Ep 9191: Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer?
EHow are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives? Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn't put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study's limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative. Today I'm sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can't benefit from estrogen therapy. Let's try not to be afraid of estrogen - it's not a bad thing. Episode Highlights Telling women across the board not to go on hormones is a misogynistic statement What you need to know about the Women's Health Initiative study The problem with how the media reported the results of the WHI study Positive outcomes of hormone therapy identified in the study Limitations of the WHI Considerations for women with a history of breast cancer What the studies showed about the benefits for osteoporosis prevention The relationship between estrogen therapy and increased risk of dementia and stroke Detoxifying estrogen in your body My confession for estrogen replacement Alternatives to estradiol for menopause symptoms Resources Dr. Tassone's Practice | Tassone Advanced Gynecology Dr. Tassone's Book | The Hormone Balance Bible Hormone Archetype Quiz | Hormonal Mapping System Medical Disclaimer This podcast and website represent the opinions of Dr. Shawn Tassone and his guests. Ep 8484: Washington Post and the Misogynistic Politicization of Birth Control
E"Women are getting off birth control amid misinformation explosion." - a very problematic article in the Washington Post last week. Written by two people with no medical background, the article is highly politicized, filled with anecdotal evidence, and dismissive of women's lived experiences with birth control. Once I saw it, I had to address it here on the podcast because it's disgusting. Birth control is obviously not the ultimate evil, but it's also not the ultimate panacea. It should not be prescribed for problems outside of birth control until the underlying factors have been explored. Anything else is a disservice to our patients and is done for the convenience of the prescribing physician. In this episode, I'm giving you my take and the facts on everything written. I want you to read this article, see the political division that's being created, and see the way they've stopped women from responding to what they've written. Enjoy the episode. Highlights The risk of bias and the authors' lack of medical background Misrepresentation of the genuine symptoms some women experience while taking birth control The political implications threaded throughout the article Why I believe it's misogynistic and hypocritical that the comments were turned off on the Instagram post about this article The reach of social media influencers and their impact on birth control decisions Potential side effects of birth control and the experiences of individuals who have faced complications How social media might be shaping perceptions and decisions related to birth control methods Bias in the medical community's response to the side effects of HRT versus the pill How this article is promoting political division Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 8383: North American Menopause Society (NAMS) - Are You Listening?????
"If you're already a board-certified OBGYN, why would you pay to become NAMS certified?" Many physicians turn to the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) for guidance on menopause-related issues. Every few years, they release a position statement outlining their stance on relevant treatment options, and lately, I've been getting a lot of questions about their recent statements. For the next couple of episodes, I'll be doing a deep dive into different aspects of NAMS and their position statements. Today, I'm starting by critically examining their 2022 hormone therapy position statement and 2023 nonhormone therapy position statement. In this conversation, I discuss why I question their funding, their focus on certain symptoms, their positions on the use of compounded bioidentical hormone therapy, my skepticism about NAMS certification, and more. Enjoy the episode! Highlights Why I'm talking about NAMS The potential influence of big pharma as the primary funding source for NAMS Highlights from NAMS' 2022 Hormone Therapy Position Statement The problem with relying heavily on the Women's Health Initiative and the emphasis on addressing a few specific symptoms NAMS' stance on compounded bioidentical hormone therapy and why I disagree with their assessment Skin and hair effects of estrogen therapy The problem with NAMS' definition of quality of life How hormone replacement therapy affects common menopause symptoms and the risk of cardiovascular disease Risks and benefits of hormone therapy and different types of cancer Discussion of financial relationships and conflicts of interest within NAMS NAMS 2023 nonhormone therapy position statement Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 8181: Celebrity Women Selling You Stuff: Beware the Celebrity Trap
