Ep 534Spacehounds of IPC by E. E. Smith ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Spacehounds of IPC by E. E. Smith audiobook. Genre: scifi When the Inter-Planetary Corporation's (IPC) crack liner “IPV Arcturus” took off on a routine flight to Mars, it turned out to be the beginning of a unexpected and long voyage. There had been too many reports of errors in ship's flight positions from the Check Stations and brilliant physicist Dr. Percival (“Steve”) Stevens is aboard the Arcturus on a fact-finding mission to find out what's really happening, and hopefully save the honor of the brave pilots of the space-liner Arcturus from the desk-jockeys' in the Check Stations implications of imprecision - the nastiest insult you could cast at a ships pilot. He and the pilots are right, it was the Check Stations that were out of position, not the ships. But that's cold consolation because before the Arcturus reaches Mars it's attacked by a small, mysterious, globe shaped spaceship. Ep 533Masters of Space by E. E. Smith ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Masters of Space by E. E. Smith audiobook. Genre: scifi In Masters of Space, a bold deep-space experiment becomes humanity's first brush with a vanished empire. Young project leader Jarvis Hilton commands Project Theta Orionis: an elite team of scientists, a hard-edged naval crew, and the warship Perseus, all tasked with pushing beyond known space and answering questions no one on Earth can even frame yet. Tensions simmer from the start as Hilton must prove he can lead seasoned officers, keep a volatile mission on schedule, and hold his team together when the unknown stops being theoretical. Then the Perseus is forced out of faster-than-light travel by an eerie, skeletal object drifting in the void, and the expedition stumbles onto signs of an impossible conflict fought on a scale that dwarfs human imagination. Their next discovery is even stranger: a world rich in dangerous radioactive fuel ore, inhabited by humanoid robots who greet the newcomers not as trespassers, but as returning masters. As clues accumulate about the long-lost Masters and an ancient Enemy of All, Hilton faces a choice between caution and revelation, knowing either path could reshape humanity's place in the galaxy. Ep 532Lord Tedric by E. E. Smith ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Lord Tedric by E. E. Smith audiobook. Genre: scifi When a mysterious force plucks Sir Tedric, a hard-bitten knight of medieval Britain, out of his own age, he awakens in a future where humanity is only one player in a crowded, dangerous cosmos. Taken in by advanced allies who see both his courage and his stubborn code of honor, Tedric is remade for a new kind of battlefield: one of starships, alien empires, and weapons that can shatter worlds. Yet the transformation does not erase the man. He remains a warrior who believes in loyalty, oaths, and the protection of the helpless - values that collide with the cold calculations of interstellar power. As rival forces close in and hidden agendas surface, Tedric must learn to navigate politics and strategy far beyond anything a sword and shield ever prepared him for. The question is not only whether he can survive this ruthless new era, but whether his old-fashioned sense of honor can matter in a war where entire civilizations are at stake. Ep 531First Lensman by E. E. Smith ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

First Lensman by E. E. Smith audiobook. Genre: scifi In a galaxy clawing its way out of chaos, Earth and its neighboring worlds struggle to police the new lanes of interstellar travel. Veteran officer Virgil Samms has seen too much to believe the rising wave of piracy is just opportunism. Ship after ship vanishes, outposts go silent, and every investigation points to a smarter, darker hand at work - a hidden power using criminals, corporations, and politics as disposable pieces. As Samms helps forge the Galactic Patrol into a force that can stand against the void, he is drawn into a conflict that is far larger than any border dispute: a shadow war whose true enemy prefers to remain unseen. Then an encounter with an ancient, enigmatic intelligence changes the stakes. Samms is offered a strange tool and a greater responsibility - a Lens - and with it the first step toward creating a new kind of guardian. First Lensman launches E. E. Smith's classic space opera with blistering action, grand-scale strategy, and a theme of disciplined service set against an almost mythic struggle for the future of sentient life. Ep 530Anything Once by Douglas Grant ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]

