S7 Ep 3FLAVOR TEXT: Silicon Valley

E

Ten years ago, purveyor of the human condition and scion of the future Mike Judge created another hit series as a follow up to the likes of Office Space, Idiocracy, and King of the Hill. This series would go on to shine a now-familiar light on the silliness and cartoonishly villainous behavior of the wacky tech moguls of the San Francisco Bay Area. Silicon Valley made careers out of Kumail Nanjiani, Thomas Middleditch, and Jimmy O. Yang, and helped put T.J. Miller's career in the grave. Join us this month as we break down all 6 seasons of this iconic HBO series. Special thanks to friend of the show and #buttthwompnation member Deb for commissioning today's episode! S7 Ep 2Ep. 136: Dice Wars: Revenge of the Six

E

It's season premiere episode time, nerds! And, as this is the premiere of Season 7, we've decided to leave everything related to the number 6 in the past. That might not seem like much, but it means that we're throwing away all the 6-sided dice in the world. You read that correctly, all the d6s are going away forever and we here at DT!HQ are in charge of replacing them. Join us as we kick off DT! Season 7 and decide "Which dice is the best dice?" Kyle makes a shockingly weak pitch for the d10. Todd makes a shockingly strong pitch for the d4. Matt makes a shocking pitch. Who will stand victorious amongst the battlefields of the Dice Wars? S6 Ep 43FLAVOR TEXT: Flavor Text Wrap Up (Pt 2)

E

Early last year, we took stock of all the FLAVOR TEXT episodes we had recorded by that time and sorted them all in a tier list, which resulted in The Witcher being our most favorite and Kingdom Hearts our least. Now with 20+ more under our belt, we're doing that all over again by both ranking this new batch separately and then together with the first batch. The second batch of FTs ranked: https://imgur.com/a/ULWskUE All FTs up-to-date ranked: https://imgur.com/a/1DuNCIt If you'd like to commission your own FLAVOR TEXT and see your chosen media hopefully beat out Amory Wars, check out our Patron page at patreon.com/debatethiscast. S6 Ep 42Ep. 135: Set Phasers to Pizza

E

Happy Winter Season of Non-Denominational Holiday Celebration™ to all of you who celebrate non-denominationally! Happy Tuesday™ to those of you who don't! It's time for our final debate of the year and our annual shitty peripheral gift exchange! Unfortunately, DT!HQ is a little short on budget this year, so we decided to exchange gifts with the local pawn shop as opposed to each other. So today we've gathered together to decide on the best video game peripheral to sell to a pawn shop? Matt brought a plank of wood. Andrew brought a slice of Pizza. Todd brought an oldie that is most certainly also a goodie. We make the joke all the time that the most common trope of any anime, JRPG, or many other Japanese-created media is to ultimately kill God with the Power of FriendshipTM. But, why is that? S6 Ep 40Ep. 134: Grumpy Matt's Worst Christmas Ever

E

The weather outside is getting frightful, but the fire is getting oh so delightful...Or that's how these show notes would have started if we actually recorded a holiday episode. Instead, we recorded an episode about Made-For-TV-Movies and what it would be like if we made those into video games. Just to be clear, no one picked the Made-For-TV-Movie you wanted them to. Nope, not even that one. Kyle is created the worst (best?) ever modern farming sim. Andrew wrote a script. Todd's main character has a lot of names and that's really all there is to remember about his answer. E

Welcome, brave adventurers, to Mythic Quest! Here you will find office shenanigans, disregarded player feedback, and the most infuriating way to pronounce "Ian" you can think of. Join us today as we take a deep dive into the Apple+ show Mythic Quest: Ravens Banquet, a brainchild of Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney. S6 Ep 38Ep. 133: Solve for XP

E

Two and a half years ago, we created a bit in which Todd, Kyle and Matt act as Andrew's collective dads in a Final Fantasy world. Then, a year and a half ago, we revisited this concept a second time. WELL, everyone knows you can't have a trilogy without a third entry. So today we welcome back Sad Dad, Bad Dad and Rad Dad for another Final Fantasy episode! This time we're asking the age old questions, which Final Fantasy location would be the best place to retire? Matt introduces the family to his entrepreneurial dreams. Todd discusses the dad-tastic urge to visit historical battlefields. Kyle makes the required Heavensward joke. Recommended reading: Debate This! Ep. 80: My Man-Sized Step-Wolf Debate This! S6 Ep 37Ep. 132: An Exercise in Practicing Restraint