EIf you see a celebrity partnering with a celebrity physician for a product, I'm here to tell you it won't help. It's a money grab. Menopause is getting a makeover, and menopausal women are spending a lot of money. It's a multi-billion dollar industry, and celebrities in their mid to late 40s and 50s are leveraging their menopause experiences into cash grabs. By sharing their stories and teaming up with doctors - who may or may not be medical professionals - they're leading women to believe that their proprietary supplement formula is the miracle that saved them from the difficulties of menopause. I'm so sick and tired of seeing these ads, and today, I want to expose this disturbing trend. I'm talking about Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, and Drew Barrymore's entry into the menopause product space, how they use emotional appeals and unproven claims to sell their products, why it's crucial to use evidence-based recommendations, red flags that should trigger your skepticism, where you can find real help, and more. Today, I'm doing a quick but deeper dive to clear up any confusion about estradiol, progesterone, ethinylestradiol, and micronized progesterone and why I recommend bioidentical hormones. Whether it's Ozempic, Wegovy, or Rybelsus, these antidiabetic medications have skyrocketed in popularity for the incredible weight loss results they can bring. There have even been shortages for the past couple of months! On the flip side, critics point out that around 85% of patients taking semaglutide gain most of the lost weight back if they stop cold turkey. Semaglutide really works, and it can be life-changing for many people. But like anything else, there are always side effects and risks. In this episode, I'm giving you a down and dirty on semaglutide, why I've used it in my clinic, what you need to know before taking this medication, and more. Ep 7777: Hormone Testing 101
Confession: You are being lied to about hormone testing, and, in many cases, you're either not being tested enough or being tested way too much. There are many "hormone experts" out there, and the information they share is often wildly contradictory. From providers who say hormone imbalance doesn't exist to those who only want to see results from a specific day of your cycle, how do you filter out the valuable insights from the noise? When it comes to your hormones, I always say, "test, don't guess." Today I'm sharing everything you need to know about hormone testing so you can be empowered when you go to your OBGYN, naturopath, or whichever provider you prefer to see. We're talking about the pros and cons of different hormone tests, how you can determine which tests to ask for, details about how testing is done, how to spot red flags, and more. Highlights Why a rigid approach to testing doesn't make sense The right time to test your hormones Why hormone testing is crucial Red flags that suggest your provider isn't a hormone expert The problem with saliva testing and the cases where it's worth it Pros and cons of serum/blood testing Hormones and proteins I prefer to check through serum testing How DUTCH tests work Advantages and disadvantages of urine testing Why I believe DUTCH tests are overused Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 7676: Estriol Face Creams: The New Scams and Old False Claims
E"I think it's scammy. I think it's dangerous. And I'm saddened that many women are being lied to about these products." Have you seen those ads on social media for menopause or perimenopause supplements and creams that claim that they will fix all your woes? None of these products have a shred of proof behind their dramatic claims, and many of them are backed by huge celebrities promoting them like they're a godsend for women. The sad thing to me is that, ultimately, they're spreading misinformation. Today, I'm talking all about these scammy topical face creams, from those promoting the fact that they have estrogen in them to wild yam creams and those that are over the counter while exposing women to prescription-strength progesterone. As a consumer, be cautious, seek medical advice, and opt for evidence-based skincare and nutritional products. As always, if you feel like you're being gaslit by the medical community, keep searching because there are doctors like me out there who want to help you feel better. Enjoy the episode! Highlights Deceptive marketing tactics used by companies promoting menopausal and perimenopausal supplements Potential dangers associated with the use of these products What you need to know about estriol The confusing meaning behind the term "research-backed" Why wild yam creams are one of the biggest scams in women's health What research tells us about the effectiveness of topical progesterone creams The hidden dangers of using over-the-counter progesterone creams marketed as moisturizers Calling out the predatory tactics used by these companies What you can safely do to feel better and look better Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 7575: MY KIDS: Third Child Angelo - Covid, Finance, and the Myth of Sisyphus
