S1 Ep 27The Back to the Future Trilogy- Episode 27
EPodcast Audience! You gotta come back with us! Where you ask?..BACK TO THE FUTURE! This week, in honor of Back to the Future Day 2016 (October 21st-The Day Marty and Doc land in the future) we decided to take a look back at the franchise that introduced us to hover boards, self lacing Nikes, and Donald Trump....I mean Biff Tannen. So grab your Gray's Sports Almanac and refuel your Mr. Fusion as we gun this podcast up to 88mph and explore the world of Back to the Future! Movie News! Tommy Wiseau, Director of cult classic, The Room to star in new film, Best F(r)iends The Back to the Future Trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990) Back to the Future (1985) Written by both Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale and centered on the idea of "what if you could go back and see what your parents were like as teenagers." No studio wanted this film. Disney did show interest until they saw certain incestual tones in the screenplay (ie. Marty and Lorraine McFly). Zemeckis directed Romancing the Stone which was a huge success and ultimately led to his directing Back to the Future. Eric Stolz originally was cast as Marty McFly. However, Stoltz portrayed a very morose Marty that ultimately was counter to the vision that Gale and Zemeckis had. Michael J. Fox was brought in and brought a lighter and comedic tone to the character of Marty. The shooting schedule was grueling for Fox who would shoot Back to the Future at night and Family Ties during the day. Back to the Future-Take Aways Film is more about George McFly's transition from doormat to self confidence rather than Marty's journey. One of the biggest issues with the film is that it creates plot points for Marty yet fails to deliver. Marty never is shown gaining the confidence to send in his demo to the record company. Robert Zemeckis is not that great at diversity. Mayor Goldie Wilson is a corrupt politician. Rock and Roll is gifted to Chuck Berry by Marty McFly. Back to the Future: Part II (1989) Centers on Doc and Marty travelling 15 years into the future to stop an incident from occurring with Marty's kids that would destroy his family. Ultimately, they are success and create a secondary plot in which future Biff steals the time machine and changes the past and creates a dystopian 1985. Cartoon version of the original film. Relies on goofy future tech and style as well as a goofy Donald Trump-esque dystopian present. Light on plot. Does the job that a sequel should do by expanding the mythos of the original. Plot starts to focus more on Marty and the repercussions of his short temper. This movie is full of plot holes- See John's extensive list at 52:17 Plot holes can be resolved with the application "SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF." Also, IT'S A FUCKING TIME TRAVEL MOVIE. Back to the Future: Part III (1990) Dumbest of the three. The plot centers on Marty and Doc Brown being stuck in the old west after the events of the 2nd film and their journey to get back to 1985 before Mad Dog Tannen, an ancestor of Biff's, shoots and murders Doc over a matter of 80 dollars. Secondary plot, deals with Doc falling in love with school teacher, Clara Clayton. The time machine is ultimately destroyed after Marty makes it back to 1985. Doc Brown stays in 1885 with Clara. Doc Brown then comes back from 1885 with a brand new time machine made out of a train----which is completely counter to his "I should have never invented that infernal time machine" logic. The guess is that this was tacked on to lead into the Back to the Future cartoon. Final Thoughts First film is a near flawless movie. Sequels are ok, but not great and definitely do not hold up nearly as well as the original film.
S1 Ep 26Vampire Movies – Episode 26
EWelcome children of the night! This week, Brian, John, and Elaine regale us with the long and storied history of the vampire film and its place in horror cinema. We will try to answer some of the big questions associated with vampire movies, like how in less than 100 years we can go from blood thirsty, sex obsessed, gothic romantics to sparkly hipster vampires that simply "suck". So grab your holy water and sharpen your wood stakes as we crack open the crypt on the history of vampire films. Movie News! Blumhouse Productions Releases Awesome Trailer for Jordan Peele's Get Out Vampire Movies Vampire History Most of the cinematic vampires can be traced back to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Dracula was based on an amalgamation of different vampire myths and legends dating back to the dark ages. Vlad the Impaler Countess Elizabeth Bathory Vampires are based on a misunderstanding of how death and decomposition works. Vampires are also symbols of our feelings of lust, the sacred nature of blood, fears of foreigners, fear of venlarial disease. Vampires at the Dawn of Cinema Nosferatu (1922) an unofficial production of Dracula is considered to be the first vampire film. Murnau's Count Orlock terrified audiences with rat like features and is far removed from the dashing count later introduced. Excellent example of German Expressionist filmmaking. Universal Monsters of the 30's & 40's Bela Lugosi's Dracula featured the first cinematic version of the dashing romantic count. Director, Todd Browning, based his film more on the broadway play rather than the Bram Stoker book. 1931's Dracula is more of a filmed version of the play. There really isn't a lot of variation in the cinematography. A lot of wide angles and not a whole lot of movement within the frame. Interesting fact, the Spanish language version of Dracula features more creativity in cinematography and visual effects for its time. Hammer Horror and the Rise of Blood and Sex In the 1950's, the UK's Hammer Studios releases Horror of Dracula, a Dracula film in color featuring a vampire that drinks blood on camera and is far more sexual than previous incarnations. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing become the archetypes for Count Dracula and Van Helsing respectively. Exploitation Vampires in the 70's The 70's saw the rise of exploitation vampire films with movies like Blacula, Andy Warhol's Blood for Dracula, George Romero's Martin, and Tobe Hooper's Salem's Lot. Anne Rice Vampires are introduced. The vampire now is more of a self reflective creature that contemplates their immortality rather than just being a bloodthirsty monster. Mixed Bag for The 80's Vampires now had to compete with the popular slasher films of the decade. Goofy vampire movies became popular. Once Bitten Vampire's Kiss My Best Friend's a Vampire Vampire films reflected a more comedic tone due to the the association of blood and the AIDS epidemic. Vampires also took a much darker and bloodier turn, yet stayed away from the gothic horror roots, with movies like The Lost Boys and Near Dark. 1990's Buffy and the Return of Dracula The 90's brought a new twist of the vampire myth with Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer film and tv series. Notable for changing the role of a male vampire slayer into a female. Gothic horror returned to the screen in 1992 with Bram Stoker's Dracula- Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Notable for being the first major film to be digitally edited. The film saved Francis Ford Coppola's production company, American Zoetrope, from going out of business. All effects were done in camera, no digital effects. Led to a resurgence in gothic horror films with Frankens...

