The ring allows me to track all sorts of crazy things about my sleep, including my resting heart rate, my deep sleep stages, my REM sleep, etc, etc. I really enjoy the feedback and allows me to make lifestyle decisions to become a higher performer. Let me give you an example. So prior to getting the ordering, I would fast essentially 16 hours after my last meal. It didn’t matter when that last meal was. However, when I look at my resting heart rate, and how that really correlates to my performance The next day, I know I want my lowest resting heart rate coming as soon as possible after going to sleep because that’s when all my recovery really starts. So what did I do? Well, it allowed me to adjust really when my last meal was before going to bed. So I have my last meal. Now, earlier in the night, I get better sleep, I get higher quality sleep. And I must say the next day feels amazing. So if you want to check out the Oura Ring and if you want to pick one up yourself, go to ouraring.com and plug in the code Boomer and you’ll get $50 off your order or 50 euros, depending on your jurisdiction. Ep 57Super Learning and Keeping Up in the Age of Innovation with Justin Noppé
Justin Noppé once memorized a chapter in Moby Dick and Pi to 100 digits. The techniques Justin employed go far beyond the memory palace. He developed systems which are useful in tackling the feats of memory and applicable to learning any subject, including language. “Most people just want to have a conversation that's comfortable. How much time do you need to put in for that? I would say, yes, 30 minutes a day. Five, maybe six times a week for about six months. You'll get to a point, if you use the correct methodology if you're learning the correct stuff, the correct material in six months you will become very comfortable with that language.” Justin Noppé Who is Justin Noppé? Like you, language and performance expert, Justin Noppé, went through the regular school pipeline, coming out the other end asking if this was really beneficial? How much information from those 12 years is still accessible? Do I know how to study? Teaching languages for 15 years, his approach is radically different. Unlike many teachers and language programs, he shows how to become automatic with a language and use your brains natural methods. Working in harmony with what is, rather than working against it. Asking the question, "How can I get better results with less time?" Justin is able to help his clients connect with other cultures and achieve surprising results. Justin's method is a fusion of language and brain training that connects his clients to their previously unrealized potential. Companies and individuals all along the spectrum, from style consultants to internet exchange companies, have come to him for fast, long term results not only in languages, but also with other aspects of language and brain performance such as presentation coaching, accent reduction and meta-cognitive skills training (like memory techniques, speed reading and mental model workshops). Justin continues to work with cross-cultural professionals online or in group workshops. Ep 53The Advanced Sleep Class with Dr. Benjamin Smarr
Dr. Benjamin Smarr returns for a deeper dive into sleep physiology, wearable technology, social jet lag, and the missed opportunities in health innovation. “If people have been doing rotating shift work, the longer that they've not been doing it, the more all these bad effects tend to go away...which is amazing and wonderful. That's for adults. That's not for developing kids. But even so, I think saying I'm pregnant so I can never fly is probably overblown. I think it's more an issue of the chronic daily insults where you just don't get time to recover.” Dr. Benjamin Smarr Who is Dr. Benjamin Smarr? Dr. Benjamin Smarr studies the temporal structures that biological systems make as they move through time. An NIH research fellow at UC Berkeley, his work focuses on understanding how physiological dynamics like sleep, circadian rhythms, and ovulatory cycles are shaped by the brain, and how disturbances to those cycles gives rise to disease. Ep 52Frontier Epigenetics with Dr. Tom Stubbs
Dr. Tom Stubbs joins the Decoding Superhuman podcast to speak about methylation testing, biological age, and how to use epigenetics for high performance. Epigenetics is the only measure of biological age that, independent of the tissue or the sample that you take... whether it be saliva, a liver sample, a urine sample, a blood sample, you get age prediction. Now, if you take telomere length, for instance, you only actually get a weak positive correlation with age in blood. Dr. Tom Stubbs Who is Dr. Tom Stubbs? Tom obtained a First-Class Honours degree in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from Magdalen College, Oxford. Tom subsequently undertook a PhD in epigenetics at the University of Cambridge, which was broadly on the development and implementation of novel wet-lab and computational methods aimed at improving the understanding of epigenetics (specifically DNA methylation). Over the last four years, Tom has been working at the forefront of epigenetic research and has authored a number of high impact scientific publications and patented two models. An epigenetics test enables individuals to predict the effects of environmental and lifestyle factors on their biological age. Tom realized that access to information about a person’s epigenetic clock would be incredibly useful from both personal and public health perspectives. Tom co-founded Chronomics, helping individuals to understand how previously unseen factors might have lasting effects on their health ahead of time. Tom worked alongside Dani and Toby to define the first models, bringing Charles into the team to communicate the science behind Chronomics to the public. The company is unique in its field, providing people with proactive, personalized and consumer-centric health management. Key Highlights of the Frontier Epigenetics Podcast? Ep 49Training Focus with Kasper van der Meulen