E

You know what? It's been a minute since the last time we attempted to save the DC Cinematic Universe. That said, it's only been about three weeks since the last time we "made a series like Disney Plus's Loki." Well, for some reason, we've decided to recapture both of the aforementioned magics and save the DC Cinematic Universe with a series like Disney Plus's Loki! This week we're asking the simple question, "Which DC Villain should lead their own limited run series that isn't Peacemaker or Harley Quinn?" Andrew threw all of his creativity out the window for this episode and that's all we'll say about that. Matt speaks to the primal urge of man that is de-handling panhandles. We also finally gave Kyle the email log in so he can see the show notes! The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! A very happy Spooky Day to all who celebrate. Big wheels keep on turning and train whistles keep on blowing! It's Week 3 of Spooktacular Express Season and this week we're reviving those classic, Universal movie monsters. If you're a long time listener to DT!, you've probably heard the phrase "metal dracula" before. Well, for the first time since Season 1, we're back with that same, dumb energy. There's no stops on this week's monster mashup, even though someone should have stopped Andrew before he rewrote Phantom of the Opera as a Glee episode. *Insert train whistle here* It's Spooktacular Express time y'all! Gear up for our month-long, Halloween-themed content adventure as we bored the train for a Goosebumps land! That's right listener, we're reaching deeper into the Scholastic Book Fair well to create semi-spooky horror games. The goal this week is to create the best possible video game adaptation of a classic Goosebumps tale. Nobody tell R.L. Stine, but these games have just as much to do with the source material as their covers used to. The Spooktacular Express makes a few stops in spooky locations this week. Matt requested the conductor to drop him off at a spooky, secret amusement park deep in the forest. Todd's doing a time travel thing in a big spooky tower. S6 Ep 31Ep. 129: Live, Laugh, Lekgolo

E

Workers' rights and labor unions have been dominating the headlines in the US for the last few months. While that is probably the most culturally relative sentence we've ever put in our shownotes, it is also the sentence that inspired today's dumb bit. In an effort to prove that we are, in fact, a pro-union podcast, we're helping video game characters organize. So settle in for your union-mandated break and listen along as we answer the question "What group of video game characters should be the next to unionize?" All three answers today force us to define what a "manager" is. Todd talks more about Voltron than you'd expect. Andrew is really committing to a bit within a bit. Kyle comes to the table to represent the population of our favorite sovereign nation. S6 Ep 30FLAVOR TEXT: The Dark Tower

E

In the early 2000s, Stephen King listened to Lou Bega's Mambo No. 5 so much that his wife, who stuck by his side through decades of alcohol and drug use, almost left him. It is with that same fervor that King wrote the topic of today's flavor text The Dark Tower. King's eight and a half book epic follows the strong but silent Roland Deschart across the All-World and the Stephen King Extended Universe as he makes his way to The (titular) Dark Tower, and his destiny. Along the way our hero kills a kid, fights Lobstrosities and...well you'll just have to listen to the episode. It should come as no surprise to you, dear listener, that DT!HQ is a pet-friendly office. We've hosted a few pet shows here in the office, but last year, the DT! No Bummers Program Committee hosted a dog show like no Thanksgiving Day has ever seen. Well the DT!NBPC is back at it, but dogs are so 2000 and late. This year, we're hosting a cat show in hopes of determining which cat is the best cat in all of video games! Kyle brought a low-hanging, albeit delicious fruit that will surprise absolutely no one. S6 Ep 28Ep. 127: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Perv Pods

