Ep 283283 - Heather Lovegood, Part 1 - Surrender in the Face of Fear of the Unknown

E

I'm a firm believer in the connectedness of everything. Healing happens at the intersection of spirituality, science, and Indigenous wisdom. Sure, each principle can (and has!) exist in its own sphere, but the true magic is in the mix. Heather Lovegood agrees. She's a holistic bodyworker and lymphatic drainage expert who provides healing-centered, trauma-trained services to clients in Chicago. She helps people build the capacity to identify and release buried, inflammatory emotions–those squishy, sticky, and often devastating sensations that our bodies hold onto in the wake of complex trauma or prolonged periods of stress. GUEST BIO A long-time student of life, Heather Lovegood's own healing path led her to the healing arts, specifically bodywork. Drawing from these tools for both her personal practice and her work with clients has been the deepest gift and greatest of teachers. Ep 280280 - Ted Rau, Part 2 - Snap Out of Cynicism and Ignite a Glimmer of Hope!

E

If you missed Part One of my conversation with sociocracy expert Ted Rau, PhD., hit play on that episode now. You won't be disappointed, nor will you want to miss our introduction to sociocracy, the decentralized way for organizations, workplaces, and communities to make decisions. In Part Two, Ted and I expand on how sociocracy might work in the group practice environment and how the fundamental issues of trust, personal power, and organizational accountability inform its success. GUEST BIO Ted Rau is an advocate, trainer, and consultant for self-governance with a focus on sociocracy. After earning a PhD in linguistics and working in academia, he co-founded Sociocracy For All in 2016, a now global organization with 250 members. Ted consults with mission-driven organizations, teaches, and actively participates in Sociocracy For All's work. A transgender man and father of five, Ted has lived in Massachusetts since 2010. He is the co-author of three books on self-governance, including Many Voices One Song (2018) and Collective Power (2023), and is currently writing on governance and wisdom. Ep 279279 - Ted Rau, Part 1 - Leading Therapy Practices to a New Future Through Collective Governance

E

Change may be inevitable, but it's far from easy. That's especially true in the therapy field. Part of my own shift is a greater focus (on this podcast and IRL) on system-wide transformation, especially in the group practice realm. How do we bridge the gap between employees and owners when both feel overworked and underpaid? Sociocracy could be the answer. But first, what the heck is sociocracy? Ted Rau, PhD., co-founded Sociocracy For All (SoFA), a nonprofit that makes decentralized, consent-based governance accessible to workplaces, organizations, and communities. He knows a lot about how sociocracy works in principle and practice, having become a practitioner of the governance style as a member of an intentional living community. GUEST BIO Ted Rau is an advocate, trainer, and consultant for self-governance with a focus on sociocracy. After earning a PhD in linguistics and working in academia, he co-founded Sociocracy For All in 2016, a now global organization with 250 members. Ep 278278 - Judith Herman - Activism is the Antidote to Despair

E

In the words of my esteemed co-host, Anne Remy, "There's a difference between an elder and a person who is older than you." Judith Lewis Herman, MD, is wise––a psychiatrist, professor, researcher, author, and advocate who helped establish the diagnosis of PTSD back before many of us were born. In addition to her work with veterans and children, Judith fundamentally altered the discourse around women's traumatic experiences and pioneered subsequent treatments for victims of abuse. How's that for street-cred sagacity!? I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that this is Anne Remy's final episode as co-host. Don't worry, it's all for good! You can find out more by tuning in. I couldn't think of a more fitting interview than this to close out Anne's incredible tenure. It's been my pleasure and privilege to share this virtual space with her. GUEST BIO Judith Lewis Herman, MD, is a part-time senior lecturer in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For 30 years until she retired, she was director of training at the Victims of Violence Program at the Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, MA. She's the author of award-winning books, Father-Daughter Incest and Trauma And Recovery. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1984 and the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies like that's life goals. In 2007, she was named a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Her new book, Truth And Repair: How Trauma Survivors Envision Justice was published in March 2023. *** Redefining the Future of Psychotherapy: From Disruption to Innovation Are you feeling the seismic shifts currently reshaping the therapy field? Ep 277277 - Ki Smith - Why Curiosity is the Best Catalyst for Change

