Nominated for six Academy Awards (that's not the last time we'll write that!), Promising Young Woman is one of two directorial debuts up for Best Picture at this year's Oscars! With such incredible competition as Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Father, how will Emerald Fennell's first movie fare? Promising Young Woman is a bold movie that handles the topic of sexual assault in a way thoroughly unlike any other movie that's come before. Several years after her college best friend Nina was assaulted, Cassie Thomas (Carey Mulligan), now a med-school dropout, spends her nights finding and punishing sexual predators. When she finally discovers Nina's abuser, she sets in motion a plot to avenge her friend, while bringing down everyone else around her. It's the second of our dedicated Best Picture nominees episodes! This time, our hosts discuss Judas and the Black Messiah, a biopic starring Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party. Directed by Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist is a feature-length celebration of Old Hollywood through the eyes of silent film star George Valentin! As "talkies" become increasingly popular, Valentin learns that his days in Hollywood are numbered. But with the silent film era now decades behind us, were The Artist's days numbered from the start? The 81st Academy Awards, honouring the films of 2008, was notable for many reasons. Benjamin Button became the ninth movie to get 13 nominations (of which it won 3), Heath Ledger became the second actor to win an award posthumously (and the first for a superhero film), and Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire became the eleventh movie to win Best Picture without any acting nominations. This week on Classic Movies Live!, our hosts talk about Boyle's Mumbai-set game show drama. How good is it? Is it an accurate portrayal of India, or even Indian cinema? In 2005, critics all over the world predicted that Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain would win the 78th Academy Award for Best Picture. Imagine their shock when Crash won instead! This week, our hosts talk about one of the most controversial Best Picture winners of the last 20 years. Featuring an all-star cast including Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Thandie Newton, and Terrence Howard, Crash missed its singular acting nomination for Matt Dillon. The movie did however nab Best Film Editing and Best Screenplay in addition to its Best Picture win. But how does Crash hold up? Should it have gotten any of those awards? Since earning his Oscar with The Revenant, Leo has only been in one other movie that's released. That movie is none other than his second collaboration with Quentin Tarantino: Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood! For this 2019 Golden Age of Cinema retrospective, Leo would once again be nominated for an Oscar, alongside co-star Brad Pitt, and director Tarantino. Though he wouldn't win for this one, Once Upon a Time is nonetheless an important coda to DiCaprio's career so far. In this very special epilogue to Losing It Over Leo (so far), our hosts dissect Tarantino's 9th film, and what it says about the careers of those involved. This week, our hosts return to the distant past of 2018 to rewatch that year's Best Picture winner: Green Book! In a year full of great movies, the 2018 Oscars were notable for ignoring quite a few. But the Academy didn't ignore the Peter Farrelly-directed, Mahershala Ali vehicle tackling racism in the 60s. Green Book would go on to win Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Ali. Did it deserve any of them? Tune in to hear our hosts' verdict!

Why do some movies win Oscars while others don't? Is the year's Best Picture always also the year's best picture? Over the next several weeks, we'll be exploring these and other questions on Classic Movies Live! as we look back at Best Picture winners of years past! On this episode, Pierre and Jeff travel back to 2010, the year that a movie about Mark Zuckerberg faced off against an LGBTQ psychological horror movie to be Best Picture at the Academy Awards! But which film won that year? None other than The King's Speech! Tom Hooper's only film so far to win the Oscar for Best Picture (as well as the only one to bag Hooper a personal win for Director), The King's Speech tells the story of King George VI and his friendship with speech therapist Lionel Logue. Now that we're firmly in 2021, and with less than 5 months to go until the Oscars, this week's episode of Classic Movies Live! begins our yearly Oscars coverage! First up, our hosts discuss a likely contender for several categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Picture: Minari! When Korean-Americans Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica (Han Ye-ri) move to Arkansas to start a farm, their family... well, mostly just wants to go back to California. Not long after, Monica's mother Soonja (Youn Yuh-jung) moves in with them, much to the chagrin of Jacob and Monica's son, David (Alan S. Kim). Will Jacob become a successful farmer? Well folks, we've finally reached the end of the series. After this episode, Leonardo DiCaprio will finally have gotten his Oscar. That's right, in this episode, we talk about The Revenant. Hot off the heels of Birdman, Alejandro González Iñárritu re-entered Awards Cinema in 2015 with The Revenant, a half-true story about trapper Hugh Glass. A larger-than-life personality even in reality, Glass is given an extra layer of hyperbole by Leo, here giving perhaps his most animated physical performance ever. In addition to Leo, Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson, and Will Poulter join the cast in truly excellent roles. A truly taxin film to make, many of the people involved ended up on hiatus from Hollywood for several years, including Leo, who wouldn't act again until 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But most importantly of all, Leo would win an Oscar for his role in The Revenant. Should he have? Our hosts weigh in on this, our final (main) episode of Losing It Over Leo!
