Ep 174174: Why I'm Using Questions Rather Than Goals for 2023
In 2023, I'm focusing on questions. This idea came from a variety of sources I've been diving into lately. It was discussed in a book I was recently reintroduced to called A More Beautiful Question and in a course I recently took. In another book I read, The Highest Goal by Michael Ray, he talked about not focusing so much on goals but on questions. Ray calls these questions "live withs." I've been drawn to this idea of using questions rather than goals because too many of us tend to race to one answer or the other. Doing that just narrows our field of vision. I don't think our goal should be to see how many answers we can find but, rather, to ask good questions. In this episode, I'm diving more into this topic and sharing some of the questions I'm asking myself in 2023 both regarding my personal and business life. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: More on why I'm asking questions rather than setting goals for 2023. My personal questions for the new year. How I figured out where I can serve with the greatest value in 2023. The key demographic issues for Encore Careers. How I'm using my knowledge of transitions and developing purpose to help people. The key skills or technologies needed for an Encore Career. How I'm putting more definition into what a Portfolio Career looks like. Ep 164164: Becoming Remarkable in Your Encore Career With Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence can often seem fluffy. It can be hard to figure out what it means let alone how to develop the skill. This is why I love the Beyond EI model. I recently had the opportunity to be on a panel where we talked about Beyond EI's new masterclass and discussed emotional intelligence at length. We went into the various ways that emotional intelligence is misconstrued and clarified why it's really about becoming remarkable and even more effective. In this episode, I want to dive deeper into this topic and help you understand how emotional intelligence can help you become remarkable in your Encore Career. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: The traditional model of EI versus the Beyond EI model. What a mind-body map is. Where we can have control over our responses. How to reframe your responses. Ep 161161: My Love/Hate Relationship with Technology
I've always been fascinated by technology. I've also always been fascinated by working with people. As a classic Industrial Engineer, my whole career revolved around exploring how people and systems (aka, technology) come together to make things happen. Early in my career, I learned several different programming languages. I was an early adopter of the PC. Later on, when I didn't see the use case for something or was forced to learn some technology, I wasn't as eager about it. My company installed a business and operations software called SAP towards the end of my career and I wasn't a fan of it. Now that I'm creating my Encore Career, it's all up to me. I don't have anyone to "handle" the tech for me. I'm an entrepreneur and I've got to learn it on my own. In this episode, I dive into this further and discuss my love/hate relationship with technology. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: Some of the struggles I've had with technology. How I've started to "get my arms around" all the tech out there. Broad categories of technology you may need in your Encore Career. The importance of having a network around you. How to prevent yourself from getting overwhelmed about technology. Ep 159Episode 159: Habits, Not Willpower, Will Create Your Successful Encore Career
Willpower alone will never lead to success. It certainly won't help you create a successful Encore Career. You need more than willpower–you need habits. Today, I want to talk all about healthy habits and how to implement them. To help me do so, I'm going back over some ideas from the study, "Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement" by Edward Jones and AgeWave. They talk about the stages of retirement and the disorientation that comes with it. When we retire, we disrupt the habits of work we've had for 30-40 years. All of a sudden, we're launched into a new environment. Additionally, in corporate life, you had a level of drive. You pushed through things and made it work. In your Encore Career, however, you only have so much drive. All of this explains why we have to depend on routines, checklists, and habits to help support us as we create our new Encore Career. Tune in to learn how! We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How to create a new habit. How to identify the distractions that are getting in your way. Why tracking your habits is important. Why you need to stop being so hard on yourself. Four especially useful habits. The power of simplification. Application questions to ask yourself. Ep 158158: Hey Boomer, Are You Bored?