Anything Once by Douglas Grant audiobook. Genre: adventure When Lou Lacey, a tough, undersized teenage girl with a bundle of stolen provisions and nowhere she is willing to call home, slips through a wheat field to the road, she finds a young man unconscious in the dust with blood on his temple. He introduces himself as James (Jim) Botts, a New Yorker in battered travel clothes and on a strict deadline to reach the city on foot, with pride and principle leaving him little room to ask for help. Lou patches him up and, before either of them can decide whether to trust the other, circumstance forces them into an uneasy partnership. Together they push eastward from small villages toward Buffalo and then New York City, measuring each mile in hunger, fatigue, and hard choices. Along the way they meet strangers who offer bargains, scams, kindness, and temptation in equal measure, and the pair must learn how to navigate trains, roads, and the unwritten rules of survival without money to spare. As Jim's private purpose collides with Lou's secret fear of being claimed and controlled, their journey becomes a test of identity, loyalty, and what it really means to be free, even for just one more day. Ep 529Raiders of the Universes by Donald Wandrei ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Raiders of the Universes by Donald Wandrei audiobook. Genre: scifi It was the 34th century and all five of the Federation of Planets around Sol were buzzing with their usual activity when the Raiders appeared. They were indeed Raiders of Universes because they had ravaged many systems before reaching Earth and showed no signs of slowing down in the least. Their weapons were invincible, their greed merciless and their natures completely alien. Indeed 'they' were from another dimension entirely. Eating up entire solar systems and planets, they slowed down just a bit when intelligent life was found on Earth. Not much since they were in a hurry, but just long enough to tell the Earthlings to mine all the Radium ore on Earth and put it conveniently on the surface ...... in six days....or else. - For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate) (00:00:00) Chapter 01 (00:30:07) Chapter 02 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 528The Flying Saucers are Real by Donald Keyhoe ~ Full Audiobook [science]

The Flying Saucers are Real by Donald Keyhoe audiobook. Genre: science The Flying Saucers are Real is a book that investigates numerous encounters between USAF fighters, personnel, and other aircraft, and UFOs between 1947 and 1950. Keyhoe contended that the Air Force was actively investigating these cases of close encounter, with a policy of concealing their existence from the public until 1949. He stated that this policy was then replaced by one of cautious, progressive revelation. Keyhoe further stated that Earth had been visited by extraterrestrials for two centuries, with the frequency of these visits increasing sharply after the first atomic weapon test in 1945. Citing anecdotal evidence, he intimated the Air Force may have attained and adapted some aspect of the alien technology: its method of propulsion and perhaps its source of power. He believed the Air Force or the US Government would eventually reveal these technologies to the public when the Soviet Union was no longer a threat. Donald E. Keyhoe, who relates here his investigation of the flying saucers, writes with twenty-five years of experience in observing aeronautical developments. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He flew in active service with the Marine Corps, managed the tour of the historic plane in which Bennett and Byrd made their North Pole flight, was aide to Charles Lindbergh after the famous Paris flight, and was chief of information for the Aeronautics Branch, Department of Commerce. Ep 527A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay audiobook. Genre: scifi Masquerading as a Victorian scientific romance and then detonating into something far stranger, A Voyage to Arcturus follows the brooding, restless Maskull as he is drawn into an otherworldly expedition beyond Earth. Lured by a mysterious summons and guided by the enigmatic Krag, Maskull joins a journey to the distant planet Tormance, orbiting the binary stars Arcturus. There, the very laws of nature seem shaped by thought, desire, and moral force, and Maskull's body begins to change in unsettling ways as new senses awaken. Each region of Tormance becomes a living argument: landscapes and inhabitants embody competing philosophies of love, power, beauty, suffering, and truth. As Maskull encounters a procession of charismatic teachers, seductive ideals, and perilous adversaries, he is pushed to test every assumption he has carried from Earth. What begins as exploration becomes a relentless spiritual trial, forcing him to decide what kind of reality he can accept and what price he is willing to pay for meaning. Hallucinatory, provocative, and fiercely imaginative, Lindsay's cult classic is a quest not for conquest, but for the nature of the self. Ep 523Gift of the Magi by O. Henry ~ Full Audiobook [romance]

