Ep 84Heal Your Relationship Trauma with Christian Jackson, LPC, LPC-S, The Daddy Issues Expert
Hey friends, I have some news! I've expanded my services and offerings under the The Therapy Show umbrella and am helping therapists escape burnout! How do you ask? Well the details are coming out in my next episode but I'll spill the tea a little bit right now. How do I help you with your burnout? Well many of you are sharing with me that you'd like to cut back on the hours you are seeing clients and spend more time selling your products. But you don't know how to really make that happen. Now I've been there and know this feeling well and I had to make the decision on how to handle it..and you all know one of the ways I handled it was to put my energy and time into creating this podcast and ultimately from the podcast, a passive income stream. But I did it backwards. I created the podcast first with really no clear path to monetization. Instead I should have known what my passive income product was going to be first, create that product first and then base my podcast around that product! Think about that. Having a podcast that specifically drives traffic to your passive income products. A podcast that is evergreen and found by new listeners day after day. Those listeners then head to your website to learn more about your courses or services. Would you be excited about that? New ears finding you every day? New customers purchasing your books, your courses, your webinars..whatever it is you are selling. Podcasting is a perfect way to market your products. Let's face it, that's usually the number one reason why people want to come onto my show. To pitch to my audience. Well, let's create your own podcast where you are the expert, you share the value, you share the advice and help. Then from there they head to your website to purchase your products. Stop trying to get on other peoples podcasts and create your own. And that's what I'm going to teach you very soon. So stay tuned! Christian Jackson is a trauma specialist who works with women who are feeling a lot like she once was: overwhelmed, lost, and full of pride. You will learn practical ways to snap out of the haze of existing and begin learning and using tools to slow down the racing thoughts, get better sleep, examine unhealthy habits, reevaluate your relationships, and set boundaries She is the author of Daddy Issues: How to Detangle from the Sins of Our Fathers and Daddy Issues: How to Detangle From the Sins of Our Fathers Workbook & Journal. She also has a course called, The Grace Academy: Learn the blueprint to healing from relationship traumas. Plus her podcast is coming out soon. She is also a wife and mom with a busy and booming private practice here in Columbia SC. In this episode Christian chats about how she discovered her niche, what daddy issues are and how she serves her audience with value, advice and her expertise. We hope you enjoy this episode! Ep 83Lessons I've Learned In 2021: A Look Back
Have you taken the time to reflect on the lessons you learned in 2021 yet? Or are you still in go go hustle mode and have promised yourself you'll take that time over the holidays? Because I'm usually the one who doesn't do much reflecting until I'm sitting on the beach and looking at the ocean and then the tears come - mainly happy tears of WOW we made it through the year and look at what we've accomplished! But sometimes the tears are for the fact that I still haven't reached some of my goals. Goals I made at the beginning of the year somehow got buried under other priorities or kicked to the side because they felt too big and scary. Well, I promised myself this end of year reflection was going to be different. Instead of realizing what I didn't accomplish and being frustrated with myself, I'm making a plan for moving forward and getting crystal clear on what I need to do to reach those goals. And in this episode, I'm sharing lessons I learned in 2021 and how I plan to take action on going after those dreams. We just returned from our annual family Christmas trip to Edisto Beach, South Carolina. We had such a fun time. The weather was perfect, and we did a lot of fishing. I actually caught fish this year. I have been listening to Neville Goddard's talks on manifesting. I was telling Billy about how to manifest what you desire, and I kid you not I reeled in 2 fish after I stated my manifestation to the universe. Now I don't know if that's too woo woo for you, but it worked! Ok so let's get into this episode. Truth be told these lessons have more to do with my personal life than the podcast however they affect the podcast and my vision for moving forward. (Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning I get a commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links, at NO cost to you. Please read my terms of service and privacy policy for more information.) So let me just dive right on in and share lesson #1. I can't do all the things I want to do and be successful. This is something my husband has been telling me for pretty much all of 2021. I have many many irons in the fire - being a mom, being a wife, my job, the podcast, activewear business, creating continuing education, life coach, professional interviewer - just listing them out has me feeling overwhelmed but also excited. The problem is that I love each one of these roles and it's hard for me to choose where to put my focus and energy some days. Don't get me wrong, my family always comes first yet that's where things