S1 Ep 216Summer School (1987) - Movie Review - Episode 216
EThis week, we are reliving our worst nightmares......high school. We are sticking around 1987 as we take a look at one of the rare teenage comedies from the era to actually not be completely gross out and full of adult jokes. We are of course talking about the 1987 blast from the past, Summer School. A movie that gave us Mark Harmon prior to joining the force of NCIS, Kirsty Alley before Cheers and Look Who's Talking, and Dean Cameron before Ski School. A movie that just might be more famous for a comedic scene of gross out gore than it is for having a music video featuring the voice of Tommy Pickles (E.G Daily) or being directed by comedy legend, Carl Reiner. So grab your favorite 1980's red sunglasses and open your text books to page 27 as we review SUMMER SCHOOL! PATREON! We've just launched our Patreon! S1 Ep 215The Stepfather (1987)- Movie Review - Episode 215
EThis week, Brian and John celebrate Father's Day in the only way possible; by reviewing a movie about a homicidal maniac who preys on single parent families in his search for the perfect family. We are of course talking about 1987's The Stepfather. An odd ball and much under appreciated slasher film that feels more like a slasher from the early 80's rather than the late 80's when stripped-sweatered dream killers and sadomascistic demons from a puzzle box were all the rage. Yet this film rises above all that and provides us with a smart and multi-layered horror film that touches on everything from Reagan Conservatism, the American dream, and the mixed emotions that come when new people enter a family due to either divorce or when a parent dies. So grab your world's greatest dad mug and pop on those headphones as we dive into the world of The Stepfather! Check out The Anatomy of a Franchise: The Stepfather by In Praise of Shadows on Youtube. Also, Shudder we are totally for sale! PATREON! We've just launched our Patreon! S1 Ep 214Army of the Dead (2021) - Movie Review - Episode 214
EThis week, Brian and John wear out our welcome in Las Vegas as we step out of the world of Nomi Malone and The Stardust and into the world of Alpha Zombies, Beta Zombies, and Bespectacled Batistas'. Yes, we are talking about the much talked about post Justice League Netflix-nugget from Zack Snyder: Army of The Dead. A movie that has divided people nearly as much as any Zack Snyder movie would. The argument this time being centered around just how much Ella Purnell's Kate Ward screwed the pooch for the entire crew during her "I gotta get my random friend" death wish scene. Or possibly whether the movie is actually some bizzaro purgatory video game (if you've seen the film, you know what I'm talking about). Either way, grab your melee weapon and boomsticks as we take on ARMY OF THE DEAD! PATREON! We've just launched our Patreon! EThis week, Brian and John are packing our bags and hitchhiking to the city of dreams and riches....LAS VEGAS! Do you crave a movie about a down on her luck girl who rises through the ranks of Vegas' entertainment industry to become the leading Showgirl of the Stardust? Showgirls has got that too! Just don't ask for 5 star acting and a cohesive plot. And please please, don't eat while watching this movie (unless you are eating doggy chow). So grab your winning chips and buckle up for a cult film of awesomely bad proportions as we dive into the world of Showgirls. PATREON! We've just launched our Patreon! Our show will of course always be free to listen, but if your itching for something extra, you can help contribute to the show with your support! S1 Ep 212Hannibal (2001) - Movie Review - Episode 212
EThis week John and Brian invite you for dinner (wink wink cannibalism) as we gather for a feast of one of the most divisive entries in the Hannibal Lecter Cinematic Universe (Sorry Hannibal the tv show, only movies on this podcast), Hannibal from 2001. A direct sequel to the oscar winning 1991 Jonathan Demme film, Silence of the Lambs; Hannibal continues the story of everyone's favorite flesh eater, Dr. Hannibal Lecter as he jet sets around italy avoiding assassins, sneaky italian detectives, and flesh eating swine courtesy of a creepy Gary Oldman. All the while he pines for his favorite FBI Agent, Clarice Starling, notably not played by Jodie Foster. So I hope you have brought your appetite as we sink our teeth into Hannibal. PATREON! S1 Ep 207Leprechaun 2 (1994) - Movie Review - Episode 207
