Directly prior to the creation of Gold Village Entertainment, Goldberg had been the CEO of Air America Radio from 2005 until mid-2006. Goldberg formed the independent label Artemis Records in 1999 and ran the company until January of 2005. Prior to forming Artemis and prior to the acquisition of Polygram by Universal in 1998, Goldberg was Chairman and CEO of the Mercury Records Group, which was the number one U.S. label group in terms of market share in 1998. The Mercury Records Group included music from virtually all major genres; pop, R&B, hip-hop, country, jazz and rock and roll via its labels Def Jam, Mercury, Mercury Nashville, Motown, Verve, and Deutsche Gramophone, all of which reported to and were supervised by Goldberg. Before joining Mercury, Goldberg was Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Records in 1995, during which time Warner Bros. was the number one U.S. record label. In 1993-94, he was President of Atlantic Records, also a division of the Warner Music Group, which likewise attained the number one ranking among U.S. companies during Goldberg’s tenure. Earlier in his career, Goldberg formed and co-owned Modern Records, which released Stevie Nicks’ solo albums including her number one album “Bella Donna.” Prior to that, Goldberg was Vice-President of Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song Records and worked with the band from 1973 through 1975. In 1980, Goldberg co-produced and co-directed the rock documentary feature, “No Nukes,” starring Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and Jackson Browne, among others. Coming in at Number 2 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums is the 1991 release from Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger. The guest host this ep is Kevin Williams from the In Obscuria podcast. Kevin brings his very unique expertise to the show as he and Bakko relive this Grunge masterpiece. Badmotorfinger is the third studio album by American rock band Soundgarden, released on September 24, 1991, through A&M Records. Soundgarden began the recording sessions for the album with new bassist Ben Shepherd in the spring of 1991. The album maintained the band's heavy metal sound while featuring an increased focus on songwriting as compared with the band's previous releases. Some bonus coverage. Bakko talks with the engineer of Pearl Jam Ten, Dave Hillis. Dave has plenty of amazing anecdotes from the making of one of the biggest records in Grunge and Rock music in general. Dave Hillis started his career as a 17 year old guitarist for the legendary thrash metal band "MACE." In the mid 80's, they released two LP's on Enigma Records in the US and Blackdragon Records in Europe. They were featured on Metalblade Records, "Metal Massacre V"and recognized in the "Thrash-Metal Encyclopedia" and fanzines around the world, as a pioneering force in heavy metal. To this day, there is still a huge following of this pioneering band. Led by Dave's furious guitar work, they charted in the UK and Japan. Mace later toured with Slayer, Anthrax, Raven, Death Angel, and Testament. Dave spent ten years as Chief Engineer, along side legendary producer Rick Parashar, at Seattle's famed London Bridge Studios, during the birth of the Grunge Era. Dave worked as the Engineer on Pearl Jam's debut album "Ten" , Assistant Engineer on the Self Titled "Mother Love Bone" album, the movie soundtrack for "Singles", Alice in Chains, Blind Melon, The Seattle Symphony, Love On Ice, and many others. As the years went by, developed his own producing and engineering skills and continued to work with multiple major label artists. During this time he co-produced, with Greg Dulli, The Afghan Whigs' standout farewell single "66" , on the "1965 " LP and the Twilight Singers "She Loves You" record. Dave also continued to create and record his own music. Dave founded the alternative rock group, "Sybil Vane" , and was the guitarist and song writer. Sybil Vane was signed with both Polydor Records and Island Records. Their song "Sorry" was featured in the movie "Empire Records" , starring actress Liv Tyler. In 2005, Dave founded, produced, mixed and engineered the Shoegaze group "Thee Heavenly Music Association" (Rehash Records US, Fierce Panda Records UK) , to much critical acclaim, where he also served as the group's guitarist and songwriter. During this time, Dave also co-produced the Kevin Martin (Candlebox) solo record "The Possibility Of Being" on Gold Circle Entertainment and worked with comedian, Denis Leary on his live album. Dave continued playing and was hired as a live guitarist for Duff McKagen's (Guns and Roses) band "Loaded". While living in London, Dave worked with multi platinum artist James Blunt, on his writing demos for his hugely successful "Back to Bedlam" album, which included "You're Beautiful" and, "Good Bye My Lover". Dave is also credited with working on Britpop star, Chris Gentry's (Menswear) solo recordings. In 2011, Dave opened Starlodge Studios in the SODO neighborhood of Seattle; a private mix and overdub room featuring