Hunt - Zach Sandau - Hunt Tech Part IV
Remember when maps were on paper? We use to spend money on paper topo maps and put a thumbtack on that map to represent a deer sighting, effectively creating heat map with multiple thumbtacks. Then along came Google and Google Maps. It was a revolutionary step forward in scouting technology, but there were some very important pieces missing from the Google map. For one, we couldn't instantly in-the field in real-time tell where the boundary lines of property existed. Sure, we could spend hours looking at town survey maps, but nothing was instant. And who the heck owned the property? That was another game of tracking down slow information points. These were all the challenges that Eric Siegfried, founder of OnX Maps had at one time. All of the information was available, but not instantly on any single device in an organized manner when you needed it. So, Eric set out to fix all that with his new company. A decade later, with a subscription and smart phone or GPS you can instantly have access to all this information. It's a game changer for the hunter. You'll learn more about the areas that you hunt than you ever thought to ask and it makes the hunting possibilities endless. We dive deep into all the bells, whistles, and capabilities that OnX has to offer with Zach Sandau, Project Co-Ordinator for OnX Hunt. This is part IV of our series on hunting technology and stay tune for out next episode when we explore arrow and broad head technology with David Hand CEO of Ballistic Arrow Tech and Slash Arrows. Ep 263263 Game Camera Picture Data - Deer Lab - JON LIVINGSTON - Hunt Tech Part III
By now in your hunting career you've probably used a game camera or two. As hunters we use game cameras to scout and gather information about deer movement. Game camera pics can be deceiving though, for multiple reasons. For example, there could be a huntable buck in the area that just won't come to the camera. Or, perhaps we get a picture of a buck, but the reason we think he's in the area might be relative to something completely different from what we thought. Scientifically these examples could be considered a false negatives and a false positives. Using a multiple camera system and gathering data points connected to weather might be a better approach to determining when to hunt. However, keeping track of data when using more than a couple cameras can be daunting and without keeping statistics correctly the degree of error goes up when determining the true pattern. That's where Deer Lab comes into play. Deer Lab takes game camera picture information thru photo recognition and time stamps and marries that content with external weather data to help you determine statistically the best time to hunt a target. In other words, Deer Lab can efficiently determine what's in the picture and then couples the time stamp to weather points like wind speed, sunrise, sunset, barometric pressure, visibility, humidity, and moon data. In this episode of Hunt Tech Part III, we dive deep with Jon Livingston of Deer Lab to figure out how Deer Lab can help you uncover all the data and information that a game cam picture holds, well beyond just an image of your target buck. Ep 262262 The Hunting Action Camera -Tactacam - Aaron Stonehocker - Hunt Tech Part II
On the last episode of Deer Hunt, we began our exploration of hunting technology with the Drury's new app called DeerCast. We continue our series on hunting technology this time with the likes of Tactacam, a company who built what is perhaps the best deer hunting action camera on the market. We've all been involved with hunts where we wished we had a camera to film it all but didn't. And there's that occasion when we did have a camera, but the awkwardness of using the camera and taking the shot at the same time made for terrible footage. There have been other action cameras on the market, but somehow, this small coming out of Minnesota has gotten top marks with hunters, probably because they thought through what the hunter needs most- a camera that can seemingly just be part of the equipment - conveniently hidden near the end of a barrel or within the stabilizer of a bow, and without duct tape, and can be activated with a push of the button. Tactacam continues to reach new ground as it constantly attempts to increase the quality of the video with the likes of Tactacam 5.0, but has never compromised for those hunters on a budget for example with the Tactacam Solo. Stay with us as we explore all the aspects of Tactacam on this show with the like of Aaron Stonehocker. Ep 261261 Deer Movement Prediction - DeerCast - Drury Outdoors - Hunt Tech Part I