Bestselling author Kasper van der Meulen discusses breathwork, scheduling, and different strategies to improve your overall focus in this podcast episode. "Focus is consciously directed attention. So you have attention. You have a finite amount of it. Actually, because attention is like a mental currency. It costs energy to spend it. Now attention that is spent on autopilot cost less energy, right? If you do something completely automatic, because you've done it so many times, it as simple and as basic really just run the neural pathway. You just do what you do. Conscious attention takes a bit more energy, which is why it's a bit harder to acquire." Kasper van der Meulen Who is Kasper van der Meulen? Kasper van der Meulen is an author and lifestyle adventurer. He went from being overweight, burnt out and unhappy, to developing laser focus, optimal fitness, and personal freedom. He put himself through numerous experiments and challenges. He optimized his lifestyle, conquered the cold, ran ultramarathons on his bare feet, tested countless diets, read a ton of scientific literature and explored as many esoteric practices he could find. With over ten thousand hours of experience in teaching science, self-development and biohacking, he decided to demystify and methodize these principles in a fun and bite-sized manner. As a final test of his focus, he wrote his book within 30 days, so that he would have to practice everything he preaches. His book “MindLift - Mental Fitness for the Modern Mind” became an Amazon bestseller. Ep 32The Ketosis Deep Dive with Cristi Vlad
So ketogenesis is the process of creating ketone bodies and mitochondria of liver cells. So that’s where the magic happens primarily. So we are in the mitochondria of liver cells and that’s where ketogenesis occurs… we have three main ketone bodies out of which one is technically not a ketone. So we have Beta hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone. Beta hydroxybutyrate is technically not a ketone. It’s a carboxylic acid. Cristi Vlad Who is Cristi Vlad? Cristi Vlad holds a master’s degree in civil engineering. He’s self-taught in genomics, nutrition and biochemistry, machine learning, bioinformatics, cybersecurity and rational thinking. Cristi is the author of seven books including Ketone Power and Periodic Fasting. Cristi Vlad’s utilizes the scientific method in his approach to experiments to limit logical fallacies and remove cognitive bias. He favors science-based medicine, which is actually different from evidence-based medicine. In research, Cristi looks for good evidence and solid arguments to support an ever-changing world view and opinion. This method leaves him thinking fluid and flexible instead of fixed and self-limiting. What is a Ketone? Now if you go back to the episode with Benjamin Smarr and others, I talk a lot about the importance of sleep and how it is absolutely essential to reach epic levels of performance. Only 3% of you out there can get away with less than 6 hours of sleep. Think about that. But when I went back to hacking my sleep, one of the things that I first went to is how to quantify that and the device I use is the Oura Ring, the new one came out recently and you should all get it because frankly it's shaped more like a ring rather than the original Cracker Jack box one which I enjoy and still wear. But the information it gives me is absolutely essential to becoming a more epic human. I look at things like REM sleep, deep sleep, my sleep stages and the sequence of that. Again, go back to the episode with Dr. Smarr if you want to realize what that all really adds up to. And I look just sort of lifestyle adjustments to make me sleep better. For instance, not eating so late at night, leads to an earlier resting heart rate, leads to me feeling just more and more awesome the next day and it's also impacted how I do things like intermittent fasting. So I hope you all check it out and if you want to check it out now, the guys at Oura are giving 50 dollars or 50 euros off depending on what part of the world you're in. So go to ouraring.com and plug in the code BOOMER for that discount. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 27Creating Peak Performance using Music with Dr. Costas Karageorghis