Welcome back to the final installment of my special series of interviews with my kids. So far, you've heard from my firstborn, Hannah, my eldest son, Hunter, and my youngest, Anthony. Today, I'm chatting with my thirdborn, Angelo. Angelo and I share very similar birthdays - only four days apart - and he's the one who's most like me emotionally. He was born about five weeks early, right before 9/11, and was the only one of my children who was breech. Unlike his older siblings, I never know what to expect from Angelo in terms of his school and career journey, and it's always interesting to see where he ends up. In this episode, Angelo and I talk about his early days, experiences in private school, developing self-awareness and empathy, how his academic outlook has changed between high school and college, his career aspirations, how he developed his philosophical outlook, and more. Thanks for your support, and enjoy the episode! Highlights The unique circumstances around Angelo's birth Early childhood memories in Tucson What it was like to transition to a new school in the sixth grade in Austin Benefits and drawbacks of attending a private school versus a public school How your socioeconomic background influences your perspective on relationships and interactions with people from different walks of life The impact of distractions and unhealthy coping mechanisms on Angelo's academic performance in high school What it was like to have senior year in high school and first year of college during the peak of the pandemic The challenges and adjustments in adapting to the environment as an intern at Charles Schwab Angelo's philosophical outlook on life Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 7474: Youngest Child - Navigating Gen Z with a Positive Attitude
EWelcome back to part three of my special series of interviews with my kids. So far, you've heard from my firstborn, Hannah, and my eldest son, Hunter, and today we're jumping to my youngest, Anthony. Anthony was born via C-section on November 22 in Tucson, Arizona. Named after his great-great-grandfather, Antonio, his name is in many middle names and first names throughout my family. As my youngest, I often joke about him being my favorite, but one of the things I am most proud of him for is his ability to turn difficult situations into opportunities for growth and leadership. Never one to mindlessly follow the pack, I am confident he will be super successful, and I'm excited to see what he does. In this conversation, Anthony and I talk about his childhood, the experience of moving to a new city and feeling behind in school, how sports helped him to overcome his concerns about his height, struggles, and triumphs in football and theater, Anthony's college experiences at Blinn, his future career aspirations, and more. Thanks for your support, and enjoy the episode! Highlights The perks of being the youngest in a family of four kids Anthony's experience of feeling behind starting at a new school in third grade after moving to Austin How sports helped Anthony overcome his doubts about being smaller The transformative experience Anthony had over his years on his high school football team Embracing a love of theater and music The challenges of balancing multiple activities and interests at the same time Anthony's initial disappointment and ultimate decision to attend the Texas A&M-Blinn TEAM Program The experience of pledging a fraternity and finding your place in college Anthony's career aspirations Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 7373: Hormone Pellets for Women - Misogyny and Malpractice in Women's Health
I can't bring myself emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically to use hormone pellets with my patients. Hormone pellets are tiny pellets containing hormones and medications inserted under your skin and replaced every three to six months. In my clinic, many unhappy patients come to me with complications from pellets. Outside of my clinical experience, I also tried pellets myself a few years ago, which was the worst experience of my life. Looking at the science, there are much better methods of getting bioidentical hormones, such as topical creams and sublingual troches, and they don't come with the downsides of hormone pellets. Today I'm sharing the top ten reasons why I'm a pellet anarchist, misleading ways that pellets are marketed, the things women need to know before using pellets, and what to do if you've had pellets and want to make a change. Highlights How hormone pellets work Pitfall #1: They're expensive Pitfall #2: Hormone levels are too high Pitfall #3: It's a surgical procedure Pitfall #4: Once they're in, they don't come out Pitfall #5: You're subjected to minor surgery every 3-6 months Pitfall #6: Irregular absorption rates Pitfall #7: It's a cash cow for providers Pitfall #8: Who's inserting them? Pitfall #9: It's a club Pitfall #10: You're a number What you can do if you've had pellets and you want to make a change Bioidentical hormones versus synthetic hormones This episode is sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. We're back for part two of this special series of interviews with my kids. Last week, you heard from my oldest- and only daughter - Hannah, and today, I'm talking to my oldest son, Hunter. Hunter is 28, and the only one of my children who decided to go into medicine, and he's currently in medical school. Hunter was born in Oklahoma City during the third year of my residency in 1996. Probably the most adaptable of the four, his mother and I divorced when he was young, and later, in the sixth grade, he came to live with me and his stepmom, Katie. In this conversation, Hunter and I talk about his childhood and education, philosophical views on free