S1 Ep 24Blair Witch (2016)- Movie Review- Episode 24
EThis week, Brian, John, and Elaine grab their backpacks and old camcorders as they venture into the woods to review Blair Witch (2016), the sequel to the 1999 found footage classic, The Blair Witch Project. Does the sequel hold up to the original or does it fall in line with other nostalgia-based sequels...sucking terribly. So grab your stick people and dust off your shaky cam as we dive into our film review of Blair Witch (2016). Movie News! Upcoming Films Coming From Controversial Filmmakers Nate Parker- Director of The Birth of a Nation Mel Gibson - Director of Hacksaw Ridge Clint Eastwood - Director of Sully BONUS NEWS STORY!- Michael Bay says new Transformers film will feature alternative WWII setting, complete with Hitler and Winston Churchill Blair Witch (2016) The Blair Witch Project Came out in 1999 when the internet was still on dial up and we didn't know what the hell it was. Revolutionary marketing strategy. First real example of viral internet marketing. Centered around the idea that the events in the film were "real". One of the first commercially viable "Found Footage" Horror Films. Cannibal Holocaust was the first. Film cost $60,000 to make and grossed over 140 million dollars. Echoes the hysteria caused by Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds. Blair Witch (2016) 3rd sequel in the franchise- ignore that whole Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2- it's really bad. The film is a sequel/reboot that recycles a lot of the same scares and plot. This movie may cause "Rage-mares" A nightmare caused by the frustration of watching a terrible movie. Blair Witch - Plot The plot deals with James, the brother of Heather Donahue from the first film, searching for his sister after receiving a youtube clip from a contact in Burketsville that purportedly shows his sister alive after missing and presumed dead for 22 years. James and his Scooby Doo gang of friends-- Lisa: The filmmaker and will they/won't me female friend, Ashley: Lisa's friend, Peter: Lisa's boyfriend and James friend that seems to have serious anger issues-- decide to travel to Burketsville, meet up with James' contact, and search for Heather. Hilarity ensues as the group end up getting lost despite having all the GPS filmmaking tech including drones, ear cameras, and HD video gear. For 90 minutes, each member of the Scooby Doo gang gets bumped off by the Blair Witch. Scooby Doo Gang- Deaths Talia- Death by stick person voodoo doll snapping. Ashley- Gets an infected foot wound that has weird maggot-like creature in it. Lightning hits tree and kills her too. Peter- Crushed by falling tree Laine- Not dead- but becomes The Renfield to The Blair Witch. James- Death by looking at the Blair Witch after hearing his sister's voice. Lisa- Death by looking at the Blair Witch after hearing James's voice. Final Thoughts All the subtlety of the first film is now gone as The Blair Witch is replaced by a creepy looking monster, loud and obnoxious noises, and a stupid alien light show. The film is utterly devoid of consistent plot and character development. In a horror film, we need to know and care about the characters so that we empathize with the terror in the film. Don't ever say in a horror movie that you're "going to get some firewood." You will die shortly after. The movie as a whole is very hard to follow. Making a shitty film for cheap and seeing a gross of double does not mean it is a good film. Doesn't take into account marketing costs. Amount of theaters that the film plays in. S1 Ep 23Captain America: Civil War (2016)- Movie Review-Episode 23
EThis week Brian, John, and Elaine wade through the waist deep swamp of comic book/film lore as we review Captain America: Civil War and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. We try to understand some of the subtle nuances of Cap's new outing such as Baron Zemo's Rube Goldberg-esque plan for revenge against The Avengers....because reasons. Or why does every location change in the film come complete with giant stylized text? So pick your side in this glorified game of dodgeball with superheroes as we tackle Captain America: Civil War. Movie News! CBS Airs Controversial Documentary on the Murder of JonBenet Ramsey Captain America: Civil War (2016) The Good This is ultimately the sequel to The Avengers that we should have had. Deals with complex themes Should super powered heroes be under government control? The stakes within the film keep getting higher and higher with each scene. Ratcheting up the tension until we get to the reveal that Bucky Barnes killed Tony Stark's parents. Zemo is able to finish what Ultron started- tearing The Avengers apart from the inside. The Bad MASSIVE TITLE SLATES FOR EACH LOCATION CHANGE!!! Seriously do we need a title slate for Cleveland? Weird forced relationship between Sharon Carter and Cap. No real chemistry. Captain America still has his V Card. Zemo's bizarre Rube Goldberg plan for revenge that relies on way too many things ( like proper timing and reactions) to be successful. The Marvel Cinematic Universe Majority of the movies are fairly formulaic. These movies should exist on their own merit AND exist within the overall universe. Current Marvel films rely heavily on prior knowledge from other media (comics/tv shows) to understand what is happening in the films. These movies also seem more like 2 hour long trailers for the next phase of films without really telling a complete story. Avengers: Age of Ultron was a checklist for Infinity War. Still no conclusion to the plot thread of whether Red Skull is dead or not. Final Thoughts Captain America: Civil War is a solid film but suffers from the requirement that the audience have prior knowledge of the previous Marvel Films/Comics. Again, Marvel has a villain problem. Zemo is an ok villain but he still is no where near the level of Loki Prediction: The 2020 reboot to Spiderman will feature the role of Aunt May played by a giant titty. S1 Ep 22Modern Film Classics – Episode 22
EThis week, Brian, John, and Elaine get cerebral by examining the age old question: What makes a modern classic in film? S1 Ep 21Sleepaway Camp (1983)- Movie Review- Episode 21
