It’s a controversial thing because some people consider the floor to be the 5th wall and the ceiling as the 6th, but that’s not what we think. The ceiling is something we strongly feel can really set rooms apart in design, and create a lot of energy and magic surrounding what’s happening up above the head. Could you please do a session on lighting, like finding pieces that speak to each other room to room, dealing with custom shades. Do all lamps have the custom shades? For example, I have 4 lamps and they all have a beautiful fermoie shade that flank the perimeter of the room, but when I bring lamps into the center, I was going to coordinate, or even juxtapose that with a modern lamp. Design is a wild and complicated business to get into. Of all the designers out there, somehow we all end up doing it differently. In the school of design, they don’t teach you that your business should be done a certain way, they just teach you the art of design and the different types of design: commercial, residential, etc., or little classes that teach you how to do things like purchase orders, sales estimates, how to work with vendors, and internal trade secrets that you’ll need to know, but how to run a business is much more broad and really just comes down to the individual and their way of doing things. Sue and Jess went to High Point Market and got to see what is up and coming for Spring of 2024. This is fashion week for interior designers and much like some people go to New York, or Milan, Sue and Jess go to North Carolina and they get to see what all the furniture makers are up to. The furniture makers are making new silhouettes, using new fabrics and finishes that are gonna be available for this coming Spring, and they’re just kind of seeing what’s new in lighting, rugs, furniture, case goods, mirrors, accessories, and everything across the board. We are doing another episode on real estate because we had such a massive response to our last episode on real estate. There was an article that came out from The Washington Post, which was titled “HGTV is making our homes boring and us sad, one study says.” It goes in to unpack that everybody is trying to make their homes these perfect places like you see on TV, and we all know that the home is often the biggest investment we make in a lifetime and our whole lives and the lives of those around us are tied up in our homes. So HGTV tells us that we have to make our homes the nicest possible and decorate it for the masses, and not our own happiness. Because there’s so much pressure to make our homes for the masses and maintain its value in the public eye, we might find there is much less of a personal touch to it. We had a listener question and they asked how Jess and Suz became such good friends, so we thought it would be really fun to focus on that story in this episode. Sue had this epiphany the other day when we were driving down the road and talking about what to talk about on the podcast and she said she had a juicy one. Taste is an ever evolving thing that we should be feeding, which will continue to change and be molded over time as we are exposed to different things. The reason we felt like we should do a sconces episode is because Jess got a text back in December from a good friend in real estate who said that his wife can’t see herself when she’s putting makeup on. Jess asked him for a picture of his setup and when he send over the image, she noticed he had the wrong type of sconces next to his mirror, which was a really beautiful, very elegant sconce, but it had a linen shade on it and one candelabra bulb in each sconce. The window was behind her, so there was no light on her face. Jess told him he had the wrong type of sconces for a bathroom and this got us thinking that there may be a lot of other people out there that don’t know about all the different types of sconces and what they’re used for, how to optimize them for lighting, and where to put them in your home.