will, Hunter's decision to pursue medicine, his aspirations to specialize in psychiatry, and more. I'm so thankful to Hunter for having this conversation, and I'm so proud of him for his accomplishments and resilience. Thanks for your support, and enjoy the episode! Highlights Hunter's memories of living in Oklahoma and Arizona during his childhood Moving to Austin during high school and Hunter's adaptability to new environments Hunter's interest in studying consciousness and his goal of going to medical school. Going into the interview, Hannah told me that no questions were off the table, and we had an open conversation on everything from her earliest childhood memories to her divorce and weight loss journey. Ep 7070: Hormone Harmony for Younger Women – Balancing Hormones Without Taking Hormones
"Hormone balance is the catchphrase for younger women." - James Frame When you're looking at perimenopause and post-menopause, the goal is to stop the hormone fluctuations or to replace hormones that have been lost. For younger women, the focus is reinvigorating the biofeedback mechanism to balance and regulate their hormone production. Unfortunately, being younger means that many doctors are more likely to simply put them on birth control to mask any period problems they're experiencing without investigating the root cause. That can have knock-on effects that make it harder to regain balance as they age. So, what can you do to support your hormones and relieve period problems if you don't want to be on hormonal birth control? Today, I'm joined by James Frame and Dr. Deanna Minich from Symphony Natural Health. James and Deanna are discussing the importance of understanding the body's natural cycle, the potential adverse effects of birth control pills, the uses of maca and the properties of its different phenotypes, the importance of hormone balance for conception and healthy pregnancy, the benefits of Femmenessence for younger women, and more. Enjoy the episode! Highlights How maca can help younger women by addressing the root causes of their symptoms Breaking the stigma around the menstrual cycle The benefits of women being more open about their cycles and seeking help earlier Why it's essential to have a regular menstrual cycle Variations in lipids and nutrients throughout your menstrual cycle The role of hormone metabolism and detoxification How environmental contaminants impact the endocrine system and reproductive health Using Femmenessence (https://femmenessence.com/) to detoxify and alleviate menstrual disturbances Getting your body into its best state for preconception health Herbs that are used for cycle regulation How the Femmenessence formulations differ for younger women and post-menopausal women How different maca phenotypes have different physiological effects on the body Recommendations on the use of Femmenessence during pregnancy and breastfeeding Where to start if you're having problems with your period My experience with endometriosis patients using Femmenessence This episode is sponsored by Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 6969: MASTERCLASS: Fitness and Hormonal Harmony with Lacey Dunn
"A majority of people are overfed but undernourished - eating a lot of calories but not consuming essential nutrients." - Lacey Dunn When it comes to hormones, diet, and lifestyle are huge contributing factors that are often downplayed in conventional medicine. The chronic stress and inadequate nutrition many of us experience create signals in our bodies that can wreak havoc on hormone production. That's why it's crucial to drill down to the root causes rather than simply treating the symptoms. Today, I'm joined by functional medicine dietitian Lacey Dunn (https://upliftfitnutrition.com/)to talk about how fitness and nutrition can help you feel and look your best. Enjoy the episode! Highlights Chronic stress as the key factor for most women with hormone issues Figuring out your target protein intake Lacey's advice for women who feel intimidated or overwhelmed about starting the gym What you'll learn in The Women's Guide to Hormonal Harmony Navigating food guilting, especially around the holidays Understanding macros and their impact on body composition The struggle to get enough fiber and the right carbs What to consider about different types of carbs The challenges Lacey experienced with her supplement company Lacey's resources and how you can work with Lacey Balancing cardio and muscle-building exercises The role of muscle in longevity and the benefits of walking This episode is sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 6868: Fertility and the SHINES Protocol - The Info You NEEDED