Gift of the Magi by O. Henry audiobook. Genre: romance The Gift of the Magi is an O. Henry short story in which a young couple are very much in love with each other but can barely afford their one-room apartment. For Christmas, they each make a sacrifice to purchase a gift for the other, with ironic results. The moral of the story is that physical possessions, however valuable they may be, are of little value in the grand scheme of things. The true unselfish love that the characters, Jim and Della, share is greater than their possessions. O. Henry ends the story by clarifying the metaphor between the characters in the story, Della and James (or Jim), and the Biblical Magi. The Gift of the Magi features O. Ep 522Women in Love by D. H. Lawrence ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Women in Love by D. H. Lawrence audiobook. Genre: drama Women in Love is a novel by British author D. H. Lawrence published in 1920. It is a sequel to his earlier novel The Rainbow (1915), and follows the continuing loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an unadmitted homoerotic attraction between Gerald and Rupert. The novel ranges over the whole of British society at the time of the First World War and eventually ends high up in the snows of the Swiss Alps. Ep 521The Behavior of the Honey Bee in Pollen Collecting by D. B. Casteel ~ Full Audiobook [science]

The Behavior of the Honey Bee in Pollen Collecting by D. B. Casteel audiobook. Genre: science In The Behavior of the Honey Bee in Pollen Collecting, D. B. Casteel offers a clear, observation-driven study of how worker honey bees locate, gather, and manage pollen - the protein-rich resource that fuels brood rearing and colony growth. Moving from the hive outward into the field, Casteel follows the forager's work step by step: how bees choose among blooming plants, how they loosen and pack pollen onto specialized body structures, and how the familiar pollen loads are formed and carried back to the colony. Along the way, the book examines the signals and practical constraints that shape pollen foraging, including floral traits, weather, time of day, and the needs of the brood nest, and it distinguishes pollen collecting from nectar foraging in both purpose and technique. Written to connect careful natural history with useful insight, the study highlights what these behaviors mean for beekeeping, crop pollination, and the broader relationship between insects and flowering plants. The result is a focused introduction to the mechanics and logic of pollen collection, inviting listeners to see a common backyard insect as a finely tuned biological system. Ep 520The Island of Appledore by Cornelia Meigs ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]

The Island of Appledore by Cornelia Meigs audiobook. Genre: adventure Any one who knows the coast of New England will know also the Island of Appledore and just where it lies. Such a person can tell you that it is not exactly the place described in this book, that it is small and bare and rocky with no woods, no meadows, no church, or mill, or mill-creek road. Perhaps all that the story tells of it that is true is that there the rocks give forth their strange deep song, “the calling of Appledore,” as warning of a storm, that there the poppies bloom as nowhere else in the world, that there the surf comes rolling in, day in and day out, the whole year through, and that there one’s memory turns back with longing, no matter how many years of absence have gone by. There, also, you can sit for hours to watch the huge, green breakers come foaming and tumbling in endless procession up the stony beach; you can watch the nimble sandpipers and the tireless, wheeling gulls; and if you choose you can spin for yourself just such a story as this one of Billy Wentworth and Captain Saulsby and Sally Shute, a tale of mysteries and perils and midnight adventures on the shores of Appledore. Ep 519Project Mastodon by Clifford D. Simak ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Project Mastodon by Clifford D. Simak audiobook. Genre: scifi When three longtime friends stumble onto a working time-jump device, they do not rush to change history - they go looking for opportunity. Wesley Adams, a visionary deal-maker, John Cooper, his blunt and loyal right hand, and Chuck Hudson, a well-connected former diplomat, leap back tens of thousands of years to a North America that is familiar in outline but ruled by Pleistocene reality: shifting glaciers, altered landscapes, and the looming presence of mastodons and other dangerous wildlife. Their bold plan is not just to explore, but to claim: they plant a flag, set up a rough capital, and announce the birth of a brand-new nation - Mastodonia - in a time before modern borders exist. But building a country is harder than naming one. While two men guard supplies and wrestle with survival in the ancient wilderness, the third returns to the twentieth century to seek recognition, investment, and legitimacy. What follows is a wry, fast-moving clash between big dreams and hard logistics, as ambition, bureaucracy, and the raw facts of deep time threaten to turn a clever scheme into a very expensive mistake. Ep 518Hellhounds of the Cosmos by Clifford D. Simak ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]