E

There's no denying that our systems and selves are at a crossroads. So, my fellow therapists, will we accept the universe's invitation to evolve, or will the profession regress beyond the point of no return? Ki Smith believes in the potential of the collective to transform and transcend our current fractured moment. They're a psychotherapist, coach, mediator, and facilitator of power-conscious nonviolent communication and an affiliated teacher with the Right Use Of Power Institute. The two of us explore what it means to foster personal and professional relationships in which collective care is valued, communal wisdom is centered, and power to the people is reinforced. GUEST BIO Ki Smith (she/they) is an Internal Family Systems (IFS)-trained contemplative psychotherapist, coach, mediator, and facilitator of Power-Conscious Nonviolent Communication, and an affiliated teacher with the Right Use of Power Institute. Ki works with individuals, dyads, and groups to support restoration, healing, and transformation. She is passionate about co-creating beloved community where collective care is valued, collective wisdom is centered, and collective power is strengthened. Ep 276276 - Elle McAlpine - An Intimacy Coordinator Sets the Stage for Consent and Authentic Connection on Screen and in Real Life

E

Let's play fill-in-the-blank: Sex is _____ . The possibilities are endless! But, my word of choice is intimate. It's a perfect shorthand for the spectrum of desires, experiences, and, yes, traumas that inform every sexual encounter––even if the act in question is fake. As in: part of an acclaimed Hollywood film in which sex represents the main character's evolving agency. Intimacy Coordinator Elle McAlpine has worked on some impressive projects, including the award-winning film, Poor Things and the award-winning Netflix series Baby Reindeer. Co-host Anne Remy engages Elle in a nuanced conversation about the power dynamics, energy transference, and permission structures at play behind the scenes of our favorite films and series. GUEST BIO Elle McAlpine is the co-founder of EK Intimacy and brings a unique perspective to intimacy coordination through her background in acting and directing. Passionate about exploring character psychology and storytelling through sexual expression, she helps create spaces where actors can approach intimate scenes with agency and creativity. Her recent work includes Poor Things, One Day, and The Winter King. Ep 275275 - Marc Mathys - Uniting the Collective Beyond Right and Wrong Despite Disagreement

E

Oh, fellow therapists, how I love you! That said, I'm super-concerned about our capacity to move through interpersonal challenges exacerbated by, among other things, a volatile election season. My question is: How do we model being with folks outside the profession––even those we disagree with––if we can't make space for complexities of thought and motivation within our own community? Marc Mathys considers Spiral Dynamics a solid foundation on which to build. You may have already guessed that Marc and I spent the bulk of this episode exploring the trajectory of the collective. What patterns are playing out? Where are the avenues for evolution? What can we, as individuals, do to support system-wide changes in our profession, our families, or the world? GUEST BIO Marc Mathys is an accomplished specialist in organizational transformation, certified professional coach, and social entrepreneur who holds multiple degrees, including Engineering and an MBA in Responsible Management & Leadership. As co-founder of Paradigm21, he guides organizations towards agile, distributed models while serving as a sought-after consultant and trainer in Spiral Dynamics and systems change. Self-care is a basic human right. Sadly, intuitive healing practices like acupuncture are often dismissed, especially in Western society, as woo-woo or pseudoscientific time-wasters. Thank goodness for practitioners like the delightful Jo Darling in Brighton, UK! Jo is passionate about women's health and healing, and she's also co-host Anne Remy's acupuncturist, so we'll finally get to the core of Anne's cross liver sitch. Ep 273273 - Deborah Ooten - How to Make Sense of These Tenuous Times Using the Enneagram and Spiral Dynamics

E

Discomfort doesn't automatically denote danger. Identifying the difference and holding those nuances takes practice. Let this episode be part of the lesson plan. Deborah Ooten, PhD., is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center, and she's the first person to successfully merge the teachings of the Enneagram with the Spiral Dynamics evolutionary model. I'm a fan of both models; my co-host Anne Remy isn't. Friction can rub us the wrong way AND expand our capacity for complex conversations. As Anne says, it's possible to engage with concepts that you vehemently disagree with, express concerns, explore differences, and come out the other end while still having a reasonable opinion of one another. GUEST BIO Deborah A. Ooten, PhD, is the founder/director of the Conscious Living Center. She has her doctorate in clinical psychology, is trained as a craniosacral therapist and is a Certified Enneagram Teacher in the Narrative Tradition. She is the founder and lead trainer of Conscious Dynamics, LLC. And they reveal how kindred humans are despite the manufactured divisions of race, religion, or economic status. GUEST BIO Alex Jones is a storyteller, interviewer, and documentary photographer dedicated to capturing the depth of human experiences through intimate conversations with strangers. Ep 271271 - Tiffany Konyen - Student Loan Debt is a Social Justice Issue!