In the first part of our 6 Part Series of Hunt Tech, where we explore the technology that has embedded itself in our hunting lives, we dive deep into a new hunting app called DeerCast by Drury Outdoors. For a very long time deer hunters have been trying to determine when deer move, what conditions make for a worthy deer hunt, and when should we as deer hunters capitalize on those factors. We've spent hours and hours studying solunar charts, weather maps for pressure and cold fronts, and peak estrus diagrams for the areas that we hunt. It can be a daunting task to put that all together. The Drurys- Mark, Terry, Matt, and Taylor have condensed all this information into one app for iOS and Android call Deercast to determine the best times to hunt in your area during each phase of the Drury 13 Phases of hunting. Will it be effective? Only time will tell, but undoubtedly technology in the deer hunting world, like it or not, is here to stay. So we thought we should explore in detail some of these tech advancements. Stay tuned for our next episode where we explore action cameras with the likes of Tactacam. In 1977 Chris Cordell began a career as a professional deer hunter. He is the first and only hunter in the world to complete a double slam in one season and has tagged in over 200 whitetails, not to mention placing over 30 Pope and Young whitetails on his wall. Oh, and that was before the age of 35. Chris is also an outdoor writer, product designer, and inventor of various archery products for the hunting industry. Away from the spotlight for a while, Chris is poised for a comeback and wants nothing more than to help hunters hunt better. His favorite quote: Let 'em grow. We like that. Today, 160 pounds lighter, weighing in at a lean 200 pounds, Dennis has found a rejuvenation for everything he loves, life and deer hunting. Dennis attributes his successful weight loss to a popular diet called the ketogenic diet. A passionate deer hunting and outdoor television cameraman, Dennis now out paces his fellow hunters and looks at climbing trees these days as entertaining instead of a burden. Dennis walks us through how he dropped the 160 pounds in a relatively short amount of time and how the weight loss has drastically help his career and his ability to hunt. Ep 256256 Justin Coots & Jacob Bennett - BOSTON BOWHUNTER
As Longfellow wrote in his infamous poem Paul Revere's Ride, "One if by land, two if by sea" describing the Redcoat's travel plans from Boston to Concord, we can almost re-envision this today as a description of hunting and fishing in the modern world- one whitetail land, two stripers by sea. Now it's the hunt, and perhaps a new fight for freedom, that is conducted in the suburbs of Boston where the American Revolution began. According to Justin Coots and Jacob Bennett, members of a fairly new band of bowhunting patriots call Boston Bowhunter, it's darn good hunting in and around Boston. We discuss how Justin, a fairly new hunter and Jacob, a seasoned deer hunter, plan there hunts in and around the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts and why they founded the Boston Bowhunter group. Ep 255255 MICHAEL YATES - Tennessee Ground Hunting Tactics and Hunter Efficiency
We've heard the expression 'Hunt the Wind' over and over. Many of us base our entire hunt on exactly that concept. But what if that was all wrong? Did your head just explode? Mine did when I heard this from Michael Yates, part of the group of hunters that Bill Vale has organized as the Pressured Deer Pros. I had to dig deeper so we put Michael on the mic stand to discuss amongst other things: hunter efficiency, ground disturbance, hunting upwind and not down wind, several ground hunting tactics and ambush set ups. Ep 254254 Wounded Deer Tracking Dogs: The Blood Trailers - Diane Richardson, Joanne Greer, Mike Lafleur
Sometimes those kills shots don't go as planned or sometimes, despite a double lung shot, the deer finds it's way into terrain or structure that make the wounded deer track undetectable to the hunter. A trained deer tracking dog can be an immeasurable asset to a hunter in situations just like this and it's the right thing to do out of respect for the animal. But how does it work? What should we expect when we call in the dogs? We invited a panel of volunteer leashed dog deer trackers into the studio to discuss many of the issues surrounding tracking a wounded deer with a trained dog. Dedication: This show is dedicated to our good friend Fender. He was the best deer and turkey camp dog we've ever known. Rest in peace my friend. We'll miss you buddy. Ep 253253 JOHN STALLONE - Hunter Recruitment & How to Bow Hunt the Coyote
