Relationships can bring the greatest joy in your life, however they can also bring the most pain. Many people don’t put a lot of thought into what it takes to build a healthy relationship. I know for me, for many years I took relationships for granted in my life. To build a healthy relationship you need a healthy relational culture in your home, extended family or any organisations you may be involved with. To do that you need to make intentional investments into the foundation of your relationships. There are three primary relationships that require investment, with God, with yourself and with others. When one of those relationships is out of line, it affects the others. The best investment you can make is to work on the 5 pillars of your relational foundation; Trust, Communication, Authenticity, Honesty and Honour. This video series takes you on a journey to build those pillars into the fabric of how you relate to yourself and others. The process in the worksheets and the daily work uniquely sets you up for success! In this video series you will learn: How to build trust equity How to have healthy communication How to live authentically How honesty is a superpower How to reclaim the lost art of honour https://www.markgordon.ca/ Mark's Podcast - Relationship Matters - https://pod.link/1608250610 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dad-space-podcast/message

Providing for a family.I always knew I could be more. I knew I had unlimited potential. I had a strict dad which formed the first part of my identity. Work hard, be good, do the right thing. Now after working on myself for over 11 years, spending tens of thousands of pounds on education, coaching and mentorship, as well as helping men get out of their own hell, I have found my purpose. I'm happy, I can run far, lift heavy, touch my toes and most importantly, I have the energy to play with my little boy. Ep 46E46 - Andy Izard - When A Podcast Helped, NICU Moments, and The Raft Project
E46 - Andy Izard - When A Podcast Helped, NICU Moments, and The Raft Project Our Guest - Andy Izard Also a Phoenix native, as a baby Andy was always connecting with strangers…even from his stroller. You’d almost think he's always had “I care about you” written across his forehead. Growing up, Andy did everything: sailing, scuba diving, flying, climbing trees, riding motorcycles, target shooting, and playing sports. He still loves to be outside – surrounded by pine needles. Andy is one of the safest people in the world for the gritty stuff. The shit that makes other people laugh uncomfortably and change the subject. Probably because in his teens and early 20s, Andy struggled with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and addiction. He understands not being ok. That’s one of the reasons he got his BA in Psychology. In the many jobs Andy has worked, from security to sales to business ownership, his goal has been helping people feel seen, heard, and safe. And no one more than his wife Kayla and son Sammy. His greatest loves. The Raft Project https://www.theraftproject.com/ Official Bios Kayla and Andy Izard are authors, speakers, founders, and facilitators changing the way the world does connection. Their movement, The Raft Project, is making support normal and expected. Along with creating a safe space for real conversations in their community, they've poured their hearts into a book, Good, and You? How to Get Real Support Instead of Faking It, which released spring 2023. Good, and You? explores support and community in a real, practical, lively way. After Andy’s prolonged mental breakdown in 2018, they doggedly pursued an open support group concept to process what they were experiencing. They knew they needed support – what they didn’t expect was so many others looking for the exact same thing. While Kayla has BA in Communications and Andy in Psychology, this movement is built mostly on lived experience and an unwavering passion to do good for other people and themselves. The Book: Good, and You? launching April 4th! Why is connection, vulnerability, and support so damn hard sometimes? How can we have more access to each other than ever, and still be so lonely? What will it take for us to open up about the things that actually matter? Ep 44E44 - Dr. Sam Goldman - for children with sensory issues, eating is hard
EPISODE 44 - Dr. Sam Goldman - for children with sensory issues, eating is hard When your child struggles to eat a variety of food, it can be frustrating and overwhelming. You might feel like you’ve tried it all, and just don’t know what else to do. Maybe, you’ve even been told it’s your fault because you don’t “force them” to eat. Can I ease your mind a bit? The truth is, that for children with “sensory issues,” eating is hard. And even though your child may want to eat to make you happy, something in their body just feels icky. You’re not a bad parent, and you’re not alone. You just need the right tools so you can confidently help your child learn to explore and try new foods. And I have the tools you need. My online course teaches you the secrets you need to help your child explore and try new foods. Hi! I’m Sam (or as my client’s know me “Dr. Sam) and this is my rescue dog Wolfie. I’m on a mission to bring the magic back into mealtime by teaching parents how to help their children with feeding difficulties explore and try new foods without the mealtime battles. I’ve spent the last 8 years working as an occupational therapist in the hospital system helping families improve their child’s development and eating. Throughout my time as an occupational therapist I’ve worked with countless families