You can think of a music program almost contouring your expected heart rate. Starting at a low point, having a peak and then gradually coming down. If you're engaged in interval training such as HIIT - high intensity interval training - it might be that you have peaks and troughs in the energy of the music so as to reflect the physiological peaks and troughs in the workout. So I think the desired mental state and the underlying physiological state are drivers for the type of music that you would select. If I was stretching for example I might use a track such as No Diggity. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Dr. Karageorghis? Dr. Costas Karageorghis is a leader in sports psychology and Divisional Lead for Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences at Brunel University in London. From 2009-14, he served as Deputy Head (Research) of the former School of Sport and Education and led preparations for two REF2014 subject submissions (Sports-Related and Education). Costas has established an international reputation for his research into the psychological, psychophysiological and neurophysiological effects of music. He has captured 25 research grants during his academic career. Costas is the author of two textbooks, 12 book chapters, 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and 100 professional papers in sport and exercise psychology. Costas’s music research has been featured in newspapers around the world; most recently in the Times, Independent, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Sydney Morning Herald. He is currently working on multi-modal stimulation during physical activity that entails the use of music, video images, virtual reality and visual primes. Such work is oriented towards enhancing people's sensory experiences during physical activity, with a view to increasing exercise adherence and promoting public health. Costas is a chartered member of the British Psychological Society and a double-accredited member of BASES (psychology research and scientific support). In September 2010, he was elected a Fellow of BASES for his services to sport and exercise sciences in the UK. In September 2013 he was awarded Chartered Scientist status by the Science Council. Costas acts as consultant psychologist to a number of international and professional athletes and has worked with a wide variety of UK governing bodies of sport (e.g. British Athletics, British Canoe Union, British Water Ski Federation and England Hockey). He has also worked with many multinational companies in the sports world and music industry. During his spare time, Costas plays the piano, often performing in a jazz and latin duo with drummer Joel Shopland. Ep 26Neurological Stimulation for Faster Healing and High Performance with Garrett Salpeter
Instead of [the traditional stimulation device] paradigm, what we're trying to do is send more of a sensory signal so rather than a motor signal taking over the muscles and causing them to do something, we're actually sending a signal as if movement is taking place and even if it isn't, as if movement is taking place and seeing how the brain responds to movement. Remember the body is capable of doing more than it's currently doing. And if we send a signal that movement is happening in a certain area, we're going to be able to tap into where those limitations are actually occurring. As we scan around with the electrode, we're able to find areas where there's dysfunction. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Garrett Salpeter? Known as "The Health Engineer," Garrett has taken his education in Physics (BS) and Engineering (MSE) and applied it to a system for making the human body better. His journey started when he picked up ice hockey as a boy. It was a game he loved, but for which he had little natural aptitude. After several years "skating by," he decided to delve deeply into the world of strength and conditioning to try to give himself a chance to play at a higher level. Unfortunately, what was popular at the time did not work for him -- and he kept searching. In dealing with some injury problems, he learned about the paramount importance of the nervous system and saw the connections to how the same neurological principles could be applied to fitness. The neurological approach worked, and he never looked back. He became determined to learn as much as possible about how to affect the nervous system. To that end, he spent hundreds of hours in self-study, mentored under several leading-edge practitioners, tested many of his theories on himself and others, and even went back to school for a Ph.D. program in Neuroscience. In 2009, he opened his first facility in Austin, TX to start sharing these methods with his community. This has grown into what we now know as NeuFit, which combines an advanced understanding of physiology with the best practices from diverse training and therapeutic practices, and constantly pushes these processes by using technology to accelerate them further. Since that first day, he has worked with people of all ages and in almost all situations, including athletes from MLB, the NFL, the NHL, UFC, Olympics, NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, and more, helping them get out of pain, improve performance, sometimes avoid surgeries, and live life at a higher level. He lives in Austin, Texas and is ecstatically in love with his wife, Briana, and their two daughters, Gwenny and Gemma. What is the NEUBIE? NEUBIE is NeuFit’s patent-pending device. It is an acronym for “NEURO-BIO-ELECTRIC STIMULATOR.” The NEUBIE is engineered to take advantage of all of the amazing things we’ve learned about the nervous system in the last 2-3 decades. The nervous system controls every muscle movement. The NEUBIE wave form has two main benefits. (1) It provides direct current, and (2) it matches the signals the nervous system already sends naturally on its own. If a movement dysfunction is contributing to your pain, keeping you injured, limiting your mobility, or robbing you of performance, then the Neubie can help you. Key Highlights of the Podcast How Garrett went from engineer to neuroscience Garrett's background in ice hockey and its driving force behind NeuFit What is the NEUBIE? Ep 25EZ Water and the NanoVi with Hans Eng