Hunter recruitment is critical for our sport to survive. QDMA says that declining hunter participation is one of the single most important issues impacting deer hunting and management today. But what's to blame? Is it social media? Is it a lack of hunter unity? Is it the media or the anti-hunter winning over the middle ground? These are tough questions to answer, but it'll be essential for us to answer to reverse the trend of declining hunter numbers. We turned to John Stallone to discuss this topic in-depth as he just wrote a think piece article about the subject. But we don't stop there. I've always been fascinated with John's ability to successfully take coyote with a bow an arrow. Ep 252252 Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo - Archer's Choice
If you've ever watched hunting television, you're probably familiar with Ralph and Vicki Cianciarulo and their show Archer's Choice. This year in August Ralph and Vicki's will air their 400th episode on the Outdoor Channel. From Ralph's archery shop that he ran in the 1980s grew the television show and together they were the first couple to produce an outdoor television. They've hunted 5 continents, 11 countries, 10 Canadian provinces, 27 states, and have take over 50 species of game. They travel frequently and hunt frequently and we figured they learned a thing or two about hunting strategies over the years, so we asked them to share. And they agreed without hesitation. Ep 251251 KIP ADAMS - The Whitetail Report Part II: Deer Issues and Trends
We pick up where we left off last week with a further discussion of the QDMA's 2018 Whitetail Report with Director of Conservation Kip Adams. This time we discuss current deer related issues and trends like the legality of crossbow use, cellular trail cameras, drones, CWD prevalence, testing and cost, top hunter land management practices, hunter numbers, deer tag requirements, venison donation programs, state deer management plans, and lawsuits. Ep 250250 KIP ADAMS - The Whitetail Report: 2018 Harvest Trends
White-tailed deer are arguably the most important game species in North America. Kip Adams, Wildlife Biologist and the Director of Conservation for the Quality Deer Management Association, would agree with this concept. More hunters pursue whitetail than any other species and whitetail hunters contribute more financially than and other hunter segment. But how to the numbers stack up state to state? Who's killing the most deer? Which state kills the most does? Which state kills more bucks per square mile? Which state has the highest percentage of yearling buck kills? Which has the least? We had lots of these types of questions, and it just so happens that QDMA puts out such a booklet about this each year. So we asked Kip to break it all down for us. Ep 249249 RICHARD BERNIER - Tracking and Stalking Big Maine Whitetail Bucks
Richard Bernier is one of those short list legendary deer trackers of the Northeast. He has devoted most of his life to tracking, studying, lecturing on, and hunting big Maine whitetail buck. The Northeast editor for Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine, Richard's articles and photographs have appeared in nearly every major outdoor publication in America. Otherwise known as R.G. or Dick, Richard has perfected the craft of outsmarting Maine's crafty big wilderness hog-bodied bucks, both with gun and camera. Ep 248248 PAUL KURTZ - Coffee & Deer Camp - A Hunter's Perfect Blend
There's always something special about a cup of coffee at deer camp. It can even be a crappy cup of coffee, but it still taste pretty darn good. But what if the coffee actually was good? And what if you knew that the coffee itself was created by a group of folk that support hunting, gun rights, and we're hunters just like you. The aroma and taste of that cup would be better than an cup of joe that you've ever had before. Paul Kurtz understands the complexities of this phenomenon and that's exactly what he created Hunter's Blend Coffee. Ep 247247 BIG AL MORRIS - Coyote Management Is Essential for Your Deer Herd
A coyote is going to eat what it needs to eat. It's kill when it needs to kill. An taking one coyote out of the pack, will save deer fawns. Al Morris says that coyote management is an essential tool for maintaining the health of your deer herd in your area. It's been over 2 years since we talked to Al Morris, and we thought a refresher crash course on coyote hunting was overdue. We dive deep into technique relative to the time of year you're hunting coyote and how to use a buddy system set up. Al also shares some results of some studies, his latest call sequence and when to use it effectively. Ep 246246 JOSHUA FRANKS - Tactical Cyber Scouting and Mature Buck Bedding Temperature