Hellhounds of the Cosmos by Clifford D. Simak audiobook. Genre: scifi For six months the world has been coming apart. Towns vanish overnight, expeditions return broken and babbling, and the newspapers can only give the terror a name: the Black Horror. It does not march like an army or land like a spaceship - it simply appears, leaving ruin behind, and every weapon humanity owns seems useless against it. As panic spreads and civilization strains to hold together, one man offers a theory as frightening as the threat itself. Dr. Silas White believes the invaders are not from another planet, but from the fourth dimension - and that the only way to stop them is to meet them on their own ground. Caught between skepticism, fear, and the relentless pressure of each new atrocity, a hard-nosed reporter, Henry Woods, finds himself drawn into White's plan. The proposal is simple to state and nearly impossible to survive: send ninety-eight volunteers across the dimensional barrier, remake them for a realm beyond human senses, and ask them to fight for a planet they may never see again. What follows is a compact, high-stakes journey into the unknown, where science becomes desperation and courage is the last remaining defense. He was going to make his fortune if he could just keep the Cytha at bay, a big, dumb animal that could munch through 10 rows of vua in a night. Despite native superstitions he was going to have to hunt and kill the pest if he was to protect his crop. It was a dim-witted beast. How hard could it be? – “The World That Couldn’t Be” was first published in the January 1958 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction magazine. Ep 516The Orphan by Clarence Edward Mulford ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]

The Orphan by Clarence Edward Mulford audiobook. Genre: adventure Many men swore that The Orphan was bad, and many swore profanely and with wonderful command of epithets because he was bad, but for obvious reasons that was as far as the majority went to show their displeasure. Those of the minority who had gone farther and who had shown their hatred by rash actions only proved their foolishness; for they had indeed gone far and would return no more. But Sheriff Jim Shields is tracking The Orphan, wanted for the murder of sheepherders, and won’t stop until he brings the bad man to justice. Often billed as the second book in Clarence Mulford’s Hopalong Cassidy series, Hoppy doesn’t appear in this one, but it’s still as rip-roaring a western as you’ll ever see. Ep 515Loss of the Sultana by Chester D. Berry ~ Full Audiobook [history]

Loss of the Sultana by Chester D. Berry audiobook. Genre: history In April 1865, as the Civil War collapses into uneasy peace and the nation reels from Abraham Lincoln's assassination, thousands of Union prisoners are finally released from Confederate camps like Andersonville and Cahaba. For many of these gaunt, half-starved soldiers, the steamboat Sultana seems like a last hard step on the road home. Instead, it becomes a floating pressure cooker of exhaustion, bureaucracy, and greed: a vessel built for a few hundred people is packed with more than two thousand, pushing north on the Mississippi after a hurried repair and a rushed loading at Vicksburg.Chester D. Berry, himself a survivor, reconstructs the tragedy through a blend of firsthand narrative, gathered testimonies, and documentary detail. Voices from men who endured prisons, marches, and hospitals now confront a new enemy - fire, boiling steam, icy river water, and the chaos of a night-time catastrophe near Memphis. As Berry follows the disaster and the investigations that follow, he also probes the unsettling question of how the worst maritime loss of life in American history could be so quickly overshadowed, and what happens when survivors must fight not only to live, but to be remembered. Ep 514The Ghost of Guir House by Charles Willing Beale ~ Full Audiobook [horror]

The Ghost of Guir House by Charles Willing Beale audiobook. Genre: horror When New Yorker Paul Henley receives a curious letter clearly meant for someone else, he does not toss it aside. On impulse - and with a growing fascination he cannot quite explain - he answers the invitation and travels south to the isolated Guir House in rural Virginia. There he meets Miss Dorothy Guir, an intelligent and disarming hostess whose warmth only deepens the unease that clings to her family's ancient, black-stone mansion. Inside its shadowed halls, strange portraits, half-forgotten histories, and whispered warnings suggest that Guir House is not merely old, but marked by something restless. As Paul tries to navigate the consequences of his initial deception, he is drawn into a tightening web of secrets surrounding the Guir name, the house's unsettling reputation, and a series of uncanny experiences that blur the line between superstition and something far more unsettling. With threads of gothic romance, psychological suspense, and late-Victorian fascination with hypnotism and occult philosophy, The Ghost of Guir House builds a steadily mounting dread around one question: is the haunting in the walls, in the past, or in the mind itself? Ep 512The Heroes, or Greek Fairy Tales for my Children by Charles Kingsley ~ Full Audiobook [folklore]

