In 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home near Salt Lake City, Utah. Elizabeth's younger sister was in the same room when a man came and took Elizabeth. Her captors kept her up in the mountains for much of the time she was held. All the while, her case received a lot of media attention and many people were searching for her. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the infamous abduction of Elizabeth Smart. She experienced unspeakable acts during the nine-month period of time that she was held. During that time, a number of police officers encountered Elizabeth and her captors Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. But, Elizabeth was kept covered and was so fearful of her captors that she was unable to ask for help. After she was finally rescued, Elizabeth's inner strength was on full display as she stared down her abductor in court and detailed what he had done to her. In 1986, 19-year-old Keith Warren was found hanging from a tree in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the police quickly ruled it a suicide. Keith's family didn't believe that he had taken his own life. They found the actions of the police suspicious. This included sending Keith's body to a funeral home and having him embalmed without giving the family any type of notice. The police initially theorized that Dub killed Latricia and then abducted his son Chance to keep him away from his mother. They went as far as to put out an arrest warrant for Dub. In 1979, 16-year-old Kim Bryant was abducted and murdered on her way home from school in Las Vegas, Nevada. She called her boyfriend to come to pick her up, but when he arrived Kim was gone. Several factors delayed the search for Kim. Someone found her backpack but didn't know she was missing. Her boyfriend didn't come forward for days. The police believed she was a runaway. They also had a lot on their plate as Las Vegas was experiencing a high number of unsolved murders. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the abduction and murder of Kim Bryant. The police had very few clues in Kim's case even after it was discovered that her backpack had been found. There were some eyewitnesses who saw some men in a vehicle talking to Kim. Years later, killer Ronnie Lee Fain became a suspect after he murdered Bobby Gene Thomas, who he said confessed to him that he murdered Kim. Monique Figueroa's 2015 disappearance is shrouded in mystery. Her family has said that she battled drug addiction but was set to go to rehab. It also came out that Monique sold methamphetamine as well as using the drug. This put her in contact with some very dangerous people. Larry Sarvey, the general manager of the Atchison Daily Globe newspaper was murdered in 1989. Larry was shot in the head twice with a 12-gauge shotgun inside his Kansas home. But, police had very little to go on besides some screens on the home that had been cut in an apparent effort to gain entry. There was no sign of a struggle inside the house. What emerged was a love triangle/square of sorts. Sandi was pregnant with Larry's child, and Sandi's ex-husband Lloyd was eventually linked to Larry's ex-wife. It didn't take police long to arrest Lloyd Heaver for the murder of Larry Sarvey. At Lloyd's trial, a possible hitman emerged but it wasn't Lloyd. In 2014, the Broaddus family encountered a nightmare after buying what they thought was their dream home in Westfield New Jersey. It was a home that they never even moved into. Shortly after buying the home, a mysterious letter appeared in the mailbox. Its tone was extremely ominous and it was signed by someone calling themselves The Watcher. The family decided not to move in after a few of the letters mentioned their children in a threatening way. But while Joseph DeAngelo's reign of terror was winding down in the mid-1980's, another killer in the Los Angeles area was just getting started. He too would be given the name 'The Night Stalker.' In 2010, Joseph and Summer McStay and their two young children vanished in California. The police had trouble figuring out exactly what happened to the family of four. Over the years, many theories were floated including that a grainy video showed the family fleeing to Mexico. Many theories revolved around Summer having something to do with Joseph's murder and then taking off with the children. But, when the bodies of the family were found years later, those theories were dispelled. In the end, the police pieced together that one of Joseph's business associates was involved. But, the police had an uphill battle. The McStay home had been cleaned up by family members. But, she has told differing stories to different outlets leading many, including Karlie's mother, Lindsay, to suspect that there is more to the story. Three different eyewitnesses claim to have seen Karlie walking near a highway clutching a piece of paper in her hand on the morning she disappeared. Ep 171The Las Cruces Bowling Alley Massacre
On February 10th, 1990, two men entered the Las Cruces Bowl, a family-run bowling alley, and held everyone inside the building at gunpoint. The two men stole some cash, shot all seven people inside the building, including young children, and then set the place on fire. 12-year-old Melissa Repass was able to call 911, even though she had been shot multiple times, and give the authorities vital information. Her courage was amazing in the face of the pain and fear she must have been experiencing during that time. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the tragic case of the Las Cruces bowling alley massacre. It's a tragic and horrifying case. The two perpetrators most likely hid potential evidence when they set the bowling alley on fire. People have had trouble developing a motive and the case has been unsolved for over 30 years. Motive is tough in this case because the killers didn't empty the safe of all of the money inside. Were they looking for something else or using robbery to mislead police as to the true reason for the murders? On July 3, 2014, 15-year-old Megan Nichols disappeared from her Fairfield, Illinois home. Megan was dating an 18-year-old named Brodey Murbarger, and the relationship had caused a rift between Megan and her mother. There were a few cryptic clues left behind at the home, one was Megan's cell phone which had been completely wiped. Another was a note that Megan had written that contained very strange word choices and phrasing. