One of the coolest projects I worked on in my time with the World of Outlaws was the Open Red podcast. From 2016 to 2020, me and the video guy for WRG, Ross Wece, co-hosted 190 episodes featuring a who's who of sprint car racing including every series champion, some greats of the sport, today's stars and more. We also did some crazy stuff like put Ross in a midget at the Chili Bowl with the help of our listeners. In the year I've been gone from World Racing Group, Ross has also now moved on, and today the show is hosted by Rob Blount and Nick Graziano. This time on Conversations, I wanted to do a reunion of sorts and get the band back together. Ross joins me to chat about his new video guy job in the NASCAR world, and we also talk a bunch about Open Red and the current state of dirt racing. In dirt racing, for every Donny Schatz and Brad Sweet there are dozens of guys like Brian Smith. Brian is a regular in 410 competition at Fremont Speedway in Ohio, but is far from a professional racer. He has a full time job during the week and a family to look after, but has figured out a formula to get himself to the track each week and compete. He joins me on this episode to talk about how he makes it all work, his full time All Star season back in 1998, how he ran second to Cole Macedo a few weeks ago when he didn't even plan on racing, and his post race traditions of freezer pops and Hot Wheels races for the kids. Brian had me laughing the whole time and I left our conversation with a ton of respect for him.