It's your second act. You have the opportunity to shape the second half of your life. How are you making the most of that opportunity? You may be doing work or activities that are useful, but are they fulfilling? Whether you're leading a church group, working with the food pantry, or enjoying recreational activities, you need to come to terms with something: your fifth cruise may not be as interesting. Your second year of pickleball may not fulfill you in the way you want it to. You're probably not sure what might be next if that is true. What you do know is that there must be something "next" for you. In this episode, we're going to talk through some of your options for making the most of your second act. We're also going to be reviewing an article from Market Watch titled, "'I Needed Something to Do': How Working in Retirement is Being Embraced by Older Adults and Companies." We'll dive deeper into these concepts: What the pandemic taught us about the value of remote and part-time work. The demand for older workers by employers. Why retirees are returning to work. Possible new paths for you and your companies. Challenges that come with this new wave of older employees. An interesting question to consider. Ep 156156: Why a Shorter Workweek and More Flexibility Might Increase Longevity
STANFORD Magazine released an article a couple of months ago that began this way: "Today's youth likely have decades of 'extra' time coming to them. Psychologist Laura Carstensen wants them to spread those years out." The article is entitled "5 Ways to Prepare for a Longer Life" and it's all about preparing young people for the 35 years they will have after retirement. The Stanford Center on Longevity has created what's called "the new map of life" to address the critical question of how youth will manage all that extra time. Their team of postdoctoral fellows has reimagined a society molded around 100-year life spans. In this episode, I do an overview of the article and Stanford's work on the new map of life. I provide a summary of what they cover in the article, the conclusion they drew, and how all of that can be applied to your life and Encore Career. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: Why we must plan to work longer and differently. How to change the way you save money. Why regular exercise is crucial to preparing for a longer life. Why you should prioritize friendship. How to envision a long life that you love. Ep 153153: How Cultivating Deep Smarts Will Help Your Encore Career
Many of us would consider ourselves to be experts in something: maybe in our previous field of work, or with a tool that we've mastered, or a system that we've developed. Yet, when starting our encore career, we need to understand how to make that expertise work best for us. We may need to transfer knowledge to employees that work for us in our new careers, or we may need to market our expertise to our clients to show them they are in good hands. In considering this subject, I was reminded of a book I read back in 2005: Deep Smarts: How to Cultivate and Transfer Enduring Business Wisdom by Dorothy Leonard and Walter Swap. I was intrigued by this book when it came out, as it was centered around the organizations within the corporate world that I was still then a part of. But, I think that its teachings have great relevance to those of us starting our encore careers as well. In fact, Chip Conley of the Modern Elder Association recently held a book talk with author Dorothy Leonard to discuss how this information could be applied to this next stage of our professional lives. In today's episode I will walk you through some of the highlights of that book talk as well as some takeaways that I discovered from reading the book myself. I will also share a complimentary book that deals with the opposite skill sets that novices bring to the table to explore how a blended approach of expert and rookie mindsets can be most beneficial. Learning to embrace being both the expert and the apprentice will allow you to utilize your deep knowledge while developing a learning mindset that can help you tackle the swift changes that starting a new encore career will bring. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: What are the skills of those with deep smarts Some of the best ways to pass down or transfer expert knowledge The characteristics and limitations of experts vs. novices How expert skills may differ from rookie skills Why rookie smarts can be just as important as expertise Now, for some action steps: Check out the book Deep Smarts: How to Cultivate and Transfer Enduring Business Wisdom by Dorothy Leonard and Walter Swap Read up on the Harvard Business Review article on Deep Smarts Explore these ideas further with the complimentary book Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work, by Liz Wiseman Download the free worksheet: Three Steps You Need for a More Productive Workday Connect with Me: LinkedIn Facebook Please leave a Rating and Review: Since this podcast is new, I'm asking for Apple Podcasts reviews. Ep 152152: Making Career Transitions with Dave Whan
