Why Pittsburgh’s Menorah Went to the U.S. Supreme Court
There are tons of holiday traditions in Downtown Pittsburgh, including a special ceremony to mark the start of Hanukkah. Each year, the mayor and community leaders light a 12-foot menorah in front of the City-County Building. But its place on government property wasn’t always celebrated. In 1986, a group of Pittsburghers brought a lawsuit against our local governments to remove both the menorah and the creche, which in those days sat outside the County Courthouse. We’re talking with one of the plaintiffs, attorney Jon Pushinsky, about his legal argument and what it felt like to take this case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. **This episode originally published December 6, 2023. Why Cannabis, Abortion & Raising the Minimum Wage Aren't on PA Ballots
The 2024 election brought a lot of change, and not just for high-level Republicans. In a handful of states, there were also citizen-led initiatives in consideration, too. They’re sometimes called ballot questions or voter referendums, and they’re one way regular people can go around their lawmakers to pass things like recreational cannabis, abortion protections, a higher minimum wage, and more. They literally give power to the people. But those paths aren’t available to us here in Pennsylvania. Today we’re talking about why. Special thanks to reporter Ed Mahon of Spotlight PA for sharing his wisdom on this one. If you enjoyed today's interview with Alterations Express Marketing Manager, Jen Rondinelli, learn more here. 3 Races To Watch on Pennsylvania Ballots

But you may not know about three other important statewide races in Pennsylvania — for attorney general, auditor general, and treasurer. City Cast Pittsburgh host Megan Harris is teaming up with City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri and SpotlightPA’s Stephen Caruso to explain why these positions matter, who’s seeking them out, and what’s at stake for the commonwealth. Is Pittsburgh Going Broke Again? Plus, Why the Police Chief is Taking a Pay Cut
In an exclusive sit-down, Mayor Ed Gainey shares his outlook on the city’s 2025 budget, his own re-election campaign, and why his still new-ish police chief is making headlines for his new (old?) part time job. Some of our favorite moments include: why Gainey says he’s not worried about Act 47 why he didn’t propose a tax increase like the county did why he says the 2026 NFL Draft is worth hosting, in spite of financial turbulence why lowering the city’s homicide rate was always connected to whether Pittsburgh police chief Larry Scirotto could resume his “dream” of refereeing NCAA basketball, and why Scirotto’s salary will now be docked why Gainey stands by an inclusionary zoning provision that some say could negate his sweeping new housing reform plan; and why Pittsburgh could be headed toward a new WNBA expansion team. How Allegheny County ‘Cures’ a Ballot
Allegheny County could have election night returns sooner than expected, thanks to pandemic-era investments in ballot sorting technology, a new design for mail-in envelopes, and an all-hands-on-deck approach to Election Day. Pittsburgh Potties, Public School Closures, and a Permanent Ferris Wheel?
It’s the Friday news roundup! The Ferris wheel from Oktoberfest might be gone, but another one is waiting in the wings as part of the North Side’s Esplanade development. We’re talking about the final and very controversial consultants’ proposal to close over a dozen Pittsburgh schools. Plus, more public bathrooms are coming Downtown and why Schenley Park’s Columbus statue was back in the news. We always cite our sources: Piatt Companies presented its plan for the Esplanade development to the City Planning Commission. Consultants shared their final plan for reconfiguring Pittsburgh Public Schools. Learn more about the plan here. A group of public school parents came up with an alternate plan. About four years since it started, the legal battle over the Columbus statue in Schenley Park is still going on. The Surprising True Story of Pittsburgh’s Glowing Green Man
There’s an urban legend here about a man — a spectre with a glowing green face — doomed to roam the highways of Western Pennsylvania. He may have been burned by acid or fire or lightning. The details are squishy, but the real story behind “The Monster of Beaver County” was a tragic one. City Cast’s Wil Fulton is here to explain how Charlie No-Face left an eerie mark on generations of Pittsburgh-area kids. Bus Line Redesigns, Higher Taxes & Worms in Your Potato Patch Fries
It’s the Friday news roundup! There’s a big redesign coming for Pittsburgh Regional Transit, and a whole bunch of ways to let the authority know how you feel about it. We’re talking about who is — and who should be — receiving arts funding in Pittsburgh and sharing opportunities for local artists, including Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh’s call for art. Plus, we’re discussing a big baseball meetup this weekend, an unsettling contest at Kennywood, and a proposal to raise county property taxes. We always cite our sources: Two Buccos fans protested against Bob Nutting in front of the City-Council building. Pennsylvania got some attention during SNL in some sketches about the Oakmont Classic and Washington crossing the Delaware. Pittsburgh Regional Transit released its first draft of the bus line redesign. Pittsburghers for Public Transit says that the bus line redesign must “do no harm.” The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council found that there are racial inequities in funding our city’s arts organizations. Why Do Bad Cops Get Their Jobs Back in Pittsburgh?
When regular people get fired for doing something they shouldn’t, it’s usually cut and dry. Most folks don’t fight for months or years to return to their old workplace, especially if you’ve been disciplined in public. But for Pittsburgh police, it’s not only the norm, it usually comes with enormous checks for hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay. Today we’re with Rich Lord, the managing editor for PublicSource, to talk about the very old state law that makes these reinstatements possible; a few recent, higher profile examples like Keith Edmunds and Aaron Fetty; and the surprising way the Gainey administration has responded. Whose Land Is Pittsburgh Built On?
The Steel City loves to revel in its own history, but many of those stories are rooted in colonialism and the generations of immigration that followed. Pittsburgh is a big tech city, known for everything from robotics to self-driving cars. Three Mile Island Returns, Primanti’s Gets Political & How PA Unbanned Pittsburgh Rodeos
Rodeos are coming back to the city, but no one in Harrisburg wants to claim credit for their return. Pumpkin spice coffee is apparently a Pennsylvania creation, VP candidate JD Vance had a not-great time at a local Primanti’s, and thanks to Microsoft, the nuclear power plant Three Mile Island could get new life on the electrical grid. Plus, it’s the last day of our fall membership campaign and WE NEED YOU to become a member today. It takes a lot to keep City Cast Pittsburgh and Hey Pittsburgh running strong. Microsoft is reopening the nuclear plant on Three Mile Island, and local reactions are mixed. Primanti’s made headlines after a JD Vance campaign visit went awry. The sandwich shop released a statement about the confusion. We’re reminiscing on other candidate visits to local Pittsburgh eateries, like Kasich’s Oyster House homecoming and the Obamas’ love for Pamela’s. City Cast has put together a handy voter registration checklist that includes info about finding your polling place. Plus, Allegheny County has a tool that shows you your sample ballot.