E

If you're one of the 43 million Americans currently living under the crushing weight of student loan debt, that's by design, not personal failure. Under our late-stage capitalist system, the cost of a college degree has far outpaced the wages offered to pay for it. Tiffany Konyen, a Doctoral Candidate in the Anthropology and Social Change department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, wants to change how America thinks about financing education for its citizens. Their research offers insight into the impacts of student loan debt on material life conditions and processes of transformation within graduate education in the US. GUEST BIO Tiffany Konyen (she/they) is a Doctoral Candidate in the Anthropology and Social Change Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, CA. Their research offers insight into the impacts of student loan debt on material life conditions, as well as on processes of transformation within graduate education in the US. They are a member and organizer with the Debt Collective, the country's first Debtor's Union with the expressed purpose of collectively de-stigmatizing and leveraging experiences of indebtedness towards systemic change. Ep 269269 - Mark Fischler - Stepping Out of the Collective Trance of Society

E

With the amount of time folks invest in their news feeds, social scrolls, podcasts, and hot-takes, you'd think we'd have a better grasp on "the whole picture." But we only operate with a partial perspective regardless of the situation or issue. This universal truth pushes many of us toward the false comfort of binary thinking. Podcast host and Professor of Criminal Justice at Plymouth State University Dr. Mark Fischler says we don't have to pick sides. He believes that if we can get comfortable holding multiple truths at once, even if we don't understand them, we can solve society's most distressing problems. GUEST BIO Mark Fischler is an award-winning professor of criminal justice at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. He is a former NH Public Defender. Ep 268268 - Khaled ElSherbini - How a Scientist Interprets Ancient Wisdom Traditions for a Modern Audience

E

If you like your woo-woo grounded in modern scientific understanding, this convo is for you! Khaled ElSherbini, PhD, is the founder of Consciousness Academy (CA), the leading IEA-accredited Enneagram school located on the Sinai Peninsula, which is, coincidentally, a place that three of the world's major religions (Islam, Judaism, and Christianity) believe holds spiritual significance. CA quickly became a destination for seeking a deeper understanding of and connection to oneself. Students appreciate Khaled's thoroughly modern scientific background and his ability to translate ancestral esoteric theories for contemporary living. He relies on the Enneagram, an ancient personality typing tool, to help students gain self-awareness and insight into their motivations and behaviors. GUEST BIO Dr. Khaled ElSherbini is a transpersonal psychologist and former aerospace scientist. He is the visionary founder of The Consciousness Academy and Enneagram Egypt and also serves as a faculty member at Meridian University. Dr. ElSherbini dedicates his expertise to the realms of consciousness, personal development, and psycho-spiritual transformation. Ep 267267 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Do We Make Wonderful, Healthy Spaces for Practice Owners AND Their Staff?

E

After 18 episodes featuring conversations with burnt-out (and not burnt-out) practice owners and some of their employees, I've got survey responses that prove we can band together to form the practices we desperately want to participate in. But, owners, we gotta have a chat… Employees feel underpaid, undervalued, and undersupported, while a lot of practice owners feel underappreciated and overwhelmed. The data also emphasized chasms in our understanding of daily practice life––caseloads and onboarding, supervision and power differentials, profit distribution, and benefits packages. I can now recognize that I caused my staff a lot of harm as I tried to figure out how to run the business. You, dear practice owner, don't have to make those same mistakes. Get on the waitlist for Group Practice (R)evolution! Download a copy of the survey data slide deck from this episode at Gumroad! Watch the video version of this episode on YouTube. Ep 266266 - Charlotte Sills - Love, Power, and Authenticity in the Therapeutic Relationship

E

There's a universal truth that goes something like this: To get where we're going, it's a good idea to examine where we've been. I'll add that it's also in our best interest to chat up the elders. Charlotte Sills, MA, MSc, is a psychotherapist in private practice in the UK and also an elder with intelligence and foresight to spare, literal textbooks worth of knowledge, as her conversation with co-host Anne Remy demonstrates. Charlotte and Anne occupy opposite ends of the age spectrum. Still, they're committed to learning from each other and working together to realize dreams for our profession (less racism, more connection) and humanity (less hurt, more healing). GUEST BIO Charlotte Sills (she/her) is a psychotherapist, coach, supervisor, and trainer in private practice in London UK, and on the teaching faculty of Metanoia Institute and Ashridge Hult Business School, UK. She is also Professor of Coaching at Ashridge and on the Steering Committee of the International Association of Relational Transactional Analysis. She has published widely in the field of therapy and coaching. Authentic Leaders Group Are you a therapist stepping into leadership for the first time? Ep 265265 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: What Do You Do When Practice Ownership Feels Out of Alignment With Your Temperament? With David Clinton