E

Hey, do you guys remember Secret Invasion? That Marvel show with Samuel L Jackson and Daenerys Targaryen? Yeah, that one! Well it just came out in July and all four of us watched it. Not only did we watch it, but tens of other people watched it as well. So, in honor of this massive smash hit about shape shifting aliens, the debaters are here to pitch some new games. This week we're asking, "Which video game sequel would be ...better?... with shape shifting Skrulls?" Matt is here to test your tolerance for collectathons as well as puns. Kyle is bringing out an old, DT! classic. Todd's answer is honestly just gross. The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community! S6 Ep 27DLC EPISODE: Extended Good Vibes! Clip Show 2

E

Happy Tuesday! All four of us were traveling together this weekend for Kyle's bachelor party, and we opted for IRL friendship over recording an episode. Instead, we humbly present to you a sampling, a best-of if you will, of our Patreon-exclusive post show, Extended Good Vibes! For the uninitiated, we keep the mics rolling for an extra 30ish minutes after each DT! episode to talk about what got left on the cutting room floor, what we're watching on TV, and just our general opinions on the universe. Today's ramblings are from the post shows of episodes 122-126. We hope you enjoy this easy listening week, because we'll be back with Episode 127 next week and boy is it a WILD one. E

If you've listened to this podcast for more than a few weeks, you've probably heard at least one of our hosts complain about common RPG elements like turn-based combat and complex menuing. Maybe you agree with those complaints, or maybe you don't, but one thing is for sure, the garden-variety "JRPGs" just aren't for everyone. There are gamers out there in the gamerverse who prefer baby games for babies. One of those gamers may cohost this podcast. Well, in honor of those who prefer controllers with two buttons, this week we're simplifying your favorite crunchy video games! Todd is going to talk more about classical music than you're prepared for. Kyle may or may not be dunking on everyone's favorite 5v5 hero shooter. Andrew is going to draw the line between Final Fantasy and kart racing games, and it will be critically acclaimed. S6 Ep 24Ep. 125: All's Fair in Love and Chicken War

E

November 19, 2006, also known as the day the Earth stood still, saw the release of S-tier console, the Nintendo Wii. Unbeknownst to most, the rise of the Nintendo Wii awoke an ancient sleeping monstrosity that had laid dormant in the games industry since the SNES era. That ancient monstrosity was a type of games called "Shovelware." For the uninitiated, shovelware is a term for games that were hastily developed to showcase quantity over quality. You probably rented at least one of these games accidentally from Giant Eagle, or were gifted one by an estranged family member for Christmas. Well today, we here at DT!HQ are going to turn shovelware games into AAA megahits! Kyle is here to talk about a racing game this week, but it's not the one you think. Andrew's answer will remind you of that weird time when we were all really into clay-mation. Matt is also here, and he's doing too much. Recommended reading: Flavor Text: Console Wars Debate This! S6 Ep 22The Office Drones: Episode Sacramento (LIVE At Origins Game Fair)

E

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to do a live show of our Patreon-exclusive D&D show, The Office Drones, to a very open-minded audience at Origins Game Fair here in Columbus, OH. It was a super good time and everyone there was really cool with playing in the weird space of a side episode based on a show that's been running for 3+ years on a closed Patreon feed they'd never heard of owned and operated by a podcast they'd also never heard of. This is the recording of that episode, and it was a BLAST. We created all new characters that live in the extended Office Drones universe, but rest assured no prior knowledge is necessary to enjoy this one-off episode. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just hit theaters a few weeks ago and it's safe to say this is Sony's best Marvel movie since 2018's Into the Spider-Verse. Well the execs over at Sony are ready to ride the Spider Train all the way to moneyville! They've reached out to DT!HQ for help crafting a new, Spiderman-based, genre-inspired cinematic universe. That's why this week, we're digging into Wikipedia to find the wildest Spiders Men from across the Marvel Universe and assigning them a matching film genre! Matt is here to play fast and loose with spiders, men and punctuation. Andrew tells the story of a True American Hero (TM) as only a Horse Movie (TM) can. Four years ago, we asked the question "Which Legend of Zelda Item Would You Bring with You to a Deserted Island?" Well, in case you didn't notice, a big, beautiful, new Legend of Zelda game released last month and it's time for us to recapture the magic and surf the SEO wave! So, just like season 3 of Lost, we have to go back. Inspired by Tears of the Kingdom, this week we're asking, "Which two Legend of Zelda Items Would You Bring with You to a Deserted Island?" When all your problems are nails, everything is a hammer. Unfortunately for Todd, there are no nails on this island. Matt hasn't played TotK yet, but he has seen 2000's Castaway and that has to be something. Meanwhile, Kyle is here to ask more questions about video game physics than we could possibly answer. April showers have brought May flowers and as winter transitions to spring, we here at DT!HQ are looking for something seasonal to celebrate! Unfortunately, we've already passed the Q1 holidays. So, in an effort to save this loosely constructed episode topic, we reached back into our collective high school trauma and decided to do a Prom Episode! Now, when I think of Prom, the first video game I think of is 1987's Punch-Out!! That's why this week we're asking the question, "Which Punch-Out!! Boxer would you take to prom?" Andrew ventured to the Great White North in search of a date and a gallon of maple syrup. Kyle is making an entrance with the power of dance and white leisure suits. Todd is actually still banned from DT!HQ Prom, so we invited a new friend to our Prom Group. Instead of turning an existing game into an edutainment game, this week we attempt to turn existing historical events into playable video games! We even invited a guest this time! Kyle is here to talk about everyone's favorite nexus point, and also put us all on a list. Todd rehashes a tumblr post that we promise you've seen at least twice. E