EHappy St. Patrick's Day to our Irish friends and fans and of course to those special fans who happen to "pretend" to be Irish every St. Paddy's Day. In honor of the holiday, we are cracking open the second entry into what arguably might be the last gasp of the slasher era. We're talking about 1994's Leprechaun 2. A movie that literally has nothing in common with the original, other than Warwick Davis carrying the entire film due to the absence of the real star of the original, Jennifer Aniston's old nose and high tops. So grab a pint of green beer and a slice of Shepherd's Pie as we break down this cringe-worthy piece of nostalgia, Leprechaun 2! EThis week, after our review last week of the turducken of terrible that was Neil Breen's "Pass Thru" , we here at The Cinema Psychos Show needed a bit of a pallet cleanser. And wouldn't you know it, we got one in the form of the Justin Armaos' new release, "Bloodsucka Jones vs. The Creeping Death." A movie that serves as not only a comedic play off of blaxsploitation cinema but also zombie movies (which has our interest already peaked as we are all based in Pittsburgh: The Zombie Capital of the World). S1 Ep 204Pass Thru - The 4th Horseman of the Breenpocalypse - Episode 204
EThis week, we are opening the 6th seal of terrible cinema and unleashing the 4th horseman of the Breenpocalypse with Neil Breen's "Pass Thru". A movie that some say isn't really a movie but more or less a collection of clips and drone footage from the raving of a sundrenched madman bent on solving the worlds problems by "cleansing" the world of bad people. So yea....It's a fun movie for the whole family....if that family is perhaps the Manson family. EThis week, we are tackling a topic that is tearing Hollywood apart. The guttaral street fight that has broken out between HBO Max and streaming services vs Movie Theaters. The battle is of course over HBO Max's decision to release their 2021 blockbuster films on streaming as well as through traditional theaters. We get in a heated debate that tackles everything from whether studios will continue streaming after the pandemic ends, whether consumers will go back to theaters, and what movie theaters SHOULD do to compete in the post pandemic world where streaming might seriously threaten their very existence. EThis week, we are saying one final good bye to the unending maelstrom of misery and depression that was 2020 with PART 2 of our Year End Retrospective. There weren't a great deal of movies that came out during 2020 as we all were trying to divert our attention away from the doom scrolling with Tiger King or trying to master chess after watching Queen's Gambit. But the few offerings we did get deserve a little love......or hate. So we'll be breaking down our picks for the best and worst examples of cinema to come out of the year that broke Hollywood. S1 Ep 200Black Christmas (1974) - Movie Review- Episode 200
EThis week, we are breaking through the episode 200 barrier in Yule tide style. We are reviewing what arguably might be the very first slasher film....no we aren't talking about John Carpenter's 1978 classic, Halloween. We're talking about the 1974 Canadian Xmas murder-fest Black Christmas. A movie that gives us party girl Margot Kidder before she became Lois Lane and one of the first roles to feature John Saxon as a police detective; a role that Saxon would literally be in for the remainder of his career (literally he was a police detective in a nightmare on elm street too) . So lock your sorority den mother's bed room door cause the calls are definitely coming from inside the house as your favorite Cinema Psychos celebrate 200 big ones and ring in the season with Black Christmas! S1 Ep 199Scrooged (1988) - Movie Review - Episode 199
EIt's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here. Even though 2020 has done a number on all of us, we here at The Cinema Psychos Show refuse to let it take away our celebration of odd ball holiday classics. And no movie is more odd ball enough than the 1988 Bill Murray classic, SCROOGED. A film that marked the return of Murray into a leading comedic role (we'll ignore that Little Shop of Horrors cameo), Scrooged retells the classic Charles Dicken's story, "A Christmas Carol" through a modern parody that touches on everything from late 1980's obsession over television, income inequality, and a nihilistic view of Christmas. And oh yea it's all wrapped up in a wacky Bill Murray SNL sketch that you either love or hate. So grab your top of the line IBC towel and sit back as we dive into the xmas classic, SCROOGED. S1 Ep 198Planes, Trains, and Automobiles - Movie Review - Episode 198