E

All good things must end, including this special series. But not before my chat with the delightfully analog David Clinton, a dear friend and former practice owner. After exiting his group practice just as the pandemic hit, David found his happy ending (or beginning) as a solo therapist with a limited online presence. His 20+ year career reminds us that we can contribute good things to this field by cultivating stubborn hope and an embodied way of being no matter which professional space we inhabit. GUEST BIO David Clinton (he/him) is a licensed counselor who has worked in private practice for over 20 years in the western suburbs outside of Chicago. During that time he has served as a clinician, supervisor, and group practice owner. Authentic Leaders Group Are you a therapist stepping into leadership for the first time? Ep 264264 - Reframing and Repairing Our Relationship to Power With Amanda Aguilera, The Right Use of Power Institute

E

As therapists, we're famous for not doing our own work, so, of course, we shy away from acknowledging that we hold any power at all. Worse, we conflate power and cruelty, an assumption that keeps us mired in fear and inaction. But now that we've identified the issue, we can transform it. Dr. Amanda Aguilera is one of my favorite facilitators for this kind of work. She's the executive director of The Right Use Of Power Institute (RUPI), a global non-profit that helps people utilize their power with "awareness, wisdom, compassion, and skill." I've been training with RUPI for a couple of months now and I'm thrilled to report that the entire organization is aligned with the vision set forth by its founder, Dr. Cedar Barstow, to inspire and support anyone who wants to use their power in the most ethical way possible. GUEST BIO Dr. Amanda Aguilera (she/her/ella) is a consultant and facilitator in the area of power-and-equity consciousness and conflict resolution. Driven by her core values of curiosity, courage, and connection, Amanda is adept at putting things together in new ways, creating visuals that help make learning more accessible, and communicating complex ideas in simple ways. Ep 263263 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can You Cultivate True Inclusivity and Growth? With Gabi Granoff and Evelyn Williams, Solway Psychology

E

Hey, white practice owners! The secret to building a business that embodies the principles of equity, inclusivity, and anti-racism is… Actually, I'll let my guests do the honors. Gabi Granoff, PsyD., is the co-owner of Solway Psychology, a racially diverse practice in Chicago. Evelyn Williams, LSW, is a clinician and intake manager at the practice. They personify what's possible when everyone takes responsibility for strengthening their side of the owner-employee relationship. GUEST BIO Gabi Granoff, PsyD., (she/her) is a licensed clinical psychologist and the co-owner of Solway Psychology, a group private practice in Chicago. At Solway, Gabi serves as the Clinical Director and feels honored to support other therapists to connect to their most authentic selves. Her own clinical work is focused on complex trauma with psychodynamic, relational, feminist, multicultural and somatic lenses. Evelyn Williams, LSW, (she/her) completed her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and has over 25 years of clinical experience across various settings; including large non-profits, outpatient clinics, crisis intervention, schools, and now private practice. She has provided both clinical and administrative supervision to social work interns and professionals. Equitable Care Certification One of the identities often missed from therapists' radar is sex workers. Sex workers are disproportionately excluded or harmed in the context of policing social services, healthcare, emergency services, and mental health support. Ep 262262 - Whitney Capps - Do You Need An Executive Coach Or A Therapist?

E

Confession time: I harbor biases against folks who call themselves coaches. The profession is completely unregulated, and many (most?) coaches lack the education necessary to help clients navigate change. Anne's conversation with longtime friend and, ahem, executive and team coach Whitney Capps challenged my prejudices as much as it corroborated my rationale for remaining skeptical. GUEST BIO Whitney Capps (she/her) is on a mission for transformation! Learning is best when it's experiential, community-based, personal, and fun. She has been facilitating, training, coaching, hosting development programming for humans for over ten years. Currently, Whitney is sharing her gifts and sharpening her practice with emerging leaders and teams via her own LLC Rootworks and with a number of other coaching/development organizations. Until then, money remains both the glue and the wedge of any practice owner/employee relationship. GUEST BIO Casey Gromer, the founder of C-Suite Boutique and host of the Female Founders Breaking Boundaries podcast, specializes in helping visionary practice owners create profit by implementing leadership and accountability systems. Ep 259259 - Trace Bell Part 2 - Spiral Dynamics, Healthy Evolution, and Transcending Old Beliefs for Individuals, Organizations, and Society