The Heroes, or Greek Fairy Tales for my Children by Charles Kingsley audiobook. Genre: folklore In The Heroes, or Greek Fairy Tales for my Children, Charles Kingsley invites young listeners into the bright, perilous world of ancient Greece through a warm, fireside style that treats mythology as a treasury of moral adventure. Framed as stories told for children, the book retells classic legends with clear, vigorous prose and a storyteller's sense of wonder. You will meet Perseus, a determined youth set against monsters and dark magic; Jason, drawn into a daring voyage in search of glory; and Theseus, who must prove himself amid treachery, strange roads, and an enemy hidden at the heart of a maze. Kingsley keeps the gods, heroes, and creatures vivid, but he is just as interested in courage, self-control, loyalty, and the cost of pride. Across sea-journeys, riddling prophecies, and encounters with fearsome beasts, each tale asks what it means to be brave for the right reasons, and how a person can hold to honor when the world is full of temptations and terror. It is both an accessible introduction to Greek myth and a spirited meditation on character. Ep 511Kentucky’s Famous Feuds and Tragedies by Charles G. Mutzenberg ~ Full Audiobook [history]

Kentucky’s Famous Feuds and Tragedies by Charles G. Mutzenberg audiobook. Genre: history In Kentucky's Famous Feuds and Tragedies, Charles G. Mutzenberg assembles a hard-edged tour through the violent vendettas and public calamities that helped shape Kentucky's reputation in the late 1800s. Beginning with the infamous Hatfield-McCoy conflict, Mutzenberg traces how ordinary disputes over property, politics, and personal honor could harden into years of retaliation, ambushes, and courtroom drama. From there, he turns to other, less widely remembered wars between neighbors and kin - including the French-Eversole feud and other regional clashes that drew newspapers, officials, and outsiders into communities already divided by loyalty and fear. Told as a sequence of tightly focused episodes, the book places listeners close to the people living inside these storms: family patriarchs trying to hold a side together, hotheaded young men eager to prove themselves, and local authorities struggling to enforce law where allegiance often mattered more than statutes. At once social history and cautionary tale, Mutzenberg's account examines how pride, rumor, and grievance can ignite a cycle of violence that outlives its original cause. Courageously, Nell decides to escape Quilp, and she and her grandfather run away to the country to live as beggars, travelling into the Midlands of England. Ep 507The Mystery of the Pinckney Draught by Charles C. Nott ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]

The Mystery of the Pinckney Draught by Charles C. Nott audiobook. Genre: mystery Charles Pinckney, member of the South Carolina legislature, Confederation Congress, U.S. Congress, and notably the Constitutional Convention of 1787, may have been regarded by some as perhaps the true author of the U.S. Constitution, although most likely James Madison would vehemently argue the point. This book investigates what may, or may not have happened to the draft of the Constitution which was drawn up by Charles Pinckney and submitted to the Constitutional Convention in May of 1787, and how (or if) it differed from the Constitution which was adopted. The questions which are delved into most deeply revolve around the following mystery: why, if, and by whom Pinckney's version of this important document was overlooked, or was it possibly destroyed intentionally (or for other reasons). Author Charles C. Nott was formerly Chief Justice of the United States Court of Claims, appointed by president Lincoln. Ep 506History of Billy the Kid by Charles A. Siringo ~ Full Audiobook [biography]

History of Billy the Kid by Charles A. Siringo audiobook. Genre: biography A cowboy outlaw whose youthful daring has never been equalled in the annals of criminal history. When a bullet pierced his heart he was less than twenty-two years of age, and had killed twenty-one men, Indians not included. The author feels that he is capable of writing a true and unvarnished history of 'Billy the Kid,' as he was personally acquainted with him, and assisted in his capture, by furnishing Sheriff Pat Garrett with three of his fighting cowboys--Jas. H. East, Lee Hall and Lon Chambers. The facts set down in this narrative were gotten from the lips of 'Billy the Kid,' himself, and from such men as Pat Garrett, John W. Poe, Kip McKinnie, Charlie Wall, the Coe Brothers, Tom O'Phalliard, Henry Brown, John Middleton, Martin Chavez, and Ash Upson. All these men took an active part, for or against, the 'Kid.' Ash Upson had known him from childhood, and was considered one of the family, for several years, in his mother's home. Other facts were gained from the lips of Mrs. Charlie Bowdre, who kept 'Billy the Kid,' hid out at her home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, after he had killed his two guards and escaped. Ep 503Deep Lake Mystery by Carolyn Wells ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]