We should not forget that our body, the human body is made out of minimum 900,000 different proteins. Most of the proteins we have no clue about. We know something about 30,000 but more than 850,000 proteins we have no clue about what they are, what they do and where they perform but whenever one of those proteins is losing its function we will run into a problem. Some of these problems we know we call them chronic diseases, we call them fatigue, we would call them lost of performance. We can also say simply we are ageing by losing protein functions because we accumulate more damage. By helping the body to regenerate and to repair those damages you would slow down the process of losing optimal functions. And in some cases we actually can reinstall functions that we lost and we perform better, we feel better, we are better. Ep 24The Wonderful World of Wearable Technology with Chuck Hazzard
Most of the fitness wearables are on the wrist because people are used to wearing watches and one thing that became apparent right off is they work reasonably well, they’ve gotten better at it but that is one of the worst places you can actually measure anything. There are a bunch of reasons for that - your tattoos, skin color, hair, you get vibration no matter how tight it is, you get a lot of interference from the sun, it’s much stronger than the LEDs they use on the watches. But the bigger thing is you don’t have a lot of concentration of where arteries handoff to capillaries, the blood, whereas in the finger you have a huge density of those. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Chuck Hazzard? Chuck serves as Oura's Vice President of Sales. Chuck Hazzard is an entrepreneur and technology expert, with a current focus on the wearable industry. In the past, Chuck has designed and built computer networks, developed software applications for large corporations, helped build a successful telecommunications business from the ground up, and more recently, helped a large telecommunications company develop and bring to market products and services yielding an additional $500 million in annual revenue. Chuck earned his BA in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Maine, where he also earned his JD at their School of Law. Chuck is also a graduate of the FDN program and is a licensed Heartmath Provider. Ep 20Sovereignty with Jordan Greenhall
If you imagine, lets just say a fighter, like a boxer. In the beginning, let’s imagine that our boxer’s poised. Meaning that he’s standing well balanced. That his ability to shift what he’s doing is actually very high. He can read and respond. And when he responds, the action that he takes keeps him in a position of being able to respond. My movement increases my ability to make better choices in the next moment. That’s what response means. Every choice you make has the characteristics of increasing your ability to make good choices in the next moment. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Jordan Greenhall? Jordan Greenhall is the CEO of Neurohacker Collective and is now in his seventeenth year of building disruptive technology companies. Comics, science fiction, computers, too much TV and role-playing games led to a deep dive into contemporary philosophy (particularly the works of Gilles Deleuze and Manuel DeLanda), artificial intelligence and complex systems science in college. Jordan graduated from Texas A&M and Harvard Law School where he spent time with Larry Lessig, Jonathan Zittrain and Cornel West examining the coevolution of human civilization and technology. In 1998, Jordan put all this stuff to use combining disruptive technology, movement building and a taste for going up against obsolete oligopolies. First as an early employee crafting strategy and product for MP3.com, then at InterVU (acquired by Akamai) and then finally in 2000 launching and leading the online digital video revolution as founder and CEO of DivX. After somewhat successfully navigating two financial crises and an IPO, he left the helm at DivX to return his attention to the big picture. Jordan participated in a number of think tanks and institutes; most notably, the Aspen Institute and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five sweet years. This exposure led him to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world-historical transition which will likely kill all of us (see Mad Max) but just might end in a truly amazing future (see Star Trek). Getting there is going to require many things of us – most notably a significant upgrade of our individual and collective capacity for thought and action. After one week on an early Neurohacker Collective stack, he was convinced about the power and potential of this new technology and joined Daniel Schmachtenberger and James Schmachtenberger to bring it to the world. What is Sovereignty? Sovereignty is an individual's capacity to respond to the world. The three elements of sovereignty are perception, sense-making and meaning-making, and