in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), pediatric care unit (PICU), and cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), as well as in outpatient clinics. The more I worked with the children, the more I began to notice that parents weren’t getting the education they needed. While the children were doing great in therapy sessions, parents struggled to carryover the techniques at home – because they didn’t really understand what they were doing and why. I know how frustrating it can be to worry that you’re not doing the right thing for your child. So I’ve taken what I’ve learned about feeding difficulties and the sensory system and packaged it into an online educational course for parents, to empower you with the tools you need to overcome mealtime battles. https://www.drsamgoldman.com/ https://dadspace.ca/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dad-space-podcast/message

Ep 35E35 - How to to be a Happy Dad and enjoy a Happy New Year - What Happiness Isn't and What it actually is
E35 - How to to be a Happy Dad and enjoy a Happy New Year We greet each other with a Happy New Year on January 1st - we wear silly hats, fireworks fill the sky and a new year starts. My question to Dad's this year, how can we be a Happy Dad this year? The difference between a rut and a grave is the depth of the hole! We get stranded in a rut of what we think is happiness, but turns out, these things do not lead to happiness Human beings are wired with an innate potential for happiness, but if you're like most people, you're not entirely sure what happiness is. Well, here are six things that happiness isn't: Happiness isn't about being wealthy. Money buys you comfort, support, and freedom of action, but it doesn't make you happy. Happiness isn't about being powerful. Power is about exerting your will on others; happiness comes from working together in mutually satisfying ways. Happiness isn't about achieving success. Some of the most successful people are very unhappy — and vice versa. The only exception: people who decide to succeed at being happy. Happiness isn't just about being excited. If you fall down a flight of stairs, there certainly is a great deal of excitement — but you're surely not happy! Sadly, excitement often creates an illusion of happiness — and that illusion doesn't last. Happiness isn't a life-transforming experience. Happiness is momentary — it comes and goes — but it doesn't change your life in any significant way. Enjoy happiness while you have it! Happiness isn't always an easy thing to achieve. Most people have to work at being happy. Life has its challenges, for sure, so how do you deal with them? *source So How can we be a Happy Dad? Try these instead! Be Present - It’s really simple. When you’re spending good quality time with your kids don’t think about what you didn’t do yesterday or what you have to do tomorrow or next week. LIVE. IN. THE. MOMENT Let Your Kids Be Themselves - Your children are individuals. They need to be who they are so they can figure out this big world we live in. Enjoy their uniqueness and celebrate their differences. Forgive and Ask Forgiveness - Whatever your kid does it’s important that you forgive them and make sure to let them know that you forgive them. If there is conflict make sure it is settled before bedtime. Parenting with guilt only leads to misery. Be Consistent - Show up, be the constant in your family. You being there brings safety and harmony which can fuel happiness! Play With Your Kids - I know this isn’t always the easiest thing to do because you have a huge to-do list that is constantly running in your head (we all do). But at the end of the day I’m sure you when you look back at your day the best part will be the time you actually spent with your kids. Don’t Compare - Stop chasing your tail - be content with what you have and model for your kids that the accumulation of things is not the source of happiness! Take Care of Yourself - Make time for yourself and take care of you. *source - https://goodmenproject.com/families/7-secrets-to-being-a-happy-dad-wat/ Thanks for being apart of Dad Space - if you are looking for a group of guys that would love to do life with you as a Dad head over to https://dadspace.ca/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dad-space-podcast/message

Ep 33E33 - How to Cope When You Are Alone over the Holidays
EPISODE 33 - How to Cope When You Are Alone over the Holidays In general, there are three ways to cope with being alone at Christmas. First, you can address your mental state and how it is contributing to your loneliness. Second, you can find things to do at Christmas that make you feel less alone. Third, you can plan ahead so that you are not alone this time next year if you don't want to be. Tips for Coping With Loneliness at Christmas One way to cope with being alone on Christmas is to actually go out and do something productive. Rather than spend the day at home alone, find something that you can do that fits with your mindset and mental state for the day. For example, if you feel full of energy, and the weather is decent, go for a long run. If you feel social, consider attending a church service to be in the presence of others. Below are some other ideas to keep you from focusing on the fact that you are alone this holiday. Say 'Yes' Perhaps you are alone this year because you turned down invitations. Know that it's OK to call those people back and say "yes." This is often a problem for those with social anxiety—you turn down invitations only to regret it and feel lonely afterward. Take Time to Volunteer One way to gain a better appreciation for the good things in your life is