Ep 125Thoughts for Young Men with Bennett Rogers
Buy the Book! https://hesedandemet.com/product/thoughts-for-young-men/ Thoughts for Young Men By J. C. Ryle | Edited by Bennett Rogers Thoughts for Young Men was originally published in 1888 as a chapter in The Upper Room, and it has become a minor spiritual classic in its own right. It has few equals among the all-too-short list of solid Christian books for young men. Ryle’s insights were derived from more than four decades of pastoral experience, three decades of parenting, and his own experiences as a young man. Ryle always had a heart for young men. He regularly addressed groups like the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and the Church of England’s Young Men’s Society. By all accounts J.C. Ryle was a “man’s man,” and his Thoughts for Young Men have proven to be both valuable and timeless. This new edition is designed for devotional reading, small group studies, and one-to-one discipleship. The text has been divided into short readings based on Ryle’s own subheadings and lightly edited to make it more accessible to modern readers. It also includes: · Scripture quotations and memory verses from the ESV · Information boxes and chapter summaries · Reflection questions and suggestions for further reading · A discussion guide for group leaders We’ve also included Daniel the Prophet, a biographical lecture Ryle delivered to a group of young men at the Liverpool YMCA in 1889, which hasn’t been published since that time. This work summarizes and illustrates many of the main points Ryle makes in Thoughts for Young Men. In partnership with Reformed Youth Ministries (www.rym.org)

Prior to this, I was a postdoctoral research fellow, and then senior researcher in systematic and historical theology, at the Theologische Universiteit Kampen. I hold undergraduate degrees in law (LLB Hons, Aberdeen) and theology (BTh Dist., Glasgow). My PhD, on the Dutch dogmatician Herman Bavinck, was written at the University of Edinburgh. I work as a systematic and historical theologian. To date, the bulk of my research and writing has focused on neo-Calvinism, a form of Reformed Christianity that developed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the Netherlands, and that has continued to evolve in a range of international contexts. My first book, Trinity and Organism, was published by Bloomsbury in 2012. More recently, I was the co-editor of Neo-Calvinism and the French Revolution, with the same publisher. In 2017, my book Herman Bavinck on Preaching and Preachers, was published by Hendrickson. Following this, I worked on Christian Worldview (co-edited and co-translated with Gray Sutanto and Cory Brock), which was published by Crossway. My most recent book, Bavinck: A Critical Biography was published in 2020 by Baker Academic, and won the History and Biography Book of the Year prize at The Gospel Coalition 2020 Book Awards. It is also a finalist in the 2021 ECPA Christian Book Awards. I serve as Associate Editor of the Journal of Reformed Theology, published by Brill. I have written for The Times, The Herald, The Scotsman, Christianity Today, Modern Reformation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Nederlands Dagblad, and have taken part in broadcasts on BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Alba and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. I have broad interests in Reformed theologies and theologians, with particular foci on Scottish-Dutch Reformed connections, public theology, and the relationship of theology to the phenomenon of multilingualism. I speak, read and write English, Scottish Gaelic, Dutch and French.

Ep 118James Hinton with Chance Faulkner
Purchase the Diary of James Hinton edited by Chance Faulkner here: https://hesedandemet.com/product/the-diary-of-james-hinton/ The name of the eighteenth-century Baptist minister James Hinton (1761–1823) is not one that is well-known by any standard, even to those who specialize in the study of English Baptist history. Yet, along with his friends Andrew Fuller (1754–1815) and John Ryland, Jr. (1753–1825), Hinton was ‘one of those Baptist leaders who, at the end of the eighteenth century, secured the revival of Baptist life in Britain.’ And like many of his theological persuasion—Hinton was a Dissenter of Calvinistic Baptist convictions—Hinton regarded the keeping of a diary as a spiritual discipline. Hinton’s diary is no longer extant, but large portions of it can be found embedded in a biographical study of Hinton by his son John Howard Hinton (1791–1873). This book contains these portions that have been skillfully re-assembled by Chance Faulkner as a diary.

Ep 112The Empire of the Holy Spirit with Michael Haykin
https://hesedandemet.com/product/the-empire-of-the-holy-spirit-reflections-on-biblical-and-historical-patterns-of-life-in-the-spirit/ The Empire of the Holy Spirit: Reflections on biblical and historical patterns of life in the Spirit By Michael A.G. Haykin In an interview that he gave in 2011, historian Mark Noll related how an African scholar had once told him that Western historians needed “to get the Holy Spirit back” into their writing of history. Western historians have been so focused on a multitude of ways of explaining the past—via “political systems, strong personalities, military conflicts, economic forces”—that they have had no space for understanding the work of the Holy Spirit in history. This collection of essays on the person and work of the Holy Spirit seeks to show what a proper pneumatological focus can mean for both historical and theological reflection, and why this observation by this African Christian is so vital for the West in the twenty-first century.

Ep 99Popery in a New Dress: The Baxterian Controversy
“I cannot see but that the Doctrine some Men strive to promote, is but little better than Popery in a new Dress.”[1] In Benjamin Keach’s sermon titled The Marrow of True Justification, Keach is concerned about Christians who err on this important doctrine. Keach was staunchly opposed to the teaching that sincere obedience (or works) plus faith equates justification. He thought that this teaching was reverting to Roman Catholicism—popery in a new dress. If my word count is correct, Keach references “Mr. Baxter” 6 times in this sermon. In this podcast episode, we examine what has come to be called the Baxterian controversy. Ep 94Dismantling Dispensationalism with Dewey Dovel Pt.1

Ep 93A Church Planting Conversation with Creston Thomas
Creston grew up with a family that loved the person of Christ but he was hostile towards the gospel at a young age after seeing professing believers living in willful sin. While attending a church function, he came to the knowledge that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God but the Lord’s mercies overflowed by graciously calling him from death to life around the age of 14. After this supernatural work, the Lord has continuously grown him in the knowledge of the Sustainer of the universe. He became a member at Wheeler Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and New St. Hurricane Missionary Baptist Church. By Creston growing up most of his life on the Westside of Pine Bluff, he was able to see the brokenness and hurt in his marginalized community. The memories of the brokenness seen in Pine Bluff created a heart to see Christ exalted in dark spaces. This heart led him to share the love of Christ with refugee families from Burundi, Nepal, Tanzania, and Burma in Memphis, TN, and Fort Worth, TX. While being transplanted to Kentucky for seminary, he was involved with various ministries at the Kentucky State Prison, Louisville Rescue Mission, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Creston graduated from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity in Biblical and Theological Studies. While at Southern, he became a member at the Reformed Baptist Church of Louisville. His interests include studying Biblical languages, Patristics, Reformation history, and Apologetics. Prior to attending Southern, he obtained an undergraduate degree at the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis. He is bi-vocational as a leader at Christ the Redeemer.