We here at DT!HQ have certainly hit our stride when it comes to remakes of cable television shows. We've talked about Cribs, Forged in Fire, Forged in Fire again, Celebrity Rehab and a number of other gems of the 2000s. Today we're running it back and dipping a toe into the Reality TV Universe (RTVU). It is our mission today to use the path laid by the RTVU to guide the future of the MCU. So with that in mind, today we're asking, "what would be the best reality show to remake starring the X-Men?" It's honestly a little disturbing how much we knew about reality TV. Matt flexes his knowledge with a deep cut WB show. Andrew scopes in on the personality of late 90s Nickelodeon Teens. Todd completes the infernal contract we must sign to talk about reality television as he invokes the name of the Bachelor(ette). DT!HQ takes a firm stance against gatekeeping. Whether your favorite games are on a console, a PC, or a mobile device, we consider you a gamer and you are valid. Unless, of course, you're one of the perverts still playing Facebook games in 2023. If you aren't keeping up with the news out of the Meta-camp, the Metaverse isn't exactly headed to the moon. Well luckily for old Zucks, the execs called us in to help revitalize that smooth VR hellscape. Today, we're gathered around the proverbial Round Table to decide which Facebook game would be the best to integrate into the Metaverse. You're going to hear about a lot of games today, most of them you'll at least remember hearing about. Matt's answer is not one of those games. Todd and Kyle, on the other hand, went with games that you'll be much more familiar with. Or you will be, if you're into match three and idle games. Recommended Reading: Debate This! There is truly no spin-off too obscure for us to turn into a DT! episode. And, when a spin-off begins to pick up speed on a major streaming service, it is our job--nay, our duty--to turn it into a silly podcast about comics or video games. So, it should be no surprise to you, a listener of culture, that we're persenting to you today an episode based on Netflix mega-hit, FiF:KoD! Oh, that's Forged in Fire: Knife or Death for you uncultured dweebs. This week, we seek to discover which comic book weapon would perform the best in a History Channel Knife Sports show. If you came here for Norse mythology, Andrew has something special for you. Someone had to talk about a DC property, so we left that for Kyle. Todd's answer has the emphasis on the wrong syllable. E

Happy Valentine's Day freaks! Look, I'm just going to say it up front, this is the horniest episode we've released in approximately 47 episodes. If you're not cool with that, then get out now. But if you are cool with that, my co-hosts and I saw you from across the bar and we really dig your vibe. It's all love here folks, and to prove it, we're crafting some new love interests. Today's debate asks which video game boss encounter would make the best romance option. The answer, as always, may surprise you. It's one of those episodes where Andrew boils the noun soup that is Final Fantasy. Kyle talks about forbidden love and Matt says the word "goo" a lot. Obviously, the DT! boys aren't exactly kings of romance, so we called in a ringer this week. Jennasis from the Two Girls, One Ship Podcast answered the call and we're sure glad she did! S6 Ep 5DLC EPISODE: CBCB:CBBC Pilot