to get involved in volunteering. During the holidays, volunteering is a way to connect with others, boost your self-esteem, and bring joy to people who are less fortunate. Consider offering to help serve dinner at a soup kitchen, bring gifts to a children's hospital, or visit lonely residents at a nursing home. If You're Having Difficulty Coping If you are feeling really down about being alone on Christmas and can't pull yourself out of it, reach out for help. Call a friend, family member, or a helpline. Regardless of whether you are physically separated from people on Christmas, you should never feel like you are lacking support. There are people who would love to hear from you and trained volunteers waiting to support and counsel you. If you or a loved one are struggling with social anxiety disorder, contact the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 for information on support and treatment facilities in your area. Ep 31E31 - Finding Your Way Back To Your Element, When You Are Out of It
EPISODE 31 - Finding Your Way Back To Your Element, When You Are Out of It I have been reading Finding your Element by: Sir Ken Robinson - it is definitely a book worth reading. It is fully packed with inspiration and motivates you to make the best of your life. The book is full of exercises, which help you to define your areas of interests and find your element. I have pulled out a few thoughts from this book to share with you as well as a story of a time when I was WAY OUT OF MY ELEMENT - in a first class way! 1 - Passion reveals energy - If you’re doing something that you love, by the end of the day you may be physically tired but spiritually energized. 2- Mindfulness is key - Mindfulness doesn’t remove the ups and downs of life, it changes how experiences influence you and how you influence the experience…it changes your relationship with the world. 3- Find The Meaning of Happiness - Research suggests that 40% of what affects your actual levels of happiness is what you chose to do and how you choose to think and feel: in other words, your own behavior. 4- Recognize The Myth of Barriers - Way too often we set ourselves limitations in our own heads and restrict ourselves from living great lives. 5 - Find your tribe - Tribes that work together can achieve more than individuals acting alone because they stimulate each other’s creativity and sense of possibility. 6 - Living your own life- Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones that you did do. Finding your own Element won’t guarantee that you’ll spend the rest of your life in a constant, unbroken state of pleasure and delight. It will give you a deeper sense of who you really are and of the life you could and maybe should live. Find your way back to your element when you feel that you are out of it - someone has handed you the ticket, take your seat and enjoy the flight! Ep 30E30 - Happy Thanksgiving - The Difference Between Being Grateful verses Being Thankful
EPISODE 30 - Happy Thanksgiving - The Difference Between Being Grateful verses Being Thankful Therefore, feeling grateful and thankful are both positive emotions that are sparked by an event. However, the difference between feeling grateful and thankful is that, by definition, grateful feelings are directed toward the person experiencing them, whereas thankful feelings are generated within the individual. Let me elaborate: If you're like me, you probably use the terms "grateful" and "grateful" interchangeably, but in reality, they are not the same thing. There is a difference, and understanding this difference can help you communicate more effectively, particularly with yourself. This is important because it will affect how you feel, which will ultimately determine how successful and content you are. When someone asks you where you are grateful for in your life, they are really asking you what you appreciate about external circumstances. This indicates that the outside world is the only source of gratitude. Therefore, you cannot generate this feeling on your own if you want to be grateful. You need something outside of yourself to do so. Examples of how grateful can be used: I greatly appreciate your assistance. Do you see that being grateful always requires assistance? A feeling of gratitude can be developed on your own. Even if the external circumstances remain the same, the feeling is different. Peter, for instance, helped me by fixing my car. Now, let's use two sentences to compare gratefulness to thankfulness: Sentence of gratitude: I'm thankful for your assistance, Peter. Positive sentence: I am grateful that Peter assisted me. You express your gratitude to Peter in the first sentence. You also state that you would not have been content without Peter at the same time. Thus, underneath this feeling of gratitude is a sense of helplessness. However, by using the second sentence, you make yourself feel grateful. You could say this sentence even if Peter wasn't there, just thinking back on the time Peter helped you. Therefore, the expression of gratitude is not directed toward Peter but rather toward an experience you have had. However, what if Peter had not assisted you? But instead, your vehicle was fixed by someone else? Or perhaps your vehicle has not yet been fixed. Even at that point, you might express gratitude by, for instance, saying, Given that I can walk to my office, I am grateful that my car has not yet been fixed. Therefore, the difference between being thankful and being grateful is that being thankful allows you to experience happiness and gratitude on your own without relying on others. As our US Neighbours celebrate Thanksgiving this week, I just wanted to make you aware of the difference between GRATEFUL and THANKFUL - enjoy time with your friends, family and community! Cheers! Ep 29E29 - 4 Tips On Disciplining Your Kids Effectively that Makes Them Better