ESchool's back in session which means Summer is wrapping up. So Brian, John, and Elaine take one last look at one of the hallmarks of summer fun; summer camp...specifically, the 1983 Friday the 13th rip off, Sleepaway Camp. Does Sleepaway Camp belong among the Pantheon of Utter Shit or is it just a goofy fun b movie? Grab your sleeping bag, swim shorts, and communal shower flip flops as we dive into this toasted marshmallow of B movie goodness. Movie News! Animators Report Pay Disputes/Mistreatment During Production of Sausage Party Sleepaway Camp (1983) Classic 1980's Slasher...with a Twist This movie, despite being a very obvious Friday the 13th rip off uses the interesting idea of sexuality of the killer as the motivation for the murders. The idea of Angela being transgendered was extremely controversial for the time. This extra layer of gender confusion and reaction to homosexuality in the 80's does make this movie stand out among other slashers B Movie Tropes God awful acting....With the exception of Aunt Martha played by Desiree Gould. Fantastic practical makeup effects for a low budget film. Lots and lots of misdirection of who the killer is. Plot is fairly terrible....but not as bad as other slasher films. Some really terrible lines of dialogue. Total Kills 2 deaths by speedboat collision 1 death by scalding by boiling water 1 death by drowning 1 death by beehive dropped on head/stung by bees 1 death by knife impalment in shower and sliced open 4 deaths by being hacked apart in sleeping bag 1 death by pillow smothering/ impaled through vagina with hot hair curling iron. 1 death by arrow shot through throat 1 death by decapitation Total Kills-13 Sequels Spawned 4 sequels and a rebooted sequel Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers starred Bruce Springsteen's sister, Pamela Springsteen. Part II is more of a goofy murder by numbers film with more focus on elaborate deaths and less on the gender identity issues of the first film. Final Thoughts Sleepaway Camp is a very fun B movie It's focus on using transgender and homosexual themes in a traditional slasher film make it stand out among a crowded field of Friday the 13th wannabes. Stick with the original, stay away from the sequels Sleepaway Camp (1983)- Trailer Subscribe / Rate / Review Subscribe today to never miss an episode. S1 Ep 20Suicide Squad (2016)- Movie Review- Episode 20
EWe're back!! After a 2 week hiatus mainly due to a nasty case of Bronchitis and food poisoning, we're back and better than ever. This week we pay homage to the passing of Willy Wonka himself; the great Gene Wilder. We also dive head first into the newest pile of franchise crapolla with David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Does DC redeem themselves for Batman v Superman with the anti hero squad of goofy cartoon characters mixed with sucker punch visuals? We'll find out today! Movie News! Legendary Actor Gene Wilder Passes Away at 83 Suicide Squad (2016) Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen! This movie smells of studio fuckery. Warner Bros and DC were scared to death by the reaction to Batman v Superman. Their solution was to recut the film by adding more humor and making it much lighter than the original darker cut. Suicide Squad only consists of Will Smith and Margot Robbie Despite being a movie about a group of anti heroes we end up with a 90 minute movie only about Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is pointless and only serves to be the so called "Sexy Lamp." I am personally sick and tired of the "I've gotta do right by my daughter" motivation for every villain/anti-hero. It is played out and dumb. Weak-ass Villains Viola Davis is a fantastic actress but as Amanda Waller she is utterly wasted. Amander Waller has already been done right in animated form (voiced by CCH Pounder) as well as in live action on Arrow. So why the fuck up with the live action film? The Enchantress is a weak villain who's big power is throwing goo monsters at the Suicide Squad. An iTunes Playlist is not a Soundtrack Seriously, just because you can string together a bunch of popular songs doesn't mean that is a soundtrack. Jared Leto Ruined Method Acting Dear Jared Leto, you are not Heath Ledger and no matter how many used condoms or dead pigs you prank your co stars with, you will never touch the level that Heath Ledger achieved with his performance of The Joker. This Joker is extremely weak and forgettable. The movie itself skips over the need for The Joker in the first place. The tone of The Joker and the movie is basically MTV scissored Hot Topic. Final Thoughts Congratulations DC and Warner Bros., You fucked up again!! This movie is the reason we do not deserve good movies. This film grossed fairly well in theaters and will basically be proof to Hollywood that churning out shit is ok despite critics ripping it apart. S1 Ep 19Ghostbusters (2016) Movie Review-Part 2- Episode 19
EReady for seconds? This week, Brian, John, and Elaine deliver part 2 of our epic Ghostbusters (2016) review. We get into more of the nitty gritty with this controversial film, like why the technology has improved with special effects since 1984 yet we end up with shitty looking ghosts in this new one. Or why does Slimer have a Slimer Girlfriend? Also, what is with the intense amount of blatant product placement? Pringles anyone? So sit back with your green twinkles and ecto cooler as we plow through part 2 of our Ghostbusters (2016) review. Movie News! No movie news this week. Ghostbusters (2016) Disclaimer--AGAIN! In light of the controversial nature of the film, we felt it was necessary to give a bit of a disclaimer on our review. Our review of the film is an HONEST review. All three of us watched the film and came to our own conclusions. This is our opinion, you can agree or disagree with it. But we welcome discorse and debate. Keep in mind, this is only a movie. If the energy used to battle this movie was used to combat real sexism (ie. pay equality, etc.) a lot of those problems could be dealt with. Special Effects...BLAH! Over 30 years later and despite technical advancements you actually have ghosts looking worse than the originals. Discount Scooby Doo ghosts Pull off one of the ghost's heads and you will find Paul Feig complaining about how he would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling fans. Product placement Continuing the product placement circle jerk of modern films, pringles, papa johns pizza, twinkies, and ecto cooler are clearly necessary for fighting ghosts. Movie definitely had a lot cut out Chris Hemsworth freezes the cops and military at the end in a weird disco dance move, setting up what would have been a very funny dance number.....but no you don't get that until the end credit sequence cause you know...reasons. Ending villain again is really terrible "Nerdzer" All the power of Gozer but a nerd. Given how powerful this one particular ghost is, why does he have to jump into Chris Hemsworth's body to begin with to quite literally flip a switch? Things that don't make fucking sense in the last act Ghost Zone bullshit. Driving around New York City with a fucking nuke on top of your car. Hair turning white because of being in the Ghost Zone. No tension between Abby and Erin to warrant the ending Ghost Zone sacrifice. Final Thoughts This movie, despite controversy, will ultimately be forgotten. It is summer fluff. The single silver lining to this film is that this movie does have positive feminist roles in an industry that continually sexualizes women. If Paul Feig wanted to proved the detractors wrong, make a better fucking film. The "controversy" in this film was manufactured. Audiences have reached a saturation point where we are ultimately tired of remakes and reboots manufactured to take advantage of nostalgia. S1 Ep 18Ghostbusters (2016) Movie Review-Part 1- Episode 18
