When Lou Lacey, a tough, undersized teenage girl with a bundle of stolen provisions and nowhere she is willing to call home, slips through a wheat field to the road, she finds a young man unconscious in the dust with blood on his temple. He introduces himself as James (Jim) Botts, a New Yorker in battered travel clothes and on a strict deadline to reach the city on foot, with pride and principle leaving him little room to ask for help. Lou patches him up and, before either of them can decide whether to trust the other, circumstance forces them into an uneasy partnership. Together they push eastward from small villages toward Buffalo and then New York City, measuring each mile in hunger, fatigue, and hard choices. Along the way they meet strangers who offer bargains, scams, kindness, and temptation in equal measure, and the pair must learn how to navigate trains, roads, and the unwritten rules of survival without money to spare. As Jim's private purpose collides with Lou's secret fear of being claimed and controlled, their journey becomes a test of identity, loyalty, and what it really means to be free, even for just one more day.
