Sheriff Bilal Pushes Back on Mismanagement Allegations & Calls to Abolish Office
There’s no other elected official in Philly getting more scrutiny right now than Sheriff Rochelle Bilal. Some even want her office abolished. Just this week, The Philadelphia Inquirer’s editorial board called for her fellow elected Democrats to take her to task for a range of alleged mismanagement, corruption, and security problems uncovered by reporters. So on today’s show host Trenae Nuri goes down to the Sheriff’s Office on Broad Street and hears directly from Philly Sheriff Rochelle Bilal. She argues that she fixed a broken office, denies that there have been security problems on her watch at the courthouses, and calls for a huge increase in her budget. How a Tiny College Hours Away Rescued a Philly Dance Legacy
A year ago this week, the University of the Arts in Center City announced that it was suddenly closing its doors, forever, due to financial problems. The decision shocked its students, faculty, and the city at large. But there was one bright spot: The UArts dance program was saved by a tiny college in Vermont. And now we’re told that the dance program is expected to return to Philadelphia from its current location at Vermont’s Bennington College in the 2026-2027 academic year. So we’re revisiting our conversation between host Trenae Nuri, Laura Walker, president of Bennington College, and Donna Faye Burchfield, director of the dance program, about how, and why, Bennington saved this Philly jewel. Is Philly Sports Talk Radio Diverse Enough?
City Cast Philly contributor O.J. Spivey joins host Trenae Nuri to talk about his recent column in The Philadelphia Tribune about how sports radio call-in shows in Philly – a powerful and important medium in this town – don’t have any full-time hosts who are Black and not former professional athletes. Krasner Wins Primary for Third Term as District Attorney
District Attorney Larry Krasner defeated Pat Dugan in the Democratic race for district attorney. Dugan spent more money on the campaign than Krasner, but the two-term incumbent leaned on his record as a progressive prosecutor and the city's lowest murder rate in a half-century. With no one running on the Republican ticket, this paves the way for Krasner to secure a third term as D.A. in the November general election. Tune into today’s episode of City Cast Philly as host Trenae Nuri and executive producer Matt Katz breakdown the results of the primary election. D.A. Race: Challenger Pat Dugan Says Philly Doesn’t Feel Safe
For our Wednesday politics episode, former Judge Pat Dugan visits City Cast Philly to make his case for why District Attorney Larry Krasner, a two-term incumbent, doesn’t deserve to be reelected. Dugan notes that despite a recent drop in the murder rate, the number of homicides in the city is far too high and is directly attributable to Krasner’s policies. Dugan also says that while Krasner is held up as a “progressive prosecutor,” certain city diversion programs – which provide resources instead of jail time for some low-level offenders – have floundered under Krasner. And he blasts Krasner’s approach to retail theft. Krasner was on City Cast Philly last Wednesday, April 30, so check out that episode. The Democratic primary election for district attorney is May 20. After Airbnb Crackdown, a New Hotel Trend Takes Over Philly
Philly is seeing something of a boom in boutique hotels as we brace for what’s expected to be a massive tourism year in 2026. After the city started regulating and placing restrictions on Airbnbs and other short-term rentals, a crop of new, small – and Instagramable – hotels have popped up around town. Five opened last year alone. To see what’s going on with the boutique hotel scene, we visited the Gas Lamp Hotel in Old City and hung out with co-owners Scott Yesner and Wendell Holland. Other boutique hotels in the city include Yowie and Society Hill Hotel in Queen Village, The Dwight D Hotel and The Franklin in Rittenhouse, Hotel Anna & Bel in Fishtown, Riversuites on the Delaware River, Guild House Hotel in the Gayborhood, Morris House Hotel by Washington Square Park and Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast Inns in University City. State Rep. Jared Solomon Wants To Get Rid of the Sheriff’s Office & Gifts for Lawmakers
It’s Wednesday, so we’re talking politics on City Cast Philly. State Representative Jared Solomon of Northeast Philly is sometimes referred to as a “reformer.” Why? He wants to ban Pennsylvania state lawmakers from getting gifts from people who are trying to curry their favor. He wants to term limits for congressional representatives. And he wants to eliminate Philly’s long-troubled sheriff’s office. In this wide-ranging interview at his law office in Center City, Solomon talks about why he’s committed to reform, what’s happening with the Roosevelt Boulevard SEPTA project, and how – maybe most controversially – he says people should go to the Northeast for the best and cheapest restaurants in the city. NoLibs Business Owners Fuming Over Temporary Bus Terminal
When Greyhound shuttered its 35-year-old bus station on Filbert Street in 2023, inter-city buses shifted to curbside service on the corner of Sixth and Market Streets. But that location had no bathrooms, places to sit, or shelter. So the city opened what was supposed to be a temporary location along Spring Garden Street near Front Street in Northern Liberties. But more than a year later, the temporary bus stop is still there, and business owners are fuming. They say passengers are constantly coming through their doors to use – and abuse – their bathrooms. They also have complaints about traffic safety, trash, and parking. Thoughts on where a permanent bus terminal should go?