Deep Lake Mystery by Carolyn Wells audiobook. Genre: mystery Imagine, if you will, a murder committed in a sealed room. A room which has been sealed from the inside, that is, with no possible means of exit, excepting a dangerous plunge through a window into a deep, foreboding lake with swirling eddies and rocks abound. Add to that image a wreath of flowers around the head and across the chest of the victim, a crucifix, an orange, a feather scarf tucked in here and there, two crackers, a handkerchief, and a feather duster. And a nail. Oh, and one more item to add to the curious array of arranged paraphernalia - a watch in a water pitcher by the bedside. Now place yourself in a position to solve the mystery behind this obvious murder of a wealthy man who was liked by everyone, and had no known enemies. Carolyn Wells was a well known author of children's stories, until she began reading mystery stories written by Anna Katherine Green, and from then on she devoted her writings to puzzling mysteries in a similar vein. Ep 494The Hidden Places by Bertrand W. Sinclair ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

The Hidden Places by Bertrand W. Sinclair audiobook. Genre: drama Robert Hollister comes home from World War I carrying the kind of wound no medal can redeem: a face so scarred that strangers flinch, old friends do not recognize him, and ordinary life turns into a daily humiliation. With nothing left to anchor him in the city, Hollister drifts west to the Pacific Coast and then farther still, into the remote reaches of British Columbia, where rain-soaked forests, tidal inlets, and hard physical work offer a brutal sort of peace. In the wild, he meets Doris Cleveland, a young woman living with blindness and her own fierce resolve to keep life meaningful. Their unlikely connection becomes a lifeline, but the solitude Hollister seeks is not as empty as he expects - the backcountry has memories, neighbors, and entanglements of its own. Ep 492Gargoyles by Ben Hecht ~ Full Audiobook [drama]

Gargoyles by Ben Hecht audiobook. Genre: drama The author, Ben Hecht, was a prolific writer as well as a renowned screenwriter, producer, and director of films. His screenwriting skills include some of the most popular films of Hollywood's golden era, including 'Gone With the Wind', 'Wuthering Heights', 'Spellbound', and 'Scarface', to name but a few. Hecht had already established himself as a novelist and an author of short stories when 'Gargoyles' was published. 'Gargoyles' delves deep into the psyches of individuals and of their relationships within social classes, revealing both the darker sides and the sentimental sides. Sometimes the characteristics, values and ethics of his characters are altered over time, as they (sometimes unwittingly) look within themselves and acknowledge what they valued most, how their egos affect their decisions and ethics, yet not always understanding the reasons those values are so crucial to them. What we learn is the results of these changes, as we center on the lives of George Basine, his friends, and his family, and most importantly, the masks that each wore. Ep 491Officer 666 by Barton Wood Currie ~ Full Audiobook [comedy]

Officer 666 by Barton Wood Currie audiobook. Genre: comedy In this brisk early-1900s farce by Barton Wood Currie (with Augustin McHugh), New York society becomes a stage for the boldest kind of amateur heroics. Travers Gladwin, restless heir to a fortune and tired of being treated like a decorative idler, discovers that a celebrated art burglar has set his sights on the Gladwin home and its prized paintings. Instead of quietly alerting the authorities, Travers grabs a borrowed police uniform and decides to meet the criminal on his own terms - as the mysterious Officer 666. The plan might have worked, too, if the thief had not arrived with a scheme of his own: impersonating Travers Gladwin himself. Soon the mansion is crowded with mismatched identities, suspicious servants, genuine detectives, and social guests who have no idea whether they are flirting with a millionaire, a crook, or a cop. At the center of the chaos is Helen Burton, whose quick intelligence and steady nerve make her far more than a bystander as the night spirals into a high-society cat-and-mouse game. Packed with witty dialogue, romantic sparks, and escalating misunderstandings, Officer 666 turns a simple burglary into a runaway comedy of manners and masks. Ep 489The House of the White Shadows by B. L. Farjeon ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]