Infertility is defined as 12 months of trying regularly without conception occurring. Although it's not common, it happens to many couples, and it can be completely devastating when it does. With no known causes of infertility, the conception rate is about 85%, which means about 15% of couples fall within that definition. Over my career, I've sat with hundreds of women and couples who have experienced this. In today's episode, I'm talking about what you can do to optimize your fertility and support your reproductive health. We're talking about the various causes of infertility, the importance of considering both male and female factors, common fertility myths, the role of endocrine disorders, lifestyle factors, environmental influences, products, and supplements for fertility support, and more. Enjoy the episode! Highlights The prevalence of infertility and how it's defined from a medical perspective Factors that can contribute to fertility issues for both men and women Basic guidelines for when to seek medical help Importance of a team approach and seeking help from specialists The primary testing approach for males and females How age can affect fertility Debunking the myth of producing more eggs with age Lifestyle and environmental factors that can affect ovulation Structural problems of the reproductive system The link between infertility and endometriosis Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian insufficiency, and autoimmune disorders Tests that should be included in a fertility workup Lifestyle changes for optimizing your fertility What should be included in a full panel for hormone analysis The benefits of spiritual practices and support groups Nutrition, exercise, and weight management options that support your fertility The problem with most of the prenatal supplements on the market Essential supplements for fertility and pregnancy Why I recommend Needed supplements This episode is sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 6666: The Hormone Balance Bible and The SHINES Protocol
"Your normal is different than everybody else's." There's so much misinformation out there about hormones. The misunderstanding of the Women's Health Initiative findings did massive damage to women's health. It basically ruined an entire generation of physicians who now buy into the false narrative on the dangers of hormone replacement. Today I'm doing a review episode all about my book, The Hormone Balance Bible. I wrote the book not for you to read from cover to cover but so that you can look at the relevant sections as you go through certain stages of your life. In The Hormone Balance Bible, I break down the 12 hormonal archetypes and what to do to start the healing journey for each one. For this episode, I'm talking about how you can start figuring out which archetype you are, the characteristics of each type, symptoms you might be noticing, the kinds of women I see in my practice for each archetype, and more. Enjoy the episode! Highlights What I'm sharing today about the Hormone Balance Bible The concept and creation of the Hormone Balance Bible How I came up with the twelve hormonal archetypes Why it was important to me to include processes with which women could heal themselves Archetype #1: The Queen - Estrogen Dominance Archetype #2: The Unbalanced Heroine - Progesterone Deficiency Archetype #3: The Mother - High Estrogen, Low Progesterone Archetype #4: The Wise Woman - Menopause Archetype #5: The Workaholic - Excess Cortisol Archetype #6: The Saboteur - Low Cortisol Archetype #7: The Nun - Low Testosterone Archetype #8: The Warrior - High Testosterone Archetype #9: The Underdog - Hypothyroidism/Subclinical Hypothyroidism Archetype #10: The Overachiever - Hyperthyroidism Archetype #11: The Chairwoman - Estrogen Dominance + Excess Cortisol Archetype #12: The Philosopher The medical system's poor treatment of menopausal women This episode is sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Ep 6565: Breasts and Iodine: Violet Daily and Beautiful Breasts
The first step to good breast health is having an intimate relationship with your breasts. Since the person themself catches most breast abnormalities, you are in a powerful position to protect them. In my practice, I see a lot of women with breast pain for various reasons, from hormone replacement to premenstrual syndrome. It can range from mild discomfort to pain that's interrupting their lives, and it's not something you should be forced to live with. Today, I'm joined by Dianne Wist, CEO of Violet, a unique, patented breast health supplement that relieves monthly breast discomfort and tenderness. As a physician, I prefer heavily research-backed products that focus on what they do well instead of trying to throw in everything but the kitchen sink. That's one of the main reasons I recommend Violet so much to my patients. Highlights The research behind Violet and its proven track record The connection between iodine deficiency and breast tenderness Why iodine is essential for hormone function and overall health Use cases of Violet for a variety of women's health issues Challenges with obtaining adequate iodine levels through diet alone Why molecular iodine is preferred over other forms Groups of people who are at higher risk of iodine deficiency Recommended use of Violet for cyclical breast pain The relationship between hormone replacement and breast tenderness Violet as a solution for breast tenderness for hormone replacement patients The role of selenium in Violet Recommendations for people with thyroid conditions The company and team behind Violet Improving your breast health awareness Why self-examination is crucial Connect with Dianne Wist & Violet Dianne Wist on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/diannewist/ Violet Website https://VioletDaily.com/ Violet on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/violetdailypill/ This episode is sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that.