Your career path does not need to be one size fits all. In fact, today's episode will help you to explore the possibility that your encore career could unfold down a completely different path than what you are used to. Though there may be challenges that come with switching gears and pivoting to different lines of work or specialties, you will find that often employers appreciate the skills and expertise you bring to the table as an experienced and skilled worker. To help us unpack the benefits and challenges of making career transitions, I have brought my friend and former colleague, Dave Whan, onto the show today for a discussion. Dave has lots of experience in making the switch to new fields, specialities and spheres within the job market. In our discussion, he will share his perspectives as a chief human resources officer as well as additional perspectives from his role with the federal reserve bank and the various other roles that he has taken on throughout his career.Dave has a lot to offer us about his journey and the observations he's made throughout his experience with career transitioning. His tips can help you to broaden your horizons and take on a career move that will bring you the satisfaction you are looking for, even if it seems out of reach. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How to prepare to make a career transitions What to keep in mind when pivoting from one skill set to the next How to approach unfamiliar technology tools in a new role The importance of growth mindsets Networking tips when thinking about transitioning careers Why older, experienced workers are more valued by employers than you may realize Some of the workforce challenges that the US is facing and how encore career starters may help alleviate those challenges Now, for some action steps: Check out Dave's LinkedIn Profile Reach out to me regarding openings in my Encore Career group coaching program Download the free worksheet: Three Steps You Need for a More Productive Workday Connect with Me: LinkedIn Facebook Please leave a Rating and Review: Since this podcast is new, I'm asking for Apple Podcasts reviews. Ep 150150: The New Journey of Retirement
What is the new journey of retirement? We know that it doesn't look the way it did even 20 years ago. Retirement, how people spend their time once they're retired, and who can be classified as a "retiree" have all shifted significantly in the 21st century. In this episode, I look into a report on this topic. The report was done by Edward Jones and The Age Wave Institute and is called, "Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement." They performed a study of more than 11,000 North American adults, largely pre-retirees and retirees. Their purpose was, "To explore how the journey of retirement unfolds, the patterns of people's experience in retirement, and the keys to thriving along the way." Tune in to hear the key insights from this report and what this means for all of us who are pursuing Encore Careers. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: The ideal length of retirement for today's retirees. What today's retirees consider the purpose of retirement to be. The five major forces currently converging to reshape the new retirement and the lives of retirees. The four stages of the new journey of retirement. Boomers' new definitions of success. Ep 149149: Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old?
We talk a lot about creating your Encore Career on the podcast: how will you transfer your skills and what will you do? As you can see, most of what we talk about is related to the question of "what." However, today's episode will be a little different. We're going to discuss who you want to be when you grow old. This discussion is based off a book by Richard Leider and David Shapiro. I was introduced to Richard by Modern Elder Academy. We went through several sessions together and had many conversations about purpose, especially purpose later in life. One of the common themes we came back to over and over again is that purpose ties in with mindset. This is one of the first areas we talk about in the process of creating an Encore Career as well. We must do some hard work on our mindset to start navigating the path towards purposeful aging. In today's episode, I'm going to talk about this path, how mindset is related to purpose and creating an Encore Career, and more from Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old? We'll dive deeper into these concepts: Why the path to purposeful aging is personal, not prescriptive. How aging is a journey. Why getting old doesn't disqualify you from being useful. Why the language we use to describe ourselves is important. The difference between growing old and getting old. You're a human being, not a human doing. Why you should consider the legacy you're leaving behind. Parker Palmer's two questions. The ultimate conversation you must have with yourself. Ep 148148: What About My Encore Career in a Recession?