We continue our talks with the Pressured Deer Pros and Bill Vale's Circle of Masters. This time we explore tactical cyber scouting and mature buck bedding temperatures with Joshua Franks. Josh uses readily available internet satellite images to study land, terrain, cover, and topography. He also uses this information to determine bedding areas, food plot and stand locations. Josh heavily focuses his studies in mature buck bedding temperature and has recently co-authored a book about the subject with Bill Vale. Ep 245245 DOUG LAIRD - The World's #1 Antlered Doe
Yes, we know this is the Big Buck Registry. But when a 199" composite antlered doe becomes the only Boone & Crockett doe on record, it's worthy. Despite this show airing originally on April 1st, this is not a joke, despite the obvious appearance. During the 2014 Missouri gun season, Doug Laird came within range of what he thought was the biggest buck on his property. Little did he know that his deer would become the only doe entry EVER into the Boone and Crockett record books. Ep 244244 LT. DAVID GREGORY - Enforcing Operation Game Thief - To Catch a Poacher
As hunters, we don't consider poachers to be hunters. Sure the activities may look similar to the non-hunter, but there are vast differences in the approach of taking game. The obvious difference, is that a hunter does the hunt legally, the poacher illegally. But how do law abiding hunters keep the ill intent from messing up our clean image? You probably can't completely fix that problem, but the Enforcement Division can sure separate the good from the bad. Lt David Gregory of the Vermont State Fish and Game is all too familiar with poachers, but he says that they don't in anyway represent the vast majority of hunters. David shares some of his epic arrests on this episode and we talk in detail about a family of poachers with a rap sheet dating back to the 1990s that got pinched once again in 2017. The activity seems to be taught, not instinctive. Ep 243243 BILL VALE - GREG SKUFCA - Pressured Deer Pros, Circle of Masters
Bill Vale first joined us on Episode 216 and soon thereafter we were inundated with questions and requests to have Bill join us a second time. Well, Bill is back. Bill has recently launched a new project called Pressured Deer Pros where he has sought out and hand picked a group experts in different areas of hunting and then brought them to all together in one virtual location. Bill refers to these experts as his Circle of Masters. Bill's circle of masters show mastery skills from a minerals, to mapping, to a habitat, to fitness, and so on. We plan to visit with each of Bill's Masters, and first we visit with Greg Skufca, Bill's habitat expert out from Michigan. Ep 242242 JONI MARIE - Bucket Lists and Heavy Arrows
So let's say that one day you were told that you only had 2 years left to live. What would you're plan be? Amongst your other desires, my guess is that you would put together a plan to fulfill many of the hunts you've always wanted to do. The proverbial "bucket list" would quickly swing into full affect. Turns out, this is exactly what happen to Joni Marie, a native Alaskan who enjoys the all fertile terrain that Alaska has to offer as much as anyone. So away Joni went on her bucket list hunts, only to find out later after more evaluation and testing, that her life expectancy was longer than two years due to medical advancements for her particular form of a rare auto-immune disease. Today, Joni is still fighting a daily battle against the elements, as her condition can often turn her hands paper white when exposed to cold temperatures. But make no mistake; Joni is far from wrapping up her hunting lifestyle. Ep 241241SEAN ASADA - Buying the American Deer Hunter's Dream on a Shoestring Budget
If the American Dream is to own your own house, then the American Hunter's dream is to own your own piece of hunting real estate. But to achieve that dream we are often faced with the burden of financing, credit, and income especially if we're working the 9 to 5 job and living paycheck to paycheck. According to Sean Asada, despite these perceived challenges, Sean says that you can do it, he did it, and he didn't have 2 nickles to rub together. He started with a 10 acre piece, then another 13 acres, sold those, then bought 80 acres, sold that land, then bought 280 acres all for himself to hunt. Sean explains how he devised his plan to own his own hunting land without breaking his blue collar shoestring budget. Ep 240240 RODNEY ELMER - Knowing When to Hunt and When to Follow
