16-year-old Jamie Grissim disappeared from Vancouver, Washington on December 7, 1971. She has never been heard from or seen since. Jamie is thought to be the first victim of suspected serial killer Warren Leslie Forrest. In 1974, 19-year-old newlywed Arlis Perry was murdered inside the Memorial Church on the campus of Stanford University. Her murder was brutal and savage which led many to think it was connected to a satanic cult. Investigators worked the case but couldn't connect anyone to the murder. It took 44 years, and some amazing advances in DNA technology, to put together the pieces of this 44-year-old murder case. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the murder of Arlis Perry. In this episode, we're covering three separate murder cases that occurred while the victims were at rest stops. Dexter Stefonek was traveling back home to Wisconsin after visiting family in Oregon. His vehicle was found burning at a rest stop in Montana. A couple later found his body at a trash site. Jane Snow was traveling with her two young sons in 1979 when her body was discovered by her sons inside the women's restroom at a rest stop. There have been several suspects in Jane's murder but no one has yet been brought to justice. Gordon and Jackie McAllister were traveling through Canada in their RV when an assailant barged in and shot Jackie to death. Gordon escaped and was able to describe the attacker. In 1978, Rhonda Wicht and her 4-year-old son Donnie were killed inside their Simi Valley, California apartment. Rhonda's on-again/off-again boyfriend Craig Coley was arrested and convicted of the murders. He spent 39 years behind bars before DNA evidence set him free. In 2007, the affluent area of Boca Raton, Florida, experienced a number of attacks and murders that occurred at the local mall. The crimes shared eerie similarities. The perpetrator or perpetrators targeted women who drove dark expensive SUVs. The victims were bound and made to wear goggles or sunglasses that were blacked out so that they could not see. In some cases, the victims were made to drive to ATMs to withdraw money. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss these baffling Boca Raton mall attacks and murders. These remain unsolved to this day, but a surviving victim has been able to provide a composite sketch. In the spring of 1992, a string of murders occurred in the Midwest. All of these murders occurred inside small businesses located near Interstate 70. All were shootings and the killer left no evidence behind. The killer targeted women alone in smaller types of stores but one man was killed during the series. In this Halloween week episode of Criminology, we're discussing two horrific and infamous ax murder cases. In 1912, in Villisca Iowa, eight people were murdered in the Moore family farmhouse. All six members of the Moore family were killed along with sisters Lena and Ina Stillinger who were staying the night. In 1922, at the Hinterkaifeck farm in Bavaria, Germany, 5 members of the Gruber family and their maid were brutally murdered. These are two very infamous unsolved cases of massacres carried out with some type of ax. And even though the two incidents occurred years apart, and far away from each, there are many similarities between the two cases. Some have theorized that they were both carried out by the same person or persons. The other thing that ties these two cases together is that they both involve a little bit of the supernatural. 18-year-old Christine Rothschild was an intelligent and beautiful student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Her lifeless body was found on May 26th, 1968, outside of Sterling Hall at the college. Police could not develop any leads or suspects regarding Christine's murder. But many believe that she was killed by a middle-aged medical resident who was obsessed with Christine. He had asked her out and began harassing and stalking her after she turned down his advances. On Christmas Eve, 1975, four people were murdered in Winter Garden Florida inside the Zeigler furniture store. Tommy Zeigler, who by that time, was the president of Zeiglers was arrested, tried, and convicted of the murders. The victims that night included Tommy's wife Eunice, Eunice's father and mother, and a family friend named Charlie Mays. Many individuals had something to say about the events that transpired that night. And, as often happens, there were many different variations regarding what transpired. 