ETHE WAIT IS OVER! This week, Brian, John, and Elaine deliver part 1 of our epic Ghostbusters (2016) review. This movie has been a lighting rod of controversy, setting up a war between fans of the original and Director Paul Feig and cast; with cries of "misogyny" and "femi-nazi" being thrown from various groups over the movie. This movie is without a doubt the proverbial hornet's nest of cinema....And we are geared up to kick said hornet's nest very very hard. So grab your proton pack, don't cross the streams, and enjoy part 1 of our epic 2 part review of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters. Movie News! Batman: The Killing Joke Movie - Controversy grows over treatment of Batgirl in new animated feature film based on classic comic book. Ghostbusters (2016) Disclaimer In light of the controversial nature of the film, we felt it was necessary to give a bit of a disclaimer on our review. Our review of the film is an HONEST review. All three of us watched the film and came to our own conclusions. This is our opinion, you can agree or disagree with it. But we welcome discorse and debate. Keep in mind, this is only a movie. If the energry used to battle this movie was used to combat real sexism (ie. pay equality, etc.) a lot of those problems could be dealt with. Ghostbusters is a "meh" movie Brian and John hated it. Elaine didn't love it, but also didn't hate it Not nearly as terrible as the trailers lead us to believe. Cameos were pointless You could set your watch to the next cameo from an original cast member (estimated around 15-20 mins). Bill Murray quite literally phoned in his performance. Annie Potts was the only good cameo. The cameos took you out of the movie and reminded you that 1. this is in fact a remake. And 2. that the original is far superior and acts as a cloud over the movie. Movie says "fuck you" to fans of the original while still marketing to them Studio manufactured the controversy by deleting youtube comments of anyone critical and only allowing sexist comments to pump up the manufactured narrative of sexism. The villain in the movie is the proverbial overweight, pasty, ghostbusters fan that the controversy was based around. To add insult to injury, the villain then turns into a a giant killer version of the Ghostbusters logo that is defeated by being shot in the dick. Sexism in the film The film does present men as being assholes or idiots. The positive side of this is that it does give male audiences a taste of some of the treatment that women deal with in other films. This does unfortunately get in the way of the story. Terrible writing and directing The female leads are fantastic comedians in their own right, but are hindered by terrible writing and directing. The movie suffers from very predictable and unfunny writing (ie: queef joke / wanton running gag) Direction is more akin to a Saturday Night Live improv sketch rather than a Ghostbusters movie. Holtzman (Kate McKinnon) shines through a lot of the bullshit, but unfortunately ends up coming across as overly goofy by the middle of the film. There are wasted opportunities to turn the movie into something positive. The mention of the fake ghost adventures tv show in a scene of the movie could have been used to break out into a much more compelling and a better story all around. PART 2 NEXT WEEK!!! S1 Ep 17Gene Blalock of Seraph Films LLC – Interview – Episode 17
EThis week Brian sits down for another featured interview; this time with award winning filmmaker and founder of Seraph Films LLC, Gene Blalock. Gene talks about his filmmaking career and how his films although mostly based in the horror genre, surpass the genre tropes by featuring a strong emphasis on character and storytelling. Known primarily for his popular short horror films including the Horror Haiku Series, Visions, and Unlucky Girl he is also able to pivot from the horror genre to crafting touching and compelling films such as To Kristen with Love and A Second Chance at Christmas. Movie News! No movie news this week. Gene Blalock Interview Film School vs. No Film School Seraph Films began as a group of friends making short films for the sake of telling stories. While film school does have the benefits of networking and access to equipment, going out and making films is the most important thing. People are the magic behind Seraph Films Seraph films is what it is based on the power of the collaboration and fostering passionate creativity. Film by it's very nature is a collaborative art. Its not a solo art like painting or sculpture. No place for egos. Budget is the biggest challenge Write stories and characters for the budget you have not the budget you wish you had. Know your limits and play to your strengths. There are alternatives to film festivals Seraph Films primarily is distributed via youtube and has amassed a massive following of subscribers. Film festivals promise a laurel and reviews, but the amount of money, planning, travel may not pay off with the exception of getting that laurel. Short Films Short films allow you to develop as a filmmaker. You can make as many mistakes as you want and apply what you have learned to the next film, building up your skills along the way. Horror is about the payoff Horror is about the build up to the payoff. Developing the characters and building the world with compelling storytelling all tie into the rising tension and ultimately the payoff for the audience. S1 Ep 16Steve Rudzinski of Silver Spotlight Films – Interview – Episode 16
EThis week Brian sits down for a featured interview with one of the best genre bending indie filmmakers out there; Writer, Director, and Spider-Man (seriously): Steve Rudzinski of Silver Spotlight Films. Steve talks about his filmmaking journey and his successes with such films as Everyone Must Die, Captain Z and the Terror of Leviathan, Super Task Force One, and his newest film currently in post production, CarousHELL. Movie News! No movie news this week. Steve Rudzinski Interview Find your style During his filmmaking career, Steve Rudzinski found his "style" of combining comedy with horror. Steve has also managed to keep the public guessing by changing up the genres with each film. Jumping from a slasher film, to a tokusatsu film, to a pirate adventure film, and so on. The mechanics of combining comedy and horror Steve's approach is to have fun with horror. He isn't trying to make a brooding thriller. His strength is creating likable insane characters that you care about and root for. Mapping out the character's relationships is ultimately how you develop complex three dimensional characters that the audience can relate to. Let your actors do what they need to to bring the characters to life. Film is a business as well as art Film is still a product and you as the filmmaker need to understand the big picture instead of getting caught up on every little detail that may set you behind Finding financing is tough. Sometimes, as in the case of CarousHELL, you get lucky at Christmas Parties and find investors who believe in you and your project. Film festivals are not always the be all end all way of getting your movie out. Soft release your film with dvds at a premiere, do conventions, and generate buzz through reviews and interviews that you then can share when approaching a distributor. Steve is also Spider-Man Steve's day job is working as a official Marvel super hero actor who has played Spider-Man, Iron Man, etc. So he quite literally is Spider-Man. Women apparently really really really like Spider-Man. Silver Spotlight Films Timeline Check out Silver Spotlight Films at their official website. S1 Ep 15Return of the Sequel Strikes Back Part Dos – Episode 15