E

Part II of my conversation with Trace Bell shall forever more be referred to as "The One Where We Dig Into Spiral Dynamics". If you're new to SD, it helps to think of it as a modern language that expands our understanding of the stages of evolutionary development in individuals, organizations, or whole societies. Still confused? Don't be. SD is simply another tool that therapists can reference, easily coexisting alongside Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Erickson's stages of development, or any other preferred model. GUEST BIO Trace Bell is an integration guide, transformational coach, and cultivator of emergence. He is passionate about the intersection of consciousness and systems change and co-founded a non-profit called Holon Institute that is dedicated to helping people heal the separation from themselves, each other and nature. Ep 258258 - Trace Bell Part 1 - Examining the Beauty and Shadow of Spiritual Work Through Spiral Dynamics

E

The context of this rare two-part conversation is Spiral Dynamics (SD), a model that gauges the evolutionary development of individuals, societies, cultures, and organizations. Shepherding us through the details of this model is Trace Bell, an integration guide and transformational coach. Part I of our chat delves into Trace's background and the childhood forces that shaped his adult perspective. It's an origins story that includes the poli-sci track at UCLA, megachurches, and an influential pastor father. GUEST BIO Trace Bell is an integration guide, transformational coach, and cultivator of emergence. He is passionate about the intersection of consciousness and systems change and co-founded a non-profit called Holon Institute that is dedicated to helping people heal the separation from themselves, each other and nature. Ep 257257 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Do You Build a Liberation-Focused Practice in This Flaming Capitalist Junkyard? with Jessica Eubanks-Chavira

E

Liberation is a two-way street, dear practice owner. Making an innovative, enlightened leap forward means going up against old ways of doing things. Unsustainable management practices! Limiting mindsets! Antiquated business models! To say nothing of capitalism, racism, or the patriarchy. Jessica Eubanks Chavira, LCSW-S, wanted to liberate herself and her community. Once she articulated that desire, Jessica divorced herself from white supremacy culture and created Purple Couch Counseling, a sacred space cultivated specifically for Black womxn healing. GUEST BIO Jessica Eubanks-Chavira, LCSW-S, is the owner and founder of Purple Couch Therapy. She is a mother, wife, goofy, human, imperfect, rooted, system disrupter, norm shifter, and grief warrior. Jess uses a historical, intergenerational, institutional, and interpersonal lens when working with people. Basically, we know it's not all on you; there are many factors that play into our mental health… and you're doing your best to thrive despite everything. Ep 256256 - Amelia Nagoski - Sage, Scientific Advice For Minimizing The Effects Of Burnout

E

I know from burnout, that combination of bone-deep mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion that manifests in feelings of overwhelm, joylessness, and desperation. Sadly, you probably do, too. Anne's unexpectedly musical convo with author and choir director Amelia Nagoski, DMA, is the burnout primer we all need: the science behind it, the antidote for it, and why women experience it differently than men. Because, of course, we do. Amelia shares the good/bad news from her book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle, which she co-wrote alongside her twin sister Emily Nagoski, PhD. GUEST BIO Amelia Nagoski, D.M.A., was an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music at Western New England University. She co-authored the New York Times bestseller Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle with her sister Emily Nagoski, Ph.D. Amelia's work involves helping singers connect with their internal experiences through dynamic techniques. She lives in New England with her husband, one cat, and two rescue dogs. AUTHENTIC LEADERS GROUP Are you a therapist stepping into leadership for the first time? Ep 255255 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can You Repair a Rift When You Feel Like You've Let Your Employees Down? With Jena Alfaro

E

Welcome to the reckoning––mine, not yours. I made dozens (hundreds?) of mistakes as a practice owner, and while I can't take any of them back, this series is a way of paying my accountability forward. Jenna Alfaro, LCSW, CADC, is here to hold me to that promise. She's a former employee of mine and, while our professional association didn't end Bravo-Reunion-Special bad, its demise does confirm my blindspots (onboarding, task delegation). It also illustrates where Jenna might have claimed more agency. GUEST BIO Jenna Alfaro, LCSW, CADC, specializes in trauma, substance abuse, and psychotic disorders. Ep 254254 - Dr. Harry J. Aponte - Revolutionizing Therapy by Embracing Human Emotional Struggles and Life Experiences