17-year-old Brianna Maitland disappeared from a small town in Vermont on March 19, 2004, Brianna vanished after leaving her job at the Black Lantern Inn. Tom Steeples was a Nashville man who was in the computer business. Tom's life took a dark turn as his addictions worsened. Tom drank, took cocaine, and racked up sizable gambling debts. He allegedly murdered a bar owner that he owed money to in 1993. The police believe he murdered a newlywed couple in 1994. Tom would never stand trial for any of these murders. On June 27, 2000, Molly Bish disappeared from her lifeguard post at Comins Pond in Warren, Massachusetts. Molly's mother Magi dropped her off at work that day and was the last known person to see her alive. When people began showing up to swim that day, they found no lifeguard on duty. Molly's disappearance turned into one of the biggest and most expensive searches in the history of Massachusetts. Molly's body was ultimately found on June 9, 2003, almost 3 years after her disappearance, in a field only about 5 miles from her home. He was obsessed with John Lennon of the Beatles and felt that killing Lennon would make him famous. Chapman displayed many signs of mental illness in the months leading up to the murder. In 2004, Jason Allen and Lindsay Cutshall were a free-spirited couple who had their whole lives ahead of them. They had so much in common. They came from very religious families and their religion played a huge part in their lives. They had both graduated from a bible college which is where they met. They loved life and were extremely adventurous, choosing to hike, camp, and go white water rafting. Jason and Lindsay were set to marry but they were murdered before it took place. They were on one of their adventures up the coast of California when their bodies were found near Jennifer, Ca on a stretch known as fish head beach. There were suspects but their murders remained a mystery until 2017 when police held a press conference to announce they had arrested a suspect in the murders. Between 1978 and 1983, four teenage girls disappeared from Pocatello, Idaho. All four were later found deceased. There were similarities between the victims aside from their ages and gender. They all attended the same school. All went missing during the summer months, and three of the girls were either babysitting or due to babysitting at the time they disappeared. Was this the work of a serial killer or random acts of violence? Three girls disappeared, each in a different year, in different states, and under different circumstances. Deborah Ann Quimby vanished in 1977, Colleen Orsborn in 1984, and Alicia Markovich in 1987. There was nothing to connect the disappearances of the 3 girls. That was until an apparent connection was seen in an anonymous letter writer. In each case, someone had written at least one letter related to the disappearance of the girls. Some of the letters were sent to family members and some were sent to the police. But it appeared as though all of the letters were written by the same person. Some of the letters contained very graphic descriptions of what happened to the girls. This case remains a mystery but the details need to be heard. There is someone out there that may know what happened to these 3 girls. In 1985, 81-year-old Ed Maurin and his wife 83-year-old Minnie Maurin were shot to death in Washington State. Their murders shocked and saddened the small community where they lived. Residents were asking themselves who would want to kill this friendly and well-liked couple. The police began to investigate the murders but couldn't put anything concrete together. For almost 27 years, the murders of the Maurins went unsolved. But, in 2012, police got the break they needed to finally solve this haunting and baffling case. In 1980, Roger Atkison and Rose Burkert were brutally murdered inside an Amana Holiday Inn room in Williamsburg, Iowa. As the details emerged, police realized that Roger and Rose were hundreds of miles from their homes. Not only that but Roger was married and the meeting between Roger and Rose was a romantic tryst. This was a bizarre and baffling case from the very start and remains the same to this day. Police originally thought, based on the hotel room crime scene, that this was a crime of passion. n the summer of 1964, three civil rights workers went missing in Mississippi. They were in the state working to help African Americans get registered to vote. Their station wagon was found burned and then their bodies were found after a 44-day search. The murders sparked a national outcry for justice and led to the first successful federal prosecution in a Mississippi civil rights case. There was a tremendous amount of media coverage on this case. The individuals responsible included members of the KKK as well as local law enforcement. But it wouldn't be easy to get convictions on all involved, and the fight for justice would take many years. 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Libby German went missing on February 13, 2017. The two friends were out hiking and their families became worried when they didn't show to be picked up. After an extensive search, their bodies were found the very next day. Police recovered evidence from Libby's cell phone and released an image and small snippet of audio that they believe to be the suspect. On October 15, 2018, in Barron Wisconsin, the unthinkable happened. An armed intruder entered the home of James and Denise Closs. He murdered James and Denise and kidnapped their daughter, 13-year-old Jayme. The story made headlines around the world. Police led an all-out search for Jayme and the person that abducted her and killed her parents. But, they came up empty. On January 10, 2019, Jayme escaped from her captor, a man she identified as 21-year-old Jake Patterson. Police caught Patterson quickly and he told them the details of what happened in the proceeding three months, beginning with the murder of James and Denise.