Do you want to be a victim or an actor? This is the question to ask in a recession. The truth is, rough seasons like recessions can be seen as challenges or opportunities. S1 Ep 144144: You Need Partners for An Encore Career
Last week, I shared the next steps you should take in creating your Encore Career. These steps are your foundation when you're just getting started. They take you from being fresh out of your corporate career, having no clue what you're doing to running a successful business in your Encore Career. In this episode, I share some more thoughts on this topic. Many of these "next steps" are inspired by books I'm reading. They provide practical step by steps for going out on your own and building a brand as a "silver entrepreneur." One of the highlights I've gleaned from these books is the importance of partners. We just can't do this Encore Career thing alone. Tune in as I discuss why we need partners so badly and some ways I've taken this concept to heart. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How demographics are changing. How positive thinking affects our health. Mike Kim's eight steps to building a profitable personal brand. How I've engaged with partners. People I've partnered with. Best practices for partnering with others. How partners have bettered my business and life. Ep 143143: Next Steps in Your Encore Career
Since the re-brand of this podcast, I've talked a lot about Encore Careers. I've explained what they are and why we need them in this day and age. In case you need a recap on why you should consider starting an Encore Career, let me remind you that 20% of people are over the age of 60 today. By 2034, more people will be over the age of 65 than under the age of 18. Therefore, older people are essential to the full functioning of our economy. So, how do we actually make an Encore Career a reality? Today, I want to get into the specifics of how to start one. Tune in to learn the eight steps to building your Encore Career, as inspired by my good friend and mentor Mike Kim. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: The eight steps of building a brand. Ep 142142: Reflections on the Modern Elder Academy Seminar
I recently completed the Modern Elder Academy Seminar. It was an amazing experience. I want to take some time in this episode to share my initial reflections on it. I've talked about The Modern Elder Academy in previous episodes, but for those who don't know, it's built upon the idea that, as we approach midlife, there are things we should continue doing with our careers. At about age 55, people start thinking of retiring but at that age, we're only halfway through our adult life. People are living longer and healthier these days and living longer will be more expensive. This is what the whole premise of this podcast and the concept of Encore Careers is based on. The Modern Elder Academy serves in this area as well. It was established as a residency-based program in Baja, Mexico and, since COVID required changing that, it is now an amazing virtual program. There are video elements of the residential program, recorded sessions from thought leaders, some "stretch" elements like poetry and other media, and reflection pieces built in. Tune in to hear more about the Modern Elder Academy and my thoughts looking back on it. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: What kind of content the Modern Elder Academy includes. Why reflection is so important. Different elements of the program. The flexibility of the program. The different transitions we go through in life. How to navigate transitions well. Why it's important to have a sense of purpose. Ep 140140: What is a 60 Year Career and Why Would I Want One?
Have you ever heard of 60 year career? From age 1 to 20, we are in our learning stage. From age 21 to 80, we are earning. From age 81 to 100, we are in elderhood. This looks very different from the way our parents lived their lives. Many of them retired at age 55 to 60. However, because people are living longer than ever nowadays, we may only be halfway through our lives when we turn 55. We must take some time to consider what we will do with all of the time we have left. This isn't just about Boomers. It will apply to everyone moving forward. So, let's discuss the concept of the 60 year career. In this episode, I discuss some ways you can change your mindset around and approach to aging. I provide some tips that help you understand why you'd want a 60 year career and how to make the most of it. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: What a 60 year career looks like. In this episode, we are talking to Jonathan Milligan about how he is helping entrepreneurs develop their businesses through training, coaching, and live events. I first worked with Jonathan when I was beginning the journey of starting my business. Now, I'm a member and a coach in his group coaching practice. He will talk about how, after creating a successful business, he then moved on to a deeper question: "Am I making a difference, as well as making money?" Jonathan will also share how he discovered the importance of building relationships. He realized that they are just as important as providing knowledge. Related to this, Jonathan and I get into how he has added the elements of Live events and Group/Peer coaching to help people even more. Ep 138138: Mid-way Reflections on My Experience in the Modern Elder Academy program
Midlife is a time when things start to shift and change. Any moment of change brings an opportunity for reinvention and revitalization. What do you truly want out of your career and your life? This is what I have been exploring lately. A few episodes ago, I discussed the making of the modern elder along with the book Wisdom at Work by Chip Conely. Chip is also the founder of the Modern Elder Academy (MEA), a program I have been going through myself. MEA is on a mission to reframe midlife from a crisis to a calling. Its purpose is to help you find a renewed sense of purpose. MEA was founded as a social enterprise dedicated to offering people a place and the tools to navigate midlife and emerge refreshed, inspired, and better equipped to flourish in their next chapter. In this episode, I discuss my experiences in the Modern Elder Academy. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: What MEA entails. How my experience in MEA has been thus far. The many transitions we go through in midlife. Simple mindfulness techniques I've learned in MEA. What appreciative inquiry is. Why we need to shift our mindset about aging. Ep 135135: A Simple Coaching Process with Lori Glander and Rena Gainey