E

TLDR: Elder wisdom is essential to our revolution. That's it, that's the episode. But my guest deserves the elaboration and accolades of a full summary––as do many of the folks who came before us in work and life. Harry J. Aponte, Ph.D., is a legend for many reasons. However, this OG coalition-builder and advocate for culturally informed care is probably best known in professional psychology circles for developing The Person of the Therapist Training Model, which has become a cornerstone of his professional philosophy. I'm honored to share Harry's fascinating origin story and anecdotes from his amazing career with y'all. GUEST BIO Harry J. Aponte, Ph.D., was born in the United States to Puerto Rican parents, he earned his Master's in Social Work from Fordham University in 1959. His career took a significant turn when he began working with Sal Minuchin at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic, eventually becoming the Clinic's Director. He has delivered lectures across Europe, South America, Korea, and throughout the United States. Additionally, he is the author of several influential books and is currently in private practice. Early in his career, he developed a keen interest in leveraging therapists' personal life experiences to connect with clients, understand their issues, and apply these insights in therapeutic work. This approach, known as Person of the Therapist Training, has become a cornerstone of his professional philosophy. Ep 253253 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Is it Really Possible to Balance Parenting and Practice Ownership? with Rachael Sytsma-Ramos

E

I am the mother of many things: plant babies, doggos, and multiple podcasts. I've also birthed several businesses and quite a few artistic endeavors. But I'm not mama to any little humans. So, when Rachael Sytsma-Ramos, Psy.D, suggested an episode focusing on the dynamics of practice ownership and parenting, I was instantly intrigued. Rachael is mama to two children under five (!!), the founder of Relational Psychology Group, where she also manages a full caseload of 22-24 clients per week beyond typical ownership duties like marketing, bill paying, and supervising. GUEST BIO Rachael Sytsma-Ramos (she/her) is a Clinical Psychologist in the Chicagoland area and mom of 2. Her primary clinical specialties are working with queer and transgender/gender-diverse clients, polyamorous/ethical non-monogamy relationships, and neurodivergent clients. Sprinkle in women's issues, intimate partner violence, and sexual abuse survivors and that's her typical clientele. She practices from a feminist-relational lens and is hell-bent on dismantling systems of oppression with her clients. Ep 252252 - Al Cho - Celebrating Queer Life and Family Through the Lens of Intersectional Identities

E

It's easy to forget that siblings have stories uniquely their own. They may share similar childhood memories as you, but their narratives will differ wildly. Blended families, like Anne's, hold an added layer of complexity. How lucky for us that she and her step-sibling Al Cho, MSW, agreed to record this fascinating chat for family posterity. Their conversation highlights the very best of familial support. It also reminds us that even the most connected kin can't completely insulate us from life's challenges or the healing work that's meant for us. GUEST BIO Al Cho (he/they) is an MSW and a co-investigator on LGBTQIA2+ aging and advocacy in Columbus, Ohio. He develops intergenerational LGBTQIA2+ programming focused on arts & resilience and contributes to advocacy efforts on trans aging in long-term care facilities and creating equitable aging environments for African American older adults. AL would like to extend his heartfelt gratitude to the Age Friendly Innovation Center, Dr. Holly Dabelko-Schoeny, and Christine Happel. Their invaluable support, guidance, and expertise have been instrumental throughout his research process. The Age Friendly Innovation Center has been a beacon of knowledge and innovation, helping to navigate the complexities of aging through advocacy, research, and interventions. Ep 247247 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can a Group Practice Retain Good Clinicians? With Cassandra Greenwald

E

Happy clinicians are vital to a thriving practice, especially since not every therapist is interested in being a sole proprietor. So, how do owners navigate the tricky mechanics of operating a business while providing meaningful group guidance without losing their sh*t? Good question. Enter Cassandra Greenwald, LCSW, CADC, of Rowan Tree Counseling, with heartfelt answers for employees and owners. We poke at some tender spots: an owner's right to privacy vs an employee's desire for transparency, individual ambitions vs collective objectives, and the financial realities of operating within a capitalist economy. GUEST BIO Cassandra Greenwald, LCSW, CADC (she/they) is a therapist, writer maker, relationship builder, and connector first raised on the East Coast, then watered and grown in the picturesque.Pacific Northwest, and currently settled in the great city of Chicago. Ep 245245 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Transparent Should Owners be With Their Employees? With Rowan Tree Counseling Team