E

What even is that title? It's just a bunch of letters? Anyway, this bonus episode is one from the Patreon vault! Last summer, we had a Summer 'O' Pilots on the DT! Premium feed. We ran four pilots to test out some formats for a new Patreon Show and we're about to let our Patrons vote on the best one. You may remember hearing a clip show on this feed last year which featured three of those four pilots. If not, it'll be linked below. Well today we present you with the fourth and final show, a show that the DT! crew has been workshopping for a while now using the most cumbersome title yet. This month, Todd leads us all in a monthly comic book club where we will dissect the first issue of Marvel's 8-issue Secret Invasion arc from 2008. It's got espionage, double-crosses, and a whooooole lotta butts. Recommended Reading: "DLC EPISODE: Summer 'O' Pilots! Clip Show" This episode was sponsored by MANSCAPED! E

Look, everyone knows if you don't get at least 1 trillion downloads on your Season 6 premiere episode, you'll never make it in podcasting. With that in mind, we've decided to change our format up here a little bit at DT!HQ. As of right now and probably definitely forever, we're a true crime podcast! We're excited to embark on this bold, new journey. But, we also understand the value of staying in our lane. That's why we're kicking off our true crime journey by deciding what the best(?) video game crime to make a podcast about could be! Our 3 debaters all cover a different major faction of true crime. S6 Ep 3FLAVOR TEXT: Console Wars

E

Before Xbox and Playstation were waging war in the 2000s, we were dealing with the console war version of the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The shot heard 'round the world was a simple phrase: "Sega does what Ninten-don't." We all remember the bold and edgy marketing that drew the line in the sand. Brother against brother, we all had to take a side in the console wars of the 90s, but that's not the whole picture of a story that starts years earlier. Join us today as Matt walks us through the earliest console wars in today's FLAVOR TEXT guaranteed to hit you hard right in the nostalgia bone. S6 Ep 2Ep. 114: Atomic Purple Malarkey Maker

E

We're kicking off season 6 with a monumental task. Listen, we don't just say, "yes!" to everything that is asked of us here at ol' DT!HQ, but when your country comes a-callin', you must answer. IRL President Joey Bides dropped a line to the DT! Marketing Department to ask for help with the most patriotic of problems: The rebranding of America. That's right everyone. The Red, White, and Blue are so two thousand and late that Joey Bides wants us to pick a new color to usher forth a revitalized American Spirit. That said, he wants us to pick a color from a very specific list--the list of N64 controller colors. Welcome to the State of the DT!HQ. Set your DVR for C-SPAN as we answer the age old question: What color of N64 controller is the best? Every debate needs its chump answer, and Kyle is here to tell you it's not Atomic Purple. Andrew yearns for the absolute radness of the 1990s while he reminisces about Extreme Green. Matt plants his flag with the 99% and gives the most accessible, albeit the most boring answer of the day. E

Imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/8O43LUA There are cultural touchstones we can all count on as nerds who grew up in the 90's. A closet full of Nintendo Power issues that we suckered our parents/grandparents into paying for is certainly one of them. S5 Ep 44Ep. 112: Are We Baddy or Are We Daddy?

E

In the earliest days of 2017, a new gaming style swept the nation as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds introduced the world to the Battle Royale. It wasn't long before every 10-year-old had downloaded PUBG on their parents' iPads and joined the hunt for that illusive winner winner chicken dinner. Battle Royale games pit 100 (or some other arbitrary number) players against each other to see who is the very best like, no one ever was. UNRELATED: A new Pokemon game just came out! Sure would be weird to combine those two ideas, right? Sure would be weird to ask the debaters to create the best possible Pokemon Battle Royale game, right? Matt struggles this week to determine the difference between day and night. Todd is the middleman this week as he answers the exact question that he was asked. Andrew makes a mistake, and the rest of the crew call him on it. The title of this week's episode was selected by our Patrons in our Discord Community!