start to get even more overwhelming. Our girls started playing club volleyball this year which means they each practice 2 days a week and I'm the main chauffeur around here. So, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday I'm taking them to and from practice. Some days I am able to sit and get work done but I really love watching them practice so more often than not, I get nothing done. Here's why this is a lesson. My highest priority is my family. For me to feel successful in focusing on my family, that means less time to focus on other things, like creating continuing education. It also means less time on social media, which I really don't mind giving up, but that's where I do the majority of my networking and connecting. When I put my family first, I feel successful. One of the reasons this is so important to me is because when I was a kid, my family life was a lot different than the one I've created with my husband. My parents were divorced, and my mom was our main caretaker and many evenings we were on our own while she was in grad school. When you're a kid that's a big deal to not have your mom around, right? We were pretty good kids and didn't get into much trouble and she had us surrounded by people who loved us. Yet I knew that if I had kids, I would be there for them more than my mom was able to. I'm not a helicopter parent, I've seen the issues that come from being one of those, but I am accessible to our girls when they need me. And that to me is success. What does this lesson mean for 2022? I'm unsure. However, I know it means less irons in the fire. So, stay tuned, you know I'll keep you posted. Lesson #2. Self-care is critical but it's hard to do. Raise your hand if you've discussed self-care with your clients this year? Ok now raise your other hand if you've put your own self-care on the back burner. Because I've got both up and I'm waving them wildly! Over the summer I realized I had to get more intentional with my self care. The first thing I did was take Facebook off my phone. That was a self-care gift I didn't know I needed until I did it. I do love connecting and networking with friends and peers, but that algorithm is just too much. I finally realized that it wasn't good for my mood or energy. So, I just deleted it one day. Poof. Gone. I've also cut back on the amount of news I take in too. I also started walking. I sit so much, and my body was starting to revolt. My tight hips and hamstrings were constantly b
Ep 82Side Gigs for Therapists That Have Nothing to Do with Therapy
Why a side gig to begin with? Want an extra stream of income. Want to pursue other passions/interests. Feeling burnt out and wanting to test the waters of what else is out there. I truly love what I do in my day job, however at times I get burnt out and need to switch gears to challenge myself and use other parts of my brain to keep things fresh and interesting. I have 2 stipulations for side gigs. I need to be able to do the gig anywhere and it can't interfere with my family time. Why those 2 things? When I was truly burnt out a few years ago, I finally realized that to stay in a healthier mind set I had to get real about my priorities and values. After a lot of exploration with my life coach, 2 main themes or values emerged: family first or focus and time freedom. By the way, if you're struggling with burn out and want to explore the reasons behind it, I may be able to help you. My life coaching is geared towards helping you live your best life and that means getting crystal clear on how congruent you are living out your highest values. Some people don't even know what their values are. If that's you, let's connect and see if I'm a fit to help you. Schedule a free consultation here. I went on the hunt once for the best side gigs for me now that I knew what I needed in terms of lifestyle. I knew the gigs would appear now that I had my values on the forefront of my mind. The first gig I tried was a part time therapist with an online counseling service. I know I said this was going to be about not doing therapy as a side gig but stay with me as there's more to it. I started taking clients on an online counseling platform in the summer of 2018. I was booked up quickly. I really enjoyed the work and the variety of issues I was working with was really cool and at one point I even thought about moving to full time with them, however that's when I started to come up with the therapy show idea. As much as I liked the online counseling, I couldn't keep it up if I wanted to start the podcast, but before I left, I knew I needed another source of income to help pay for the podcast. So, I went looking! Enter interest and passion #1 - fitness! I love working out and of course to do so, I need activewear. I interviewed at a retail store, and it was a no go because of my values, family and time freedom. As much as I wanted to say YES, I ended up turning it down. But the seed was planted so I got on google and on page 3 or 4 of my search I came across the idea to be a brand rep. I was instantly intrigued and started to do my research and a few days later I signed up and began my home based activewear business. What else gets you excited? Makeup, jewelry, organic healthy household items, health and wellness supplements, books - are there opportunities out there for you to rep a brand and earn some side money? Yes, a lot of these opportunities are direct sales models yet there are plenty of affiliate opportunities out there as well. Before you go poo pooing