How Dads Can Harness The Force | The Show
There are basically three ways to learn how to be a good person. We learn by doing and making mistakes, we learn by observing what other people do, and we learn from the stories in our culture. Popular stories play an outsized role in our understanding of virtue and morality, and few stories can match the awesome power of Star Wars.Today’s guest, Stephen Kent, has figured out how to use one of the most iconic and influential American stories as a common language to teach moral lessons to children. In his book, How the Force Can Fix the World, Stephen takes a deep dive into the virtues of Star Wars, and how they can be an antidote to our modern problems. From the fearlessness of the Jedi, to the hope instilled by the Rebel Alliance, and the redemption sometimes found by the Sith, he lays out an epic set of virtues worth learning from a galaxy far, far away.We worked with Stephen to create a great viewing guide so that you and your young Padawan can put his work into practice while watching your favorite Star Wars scenes. This episode is in no way affiliated with or endorsed by the Star Wars franchise or Disney._____________________________________Download the Star Wars Viewing Guide: https://action.dadsavesamerica.com/may-the-4thPurchase a copy of How the Force Can Fix the World: https://www.amazon.com/How-Force-Can-Fix-World/dp/1546000461Visit Stephen's website: https://www.stephendkent.com/Follow Stephen on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Stephen_Kent89?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor_____________________________________Outline:[0:00] Intro[2:14] Growing up as a Star Wars prequel fan[4:56] Why write a book about Star Wars?[9:12] Stephen journey as a dad[11:22] Empathy, masks, and redemption[25:13] How Stephen and his dad supported each other[31:02] Fear, control, and hubris[44:10] Hope, freedom, and boundaries[55:11] Anyone can fall to the dark side[1:00:46] Shared stories are a societal foundation[1:04:41] Outro_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/id4byFG2dlMMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. SXSW 2023: Daddy Issues In Film With Troy Kotsur And Emma Westenberg | Special Event
Why are fathers and father-figures so important in film? What can we learn about ourselves as film-makers and film fans from the way we utilize the notion of father as a driving character within these stories we tell on the screen? How should we think about storytelling and what compels us to focus on our relationships with fathers to articulate complex human dynamics?Oscar winning actor Troy Kotsur and director Emma Westenberg joined Dad Saves America host John Papola for a conversation about the portrayal of fatherhood in film at SXSW 2023. They explored what responsibility filmmakers have to challenge common stereotypes about dads throughout pop culture, the impact of their own dads on how they see the issue, and Emergent Order Foundation's upcoming short documentary about Troy's relationship with his dad._____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/f-_yfcWwcs4Make a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. These Guys Made YouTube’s First Viral Rap Battle | The Show
What do hip hop and economics have in common? Well, until host John Papola and Russ Roberts met following the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, there was very little overlap between those two topics.John learned of Russ after listening to his popular podcast, EconTalk, which sent John down the economics rabbit-hole. This led to an unlikely collaboration between John, a filmmaker, and Russ, economist. In 2010, “Fear the Boom and Bust: Keynes vs. Hayek” debuted on YouTube and became an internet sensation, practically overnight. It was the first viral rap battle of its kind, predating the popular “Epic Rap Battles Of History” by over 8 months. This project ended up changing the course of John’s career, eventually leading to Dad Saves America. In this episode of Dad Saves America, these two friends discuss their shared passions of economics, storytelling, Adam Smith, and emergent order. There Are No Solutions In The Real World, Only Tradeoffs | The Show
Should we “trust the science”? What does that even mean?Dr. Carlos Carvalho is a professor of statistics and the Executive Director of the Salem Center for Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s an expert in analyzing data and understanding the tradeoffs of competing policies.Dr. Carvalho doesn’t believe we should “trust the science” because science is not capable of leading people. The scientific method is a process of gathering information about the world, but in the end, decision making lies with each of us, according to our values. That said, Dr. Carvalho knows how important data is to the decision making process. In fact, one of the biggest problems today is that, whether the issue is poverty, climate change, or infectious disease, most people don’t have an accurate dataset on which to base their decisions. He Couldn’t Beat His Dad In Arm Wrestling Until His Mid-20s | Pop Wisdom
Brian Gitt has some wisdom to share. The example his dad set helped Gitt develop the entrepreneurial and adventurous spirit he has today, and a few experiments with fireworks taught him a lesson or two about risk-taking along the way. A little mischief can be good for kids, but Gitt recalls how he and his friends “could’ve burned down the whole neighborhood” on a few occasions.Gitt has spent his whole career as an entrepreneur in the energy sector and cares deeply about protecting the environment. He also believes that our energy production has to serve the needs of people, not ideologies, and so he rejects the quasi-religious notion that fossil fuels can simply be replaced with solar, wind, or any other of the highly inefficient forms of renewable energy currently on the table.Subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss a single episode, and feel free to leave a rating or review!_____________________________________Brian's blog: https://briangitt.com/Brian's Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrianGitt?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^authorBrian's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-gitt_____________________________________Watch the video version on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Omx-6BX_bvQMake a tax-deductible donation to Dad Saves America: https://secure.anedot.com/emergent-order-foundation/dad-website?Visit our website: https://www.dadsavesamerica.com/_____________________________________Dad Saves America is a channel dedicated to celebrating heroic fatherhood while teaching the next generation of fathers strategies they can utilize in parenting their children. Dreaming Of A Solar-Powered Future? Don't Hold Your Breath. | The Show
Brian Gitt’s conversion from mainstream environmentalism was an accident. For decades, he believed that solar and wind power were the future, and that it was only a matter of time before fossil fuels were a thing of the past. If our population keeps growing, won’t we eventually run out of resources?According to Marian Tupy, the answer is no. Tupy is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute who recently co-authored Superabundance, a book exploring this very question. More people means more mouths to feed, but it also means more minds working together to develop the technology of the future.