For some reason central Vermont is home to arguably some of the best deer trackers in country, especially when you throw the Benoit Family into the mix. Rodney Elmer is not exception to this. I met up with Rodney at a hunting and fishing expo recently and in conversation quickly realized that Rodney was as much into the outdoor way of life as I am. Rodney is well spoken and can speak intelligently on the hunter's hot topics of today. But it doesn't end there. Rodney is a steward of the woods, has top notch navigation skills as you might expect, is a professional taxidermist of 32 years, and is the chief hunter's safety instructor and safety officer in Vermont. Rodney has his finger on the pulse of the hunting community and shares his views through his popular and rising YouTube channel. Ep 238238 RICK BEBOUT - The Morgantown Urban Archers - A Blueprint for City Deer Hunting
When deer populations somewhere in Urban Town USA get out of control to the point where citizens complain about vegetation and landscape damage and an over abundance of deer-vehicles collisions, as a city government, what do you do? You could call a company like White Buffalo and have professional sharp shooters cull the herd, or perhaps go the steralization route like we witness on Staten Island. Orrrr, you could just do what bowhunters do best, hunt the deer with bow armed volunteer citizens in a organized, controlled, discreet manner. That's exactly what the Rick Bebout and a group of 80 bowhunters did in Morgantown West Virginia. Backed by the support of the city, the Morgantown Urban Archers were formed. It brought meat to those in need, it effectively knocked down the deer numbers, and gained the trust and support of the residents of Morgantown, all on a extremely low budget, all based on the concept of letting skilled bowhunters do what they want to do naturally anyway. Makes sense to me. Ep 237237 WAYNE and SHAUNA BOGARDUS - Killing the Fall & Suspension Trauma - Treestand Wingman
Treestand safety is a hot topic. And it should be. Studies show that treestand accidents are by far the leader in serious injury or death to a hunter. There have been some major advancements in safety though the years compared to the days when the hunter would limb climb a tree into a wooden built treestands. The harness has also come a long way since the early days, the attachment straps aren't as limiting, devices like the Life Line now keep us attached to the tree, but suspension trauma, should you slip, is still a major concern. Wayne Borgardus has invented a device that is a game changer and address all these issues. The device is lightweight, attaches easily to the tree or to a Life Line, supports a hunter of the larger or smaller variety, works with any harness, can be used over and over, is affordable, and will slowly and safely drop you to the ground should fall. Ep 236236 BLAKE DAVIS - Exploring Xpedition: An Archery Study
The archery industry is certainly flooded with bow manufacturers. There's not much to dispute there. So if you are going to get in, you better be darn good. Scratch that, you better be great. So where do you begin? Enter stage left, Xpedition Archery. Grown from their mother ship in the aerospace industry, and after making parts for other well known bow manufacturers, Xpedition Archery started building bows with the same engineering, quality, and demands that the aircraft industry puts on aircraft manufacturers. We sat down with Blake Davis, the national sales manager for Xpedition Archery to see what's under the hood. Ep 235235 The 2018 New England Deer Summit - Dean Vanier, Rodney Elmer, Jim Gallagher, Todd Mead, Neil Pendleton, Bobby Sholan
When asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at a Deer Summit, you say "heck yes"! Fred Allard, Director of the Rockingham Fishing and Hunting Expo, threw out the idea. On a cold January 2018 day in New Hampshire our own Jay Scott gathered along with Neil Pendleton, Todd Mead, Bobby Sholan, Rodney Elmer, Jim Gallagher, and Dean Vanier to discuss many concepts surrounding deer and deer hunting. Amongst the concepts and questions for the panelists were: How do you use scent as a deer lure? How do you hunt early-mid-late deer season? How do you start a mock scrape? What's a shooter buck to you? Why is it important to bring young hunters into hunting and how do we do it? What's your favorite and memorable deer hunt? Do you use scent control and if so, how do you use it? In one sentence, what advice would you give to other hunters? OUR SPONSORS: The Treestand Wingman, Covert Scouting Cameras, Horny Buck Seed Company, The Enforcer, Morse's Sporting Goods, Strut Zone NWT Northwoods Common Scents, BIG BUCK MERCH DEER NEWS: Online outrage after Canadian TV host kills cougar in northern Alberta Japanese train barks like a dog to prevent accidents Mississippi woman bags deer ahead of her 100th birthday HERE ARE THE PANELISTS Neil Pendleton Neil, a resident of New Hampshire, has 24 years of hunting experience and has hunted in four different states, including New Hampshire, Ohio, Massachusetts, and his home state of Maine. Neil believes persistence and passion are the key factors that contribute to his