EThe gang goes off book on an episode dissecting and even at times eviscerating the common film sequel. Are these movies strictly bloated cash cows that have always been terrible or are there a few gems out there? How does the common practice of universe building effect these sequels? We answer these questions and more on this open forum episode that could go anywhere. Movie News! CBS/Paramount announces crushing guidelines for Star Trek fan films Sequels - Key Points What is the purpose of the sequel? Continue the story of the original. To make more money Serialized format (ie: Batman) Built as a sequel story (Star Wars Trilogy) More story to tell that couldn't fit in the original. The Catch 22 of Sequels The common idea is that sequels are ripped for being to derivative of the original and adding nothing new, yet when they are new and original they are criticized for not having the feeling of the original. What makes a good sequel Maintaining what works and building upon it. No need to reinvent the wheel. Sequels should add something new but stay within the same universe established in the original. What makes a terrible sequel Being made by Joel Schumacher Style over substance "Check list" sequels made for the purpose of universe building and teasing more sequels. Some sequels surpass the original Movies like The Godfather Part 2 and Terminator 2 are able to successfully come into their own, outside of the original, and add enough to the story that the characters evolve and change from the original. S1 Ep 14Johnny Daggers of Blood on the Reel – Interview – Episode 14
EWe take a break from the summer movie review grind and sit down with filmmaker, model, author, and friend; Johnny Daggers of DaggerVision Films. Johnny talks about his new film Blood on the Reel, a peek into the trials and tribulations of independent horror filmmakers. Johnny also gives us insight into his own personal filmmaking journey and where he sees it heading with feature films and a new novel. Movie News! No movie news this week. Johnny Daggers Interview Daggervision Beginnings Brian and Johnny go way back as they were partners in Daggervision Films during the early days. The Cinema Psychos Show is what it is due to Daggervision Films Horror Talk Radio. Blood on the Reel The documentary shows what indie horror filmmakers have to go through to be successful. Without technology the documentary wouldn't exist. Johnny directed interviews with filmmakers all over the world through skype. The film is successful in making the audience empathize with the struggles and successes that indie filmmakers have to go through. Follow your blood Your passion will drive you to what you should do. Johnny brought up a good point how after soul searching he found that filmmaking was in his blood. Noctambulist New film similar to 1920's German expressionist films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu. Too much product- Not enough eyeballs Even with services like Amazon Video Direct, Vimeo, etc. it is still hard for indie filmmakers to get the distribution necessary to be successful. Technology has made it easier to make a high quality film- iphones can shoot in 2k now. But that is creating an influx of too many films. Cats like to screw with podcast interviews Another cat incident happened during the podcast recording. This time it was Johnny's cat that decided to jump outside in the middle of the interview. Gotta love the kitties. S1 Ep 13Independence Day: Regurgitation – Movie Review – Episode 13
EHappy Birthday America! In the spirit of the Fourth of July weekend, we are diving head first into the proverbial puke pile that is Independence Day: Resurgence. Some of the questions we try answer are how can a movie franchise go from having the best movie president (Bill Pulman) to having the absolute worst movie president (Sela Ward). Also, did the aliens finally renew their subscription to Norton Anti Virus or will pornography laced with computer viruses be the hero for earth once again. We'll find out today!! Movie News! Star Trek's Anton Yelchin passes away at 27 in freak auto accident. Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) Movie makes zero sense Supposedly peaceful society without war builds big intergalactic weapons of war Where was the resistance sphere alien 20 years ago during the first alien attack? Missing memorable characters ID4's major draw was an ensemble cast of memorable characters. Resurgence features majority of the characters phoning in performances for 2 hours. Vivica A. Fox was literally brought back to die. CGI Overload CGI is reminiscent of the Sci Fi Channel Original Movies produced by The Asylum. ID4 had a slow burn approach to the effects, no alien explosions until 40 mins in. Resurgence kicks it off right off the bat and leaves the audience feeling nothing. Worst Movie President.....EVER!! Sela Ward quite literally is the dumbest president ever. She ignores the advice from the one guy who destroyed the aliens the first time around and shoots a peaceful alien ship. Delays investigating the crashed ship instead to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the first alien attack. No monument to Russell Case (Randy Quaid) Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK!?! Ending is terrible Major explosion of the alien queen's ship is cut out. We get a shot of Jeff Goldblum instead.....Seriously, Fuck you Roland Emmerich. You had one job and that was to show explosions and you can't even do that right. President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) sacrifices himself for nothing as the queen survives the explosion of her ship. Ending promises the movie that we should have had. Why couldn't Independence Day: Resurgence be about taking the fight to the alien homeworld? Would have been much more interesting than this pile of garbage. Subscribe / Rate / Review Subscribe today to never miss an episode. S1 Ep 122016 Summer Movie Preview – Episode 12