action. Jordan defines sovereignty in his essay as, "It is the ability to be present to the world and to respond to the world — rather than to be overwhelmed or merely reactive. Sovereignty is to be a conscious agent." For additional information, listen to the podcast episode and read Jordan's essay, "On Sovereignty." Key Highlights on Sovereignty Why Jordan is excited about the election of Donald Trump What is sovereignty? The historical transition underway, the factors which could lead to an apocalyptic moment, and how it might end a utopian future Three key elements of sovereignty Where to start if you want build sovereignty How to scale from individual to collective sovereignty The role of blockchain in accomplishing global sovereignty Additional Resources on Sovereignty On Sovereignty by Jordan Greenhall On Thinking and Simulated Thinking by Jordan Greenhall Jordan's YouTube Channel Jordan's Medium page Final Questions What are Jordan's top tricks to enhance cognition? Ep 17Biological Rhythm Optimization with Azure Grant
The awareness that I gained when I started learning about the fact that my body naturally does different things best at different times of day was sort of very freeing in a sense that it let me become a little bit more self aware about when I felt best working and when I felt best resting Azure Grant is an editor at Quantified Self and a researcher in the field of biological rhythms. Her goal is to combine Chronobiology with Participant-Led Research using wearable sensors and signal processing to map individuals’ biological rhythms in the real world. Azure currently leads “Blood Testers,” a participatory Quantified Self project. The project created the highest temporal resolution lipid data set ever recorded in free-living humans. In addition, Azure researches the use of continuous body temperature data to investigate sleep, jet lag, and female cycling. An Introduction to Biological Rhythms and Temporal Structures Over the course of time, our cells organized to run more efficiently. There are time periods of activity. There are time periods of rest. Each of our cells has these instructions. When these cells organize in a fashion to perform a certain function (like keeping you awake), it becomes biological rhythms. As Azure mentions, "these rhythms occur without us doing anything. If you put a human or anyone in a box, they would sort of keep going. The rhythms allow our bodies to predict when something about the environment is likely to change." 2018 is my year of rhythms. In this episode, Azure and I dig deep into biological rhythms. Biological rhythms are an obsession of mine after constant travel and stress lead to health issues in my own life over two years ago. Ep 13Redefining Human Potential with Dr. Daniel Stickler
We’ve taken the complexity of the human system and try to make it complicated, which really doesn’t work when you’re looking at wellness, health optimization and really moving the body to a greater potential. So what we decided to do is instead of trying to shift or change the paradigm, we need to create a whole new paradigm. We call it human potential medicine but it’s essentially a systems based precision approach to health optimization. Affiliate Disclosure About the Guest: Dr. Daniel Stickler Dr. Stickler is the visionary pioneer behind the human potential medicine movement, a shift away from the disease model to limitless peak performance in all aspects of life. Dr. Stickler is a physician to high-performing entrepreneurs who want to optimize their performance. He is also an author, speaker, blogger, and host of the Ironman Executive podcast. Dr. Stickler is an expert in the use of genetics and epigenetics in clinical practice and trains healthcare clinicians from all over the world in the interpretation of genomic data for optimizing human potential. Dr. Stickler works with each client to develop personalized human potential optimization plans based on genetics, quality of life factors, and the seven foundational aspects of health. Dr. Stickler also serves as the Medical Director of Neurohacker Collective. Using Epigenetics to Optimize Performance Epigenetics is the study of the changes in organisms caused by modifications in gene expression rather than changes to the underlying genetic code. Our introduction to epigenetics provides a basic overview of epigenetics, epigenetic mechanisms, and lifestyle modifications leading to epigenetic change. The process of individualized health starts with a genetics test. The test provides a blueprint for lifestyle modifications leading to epigenetic change. Epigenetics is a science with 10,000+ peer-reviewed scientific studies released per year. Lifestyle Modifications Leading to Epigenetic Change: Your genetics are not your destiny. Through lifestyle modifications, you can change the expression of your genes. A few examples of lifestyle modification leading to epigenetic change: Intake of Omega 3 fatty acids leads to a change in expression of several hundred genes Chronic exercise changes the expression of almost 7,000 genes Meditation decreases inflammation through a downregulation of pro-inflammatory genes. Key Highlights from this Episode with Dr. Daniel Stickler: What is Human Potential Medicine? Why is epigenetics the systems approach to health? Ep 12Hacking Biology, Ulcers, and Your Work Environment with Teemu Arina