success. Neil currently has five collective entries in the New Hampshire and Maine Trophy/Big Buck Clubs. Of the five entries, three were with a bow, one with a rifle, and most recently, in 2017, with a muzzleloader. In 2015, Neil arrowed the buck of a lifetime – a buck he hunted for 1,490 days, spanning 5 seasons. Neil was a featured guest on Episode 175 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunt Podcast. Todd Mead Todd was introduced into hunting in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. After years of hunting success in the big mountains, he decided to venture to public lands across the country to see if he could locate and take big bucks in different areas across many states. He hunts primarily with archery equipment outside of his home state, but uses a rifle while in the Adirondacks. Todd was a featured guest on Episode 130 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunt Podcast. Todd is also an outdoor writer and author of 3 books about whitetail deer hunting. Bobby Sholan Bobby was born and raised in the woods of northern Vermont. He has successfully hunted whitetail deer for 23 years now, while bow hunting for whitetail for 20 of those years. He has hunting experience in several states including VT, NH , ME , MA , PA , Ohio and Ontario. Bobby uses trail cameras to target the biggest deer in an area and uses other tools including maps and year round scouting. Bobby adapts to the seasons and changing weather and although has killed more deer with archery, he is able to track in snow and setup on pitch points to ambush an unsuspecting bucks. Rodney Elmer Rodney is a professional taxidermist of 32 years and owner of Mountain Deer Taxidermy. In addition to being a life long deer hunter, he is a chief hunter's safety instructor and range officer in his home state of Vermont. As an outdoor educator of many years his straight- forward, make-it-work hunting style has earned him many big New England bucks. His rising YouTube channel focuses on common sense, family hunting experiences, love of the natural world and outdoor education mixed with humor. Jim Gallagher Jim lives in Methuen, MA. He shot his first deer with a bow in Vermont when he was 14. Jim's father, unable to walk due to complications with MS, would drive Jim to Vermont every weekend, and wait in the car while Jim hunted. For the passion and love of the sport Jim taught himself how to hunt efficiently and successfully, and to date has harvested 191 deer with a bow. Jim has spent a lifetime testing, developing and creating an educational bow hunting DVD of his favorite secrets and techniques to help bring others many years of success in hunting whitetails. Dean Vanier Dean has over 40 years of experience hunting the New England woods and 25 years in the Deer Hunting Industry. Dean endlessly shares his wealth of knowledge and sure-fire hunting techniques in his seminars including how to use deer scent lures to defeat a whitetail's defense mechanisms, how deer responded to the 3 phases of the rut, how to anticipate where deer will be during these phases, and how bring deer to you. Dean hunts using deer calls, mock scrapes, and deer lures, specifically with his own brand of deer scents called Northwoods Common Scents. Dean insists that the future of hunting depends greatly on youth of today and it is our responsibility to pass on this great tradition. Ep 234234 HENRY MONCRIEF - Reading Hunting Pressure, Smell Like Nothing
Hunting in multiple semi-local states can be a huge advantage to a deer hunter, especially if some states hold longer seasons. Henry Moncrief uses this to his advantage as he hunts Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. These states, despite their reputation for holding smaller racked bucks compared to the midwest for example, lower deer densities, and difficult hunting terrain, Henry seems to have found a formula for hunting and killing the bigger, if not the biggest bucks in these woods no matter which state he hunts. Henry changes his strategies based on the weather patterns that he northeast can deliver, loves to read hunting pressure, and says that scent control to the point of smelling like nothing is a key to his success. Ep 233233 ULRIK ORSKOV - Danes, Bull Tahr, and Dirty Steak
Hunting outside of the United States summons the need for a new set of hunting styles and strategies, much like we see when looking at east vs west hunting within the U.S. Ulrik Orskov is as passionate a big game hunter within his home country of Denmark and most of us are for whitetail or muleys. At home Ulrik hunts the familiar European deer like fallow, roe, and red but often ventures to the rugged mountains of New Zealand in search of the Bull Tahr and Sambar. We breakdown Ulrik strategies and styles of bow hunting in each country and learn why a walking stick while hunting the mountains of New Zealand is worth it's weight in gold. We tend to listen intently to our guests on this show , but rarely dive deep into who we are as the crew of the Big Buck Registry, so we decided to mix it up a bit. Ep 230230 ROBBIE KROGER - Why We Are Hunters, Blood Origins
