Abortion Access & Voting Rights on the Ballot Right Now

On the ballot for the Nov. 4 election are a bunch of judges, two candidates for District Attorney, and — maybe most importantly — three Supreme Court justices, who are up for what’s known as “retention.” If they win, they keep their seats and Democrats will continue to control Pennsylvania’s court. If they lose, changes could be on the way on everything from abortion access to election law — potentially affecting congressional and presidential elections for the near future. Mallory Falk from our sister podcast City Cast Pittsburgh talks with SpotlightPA's capitol reporter Stephen Caruso about this race here in the Commonwealth and why so much money is involved. Is Our State Government Broken? Senator Saval Explains Budget Crisis

Our state budget was due 107 days ago. Pennsylvania is now the only state in the country with legislators who haven’t approved an annual spending plan. And that has big implications: We can’t fund schools or nonprofits, and the rape crisis center in our city had to shut down its services. Why is this happening? State Sen. Nikil Saval represents parts of South Philly, Center City, Southwest Philly, and the River Wards, and he explains to host Trenae Nuri what’s been happening – or not – in Harrisburg. Tipping Culture in Philly is Out of Control

Tipping culture has changed dramatically in Philly. There’s flip screens to tip the barista at the coffee shop, and sometimes a 25% gratuity built into your check at a restaurant. Overdose Deaths Are Down. How is Philly Handling the Crisis Differently?

We learned this week that there’s some good news when it comes to the city’s opioid crisis: Overdose deaths were down the last two years – and the rate this year is decreasing, too. This comes as the city changes course in how it handles the drug crisis. Host Trenae Nuri talks with Emily Rizzo, Kensington Voice accountability reporter, about this new approach and if it's working. She breaks down a new drug recovery housing facility that was opened by Mayor Cherelle Parker in the Northeast, which the majority of funds from a legal settlement with pharmaceutical companies that sold opioids are going to support. Emily also breaks down why certain service providers are being kicked off the streets of Kensington, which has been the epicenter of the crisis. And how a new expedited court aims to get people into treatment immediately. Read more of Emily's work at Kensington Voice here. How South Street Became Philly's Party Spot

South Street is where you go when you’re visiting from out of town, where you go when you’re a suburban kid looking for some counter-cultural grittiness, and where you go see your favorite band at the TLA and eat your favorite cheesesteak at Jim’s afterward. In the second part of our series on Philly's most iconic street, we’re looking at what has drawn people to South Street for centuries: Entertainment. Host Trenae Nuri speaks with legendary Philly DJ Cosmo Baker, Philly Jazz Legacy Project consulting archivist Jack McCarthy, Bob & Barbara’s owner Jack Prince, author David Bradley (whose book South Street is republishing next year), and Odunde CEO Bumi Fernandez-West. Also be sure to check back and listen to yesterday’s show to hear about the fascinating tumultuous history of South Street going back to colonial days. What’s your favorite South Street memory? The Fights That Made South Street Iconic

Today is the launch of our three-part series on the history and future of Philly's most iconic street: South Street. You've probably danced and shopped on it. Host Trenae Nuri interviews political scientist Richardson Dilworth, journalist Dan Biddle, and Selena Austin of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Closing Stores Early is the New Plan to Reduce Crime

In our weekly Wednesday politics episode we’re taking a look at a business curfew bill aimed at curbing violence around businesses in Kensington, Germantown, Mt. Airy and parts of North Philly. If the bill sponsored by Council Member Quetcy Lozada is signed into law, businesses in these areas will be forced to close between 11pm and 6am. It’s a crackdown on what the city calls “nuisance” businesses. But a group of business leaders don’t want this curfew. They say it’s going to hurt the way they make money. Philly’s mass transit system has been upended. The first wave of SEPTA service cuts went into effect yesterday, but there will be more soon and fares will increase on September 1. What the Future Holds for McGlinchey's and Philly's Smoking Bars

This week, news broke that McGlinchey’s would close permanently after tomorrow. But the owner, Sheldon Sokol, told Philadelphia Business Journal, he wants to stay open but close for a vacation at the end of the week, then sell the bar and retire. So what’s all the fuss about this place? McGlinchey’s is a long-standing dive bar on South 15th Street downtown. It’s also one of the few bars that still allows customers to smoke, despite a 2008 ban on smoking in most indoor spaces. We’re listening back to a 2023 conversation with host Trenae Nuri, Ali Mohsen, former food and beverage reporter for Billy Penn, and Sokol about the bar’s history, culture, and more broadly the policies of smoking bars in Philly.