vintage and modern recording tools and his beloved AMPEX 1/2" tape Machine for analog magic. Most recently, Dave has crossed over to house and electronic music, with his alter-ego Lo-Rez. Lo-Rez has received critical acclaim and has been featured on major motion film soundtracks. The album "Infinity", has been remastered and re-released in 2019. Dave currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his wife and daughter. Coming in at No. 3 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge albums is the debut record from Pearl Jam, Ten. Joining the program this week, from Pods & Sods, Craig Smith. Craig and Bakko get into all the details of this seminal Grunge classic. Ten is the debut studio album by American rock band Pearl Jam, released on August 27, 1991, through Epic Records. Following the dissolution of their previous band Mother Love Bone in 1990, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard began rehearsing with guitarist Mike McCready. The group recorded a five-song instrumental demo tape with Matt Cameron on drums. Copies of the demo were eventually given to drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist Eddie Vedder, both of whom were invited to audition for the band in Seattle. In this bonus ep Bakko chats with the producer of Hole's record, Live Through This, Paul Q. Kolderie. Paul Q. Kolderie is an American record producer, engineer, and mixer. He has worked with Pixies, Radiohead, Orangutang, Hole, Dinosaur Jr., Juliana Hatfield, Wax, Warren Zevon, Uncle Tupelo, Throwing Muses, Morphine, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Abandoned Pools, the Go-Go's, and Mike Gordon of Phish. He usually works with production partner Sean Slade. Kolderie and Slade were friends from Yale University, where they played in bands together. They also became members of Sex Execs, a Boston-based new wave music band of the early 1980s. The duo had their formative experience as producers while they were in Sex Execs. Most of the group lived in a house in Dorchester, Boston that was wired up as a primitive studio. Other bands came over to record as well, including a local act called Three Colors, which featured saxophonist Dana Colley, later of Morphine. As Sex Execs became more successful, they started recording in professional studios such as Syncro Sound, which was owned by The Cars. Kolderie learned a lot from the engineers there. Coming in at number 5 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums is Mudhoney's "Superfuzz Bigmuff". Joining the program this week is host of the Rock And/Or Roll Podcast BJ Kramp. BJ and Bakko go track by track on this early grunge classic. Superfuzz Bigmuff is the debut EP by the Seattle grunge band Mudhoney. It was released on October 20, 1988 through record label Sub Pop. The album was later re-released in 1990 in the form of Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles. The album was named after two of the band's favorite guitar effects pedals: the Univox Super-Fuzz and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, which helped to provide the band's signature "dirty" sound. Coming in at number 6 on Rolling Stones greatest grunge albums is the second full length record from Alice In Chains, "Dirt". Joining Bakko in this episode is Chris Akin of the Classic Metal Show. Chris and Bakko go track by track and tell the story of Dirt. Dirt is the second studio album by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on September 29, 1992, through Columbia Records. Peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, the album was also well received by music critics. It has since been certified four-times platinum by the RIAA and gone on to sell five million copies worldwide, making Dirt the band's highest selling album to date. It is the band's last album recorded with all four original members, as bassist Mike Starr was fired from the band in January 1993. The album spawned five singles: "Would?", "Them Bones", "Angry Chair", "Rooster", and "Down in a Hole"; all with accompanying music videos. Dirt was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Coming in at No. 8 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums list is the 1993 record from Nirvana, In Utero. Joining Bakko this week is the host of Damn Good Movie Memories, Brian Davis. Brian and Bakko get into the details of the making of the follow up to the game changing Nevermind. In Utero is the third and final studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, by DGC Records. The band intended for the record to be a departure from the polished sound of its predecessor, Nevermind. Early in 1992, frontman Kurt Cobain stated that In Utero would showcase "both of the extremes" of Nirvana's sound, saying "it'll be more raw with some songs and more candy pop on some of the others. It won't be as one-dimensional as Nevermind". To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, Nirvana hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The music was quickly recorded within that time with few studio embellishments.
