Carol Groves' Memory Honored Amidst Mysterious Death

Jury in FirstEnergy Corruption Trial Faces Setback; Deliberations Continue Despite Document Mix-Up The jury in the FirstEnergy corruption trial, involving former CEO Chuck Jones and ex-senior VP Mike Dowling, hit a snag after seven days of deliberations when the judge accidentally slipped them documents they werent supposed to have. The jury is deciding if the executives bribed ex-Public Utilities Commission chair Sam Randazzo with $4.3 million for favorable rulings. Randazzo, who was indicted with them, took his own life last year after pleading not guilty. On Friday, Judge Susan Baker Ross called the jury into court to check how many saw the mix-up: a confidential transcript of an interview with a FirstEnergy board member and pages from an updated indictment that included dismissed charges like money laundering. Its unclear if they got more pages detailing the scheme, which the judge had banned from evidence. The jury nodded yes when asked if they could still reach a verdict, and lawyers on both sides said they were fine with deliberations continuing. Prosecution looked upbeat, defense stayed calm with their clients, as the jury clocked in fifty-six hours behind closed doors. However, the jury doesnt know key backstory, like FirstEnergy admitting to bribes, federal racketeering charges against Jones and Dowling, or the convictions of ex-Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and his ally for a related $61 million scheme pushing House Bill six. Judge Ross reminded them to weigh all proper evidence, direct or circumstantial, and theyre back at it without a verdict yet, keeping everyone on edge as this Ohio power play unfolds. The ACLU of Ohio and immigrant advocacy groups have filed a class action lawsuit against ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, alleging warrantless arrests without probable cause or flight risk assessments. The case involves four plaintiffs, including a Honduran asylum seeker with a work permit and a Kenyan worker turned asylum seeker, both detained for weeks before being released on bond. The lawsuit challenges ICEs enforcement practices, arguing they violate Fourth Amendment rights. DHS defends its actions, stating they follow Title Eight authority and use reasonable suspicion for stops and probable cause for arrests. The case is part of ten similar lawsuits nationwide and will test the limits of immigration enforcement without full constitutional checks.