I’ve been interested in optimal performance for quite some time but I was focusing very much into my tools, the way I use technologies, computers, methods and so on. Basically what’s outside of me and how I interact with that world, how I solve problems. I was optimizing the way I work and how I learn and all that. But doing that I discovered that health is also a key component and taking care of your temple - your body - is super important if you want to really perform, ultimately. Affiliate Disclosure About the Guest: Teemu Arina Teemu is Chief Biohacker and Chairman of the board at Biohacker Center, a research center for digital health & wellness. Biohacker Center publishes the Biohacker’s Handbook series, airs the Biohacker’s Podcast, organizes the international Biohacker Summit conference and provides the Upgraded Workplace coaching & work welfare service for companies interested in taking their employee wellness and performance to the next level. In addition, the company organizes online courses, lectures & conference presentations, facilitates business opportunities for digital health & wellness industry members, provides market insights for digital health & wellness product developers and provides consultation services regarding optimal performance and better living through science. Teemu Arina is also co-author of the forthcoming Biohacker’s Handbook for optimizing health and wellbeing with technological and biological tools. Teemu Arina is a popular keynote speaker who has presented internationally in countries such as USA, UK, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, and Germany. He recently won Speaker of the Year by Speaker's Forum. Mr. Arina has held key advisory positions in national, international and EU development projects on topics related to online collaboration, e-learning, professional development, mobile learning and startup companies. The Hackable Variables in Your Work Environment The Biohacker's Handbook chapter on work (in English) is forthcoming. Ahead of the release of this chapter, Teemu shared his thoughts on the key variables in the work environment which are able to be altered for higher performance. The Problems: Limited Movement Lighting Air Quality Water Quality Stress How to Deal with Workplace Environment Problems: Much of this is discussed in more detail in the podcast episode. Many of us do not move enough throughout the day. Have you ever wondered why your Fitbit or Jawbone asks you to get 10,000 steps? From an evolution perspective, our ancestors moved this much. When you are stuck at a desk during the day, how is this possible to achieve? For one, get a standing desk. A standing desk, or adjustable desk, will force you to get up and move throughout the day. In addition, you can schedule meetings over walks, coffee, or even workouts to get more movement in your day. Our offices beam fluorescent lights throughout the day. While some may leave the office before sundown, others still work well into the night, at home, and even before bed. This is not to mention how you are staring at a screen all day long. To prevent long-term eye damage and get the most from your lights, utilize a one/two punch. Place Iris or F.lux on all of your devices. After you outfit the technology, switch your lights to Philips Hue's lights and have them follow the sun. Studies demonstrate the continued presence of nanoparticles in our air. Some of these nanoparticles, as well as mold and other toxins, end up in our brain and lead to sub-optimal performance. Fix this potential issue by outfitting your office and home with HEPA filters. Much of the United States tap water contains chlorine, fluoride, and potentially heavy metals. Reduce your risks through the use of a water filter. Teemu mentions Brita in the episode. Alternatives include Berkey Water Filters and Therasage (the CEO was on the show to speak about EMF here). Stress can lead to illness. However, stress is also beneficial. Remember the last deadline? As it came closer, the deadline drove you to focus. Much of stresses impact on us has to do with our perception of stress. You build stress resiliency through techniques like meditation and breathing. Ep 11The Art of Abundance with Dr. Ryan Wohlfert
Health is the optimal functioning of your body. Physically, chemically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally - all those things together. Health is not just “okay I’m not sick” or “I don’t have symptoms” or “I feel good” or “I look good”. It’s more than that. It’s a higher state of wellness and being. Affiliate Disclosure About the Guest: Dr. Ryan Wohlfert Dr. Ryan Wohlfert grew up in a small town outside of Lansing, Michigan. An acute interest in health and fitness led him to study at the University of Michigan where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in Kinesiology-Movement Science. Dr. Wohlfert went on to earn another Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude status, and his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the National College of Chiropractic. Dr. Wohlfert is also a Certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA) and Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP). In 2016, he started FitFamilyMan.com to help dads and husbands build their “Family Man 6-Pack” so they can live an abundant life and take care of their family forever. Dr. Wohlfert has been married to his wife for 15 years and