trailerEGrab your sunscreen and beach blanket; Brian, John, and Elaine give you an overview of some of the potential stinkers and gems from the tentpoles of the summer blockbuster season. Movie News! No movie news this week. SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW- 2016 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows Release Date: June 3rd Key Points Good Points Playing major fan service with the inclusion of classic Turtles characters: Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang from Dimension X. That's honestly the only half decent parts "Meh" Points It's a sequel to a movie nobody wanted More Michael Bay CGI fuckery with weird ass looking Turtles. More pandering to the nostalgia of Turtles past. Casey Jones is now a pretty boy played by Stephen Amell (still awesome as Green Arrow) rather than a crazy street person played by Elias Koteas. Independence Day: Resurgence Release Date: June 24th Key Points Good Points Finally delivering on a sequel to an amazing film after 20 years. Original cast is mostly back except for good point #3 No Will Smith--"He's dead Jim". "Meh" Points Prepare for CGI overload as the "present" in the ID4 universe is a weird hybrid between our world and Blade Runner. How is Brent Spiner alive in the movie when his character (Dr. Okum) was killed off in the first movie. Won't a computer virus just kill off the aliens again or have they finally upgraded their AVG Anti- Virus Software from the demo version. Liam Hemsworth.....yup that's a meh point right there. Ghostbusters Release Date: July 15th Key Points Good Points There are none. SIN Points This is the biggest example of the reboot that no one wanted. Where do you start in trying to explain how horrible this shit bomb truly will be. Biggest Sin- putting fantastic comedic actors like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy in a bastardized version of one of the best comedies ever made. Sin 2- Director, Paul Feig feeding the misguided flames of uber feminists continual bullying of anyone who happens to think that this movie sucks. Having an affection for the original 1984 film and seeing, based on trailers, how completely fucked up the film franchise you love has become DOES NOT make you a bigot or a misogynist and to push that narrative weakens the argument against real bigotry and misogyny by trivializing it Sin 3- The ghost effects look like Scooby Doo rip offs. The original Ghostbusters had ghosts that were made using practical effects and stop motion that looked truly terrifying. These new ghosts look like something out of a Joel Schumacher Batman movie. Sin 4- Moving forward with this movie shortly after Harold Ramis passes away after he tried for 20 years to get a sequel made. Suicide Squad Release Date: August 5th Key Points Good Points Margot Robbie definitely channels the madness of Harley Quinn Trailer seems to mix the dark depressing nature of Batman v Superman with comedic elements. "Meh" Points Will this movie be too dark? Will Jared Leto's joker jump the proverbial shark and come across as ridiculous? Will Smith is in this unfortunately. Playing the Joker after Heath Ledger could be considered career suicide. Is it impossible to follow up that performance? Sausage Party Release Date: August 11th
S1 Ep 11X-Men Apocalypse – Movie Review – Episode 11
EBrian, John and Elaine flex their secret mutant movie powers and tackle the latest entry into the ever expanding and ever confusing continuity X-Men film series with Bryan Singer's X-men Apocalypse. Does the film hold up to the caliber of Day's of Future Past or First Class? Or are we looking at the likes of a Last Stand or Wolverine: Origins? Strap in and find out. Movie News! Lucasfilm orders reshoots for Star Wars: Rogue One. Is the film in trouble? X-Men Apocalypse - Key Points Good Points Very fun summer popcorn movie. Features a good amount of comic book source material (Dark Phoenix Saga/Age of Apocalypse). Lots of very pretty CGI (if you are into that sort of thing) "Meh" Points Not much joy in this movie as the characters are generally just going through the motions. Minimal 80's references as compared to Days of Future Past. Quicksilver's character arc sucks. He wastes a perfect moment to reveal to Magneto that he is his son when his entire motivation for the film was to tell him that he is his son. Apocalypse is wasted as a villain when compared to other media's interpretation (Age of Apocalypse and X-Men animated TV Show). General X-Men Continuity Fuckery Never revealed why Mystique was Striker at the end of Days of Future Past and how the real Striker got Wolverine. Apocalypse pretty much helps fix the glaring continuity problem from X-Men (2000) where Xavier mentions that Magneto helped build Cerebro. At the end of the film, Magneto and Jean Grey are seen rebuilding Xavier's mansion which includes Cerebro. Notable Movies Referenced TRAILER: NEXT WEEK: SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW!!!!!!!!! S1 Ep 10Tiptoes (2003) – Movie Review – Episode 10
EEvery once in a while you encounter a movie that quite literally boggles the mind and brings forth emotions like anger, rage, and befuddlement. Tiptoes (2003) is one of those movies. The gang inducts this Oldman, McConaughey, Beckinsale stinker into The Pantheon of Utter Shit. We try to answer the big question of what bet did these award winning actors lose that forced them to star in this shit bomb. Movie News! Michael Keaton rumored to star as "Vulture" in new Spider Man Reboot. Tiptoes - Key Points How did this movie get made? Seriously, how in the hell did this movie 1. attain actors with very distinguished careers and 2. attain the funding for it. The studio tried to dress up this movie with a trailer that reframes it as a "Romantic Comedy" yet it still is a very unbalanced and offensive drama. This was one of the crap roles that Peter Dinklage referred to in a recent commencement address. Oh and you really can only watch this movie drunk to get past the plot holes the size of the grand canyon. Actual lines of dialogue from the film Rolfe: "Little People Shit." Carol: "So you had a circle jerk with a bunch of little people? I would have loved to see that." Steven: "I need new chromosomes!!" **Punches wall** This is quite literally black face with little people Gary Oldman is a fantastic actor but this portrayal of a little person is just down right offensive. It is extremely difficult to watch the performance and take anything Oldman says seriously due to the fact that he is pretending to be a little person. This is another example of white washing in Hollywood. Look at Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's and the modern film, Gods of Egypt; putting name recognition above character/story. S1 Ep 9Super Mario Bros. The Movie – Movie Review – Episode 9