Why do we hunt? Why are we hunters? What makes us tick? For many reasons, these are questions that we should probably ask ourselves as hunters. These are also the questions that Robbie Kroger has set out to answer as part of his Blood Origins project. Through interviews with hunters and his own experiences, Robbie has discovered that we all have a connection in our roots to hunting, passed along from generation to generation, and that often times the connection to hunting is deeper than that. This is what we might consider our hunting heritage. And if you are familiar with this concept, you know what it is. It has a smell, a feel, you breathe it in and it feels amazing. It is the freedom that hunting provides. And it is freedom that allows hunting to exist. This may seem a bit cerebral at the moment, but I suspect that you'll understand it better as we discuss Blood Origins with Robbie. Chancy Walters is a fisherman, a hunter, a wildlife artist, an entrepreneur, a cook, a traveler and a self proclaimed adrenaline junkie and storm chaser. There's probably no shock to learn that Chancy is part of the Whitetail Adrenaline crew - the deer hunting film company lead be Jared Scheffler whose claim to fame is all public land hunting with no commercials, ads, or sponsors. Chancy prefers a no scouting, run and gun, snooking for whitetails style of hunting. He says it leads to a stress free lifestyle. Ep 227227 DON HIGGINS - 7 Days - 400 Inches, A Buck Named Smokey, A Buck Named Trump
On a frosty November morning in 1979 a 9-point whitetail buck walked into Don Higgin's set. Don squeezed the trigger on his grandfathers Remington 12-gauge, the slug found it's mark. A decade later Don acquired his grandparents small farm and he wasted no time transforming it into a whitetail paradise. After honing his craft, Don became a conservation contractor and transformed lots of the Midwest into whitetail habitat for the US Government and private individuals. Don has written for numerous outdoor publications, wrote a book in 2005 called Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World, and now speaks to deer hunters at a variety of deer hunting seminars. And, one week in October 2017, Don shot two bucks of a lifetime totaling over 400 inches of antler. What you don't realize is that it took over 10 Years collectively of waiting, watching, and planning to make that happen. Don shares with us how he did it. Ep 226226 MATT ROSS - QDMA, Select Tree Cutting for Deer Habitat, Balancing the Herd
We wanted to know more about select tree cutting for deer habitat so we turned to our friend from the Quality Deer Management Association, Matt Ross. The conversation became much more than a tree cutting exercise, as we explored the history of the QDMA, deer herd balance, proper doe to buck ratios, quantitative herd analysis, deer plants and overall deer habitat. Matt Ross is certified wildlife biologist and licensed forester. He received his bachelor's in wildlife conservation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and his master's in wildlife management from the University of New Hampshire. Before joining the QDMA staff, Matt worked for a natural resource consulting firm in southern New Hampshire, and he was a QDMA volunteer and Branch officer and is now QDMA's Assistant Director of Conservation. Ep 225225 CUZ STRICKLAND - Mossy Oak and the Adrenaline Shakes
When I first received an email from Ronnie Strickland, I wasn't sure, but I thought, could this be Ronnie Cuz Strickland sending in fan mail to our podcast? Turns out it was Cuz. Cuz has been around the outdoor industry scene for quite some time now. You may remember the television show Mossy Oak's Hunting the Country back in the 90s. I was a much a fan of that show back then as Cuz is a fan of this podcast today. Cuz was one of the first employees of Mossy Oak when he joined the team back in 1987 and worked with Toxey Haas to develop the Media Production Department. Ep 224224 DANIELLE HALVERSON - Asking to Hunt, Guiding for Muleys, A Young Hunter's Perspective
Danielle Halverson is 20 years old. A petite frame, you would be hard pressed if you passed her on the street to think the words 'stone cold killer'. But make no mistake, despite her age, looks, and demeanor, Danielle is a lethal bowhunter. It's interesting to interview today's younger generation and come across someone like Danielle who says she never stops thinking about deer hunting, guides for mule deer, and has a couple of 170" class deer under her belt. Ep 223223 DAVE PAULIDES - Missing Hunters 411, The Stranger Things