EPISODE 29 - 4 Tips On Disciplining Your Kids Effectively that Makes Them Better Grab your coaches whistle! Hit the field, let's talk about building our team within our home - so that we are all playing together, towards the same goal and serving the team with our efforts - how to discipline without driving your kids away in the process Four Benefits of Disciplining Your Children Every child requires discipline to grow into a responsible adult. However, many parents often find it challenging to foster discipline in their children. Debates rage as to how you should teach your child, but what is clear is that your child should grow up in a way that serves them as adults. Here is why you should be disciplining children. (1) To have and understand their boundaries Our home is our team, and in our home we should have "The Home Team Advantage". Our kids have young and fresh minds, and as a parent, it is our job to help shape and guide how our kids act and react to life. One thing you should do is to teach them to understand the boundaries of the team (your home). Disciplining them when they mess up teaches them to understand their limits and how much they can stretch them. Sports has rules - it would be chaos without written, defined rules that shape game play - we aren't making things up as we go - break a rule in sport and there is a penalty - same for our home! (2) To foster independence - Disciplining children helps them to master the art of being independent. When they learn that unpalatable consequences await them if they stray, they grow to get to think and make decisions independently. It is important because you don't expect your kids to remain kids forever but to mature as the years pass. As they grow, they will find it easy to be on their own and only nominally require your help. As their coach, give them the tools they need to think for themselves, to try, to fail and to learn - the independence to become a better team player! (3) To teach responsibility - Many parenting tips mention teaching responsibility as a key pillar to discipline. Our actions and reactions define us! Help your kids see the correlation between their decisions and the outcome of their choices. Like a coach, let them develop their responsibility muscles by doing things for the team and around the house that helps them demonstrate their own responsibility. They need to see how a good home team is run, and where they fit into the mix! As a coach, help them to envision how their commitment to the team is demonstrated in their responsibility to each other. (4) To establish self-discipline - One reason for disciplining children is to foster self-discipline. There is only so much you can do, and remember, you can't be with your children all the time. They’ve got to go to school, and you have your duties to perform. The greatest gift you can give your kids is the ability to understand the rules, anticipate game play, adjust to changes in life and think for themselves. Remember, coaches - coach. They don't play the game. ___ Check out our Dad Space Community on Facebook Visit DadSpace.ca for everything Dad! Have a podcast and need a great website? EPISODE 28 - Hey Dad - Five Questions About Being a Father Questions About Being a Father Below are some questions to ask your father or yourself about being a father: Are there things you wish you had done differently as a father? Questions along these lines will help dad think more about the quality of his role as a father and may identify some things that could influence your role as a parent. Do you think today's fathers have things harder or easier than you had them? This is a great question to help dad reflect on the changes that have occurred since he became a father. You might get a good sense of his view of technology, entertainment, faith, work, etc. with a question like this. What do you enjoy most about being a father? This question will help dad remember some of the better moments of his life as a dad and will help you see what he liked about his role. A good follow-up question might involve the things he least liked about being a father. What traditions did your father pass on to you that you passed on to your children? Sometimes, we can't quite figure out where something Dad taught us came from. Questions like this will help you get some insight into his personal history and how traditions shaped his own approach to being a father. What was one of the hardest moments you had being a father and why was it hard? Sometimes it is tough to be a dad, and the times when it was toughest can give you some great insight into why your dad had the parenting style he did. Ep 27E27 - How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Find Contentment in Your Dad Journey