EThe gang straps in for an 8 bit barrage of utter shit in the form of movie adaptations of some of your most treasured video games; in particular Super Mario Bros. from 1993. We try to answers some of the most striking questions from the film like can you really trust the fungus and did this movie slowly kill Bob Hoskins. So grab your Powerglove (It's sooo bad!) and a mushroom or two as we dive into the world of horrible video game movies! Movie News! The Neon Demon causes a stir of walkouts and boos at The Cannes Film Festival. Super Mario Bros. - Key Points Video Game Bonafides John had a very typical upbringing going from the Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo, Genesis, Sega CD, etc. Elaine unfortunately lived a very video game deprived childhood and had to survive on the crumbs of computer games. Brian went from NES, to Genesis, and then to the monstrosity that was the 32X- the male enhancement drug for the Sega Genesis. Also, that fucking dog in Duck Hunt is the devil. What's with the Dinosaur Obsession? Super Mario Bros. dips into the trend in the early 90's of everything revolving around dinosaurs which seemed to climax around the release of Jurassic Park in the same year. This film has absolutely nothing to do with the video game. Aside from King Koopa stealing The Princess, the plot revolves around some meteorite that split the dimensions into our world and a dystopian dino obsessed world called Dinohatten and Koopa's desire to merge the dimensions using a piece of the meteorite.......still with me? This movie was so bad that Nintendo to this day refuses to license their games for movie adaptations. Bob Hoskins did not know that Mario was a video game character and he was injured multiple times on set. He was electrocuted, broke a finger, and nearly drowned. Trust the fungus--the real hero of the movie is a liquid latex looking fungus played by Lance Hendriksen of Pumpkinhead fame Video game movies are extremely difficult to adapt to films. The early games plots were simplistic button mashers which forced studios to create plots that ultimately had very little to do with the games themselves. Games nowadays have an easier time transitioning to film since the games themselves are now as fleshed out as most movies with complex characters and elaborate plots. Think of games like The Last of Us, LA Noir, and Uncharted. S1 Ep 8Ryan Haggerty of Blood on the Leaves – Interview – Episode 8
EThis week we take a short detour from our usual review-centric episodes and interview Cinematographer, Producer, and an all around great friend, Ryan Haggerty of Haggerty Media. Ryan will be discussing a new film premiering on June 1st called "Blood on the Leaves" that he has been involved with as well as his insights on the trials and tribulations that indie filmmakers go through to bring projects to life. Ryan Haggerty Interview- Key Points We quite literally did have the worst slum lord of all time Ryan and I lived in the worst basement apartment while we were in grad school. Complete with burst steam pipe, a giant hole in our laundry room, and fruit flies. "Dirt Grubs" do exist. Working together as a team yields better results Filmmaking by itself is a collaborative art. Working with others and retaining their input, along with revisions, yields only a stronger film in the end. Everything starts with a great story You have to have the best possible story to convince people to invest in your project. Fundraising relies on more than just creating a kickstater or indiegogo. You need to personally reach out to people through emails, phone calls, networking events, etc. Problems will occur down the line but it is important not to get bent out of shape and lose focus. Create an LLC for your film. It not only gives your film a professional feel to it, but it also makes accounting your funds and budgeting easier. Write your story for what you have. If you have access to free locations, props, costumes, etc. write those into your story from the beginning. It will save you cash once production starts. Distribution and marketing are a pain but are necessary Look at starting with local small theaters/coffeehouses in the area your project was filmed at to tap into the community that helped make the film possible. Some theaters will allow you to rent outright or do a 50/50 split of the ticket sales. For larger distribution, it still serves to talk to sales agents and distributors, although there is a lot you can still do on your own. Regardless of your distribution strategy, marketing ties everything together and ultimately is responsible for getting people to your screening. Notable Movies Referenced If you are in the Pittsburgh area, be sure to check out the premiere of Blood on the Leaves at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont on June 1st. S1 Ep 7The Rise of Nostalgia Fuckery – Episode 7
EThis week Brian, John, and Elaine tackle the gigantic rotting elephant in the room; REMAKES! We examine the new trend in the Hollywood remake factory; using nostalgia to attract both old and new audiences and how that quite literally is setup to crash and burn. Buckle up folks! It's gonna be a bumpy ride! Movie News! AMC Theaters and the "Tweet Seat" Backlash AMC Theaters dipped their toe into the idea of making a section of theaters open to texting and social media. Public backlash however was fierce as within 24 hours of the announcement, AMC Theaters walks back the idea and rededicated movie theaters as being "cell phone free" zones. Remakes- Key Points Hollywood is trying to Kill 2 Birds with 1 Stone The current crop of remakes aims at trying to appease die hard fans of the original material while trying to cater to the the 18-24 crowd that has never been exposed to the original source material and ultimately cannot stomach complex plots with character development. They desire explosions with just enough plot to move to the next scene as that is what they are used to. Wallstreet has Created a Risk Averse Filmmaking Atmosphere Due to Hollywood utilizing funding from Wallstreet for a number of films, the atmosphere now relies heavily on utilizing remakes of popular films from the past as well as franchises as opposed to investing in original screenplays where there is a chance that returns will be low. This ultimately breeds a continued lack of originality in studio films. Some Remakes are Good You heard me right. Sometimes changing the source material benefits the film. Cinematic original films of books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hellraiser, and the original Total Recall prove that literary remakes aren't all that bad. Good remakes require a decent gap of time from the original to be success. They also must be original enough to differentiate themselves from the source material but still pay homage to the original. S1 Ep 6Now and Then (1995) – Movie Review – Episode 6