You are about to listen to a series of stories where the victims never thought they'd be lost. The vast majority of these stories have never been documented before at this level. Dave Paulides, author of the book Missing 411 - Hunters - Unexplained Disappearances, part of a series backed by the CanAm Project, decided to delve deeper and investigate a subset of missing persons, specifically those who disappeared in National Parks and Forests. Dave identified a deeper subset of missing person that hit home with us, specifically hunters with skill sets whom you could never imagine deemed missing, much less lost, all of which were never found. Dave explains how he first came across this unusual subset of missing victims, shares with us five of the many stories in his book, and attempts to put some perspective on what each of these cases have in common. Ep 221221 SHAWN SMITH - A Discussion of High Fence, Low Fence, Deer Breeding, & Genetics
Seems like one of the most controversial topics amongst hunters these days is high fence hunting. So, we decided to take another deeper look into the subject, only this time with Shawn Smith from Texas. Shawn, along with his father Rowan, runs a high fence-low fence ranch, a deer breeding and genetics facility, and a deer fence manufacturing company. There are many permits involved in running a high fence ranch, state granted benefits, state agency involvement, and there are quite a few things that we can learn from deer in a high fence/low fence managed hunting areas that we can take to the field on even public grounds. Ep 220220 JOHN LOUK - The TMA, More Than a Sticker - Tree Stand Safety
If you've shopped for a tree stand between 1996 and now, you may have noticed a sticker on the box or on the tree stand with the three initials, TMA - the Treestand Manufacturer's Association. This sticker seems to be attached to everything we buy relative to climbing a tree these days, but what the heck does in mean? Climbing a tree prior to 1996 really was all that saf and certainly there was no accountability regarding tree stand industry standards. In a room, in a voluntary meeting at a trade show in Atlanta, Georgia in 1995, a group of treestand manufacturers gathered to build a new set of standards specific to a niche group of products that only a niche group of people understand, called treestands. It wasn't as smooth as you might think, but it certainly changed the industry forever, made it safer, and ultimately more enjoyable and effective for the hunter. That TMA sticker, it means a heck of a lot more than meets the eye. Ep 219219 BLAKE ALMA - One Hunter's Beginning, The Art of the Outdoorsman
Blake Alma has written for numerous outdoor publications, written 4 books, and hosts his own outdoor radio show. All because someone handed him a fishing pole when he was 13 years old. He fell for the outdoor way of life. Here's the kicker. Blake is only 16 years old. In just 3 years Blake has accomplished more than many accomplish in a lifetime. Blake is driven, isn't consumed by video games, and has a direction that we rarely see in a 16 year old these days. Ep 218218 BEN RISING - Barometers, Cold Fronts, October 23rd, and Rule #1
Ben's reputation in the whitetail world is no secret. With the many Boone and Crockett bucks to his credit, it's easy to see why hunters want to know more. Ben's dad started trapping and hunting with Ben when he was just a toddler. He credits his woodsmanship, deer and habitat knowledge to his father and the older generations of people who spent time with him outdoors. Ben has been in the forest industry since the age of sixteen and started his own logging business at the age of twenty. Ben now works as a forester/timber buyer for a local sawmill and as an outfitter for Wicked Ridge Outfitters. Ep 217217 NICK HOFFMAN - The Farm, The Fiddle, Deer Hunting, and a Wild Ride
When you get your own Wikipedia page, you know you've done something notable. Turns out Nick Hoffman has a page on the interweb based encyclopedia, and he should. Nick made a career playing fiddle next to the likes of Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Trace Adkins, Sara Evans, and Brooks & Dunn. But the fun doesn't stop there. Nick has a show on the Outdoor Channel called Nick's Wild Ride where he hunts different parts of the world, but explores and documents unique aspects of the local culture while on location. We suspected that Nick learned a thing or two while hunting different species so we asked him. He said the big this is to play the wind, sit down, and shut up (an old Fred Bear saying).