on these models realize that they are legitimate and can be very lucrative if you have the right mindset and a work ethic. Consistency and perseverance are needed to be successful in these gigs. I love and live in leggings so it's an easy yes for me. People are always asking me where I get my leggings (or tank top or jacket or joggers) from and all I do is refer them to my website. Here's another side gig that I've found to be fun and a way to use the creative side of my brain - Tales.com. Tales is a company that interviews your loved ones and delivers a professionally produced, private podcast episode so you'll have their stories forever. This has been the perfect side gig for me. I love talking with people and hearing their stories, love asking questions and going deeper, love building relationships and giving space for others to share, and I love that family members have their own private podcast. I wish Tales had been around when my grandparents were still here. Why do I love tales? Checks both boxes of family first and time freedom. Tales work around my schedule in setting up the interviews. Once I give them my schedule for the week, they set up the interviews which last about 35-40 minutes. Will you get rich off of tales? Probably not but you will love this gig if you love people and building relationships. And working with tales has made me a better therapist, storyteller, listener and human. I mentioned you may not get rich off of being a tales interviewer but what if it opened up other doors and opportunities for you? Think about that for a little bit - other solutions and possibilities may appear for you. I love that mindset and it's my default these days. The cool part is that Tales is hiring! Here's a short description of the interviewer position: Tales.com is looking for part-time podcast interviewers to speak with our customers about a subject of their choice - most often about their life stories. Interviewers are matched with our customers to conduct remote

S1 Ep 59The Headless Way With Richard Lang
Richard first saw who he really was in 1970, in a workshop with Douglas Harding, author of On Having No Head. Since then he has continued exploring and sharing this direct way of awakening, leading hundreds of workshops around the world. Richard is co-ordinator of the Shollond Trust, a UK charity founded to share the philosophy and practical awareness exercises or the experiments that Douglas Harding created. Richard's aim is to share the experience and meaning of who we really are as widely as possible. My husband, Billy, joins me on this interview as he is the one who has turned me on to this self exploration process. We had such a wonderful chat with Richard on how he found the Headless Way. He walks us through a few experiments on helping us see who we really are and what Billy and I have discovered is this truth: once you see what you are at center, then getting into the habit of living consciously from this boundless, timeless space can be effortless. S1 Ep 57Matt Fiddes, Martial Artist & Michael Jackson's Personal Bodyguard, On Success, Business, Mindset & Helping Others Achieve Their Goals
If you live in the US you may never have heard of Matt Fiddes, but if you're anywhere else, he may just be a household name. Matt Fiddes is one of the most respected experts in the international world of martial arts and fitness. Matt's achievements have seen him honoured at the highest level, after being inducted into the UK Martial Arts Hall of Fame and presented with the prestigious 'Martial Arts Superstar Award'. He first discovered a talent for self-defense at seven after being bullied at school. Five years later he had already won his Black Belt with a determination and drive that was to mark him out as a special talent. Leaving school at sixteen with no qualifications he opened the first Matt Fiddes Martial Arts School in his hometown of Barnstaple, North Devon, with just £100. Matt's unique training programs are designed for both children and adults and have proved to be a massive success with over 600 training schools across the UK and Europe including Ireland, Germany, Holland, Australia and South Africa. He is a 7th Degree Black Belt Master in Tae Kwon Do and holds Black Belts in Kickboxing and Kung Fu is now one of the most in-demand personal trainers thanks to front covers and interviews in newspapers and magazines worldwide. He has numerous celebrity clientele including actors, supermodels and singers. Undoubtedly Matt's biggest client was superstar Michael Jackson. Introduced to Matt by his close friend Uri Geller, Matt was Michael's personal UK bodyguard for over a decade before his tragic death in June 2009. Today, he now runs a multi-million pound, international martial arts franchise which is the world's biggest martial arts brand in the world. Matt sits on the board of advisors for the Worldwide Martial Arts Teachers Association (MATA) along with the industry's most admired teachers. Matt is dedicated to building his martial arts schools where he can help improve the fitness and life skills of young people. Matt is married to South African singer Moniqe Fiddes and they live in Wiltshire with their children. I met Matt through social media. I think one of my facebook lives floated across his feed? I had no idea who he was or what he did, just knew he was a nice guy with a lot of positivity and a love for helping others reach their goals So I'm excited to have him on the show and hope you enjoy hearing a little bit about Micheal Jackson and gain some insight into his personal life that you may not know. S1 Ep 52Strength At Any Age With Dani Shugart