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the disappearance and murder of Megan Nichols. Megan's body was more than four years after she disappeared. After she was discovered, the police quickly zeroed in on her boyfriend Brodey Murbarger, who, by that time, had moved on with his life. Brody has been arrested and charged with Megan's murder, but his case has taken quite some time to get through the courts. This is a case that we'll have to watch closely to see what comes out at trial and whether a jury finds Brodey guilty or not. Ep 168The Lake Bodom Murders
In 1960, three young people, Maila Bjorklund, Anja Tuulikki Maki, and Seppo Boisman were murdered in Finland while they were camping. A fourth person, Nils Gustafsson, who was with the group was injured but survived, and later became a suspect. This is one of Finland's most infamous unsolved murder cases. It rocked the country at the time it occurred and some people are still wary, to this day, about camping because of the stories that have been told over the years. Join Mike and Morf as they cover this infamous unsolved murder case out of Finland. A blond man was seen by a number of eyewitnesses walking away from the campsite. Some eyewitnesses were put under hypnosis. The police centered their suspicion on the lone survivor Nils Gustaffson. They took him to trial but he was ultimately acquitted. But Nils was not the only person around Lake Bodom to garner suspicion over the years. There were a number of people who have been linked as possible suspects to these horrific murders. In 1973 two teachers were murdered, one in New York City, and the other in Indiana. While both murders were extremely brutal, they were covered very differently. A Catholic school teacher named Roseann Quinn was murdered in New York City. Her murder became the basis for the book, "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" and later a movie by the same name. 26-year-old Ann Kline was a mathematics professor who was murdered in Evansville, Indiana. But, the way she was portrayed, a Catholic school teacher by day and a bar-hopper by night, angered many. Ann's murder received much less coverage which, in some part, may have been because it occurred in Indiana rather than New York City. On August 30th, 2019, the body of Autumn Lee Stone was found in Green Lake in Seattle, Washington. She was found by a man paddleboarding who thought at first that she was a turtle in the water. When the police pulled Autumn's body out of the water, they found her shoelaces tied together around her neck. Within just an hour of Autumn's body being found police said there was no foul play and told journalists that Autumn had taken her own life. Manuel Gehring was a man who was not happy with his life. He had a hard time holding down a job. He wasn't happy that his marriage to his wife Teri had ended and that she had found and married another man. Manuel was also not happy with the custody and child support arrangement that he had with his wife. He wasn't happy that in June 2003, Father's Day fell on Teri's weekend with the kids. And, when Sarah and Philip disappeared over the Fourth of July holiday, Teri and the police feared the worst. Unfortunately, they were correct; Manuel Gehring had done the unthinkable. When police finally found him after a cross-country trip, Manuel confessed to the murders. But, he could not remember or would not tell the police where he buried the bodies of his children. A woman in Ohio worked diligently as an amateur detective, and along with her dog Rico, she helped find Sarah's and Philip's bodies and return them to their mother. In 1958, 10-year-old Bobby Bizup went missing while at a Catholic summer camp in Boulder County, Colorado. It was assumed he had wandered off and searchers would find him quickly, but, that didn't happen. Parts of Bobby's remains were later found as were bits of his clothing. Some were found 3 miles up Mount Meeker. Bobby's skull was never found. Investigators determined that Bobby most likely died of exposure to the elements. But, there were conflicting reports about Bobby's activities leading up to his disappearance. There were also some strange sightings of Bobby reported in locations as far as 15 miles away from the camp. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the mysterious disappearance and death of Bobby Bizup. There have been revelations that have come out over the years that allege some of the men working at the camp at the time of Bobby's disappearance had molested campers. This had led to speculation that Bobby was either running away from something or someone and that he was perhaps killed because of something he saw. This case has heated up over the past year as a skull that may prove to be Bobby's was brought forth and given to police. DNA testing may soon reveal whether it is Bobby's skull or not. The town of Speedway, Indiana is known for racing with the Indianapolis Speedway being a huge attraction. But, in 1978, Speedway gained attention for a number of high-profile crimes. In September of that year, a serial bomber terrorized the area by detonating eight separate bombs. A month after the bombings, the murder of four young Burger Chef employees rocked the area. Known as the Burger Chef murders, Jayne Friedt, Daniel Davis, Mark Flemmonds, and Ruth Shelton were murder as they were closing up the restaurant. Christy Crystal Creek was the name given to an unidentified female murder victim found near the town of Bonner in Missoula County, Missouri