E

I totally started this podcast on a whim––but not without a keen understanding of the pain points that group practice owners routinely encounter complain about. I've since realized that vital voices are missing from the conversation: group practice employees. I extended an invitation via the BOPO Chicago Facebook group. Lucky for us, Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC, and Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC, owner and senior therapist, respectively, of Rowan Tree Counseling, answered that call. This convo is juicy, y'all! We explore themes of responsibility, transparency, and intentionality from both sides of the group practice relationship. Our detour into the thorny subject of hierarchies and the urgency that often accompanies their abolishment is one that I didn't anticipate yet totally appreciate. GUEST BIO Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has been working in the mental health field since 2008. She completed graduate training and received a Masters Degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Andie began her career working in residential and community mental health settings, gaining experience working with individuals seeking relief from anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. She's also worked extensively with clients recovering from traumatic experiences. She specializes in working with individuals seeking a greater sense of balance, who want to live a more values-aligned life, and those struggling with non-monogamous and other alternative relationships. Andie is anti-racist, Queer-allied, sex-positive, polyamory-affirming, and kink-knowledgable. Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor and completed graduate training in Clinical Psychology at Roosevelt University in 2019. She has experience working with teens and adults experiencing severe anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders in partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient settings. Nadia has also worked with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and those healing from traumatic experiences. Her approach to therapy is integrative as she pulls from both more directive approaches (CBT, DBT) and client-centered guidance and support to treat anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, trauma, relationship concerns, and self-esteem issues. Nadia is also well-versed in ERP and has found it particularly successful in supporting individuals struggling with OCD. She is a native Russian speaker and can provide therapy in Russian and English. Celebrate our Anne-iversary and Win! We are celebrating Anne Remy's one-year anniversary as co-host of the show. Ep 244244 - Lori Beth Bisbey - A Realistic (and Encouraging!) Timeline for Anyone Healing From Sexual Trauma

E

For the sake of mutual safety, this episode is preceded by a content advisory regarding sexual trauma and minor-attracted persons. Please take care of yourself as you need, even if that means skipping this conversation. Your body belongs to YOU. I open with this power-stance of a statement because I didn't get that message as a child, adolescent, or young adult. In fact, I've only just begun to really grow into that knowledge as I heal from sexual trauma. Here's another a-ha! from this episode: healing takes time. I'm grateful to folks like Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey for repeatedly reminding me of these essentials. She has been a champion of sizzling sex without shame for 35+ years, and her work destigmatizes fetishes, BDSM, and non-monogamy. Lori Beth's healing journey also provides encouragement for survivors of sexual trauma alongside a healthy dose of reality. GUEST BIO Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey (she/her) is a psychologist, accredited advanced GSRD (gender, sex, relationship diversity) therapist, sex & intimacy coach, author, speaker and tv personality currently starring in Open House: The Great Sex Experiment, CH4 in the UK. She has been working with people for the past 35 years helping them to create and sustain their ideal relationships containing sizzling sex without shame. She has a weekly podcast, The A to Z Of Sex® since 2016 and is currently touring the UK speaking about kink, fetish, BDsM, and non-monogamy. Celebrate our Anne-iversary and Win! Ep 243243 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Where Do You Get Help When S— Happens at Your Private Therapy Practice? with Bianka Hardin

E

Who would have thought that practice ownership involved so much feces?! Now that I have your attention, lemme explain. Actually, I'll let my guest, Bianka Hardin, PsyD, explain since it's her story. Bianka owns Centered Therapy Chicago (CTC), a 10-year-old group practice with 20 clinicians on staff. Her hilarious (and gross) tale perfectly illustrates the literal and metaphorical sh*t that practicer owners must deal with. Here's the thing, though: while practice owners do have to take care of a lot, they don't have to do it all. Bianka urges practice owners to consider the true value of their talents and weigh that against the cost of having to take on other tasks. GUEST BIO Bianka Hardin, PsyD., (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and owner of Centered Therapy Chicago, PLLC. She started CTC in 2014 with the mission to help children, adolescents, and adults improve their mental health and quality of life. She has been a trauma therapist for almost 25 years and is actively involved in her continuous learning and growth in this area from a personal and professional lens. She is very interested in cultural, systemic, and intergenerational factors that impact our health and well-being. Celebrate our Anne-iversary and Win! Ep 242242 - Eugene Ellis - Investigating Race and the Gaze of Society in Therapy, The Race Conversation