Before I jump into the intro for this episode, I wanted to share something that's been brewing within me for a while. When I began podcasting, I wanted to focus on talk therapy topics and issues yet I'm also really passionate about another topic. And that is helping women live their best lives as they move into midlife. You may or may not know that when I hit 40, that's when I made the decision to start living my life differently. So for the past 7 years I've worked to live more authentically and congruentally. And now I want to start bringing this information to the podcast! I'm lining up guests that will not only inspire you to see mid life differently but will also bring you the know how to do so. I'm unsure yet if i will start a whole new podcast or rebrand this one. Podcasts are a lot of work and it's just me right now behind the scenes (well except for my audio engineer and editor, Laura and my website developer, Michael) so creating and producing 2 separate podcasts feels overwhelming yet also at the same time it feels possible. Right now I'm just hanging out in the land of possibilities. I hope you stay tuned to see and hear the upcoming shifts in my podcast world! Here's my first shift and I'm so excited to share this week's interview with you all. It's the FIRST MidLife Magic podcast episode! I titled it Strength At Any Age With Dani Shugart for a few reasons: Number one, I truly believe that you can acquire strength at any age. While in this episode we are talking about strength gained in the weight room, we also talk about how finding the weight room has given us both self confidence and physical and mental strength, two things my guest and I both were looking for in our younger years. And finding the weights helped us tremendously in these areas. Number two, research has shown us that there are incredible benefits of building muscle such as improving balance, reducing the likelihood of falls, improving blood-sugar control, and improving sleep and mental health. The average person starts losing muscle as early as age 25. And From 40 to 70 years old, muscle loss averages 8 percent per decade and then accelerates to 15 percent after age 70. Our eventual physical decline is inevitable, but the more muscle we have when our bodies start rapidly breaking down, the longer we can last with our physical function. I often get asked why I'm so crazy about telling people to hit the weight room. It's not because i want to look good naked, that's a byproduct of wanting to increase my confidence and put off my physical decline as long as possible! I want longevity and quality of life!! And when I decided I wanted to talk about this on my first episode of Midlife Magic, I headed straight to my friend Dani Shugart. Dani Shugart is an editor for T-Nation.com, a lifetime natural lifter, and co-host of the Fit Pants podcast. Dani shares her story on finding the weight room, how progress in the weight room has built her confidence, why consistency and accountability are keys to reaching your goals, how to get into fitness if you're brand new as well as how to get back into fitness if you've fallen out. Plus we talk about tips for growing muscle in midlife, why assessing your efforts for effectiveness is important, and reassessing your efforts if it's not getting you to your goals. Listen to the Fit Pants podcast here. Connect with Dani on Instagram. We hope you enjoy this episode! This episode is brought to you by my favorite activewear line, Zyia Active. S1 Ep 44Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy with Eric Blommel
I was super curious to learn more about this week's topic, Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy. So I went on the hunt for the research as well as someone I could chat with about what this looks like in session. According to the article abstract for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP): Patient Demographics, Clinical Data and Outcomes in Three Large Practices Administering Ketamine with Psychotherapy in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, "Currently, ketamine is the only legal psychedelic medicine available to mental health providers for the treatment of emotional suffering. Over the past several years, ketamine has come into psychiatric use as an intervention for treatment resistant depression (TRD), administered intravenously without a psychotherapeutic component. In these settings, ketamine's psychedelic effects are viewed as undesirable "side effects." In contrast, we believe ketamine can benefit patients with a wide variety of diagnoses when administered with psychotherapy and using its psychedelic properties without need for intravenous (IV) access. Its proven safety over decades of use makes it ideal for office and supervised at-home use. The unique experience that ketamine facilitates with its biological, experiential, and psychological impacts has been tailored to optimize office-based treatment evolving into a method that we call Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). This article is the first to explore KAP within an analytical framework examining three distinct practices that use similar methods. Here, we present demographic and outcome data from 235 patients. Our findings suggest that KAP is an effective method for decreasing depression and anxiety in a private practice setting, especially for older patients and those