EPISODE 27 - How To Get Out of Your Own Way and Find Contentment in Your Dad Journey As a Dad we tend to operate in a provider mode - putting others first, making sure everyone around us is good - but what about us, what if we are not... good. What happens when we "get in the way" of others, we push others hard, maybe too hard. How do we become more mindful of others in our day to day and become aware of moments when putting someone ahead of us and stepping aside can change the course of someone's day - or even their life?! I had one of those days yesterday, I didn't have time to jump into a room I frequent every week, a room on Clubhouse - the social audio app where you can connect with others and speak on hosted "stages" in topics that interest you as a participant. I was busy, I had lots going on that day - no time for Clubhouse - but there was this voice - "You need to be there, you will miss this opportunity, go there now" - but I don't have time, "Go there now" - but the room is almost over, it's too late to jump in on the conversation... "Go there now!" So I did. I joined the room as it was closing, unaware of the topic of the day, I missed all the great speakers, I was as lost as a grade nine student on the first day of classes! I am a moderator in this group so I couldn't just sit in the audience and soak it on in, I was placed right up on stage as I entered the room - The time came around for me to speak, the room is closing, one last go around - what is inspiring you today, share your thoughts and plug your business to the room was the instructions - I come off mute and before I could collect my thoughts I realized why I was there - down below in the audience is one of the people I admire - for their encouragement of others, selflessness and caring - but she wasn't on stage with us like normal, she was just listening - and in that moment of promote yourself - I focused on her, why she matters, to me, in my journey and how much I valued her. With no thought of the result, no consideration really as to if my words mattered in that moment or if they were going to be received, I shared my praise for her instead of me and my thing - I got out of the way. The results were fantastic. I have been mulling this over and sharing this thought with others as we cross paths, they tend to write this down as I shared it with them - so here is my thought for this week, and for you - "If you can't find contentment in the journey, it won't be there to greet you when you arrive" We get in the way by putting ourselves first, even if we are trying to make others around us better - we put great stock in the result, that is where and when we will be content - when I reach this goal, cross that line, hit that target - THEN, and only then will I be content. What about the journey, can we try to find contentment in the unfinished and messy day to day struggle? By finding contentment in the journey we will most definitely discover contentment when we reach the goal for which we strive! Get out of your own way, today! ___ Check out our Dad Space Community on Facebook Visit DadSpace.ca for everything Dad! Have a podcast and need a great website? Ep 24E24 - Phil Vecchio - Stay at home Dad - and yes, these are my kids, and no I am not babysitting!
EPISODE 24 - Phil Vecchio - Stay at home Dad - and yes, these are my kids, and no I am not babysitting! Phil Vecchio joins us to chat about being a stay at home Dad - and yes, these are my kids, and no I am not babysitting! Phil made the decision early on as a parent that he would stay home and raise the kids! Not work from home, stay at home! Sure there is time to pursue the things that light Phil up - he is a podcaster, loves music and so much more, but he is a stay at home Dad! With the high cost of Day Care and the thought of someone else raising his kids this family decided that Phil being home would work best! And it has! It seems odd when strangers assume or comment that we as Dads are "watching our kids" or "babysitting" "Where is their Mom?" As Dads we don't watch our kids - they are our kids and we can find our place, like Phil! Be encouraged Dads! Ep 21E21 - Mike Hynes - Post Traumatic Growth, Mental Health for Dads and Mike's Dad Story
EPISODE 21 - Mike Hynes - Post Traumatic Growth, Mental Health for Dads and Mike's Dad Story Mike is an executive coach, a speaker and an author of the book: The Myth-Guided Mind: Unleash Your God-Given Genius at Work and at Home. His book is both practical and personal. He worked as a psychotherapist and saw that there were flaws in the system. He came to believe that there was a problem about the way “the system” thinks about mental illness and mental health. Now he works as a coach to help people look forward to create the life they want to live and unleash their inner genius. The Book: The Myth-Guided Mind: Unleash Your God-Given Genius at Work and at Home - In The Myth-Guided Mind, Michael Hynes delivers a powerful proposition: we are not nearly so broken as the devices we use to make us well. With a success rate of around 20 per cent, conventional therapy tactics turn us towards false answers and away from what we need most. Hynes argues that healing techniques such as somatics, coupled with a reconnection to allegories that hide the keys to our happiness in plain sight, will lead us home. We need to access the same old stories to stop repeating our same old stories. https://michaelhynes.ca/ ___ Check out our Dad Space Community on Facebook Visit DadSpace.ca for everything Dad! Michael is a wedding and event DJ! We talk music, new Dad stuff and more in this episode! From as far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a musician. Since I could walk and talk, I would stroll around the house singing made up songs for the entertainment of my family, or just for myself. That passion for music and entertainment only grew throughout the years into adulthood. Now I consider myself a student of several music styles and love searching for ways to expand my music taste. My name is Michael Eback, and I’ve been writing and producing music for at least a decade now. My musical journey has also guided me to pursue several other artistic avenues throughout the years. My love for entertainment lead to me working at West Acres Movie Theater in Fargo, where I met my best friend! She and I got married in 2019.