E

If you're a white therapist, you could quickly tumble down a rabbit hole trying to reconcile all the work that's ours to do regarding power dynamics within our field. There's a detour that we, as white folks, are rarely required to explore: our relationship to whiteness. I'll save you some time by recommending Anne's conversation with Eugene Ellis, the UK-based psychotherapist, speaker, director of the Black, African, and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN), and author of the transformative book The Race Conversation (soon to be republished in the US). "Eugene's "therapist origin story" is a perfect example of white therapists' potential to be active agents of support," explains Anne. This is only possible when we acknowledge our potential to be active agents of hurt. GUEST BIO Eugene Ellis, psychotherapist, writer, and public speaker, has dedicated 20 years as the director and founder of the Black, African, and Asian Therapy Network, specializing in therapeutic work with Black, African, Caribbean, and South Asian individuals. Author of 'The Race Conversation' (2021), he delves into the intersection of race and trauma, non-verbal communication, and navigating oppressive patterns. Co-editor of 'Therapy In Colour' (2023), Eugene contributes to articulating new theoretical perspectives for therapists, both white and of colour, supporting therapy through an intersectional lens. Ep 241241 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Uncertainty, Racism, and Burnout (Community Q&A)

E

Who's ready for a very special call-in episode about practice ownership? Cast your mind back to the heyday of Loveline. I apologize if you're not of that vintage, as that's my only call-in show reference. Are you, Dear Practice Owner, ready to stop chasing unrealistic goals, embody an anti-racist liberation mindset? Are you all set to own your weaknesses and strengths? OK, let's get into this virtual mailbag! I've queued up two juicy questions plus one affirmation that every practice owner should have copied to a desktop sticky or irl fridge notepad. A word about my topic choices first. I chose these specifically because they're often repeated in the practice ownership conversations I've been privy to lately. And, full disclosure: I've agonized over the very same issues. If you have a burning question or a topic that you'd like to hear discussed on this series, email me at [email protected] or send me a DM on Instagram @headheartbiztherapy. Ep 240240 - Shelly Tochluk – A Roadmap for White Folks to Discard Shame, Dismantle Whiteness, and Live an Anti-Racist Life

E

Whiteness is the problem. Many white folks know it; many more don't. Or won't. None of us are at the same point in the journey, yet all of us play a role in dismantling this inherited concept of racial identity. So, how can we nurture discovery, recovery, and anti-racist action without replicating the same judgments, shame, or gaslighting that whiteness thrives on? Shelly Tochluk doesn't have all the answers. Instead, she offers practical advice, road-tested in her own life, to help white folks move beyond the performative and into a genuinely anti-racist life. GUEST BIO Shelly Tochluk is a professor of education at Mount Saint Mary's University–Los Angeles. She is the author of Witnessing Whiteness: The Journey Toward Racial Awareness and Antiracist Action (3rd Edition), Living in the Tension: The Quest for a Spiritualized Racial Justice, and co-author of Being White Today: A Roadmap for a Positive Antiracist Life. Shelly volunteers with AWARE-LA (Alliance of White Anti-Racists Everywhere-Los Angeles), and for 15 years, she co-produced their 4-day institute, Unmasking Whiteness, which leads white people into a deeper understanding of their personal relationship to race, whiteness, and systemic racism. Ep 239239 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Can You Be Both A Lazy Entrepreneur And An Owner Who Shows Up? With Alicia Taverner

E

Being a practice owner isn't *all* bad. The folks who do it well just know how to set industrial-strength boundaries. Not me, but some folks…like Alicia Taverner, LMFT, owner of Rancho Counseling in California. Private practice ownership is Alicia's jam. How is that possible, you ask? There's keeping the practice small and cash-only. While this may astonish some, Alicia shrugs off their incredulity. She also fully recognizes the value of her personal and professional time and has set super clear priorities: work-life balance and ample opportunity to train the therapists in her care. If you have a burning question or a topic that you'd like to hear discussed on this series, email me at [email protected] or send me a DM on Instagram @headheartbiztherapy. GUEST BIO Alicia Taverner is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, #50414, with a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Communications from the University of La Verne, and a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University.