with severe symptom burden." Link to artice: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30917760 This week's guest, Eric Blommel, discusses how ketamine assisted psychotherapy may accelerate the process of growth and change for people dealing with treatment resistant depression, ptsd, anxiety and more. He shares how he works with medication prescribers, the parameters he puts in place with his patients, and how psychedelics may act as brain reboot. It's such an interesting interview and we hope you find it helpful. Learn more about Eric here: https://improvecounseling.com/ Eric J. Blommel lives in Highlands Ranch, Colorado and sees clients in his office in nearby Littleton, as well as via telehealth. Originally from the Chicago area, Eric has lived in Colorado since 1993, and some say that makes him an honorary native. Just before moving to Colorado, he obtained his BA in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. After working for a number of years in the information technology field, Eric decided to change careers and earned his MA in Counseling from the University of Colorado Denver in 2016. When asked why he changed careers, Eric points out that he himself has been helped substantially by counseling, and now he enjoys the honor and privilege of giving back some of what he received. Eric sees clients under his business name,Improve Counseling LLC. He works with individuals, groups, couples, partners, and families, specializing primarily in healing relationships and trauma, particularly where those two intersect. S1 Ep 41Therapist Self Care During A Pandemic: How are YOU doing?
While you are checking in with your clients, are you checking in with yourself? That was the question I was recently asked by a colleague and it got me thinking about our profession and peers. As therapists we preach it all the time, right? Yet are we actually walking the walk? Especially during times like these when our clients may need a little more from us. How are we managing ourselves? Our self care? Our mindset? I gathered 3 peers and asked them to weigh in on this topic. I learned a lot while talking with them and hope you find this bonus episode helpful as you navigate being a helping professional during a pandemic. We hope you enjoy this episode! S1 Ep 40A New Messaging Based Therapy App With Dr. Bill Hudenko
Before I tell you about what's to come in this episode, I want to give Sindee Gozansky a huge thank you for connecting me with today's guest. If you don't know Sindee, she is a therapist in Portland Maine and she's also the founder of The Whole Therapist which is an online community to help therapists deal with the unique issues we face in work and life. When you join The Whole Therapist Community, you connect with other therapists to support your practice and your lifestyle through lessons, resources, coaching, Q&A and discussions. It's an amazing group and I hope you check it out! So Sindee connected me with today's guest, Dr. Bill Hudenko who is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at Dartmouth College, an Adjunct Assistant Professor of clinical psychology at Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine, the Chief Executive Officer of Voi, Inc., and the President of Trusst Health Inc. A few years ago Dr. Hudenko noticed a proliferation of telehealth platforms that were beginning to use messaging-based intervention to help people with mental illness. After reviewing the literature, he realized that there was almost no information about the efficacy of this method of intervention. Subsequently, along with his colleagues at the University of Washington and the University of Pennsylvania, they received funding from NiMH to conduct a randomized controlled trial of messaging-based psychotherapy for those with serious mental illness. They trained about 8 clinicians, worked with around 40 patients in the treatment arm of the intervention, and monitored over 12,000 messages in the study. Last year they completed the study and revealed improvement across almost every metric including a reduction in depression, anxiety, and even psychosis. Following this study, he decided that the timing was right to commercialize a messaging-based intervention that could dramatically improve affordability and accessibility of mental healthcare while increasing therapist revenue. They launched Trusst just last year and in the first 6 months they expanded to over 23 states! They train all of their clinicians with their NiMH-backed approach, but they also allow an incredible amount of flexibility for clinicians to conduct treatment in the way they think is best. Also, unlike their competitors, they allow clinicians to onboard their own existing patients or to shift back and forth between in-person and remote care. And with so many of our peers looking for ways to continue providing therapy and counseling services in this new normal, Bill's company, Trusst, is one more tool we can utilize to help our patients and clients continue to receive care while at a physical distance. Listen in to hear all about his messaging therapy research findings, how therapists are using the platform, and how to become a provider. Trusst is on a mission to transform the delivery of mental healthcare. We hope you'll join us in making care more accessible, affordable and practical for everyone involved. They are currently looking to bring on more providers. And they are giving you one week FREE, sign up for 1 free week of message therapy with the code FREE1W.