EThis week is Thanksgiving here in the US which means that it is time for us to pull out one of our Thanksgiving horror classics to review......hmmm aside from Thankskilling which we already did, there doesn't seem to be any left. Might as well turn to what everyone considers a classic Thanksgiving movie, The 1987 John Candy and Steve Martin road movie, "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles". A movie that broke John Hughes out of the box of making movies consisting of 80's yuppie teenagers and their problems, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is the type of movie that serves up plenty of laughs (even if some of them don't age that well) as well as plenty of heart. S1 Ep 197The Witches (1990) - Movie Review - Episode 197
EThis week, we are taking a look back at what might be one of the weirdest and most terrifying children's films that has probably led to the emotional scars for an entire generation of children.....no we aren't talking about Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory....we're talking about his 1990 follow up, The Witches! A movie that might just be Mr. Bean's only serious role and oh yea is 100% nightmare fuel. Dead parents...check. Horrifying witch practical makeup....double check. A plot that involves witches who murder children by turning them in mice.....triple check. Yup this movie checks all the nightmare fuel boxes yet somehow this movie is endeared by generations. S1 Ep 196The Child's Play Film Series Retrospective- Episode 196
EThis week, we are back after a little Halloween hiatus with a little retrospective just as we leave spooky season and march toward the mass consumer orgy that is Xmas with a tale of toys gone bad....well more like movies about a single toy gone bad. We are of course referring to academy award winning actor, Brad Dourif portrayal of the "all rubber" serial killer in a matching jumper, Chucky in The Child's Play Series. The series is a rollercoaster ride of camp, gore, and a bit of voodoo from the mind of Don Mancini. But how does this cavalcade of horrors from the cabbage patch doll from hell stack up when examined without nostalgia goggles? S1 Ep 193Alien 3 - Really That Awful? - Episode 193
EThis week, we are diving head first into spooky season by analyzing what arguably might be the lowest point of The Alien Franchise (not counting Resurrection, Alien Vs. Predator, Prometheus.....or Alien Covenant) and what might be the lowest point of David Fincher's career. We are of course talking about 1992's Alien 3. A movie that takes all the things you loved about Alien and Aliens and dumps it into a toilet bowl full of brown depressing poo. A movie that suffers from some of the most notorious cases of studio meddling combined with massive lack of direction that can be traced to the simple act of idea generation for a sequel. But does this film deserve the marker of being the worst in the series? Are there redeeming factors that can be gleaned after nearly 30 years since it's release? We'll attempt to answer these questions as we dissect the alien goose egg known as Alien 3. MERCH AND ANNOUCEMENTS Our co-host, John Wooliscroft, has a brand new film channel on youtube. S1 Ep 191Battlefield Earth - Movie Review - Episode 191
EThis week, Brian and John are again running the show sans Laine, sparing her the horror of reviewing what arguably might be the biggest budget B movie of all time. A movie filled with an equal amount of hollywood intrigue, financial shinnanigins, and lawsuits.....and oh yea the movie is hot hot garbage. We are of course talking about the one and only (thank god) film about gold hungry aliens: Battlefield Earth. A favorite drinking game at every film school, Battlefield Earth was billed as "the next star wars" and "the next Schindler's List" but ended up being a weird flop filled with dutch angles, terrible dialogue, bad editing, and a garbage script. So all you "man-animals" gather around as we dive into the world of Battlefield Earth. S1 Ep 184I Am Here...Now - Breenpocalypse III: Electric Boogaloo - Episode 184
EThis week, we are revisiting a dark dark corner of cinema. A world full of cinematic horrors that will make your eyes and ears bleed and your head explode like in Scanners when you attempt to analyze the plot. It's Breenpocalypse time folks! In our third entry into the analysis of B movie wunderkind, Neil Breen; we look at his space techno Jesus alien romp from 2009: I Am Here…Now. A movie that we had dubbed as his "art house film". A movie that is a bit light on the conspiracy theory riddled fever dreams that we saw in Double Down and Fateful Findings. Instead we get a fish mash of everything from Alien Techno Jesus, prostitute sisters, gang violence, and violence against homeless people in wheelchairs in Las Vegas. So strap in folks cause this one was very hard for us to watch. MERCH AND ANNOUCEMENTS Our co-host, John Wooliscroft, has a brand new film channel on youtube. S1 Ep 175Mnemophrenia Interview - Director Eirini Konstantinidou & Actor/Co-Writer Robin King - Episode 175