in 1985. She was named after the road near where she was found. Investigators had very little to work with in trying to identify her and went down a lot of avenues that turned out to be incorrect. It took investigators 36 years, and the help of advancements in DNA, to make the announcement that Christy Crystal Creek was actually Janet Lee Lucas. All efforts then switched to trying to identify Janet's murderer. Police had no idea why Janet was in Montana or even how she got there. But, one name kept popping up in the investigation, suspected serial killer Wayne Nance. Serial killer Richard Cottingham earned the moniker of "The Torso Killer" for his crimes. To the outside world, Richard seemed like a professional and a family man. Baby Hope was the name given to a four-year-old little girl found dead in a cooler near the Henry Hudson Parkway. Baby Hope's body was found by construction workers in Manhattan, New York, in 1991. In 2019, Canadian teenagers Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod embarked on a deadly crime spree. They told their families that they were headed to the Yukon territory to look for work. But, after stopping to buy a semi-automatic rifle, they started their killing spree. Their victims were selected at random and included a young couple whose van broke down on a road trip to Alaska and a botany professor and husband in his sixties. But, as more information surfaced, it became clear that they were the killers and one of the largest manhunts in Canadian history began. Ep 155The Dardeen Family Murders
In 1987, the small town of Ina, Illinois was rocked by the senseless and brutal murders of the Dardeen family. When 29-year-old Keith Dardeen failed to show up for work, his parents called the police. The police made a shocking discovery at the Dardeen home. Keith's wife Elaine, who was seven months pregnant, and their 3-year-old son Peter were found bludgeoned to death. Elaine delivered a baby girl during the attack and police found the infant deceased as well. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss this infamous case out of the Midwest. In Nevada, Interstate 80 runs through stretches of desert. The desert can be a very unforgiving place with temperature swings and dangers that await those who venture through it. There have been a large number of unexplained disappearances and deaths along a certain stretch of I-80. Pumpernickel Valley's Exit 205 is extremely interesting because it leads to nowhere. In 1976, residents of Circleville, Ohio began receiving obscene and threatening letters that contained details and rumors regarding some of the residents in town. For residents of Circleville, it wasn't a serial killer that shattered their sense of safety and neighborly closeness. It was a serial writer - a writer who by the time he or she was done, had sent over 1000 letters targeting many of Circleville's residents, but seemingly targeting one resident more than the rest. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the mysterious and fascinating case of the Circleville writer. One man, Paul Freshour, was convicted of attempted murder and sent off to prison. It was thought that he was the Circleville writer, and handwriting analysis of some of the letters seemed to back that up. But, people continued receiving letters after Paul went to prison, something that the warden insists was impossible. Who was the original writer of the letters and just how many writers were there. One man died under mysterious circumstances. And, a woman who seemingly was the focus of early letters was seen as a target. EIn 2018, an unidentified hiker, which many began called Mostly Harmless, was found in Florida and what followed was a search for his identity. It was discovered that the hiker had been traveling the Appalachian Trail. People began to come forward with information about their encounters with Mostly Harmless after the story took hold on social media and people around the world started working on the mystery. In 1982, 29-year-old Barbara Jo Oberholtzer and 21-year-old Annette Kay Schnee were both last seen in the town of Breckinridge, Colorado. Both were found murdered and their cases were linked by a pair of orange socks. A matching orange sock was found on or near each of the murdered women's bodies. Between 2005 and 2009, 8 women were found murdered in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana. There were eight women from Jennings, Louisiana who were murdered in those four years and they are referred to collectively as "The Jennings 8" or "The Jeff Davis 8." 14 agencies from the federal level down to the local level worked together to hunt a serial killer operating in Jefferson Davis Parish. On Valentine's day, Feb 14, 2000, 9-year-old Asha Degree vanished. The circumstances around her disappearance are extremely mysterious. It seemed as though this little girl walked away from her North Carolina home in the dark in the early morning hours, never to come home. Ep 141The Murder of Jessica Chambers
On Dec. 6, 2014, in Courland, MS, a horrible murder occurred. First responders were called out to a scene that they thought was just a car fire. But, then they found 19-year-old Jessica Chambers who had severe burns on over 90% of her body. Emergency personnel tried to get information from Jessica on what happened to her but she could barely speak and she died later at the hospital. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the tragic murder of Jessica Chambers. Investigators struggled to piece together what happened to Jessica and who was involved. A lot of rumors swirled around Courtland and the surrounding towns. Police centered their attention on a man named Quinton Tellis, who was with Jessica that day. They have tried him twice, but, both juries failed to reach a verdict. Tellis has also been charged with the murder of Mandy Hsiao in Louisiana. That trial has yet to occur and it remains to be seen whether Mississippi will try him a third time.