they’re raising three beautiful girls. They are the reason he strives to be a fit family man. What is the Abundance Mindset? John Maxwell, Peter Diamandis, and Tony Robbins all emphasize a mindset of abundance. Steven Covey discusses abundance extensively in "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People." However, the dictionary does not define an abundance mindset. To define and understand the abundance mindset, it is easiest to look at the alternative, scarcity. The person with a scarcity or fixed mindset believes life is a zero-sum game. If someone has more, this means someone else must have less. The abundance mindset is different. It is the belief in a life of plenty. There is more than enough to go around. Whether it is resources, wealth, health, or opportunity, there is an abundance of resources available. In the words of Tony Robbins, Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure The Steps to Building an Abundance Mindset In our discussion, Dr. Wohlfert outlines a strategy for building the abundance mindset. If you tune into the podcast, Dr. Wohfert goes through each step in detail. Step 1 - Identify your self-talk and bring it to your awareness Step 2 - Aware - realize the self-talk is not helpful Step 3 - Interrupt - stop it from dragging down your day Key Highlights from The Art of Abundance Podcast What is health? Ep 10The Insider's Guide to Nootropics with Mansal Denton
The best approach for nootropics that I found and I try to impart on people is to think about them as tools where we can go from hopefully 95 to 100% in that range, just being totally optimized in ourselves to 105, 110% using nootropics. So hoping for some small increase above what we’re already capable of as opposed to what many people are drawn towards nootropics for, which is to go from 60, 70% because they got a bad night of sleep, bad diet, drinking alcohol in order to just simply get by or function and I think that taking that approach is really the first step. Affiliate Disclosure About the Guest: Nootropics Expert, Mansal Denton Mansal Denton is an entrepreneur. He has experience in many different ventures, organized a festival, published a book, and a myriad of other projects like donating books to prisoners. At age 20 he was arrested and at 23 sentenced to 8 years in the Texas State Penitentiary. This prison sentence has influenced Mansal’s life tremendously. With these unique life experiences, quirky behavior, and a somewhat arrogant nature, he has been featured on media outlets such as Entrepreneur, Huffington Post, Fox News, and Elite Daily. Mansal Denton is the creator or co-creator of Nootropedia, which is a website that provides unbiased and factual information on nootropics to the extent where it's actually available. He's also the creator of a documentary and a book called A Head Above: A Simple Guide to Peak Mental Performance which Mansal wrote in 30 days. Mansal lived in Switzerland, Poland, but currently resides in Austin, Texas. Disclosure on Nootropics This article and podcast episode do not constitute medical advice. Should you have interest in nootropics, please do your own research and consult your physician. What are Nootropics? The strict definition of nootropics is a synthetic or natural compound that improves markers of cognitive abilities without the risks or significant risk of side effects. Other cognitive enhancers which may have significant side effects are labeled as "Smart Drugs." For the purposes of this discussion, Mansal and I utilize "Nootropics" to describe both Nootropics and Smart Drugs. Non-Nootropic Cognitive Enhancement Intermittent Fasting Increasing one's capability without nootropics is possible. In this discussion, Mansal references intermittent fasting as a method to upregulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Mansal employs a fasting technique called 16-8. In this strategy, a person would fast for 16 hours of the day, only having an 8-hour eating window. Additional fasting strategies, such as 3-day water only fasts can be utilized under the supervision of a physician for different results. Deep Work Similar to previous podcast guest Peter Joosten, Mansal often employs "Deep Work."The concept is based largely on Cal Newport's book entitled Deep Work (link below). Mansal defines Deep Work as "uninterrupted work that is 100% free from distraction." Mansal tracks his time religiously. He utilizes earplugs, a specific morning routine, the "Inbox When Ready" app for Google Chrome, a gratitude practice, meditation, and putting his phone in airplane mode to eliminate distraction. Who are Nootropics for? Who are they not for? Nootropics require a solid foundation of health in order to get the maximum benefits. This includes: optimal sleep, solid nutrition, and a reasonable exercise regimen. Once these areas are reached, nootropics may provide additional cognitive enhancement. In the words of many health practitioners, you cannot out-supplement a bad diet. If you are looking for a magic pill (NZT in Bradley Cooper's case), nootropics are not for you. Is Modafinil the closest thing to NZT? If you considering taking modafinil, you may want to check your COMT gene (rs4680). AA variants tend to barely benefit than others when taking modafinil. Do any long-term studies exist on Nootropics? What is the quality of these studies? What are the Racetams? How can they benefit you?