EThis week we have quite a treat for you all Psychos Nation! You might remember that a few months back, we reviewed the little indie sci fi drama, "Mnemophrenia." We loved the film as it forced us to examine our relationships with technology and question the ideas about the nature of reality and memory. Well, this week we have the filmmaker behind the film, Eirini Konstantinidou and lead actor/co-writer, Robin King in studio to talk about the film and explore the extremely unique filmmaking processes that went into crafting this mind bending narrative. S1 Ep 174Mars Attacks! - Really That Awful? - Movie Review - Episode 174
EThis week, with the Pentagon releasing video footage of what appears to be UFOs, we figured why not look at what the worst case scenario would be for an alien attack by examining the 1996 Tim Burton interstellar classic, Mars Attacks! Boasting a deep ensemble cast including such luminaries as Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, and a yet to be famous Jack Black, the film is often forgot about when discussing the work of Tim Burton. It isn't quite the masterpiece of Edward Scissorhands but it isn't the abomination of Alice in Wonderland or pretty much anything released by the filmmaker after 2000. So why did this film get lost in the Burtonverse and is it really that awful? MERCH AND ANNOUCEMENTS Our co-host, John Wooliscroft, has a brand new film channel on youtube. S1 Ep 172Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - Movie Review - Episode 172
EThis week, we are busting out of our shell (while social distancing of course) by jumping into our time machine and heading back to 1990 when the world had another fever on it's mind…TURTLE FEVER that is! We are breaking down the 30 year's young classic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A movie that quite honestly is the best movie about anthropomorphic teenaged turtles that we'll probably ever get. We're tackling some hard hitting questions such as what's the deal with Michelangelo's attraction to April? How would an inter species relationship like that work? Also we debate Casey Jones status as a house broken male who may or may not still eat out of April's garbage cans. EThis week folks, we woke up and found that the entire world had quite literally changed overnight. Like a bad zombie or outbreak movie, we have found that we are literally living in truly extraordinary and terrifying times amidst the global COVID-19 Pandemic. And while everyone has been affected by this pandemic and we are eternally grateful to those who are risking their lives for the rest of us (looking at you amazon worker, health care worker, grocery store clerk) we wanted to take a look at how this virus has affected the film industry in particular. Thank you to Eva Habermann, Len Kabasinski, Torren Davis, Brandon Eastman, and Travis Ayers for sharing their comments on how this virus has affected their lives. S1 Ep 169Mnemophrenia - Indie Film Review - Episode 169
EThis week, we are trying to erase the memory of Neil Breen's "Double Down" by cleansing our palette with "Mnemophrenia" a sci fi indie drama sent to us straight from the UK that features a web of stories dealing with our relationship with technology, VR, memory, mental illness, and the human experience. This film from Eirini Konstantinidou was a joy for us to view and definitely is a fantastic example of how sci fi can be used to convey complex ideas and stories. S1 Ep 168Double Down - The Return of The Breenpocalypse - Episode 168
EThis week, we are finally reopening the Pandora's box of bad movies by unleashing the second horseman of The Breenpocalypse! What better way to ring in the Breenpocalypse than to look at the very first film to expose us to the plague of laptops, cyber and bio terrorism, and unnecessary male nudity. We are of course talking about 2005's "Double Down." A movie chronicling the life and times of hacker, bio and cyber terrorist, hero, secret agent, mercenary, and GOD- Neil Breen AKA Aaron Brand who either saves or destroys Las Vegas (we aren't sure).
