My guest this week is the founder and Chairman of the Mises Institute, Lew Rockwell. In 1990, Lew wrote a historic manifesto called, "The Case for Paleo- Libertarianism". This was a case to denounce the culturally leftist instincts of mainstream libertarianism and make the case that liberty thrives much better in a culturally conservative setting. Within the pages of the famed "Rothbard-Rockwell Report", the case was made to cut ties with the Libertarian Party and to back presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan. The political climate of the day was one that saw a mainstream conservative candidate who was an anti-interventionist and not afraid to call out the dangers of politically correct culture. Seeing that as an option and the libertine/leftist/atheist leanings of the Libertarian Party gave Murray Rothbard and Lew Rockwell cause to align with the Buchanan campaign and denounce the LP. Fast forward to today's political climate. Do you see any parallels between then and now? Is it time to walk away from the Libertarian Party in order to support right-wing populism? Kevin instituted a "no masks allowed" policy at the Liberty Tree Tavern around two weeks ago when people were still freaked out about dying from COVID-19. As you can imagine, the mob came after him. He received threats, doxing, and all of the usual scare tactics the fundamentalist left likes to use. He also gained a lot of support from locals and people from all over coming into his bar and wanting to tip big and give him their business. My guest this week is Mises Institute Senior Fellow and Austrian Economist, Dr Mark Thornton. Mark discusses the economic downturn we are currently in, and it's one that he and many other Austrian economists predicted. It wasn't caused by the coronavirus, although the virus may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. The symptoms of this bust have been in place much longer than the symptoms of the coronavirus. The fundamentals were weak, and the Federal Reserve, as usual, is the problem, not the cure. There is simply not enough money for grandiose ideas at that level, so it's now time to end the wars and start pulling the troops home... from everywhere. We couldn't afford the global military adventures before. We certainly can't afford them now. My guest today is journalist and author Peter Van Buren. Peter has fought hard for the principle of free speech. Peter worked for the State Department for 24 years, including a stint in Iraq. When his book, "We Meant Well: How I Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People", was released, the US Government came after him, claiming that he published classified material. Peter also wrote articles for the left-leaning publication, "The Nation", until they weren't happy that he was writing articles promoting free speech, and they stopped accepting his articles. However, The American Conservative does still appreciate his stance on unfettered free speech. This is a microcosm of a cultural shift, in general. The modern left has vocally come out against free speech and the modern right has embraced it. We get into this topic along with discussing Peter's excellent work on the Russiagate saga. My guest this week is John Baeza, and we discuss the three years he attempted to be a "libertarian cop". John is a retired member of the NYPD, where he was a detective who was assigned to the Manhattan Special Victims Squad. There he investigated and reviewed approximately 1,000 cases of rape, serial rape, sexual homicide, felony sexual assault, and child abuse cases. During his tenure there, he started realizing the pain and suffering caused by the war on drugs. He was reading libertarian books, and after that, there was no turning back for him. John became a libertarian. After his career with NYPD was over with, he became a Deputy down in Florida where he made a promise to himself: from that point on, he would be a libertarian cop. In this episode we talk about how that went for him and how it ended. John was also the head of security for the Ron Paul campaign! I, of course, had to ask him all about that as well. My guest this week is the great Lew Rockwell. Lew is the founder and chairman of the Mises Institute, as well as the creator of the great news site, LewRockwell.com. We discuss a variety of topics including Lew's new book, "Against The Left: A Rothbardian Libertarianism". Lew is a great representative of the hardcore Rothbardian brand of libertarianism, and we apply it to immigration, egalitarianism, and the dangers posed by the left, including the so-called "left libertarians". Lew also talks about coalitions that libertarians should strive to forge in the current climate. He was kind enough to email a list of the Mises and Rothbard books that he recommends.