Have you ever had someone, at work or in your personal life, come up to you and ask if you have a minute? Do you start with giving them directions? Most people have a default or go-to mode when someone brings a problem or an issue to them, almost like having a tool belt around your waist. And so, when someone brings a situation to you, what is the tool you're most likely to pull out? Having a coach can accelerate your progress in creating your encore career. While coaching and being coached is simple, it can take a lifetime to master. Helping people think through the problem is usually a better move – and that's essentially what coaching is about. In today's episode, I am delighted to once again have executive coaches, Lori Glander and Rena Gainey, as they share their insights from several years of coaching and developing leaders. Ep 132132: You Need to Change Why You Are Smart in an Encore Career
Did you know that entrepreneurs actually decline between their 30's and 50s? Most people assume that the more successful they are, they're less susceptible to becoming irrelevant later in life. The truth is, the greater our achievements are in our early life and the greater attachment we have to them, the more we notice how we're not performing quite as well as we used to. In this episode, I'll be sharing some insights from the books of Arthur C. Brooks, where he proposes that professional decline can come much sooner than you think. We also talk about how you can transition to your role using crystallized intelligence over fluid intelligence and get the most out of your encore career. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: A brief background about Arthur C. Brooks The contrast between poets and historians The difference between fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence The trap of achievement using fluid intelligence Transition to roles using crystallized intelligence Re-imagining how you are keeping score Now, for some action steps: Grab a copy of From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life by Arthur C. Ep 131131: Wisdom at Work, The Making of a Modern Elder
What do modern elders bring to the table? Contrary to stereotypes of older workers being poor performers and resistant to change, among many myths out there, modern elders have a lot more to offer than most people think. In this episode, I'm doing a review of the book, "Wisdom at Work: The Making of a Modern Elder" by Chip Conley, which has been instrumental in my thinking about an encore career. Working from his own experience, Chip ran a boutique hotel company for over 24 years before selling it in the early 2000s. With his extensive experience in the hospitality industry, Chip soon became a mentor to the CEO of Airbnb and, eventually, its employees, who were only half of Chip's age. Without knowledge of the technology side of business, Chip was also open to learning more about the things he needed to learn. Whether you're still figuring out what to do in the next phase of your life, or you're already transitioning to a new career, take insights from what I'm going to be sharing with you today. Be open to growth, hold on to curiosity, and get energized for the second half of your life! We'll dive deeper into these concepts: Moving from a knowledge worker to a wisdom worker What an elder could bring to the table What modern elders need to do Don't retire, but rewire Looking for examples of people who grew in their second half of life Start with making the world better for five people Myths and stereotypes of older workers The digital quotient Now, for some action steps: Download the free worksheet: Three Steps You Need for a More Productive Workday Grab the book Wisdom at Work: The Making of a Modern Elder by Chip Conley Check out Modern Elder Academy Take the Encore Career Clarity Quiz Connect with Me: LinkedIn Facebook Please leave a Rating and Review: Since this podcast is new, I'm asking for Apple Podcasts reviews. Ep 128128: 2 Great Resources for an Encore Career
Today I'm going to look over two books that have been very helpful for me in my encore career. They are great resources for anyone considering an encore career. The books explore many of the things that go on when building a business in your retirement-age years. The first book is Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the Second Half of Life by Marc Miller and Susan Lahey. I interviewed Marc on episode 111 of the podcast so you can hear more about him there. The second book is Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career over 50 by John Tarnoff. Both these books have similar themes. They are aimed at people who are working on creating encore careers. However, they are also a little bit different as they have some different ways of approaching this topic. All in all, both of these books have really helped me in my thinking. Obviously, I'm not the one who invented the idea of an encore career. However, I've been on the journey myself and, if you have any interest in creating an encore career, I recommend each of these books as valuable resources. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: Marc Miller's career journey. The mindset change we must make in our encore careers. Why we need to be both mentors and mentees. How to build a new, diverse network in your encore career. Marc's SMAC acronym. John Tarnoff's background in entertainment. Why we need to redefine who we are, what we want to do, and why we want to do it. John's five-step methodology. How to reconcile the weaknesses in your resume. What a SWOT analysis is and how to do one. How to present yourself as a thought leader. How to combat ageism with energy and enthusiasm.