The House of the White Shadows by B. L. Farjeon audiobook. Genre: mystery Is a defense attorney bound to defend his client, or with his conscience, when he knows that the man he is defending is guilty of the charges against him after the trial has already commenced? And if friends hold a belief that he may have been aware of it before the trial commenced, yet they are endeared to the man and his family as upstanding and of the highest grade? Might it not become cause for blackmail, and therefore potential retribution? 'The House of White Shadows' brings these issues to the forefront, while the reader learns of the background of the advocate, his family history, and the house in question. The characters in the story, the history of the house, the truth behind the white shadows are all woven together in a fascinating manner to be brought to fruition as the books progress with dramatic insight and understanding. Mr. Farjeon's style is remarkable for its vivid realism. The London 'Athenæum' in a long and appreciative review styles him 'a master of realistic fiction.' On account of his sentiment and minute characterization he is regarded as a follower of the method of Dickens. No writer since that master can picture like Farjeon the touching and pathetic type of innocent childhood, pure in spite of miserable and squalid surroundings. He can paint, too, a scene of sombre horror so vividly that even Dickens himself could scarcely emulate its realism For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate) (00:00:00) Chapter 1 (00:33:12) Chapter 2 (01:08:56) Chapter 3 (01:43:51) Chapter 4 (02:17:55) Chapter 5 (02:47:32) Chapter 6 (03:18:59) Chapter 7 (03:43:01) Chapter 8 (04:10:28) Chapter 9 (04:28:30) Chapter 10 (04:50:09) Chapter 11 (05:31:10) Chapter 12 (06:00:42) Chapter 13 (06:44:26) Chapter 14 (07:05:21) Chapter 15 (07:34:14) Chapter 16 (08:10:02) Chapter 17 (08:50:56) Chapter 18 (09:26:14) Chapter 19 (09:51:32) Chapter 20 (10:17:07) Chapter 21 (10:36:45) Chapter 22 (11:18:56) Chapter 23 (11:44:05) Chapter 24 (12:15:02) Chapter 25 (12:36:33) Chapter 26 (13:00:49) Chapter 27 (13:41:06) Chapter 28 (14:15:36) Chapter 29 (15:04:43) Chapter 30 (15:25:42) Chapter 31 (15:52:43) Chapter 32 Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 488The Hill of Dreams by Arthur Machen ~ Full Audiobook [horror]

The Hill of Dreams by Arthur Machen audiobook. Genre: horror The novel recounts the life of a young man, Lucian Taylor, focusing on his dreamy childhood in rural Wales, in a town based on Caerleon. The Hill of Dreams of the title is an old Roman fort where Lucian has strange sensual visions, including ones of the town in the time of Roman Britain. Later it describes Lucian's attempts to make a living as an author in London, enduring poverty and suffering in the pursuit of art. Generally thought to be Machen's greatest work, it was little noticed on its publication in 1907 save in a glowing review by Alfred Douglas. It was actually written between 1895 and 1897 and has elements of the style of the decadent and aesthetic movement of the period, seen through Machen's own mystical preoccupations. Ep 486The Master Mystery by Arthur B. Reeve ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]

The Master Mystery by Arthur B. Reeve audiobook. Genre: mystery While Harry Houdini didn't rise to fame as a screen actor, silent film makers of the day sought to capitalize on his fame. The Master Mystery was Houdini's first such attempt, and it was embraced by the viewing public, leading to other screen roles following. The hero (or superhero) is Quentin Locke, scientist, agent of the U.S. Justice Department, and not surprisingly, an escape artist extraordinaire. The Master Mystery follows agent Locke through many pitfalls, in true serial fashion, as he is tasked with uncovering a band of thugs and a peculiar metal robot (reportedly the first robot in film) with a brain, called an automaton, which has been robbing potential inventors of their patent rights. All in good fun by today's standards, we find our hero escaping a straitjacket, a diver's suit, and an electric chair to name but a few, and of course winning the hand of the daughter of one of the industrialists along the way.