EWe are jumping in our delorean, gunning it to 88mph, and traveling back to the year that gave us "The Rachel" hair cut and JNCO Jeans: 1995; to review the coming of age female dram-edy, Now and Then. We try to answers some of the more serious questions posed in the film such as, Can you get pregnant from french kissing? and is it ever a smart idea to jump into a storm drain in the middle of a storm? Movie News! RIP: Prince The music world lost another icon with the sudden death of Prince. Now and Then Key Points The "Stand by Me" for Women While Stand by Me balances coming of age comedy with the serious subject matter of death and male identity, Now and Then attempts to replicate that motif with 4 preteen girls embarking on a summer of adventure and a quest for independence. Touches on Complex Issues but Stops Short. The narrative touches on complex issues such as love, divorce, death, and friendship but fails to push deeper into how these very complex issues effect the characters. This is disappointing in that actors like Thora Birch, Christina Ricci, Gabby Hoffmann, and Asleigh Aston Moore are the heart and soul of the film but are not pushed further per the material. Grown up Versions of the Main Cast are a Waste of Time. Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore, Rita Wilson, and Rosie O'Donnell offer nothing more than marquee filler as they only appear on screen for 2 scenes. The conflict between the grown up versions is never addressed. We never know why these very close friends drifted apart as they grew into adulthood. An Exception to Most "Chick Flicks". Where most "chick flicks" fall into the romance trap, Now and Then does a fantastic job of steering away from that and focusing on positive female relationships. The women in this film are independent, strong, and come into their own without resorting to only talking about men. Notable Movies Referenced Future Episode!- Tiptoes (2003) Connect with us! S1 Ep 5Troll 2 (1990) – Movie Review – Episode 5
EWe're packing up the family camper and traveling to the humble hamlet of Nilbog! In our first entry of The Pantheon of Utter Shit, we examine the cinematic classic that is Troll 2. Brian, John and Elaine attempt to answer some of the most puzzling questions from this film; like why would goblins with sharp teeth need to convert humans to green veggie paste to eat them? And why would goblins be vegetarians to begin with?!! News in Movies! Anti-Vaxx Documentary pulled from Tribeca The Tribeca Film festival has decided to pull the controversial documentary, Vaxxed: From Cover up to Controversy after outrage from the public to its selection in the film festival. Troll 2 Key Points This movie is horrible---but the documentary is AMAZING! If you are going to watch this film, be sure to watch the documentary about the film as a companion piece; Best Worst Movie. Troll 1 Rip Off This movie has absolutely no relation to the original Troll 1. Like Zombi 2 which capitalized on the italian cut of Dawn of the Dead (Zombi), Troll 2 is an entirely different movie with no plot threads from the original. Oh you thought there were Trolls in Troll 2? No Trolls, just druid, vegetarian, goblins. Oh and they can take the form of redneck hillbillies with herpes sores on their face. Can Zack Snyder competently lead the DC Cinematic Universe with the introduction of the Justice League or are we facing a massive cinematic abortion? News in Movies! Batman v Superman Broke Hanz Zimmer Hanz Zimmer, the composer whose notable scores include The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and others decides to quit the superhero game after concluding work on Batman v Superman. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Key Points Jam packed full of crap The movie ultimately is jam packed full of so much fan service and plot threads that it becomes difficult to follow the narrative of the film. Inconsistent performances Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot do a decent job at portraying a brooding Bruce Wayne/Batman and a warrior Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Jesse Eisenberg, while portraying a different kind of Lex Luther, comes off as a poor man's Heath Ledger Joker. Amy Adams ultimately proves to be unneccesary to the film with little for her character to do amongst superheros, megalomaniac villians, meta humans, and Doomsday. Dear Zack Snyder: Lay off the Instagram Filter Please stop ruining beautifully shot visuals through a dark brown filter that makes it almost impossible to discern what the hell is happening on screen. Doomsday I thought this movie was about Batman vs Superman???? Way too early to bring out The Death of Superman storyline. Notable Movies Referenced Connect with us! News in Movies! Beetlejuice 2 Sequel Winona Ryder appeared on Seth Meyers a few months ago to comment on the sequel moving forward. Is this another example of Hollywood preying on the people's sense of nostalgia instead of crafting original films? Brian also mistakenly thinks that Jeffrey Jones (Lydia Deetz's Father in Beetlejuice) is dead. Doug Bradley (Pinhead) comments on Hellraiser: Judgement Doug Bradley, the original Pinhead from the Hellraiser movies, comments via ihorror about his absence in the newest attempt by Dimension Films to retain the franchise rights to the Hellraiser series with Director Gary Tunnicliffe's film, Hellraiser: Judgement. S1 Ep 2Scream and The Rise of Terrible Horror Movies – Movie Review – Episode 2
EIn this episode (which originally was recorded in October), Brian, John, and Elaine review Wes Craven's Scream; particularly, how the film has impacted the horror genre both negatively and positively. The current state of horror is also addressed and how the future of horror relies mainly on the efforts of independent filmmakers vs the big Hollywood studios. Key Points Scream Review At the time of it's premiere, the slasher film had been played out thanks primarily to the repeated sequels from such cinematic staples like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, and Friday the 13th. Scream can be credited with revitalizing The Slasher by injecting a self awareness of slasher film tropes as well as a wonky type of humor Scream can debated to have led to the commercialism of the horror genre where profit and style override substance. Horror films reflect the time they were made Movies like The Exorcist may have been shocking for their time but do not necessarily cause the same type of fear as seen in modern day horror. Final Points Terrible horror movies are a product of horror fans continuing to prove to studios that they are profitable. The future of horror will lie with the Independent Filmmaker, not the big budget studio Positive Points in Scream Wes Craven's ability to create tension Having the balls to kill off one of the biggest actors at the time in the first 10 mins (Drew Barrymore) Negative Points in Scream Snarky mid-90's dialog that doesn't hold up Pushed horror towards commercialism Every character apparently is a film expert Notable Movies Referenced Connect with us!
