Ep 100Ep. 100 – Truth In A Culture Of Doubt – Is God Immoral Because Of Suffering – Part 1
Responding to one of Ehrman’s lesser-known books, “God’s Problem”. We discuss the introduction to some of the problems Ehrman raises and dig into the first objection of is there a contradiction of God being sovereign and God being good with all the evil and suffering in the world. Ehrman is not much known for him being a theologian or a philosopher so an odd subject for him to tackle. However, this is a subject which everyone comes to ask themselves about and should ask if their worldview gives a consistent argument to explain the existence (or non-existence) of evil and suffering. Ep 99Ep. 99 – Truth In A Culture Of Doubt – Introduction
Covering the introduction, we cover a bit more of Bart Ehrman and his work. Ehrman claims Christian scholarship has presuppositions going into the subject of New Testament scholarship. Ehrman, however, also has presuppositions whether he admits them or not. We also talk about the desired one should have to present alternative viewpoints in scholarship and present them in the best light to respond to them. Finally, we suggest a few additional free resources. ANNOUCEMENT! – Our 5th Book Revealed
Here’s an Amazon link to our next book – https://amzn.to/2JX62lL that we’ll be starting on November 16. One of the current, most popular names in New Testament scholarship is that of Bart Ehrman. Ehrman has made a name for himself by going from evangelical believer to skeptical agnostic. He has also written many popular-level, New York Times best-selling books speaking against the orthodox understanding of early Christianity, The Bible, and the historical Jesus. He is a figure who is taken seriously and so the Christian should do likewise. And that’s what Andreas Köstenberger, Darrell Bock, and Josh Chatraw do in this book. They walk through each of the main claims of Ehrman in his attempt to undercut the truth of the Christian message that is rooted in history. Grab the book and join us in our book club as we go through these important topics and see that historic Christianity and the New Testament are not exactly as Ehrman presents them. Ep 95Ep. 95 – Tactics – Mini Tactics
Before we get to the conclusion of Tactics by Greg Koukl, we want to cover five mini tactics at the end. We talk about applying Jesus’ own words to a conversation, how to handle name-calling, embracing true but irrelevant objections, using better descriptor words than religious words, and the power of just saying, “So?”. Timeline Breakdown: 00:00 – Intro To Chapter 18 – Mini-Tactics 01:06 – Use Jesus’ Own Standing On A Subject In Dispute 03:22 – Use What Jesus Said About Marriage & Same-Sex Marriage As A Standard In The Conversation 05:56 – How To Answer, “But Jesus Never Said Anything About Same-Sex Marriage!” 09:22 – How To Take General Principles From Other Subjects Jesus Talked About 13:12 – Ask What Their Opinion Of Jesus Is To See What The Impact Of This Tactic Would Hold 15:56 – When Being Called Names – Ask What They Mean By That? 22:58 – Christians Should Not Engage In Spiteful Name Calling 24:53 – Embrace True Known Objections That Are Accurate But Irrelevant 26:50 – Examples Of Answering Objections By Moving Towards The Objection 31:30 – Using Better Words Than Our Normal “Christian-ese” For Better Understanding 35:55 – The Power Of “So?” 37:15 – Examples Of Using The Power Of “So?” 40:20 – Conclusion The episode link is cavetothecross.com/ep95 27-10 – Great video on answering that objection “Do Atheists Just Believe In One Less God Than Theists?” by Tyler Vela From The Freed Thinker (https://www.youtube.com/user/virtuety) 37-27 – Listen To McGrew’s Great Debate Here Books mentioned in this episode: (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2CZRs9s) (Audible – https://amzn.to/2ZGspjI)             Subscribe on the following:
Ep 94Ep. 94 – Tactics – Inside Out
If (or since) the Christian message is true, there are certain outcomes that stem from that starting point. One of those is that all people have in them the Imago Dei or “Image of God” and are imbued with certain universals. It is one of the reasons presuppositionalists want to speak to that realization when talking with unbelievers. With this inside quality making its way outside in people’s thinking and action, we can use this tactic to speak to that. Timeline Breakdown: 00:00-05:30 – Intro & Overview Of Previous Chapters 05:30-06:47 – Do You Have A Book You’d Like To See On The Show? 06:47-08:14 – Use Inside Information You Have In The Discussion 08:14-13:11 – Us The Fact That We Are All Made In God’s Image To Your Advantage 13:11-17:51 – Applications In Using The Inside Information Tactic 17:51-20:43 – One Death A Tragedy; The Other Death Is Just Fine 20:43- 28:34 – It’s God’s Earth Not Mother Earth 28:34-36:37 – The Problem Of Evil & The Problem Of Justice – For Atheists 36:37-45:23 – Point Out When The Other Side Relies On Their Image Of God To Argue The episode link is cavetothecross.com/ep94 9:09 – Ep.69 – Nancy Pearcy Interview 15:29 – Braxton Hunter Vs. Ep 93Ep. 93 – Tactics – Just The Facts, Ma’am
Believe it or not, sometimes Christians know what they’re talking about. We cover the tactic to use and not to be a jerk about it. We also cover a few examples like responding to Christopher Hitchen’s “God Is Not Great”, Dan Brown’s “The DaVinci Code”, abortion is murder, & Bible translation. NOTE – At 13:47, Patrick gives the wrong book recommendation. It should be “The Heresy of Orthodoxy” by Michael J. Kruger & Andreas J. Köstenberger. Ep 92Ep. 92 – Tactics – Rhodes Scholar
A little longer episode today but one that is important. There are times when you, Average-Christian-Person have to respond to people who have “Dr.” before their names, a bunch of letters after, and are called “scholars” and “experts”. The question is, how do we respond to claims made by so-called scholars or true scholars that may speak out against Christian claims (or any claim really)? Well, here are a few ways we can. Timeline Breakdown: 00:00-02:17 – Intro 02:17-7:43 – When Citing Scholars Are We Being Informed Or Are We Being Educated? 7:43-10:56 – How To Tell If An Authority Has Been Compromised 10:56-12:30 – Why Should I Believe A Person’s Take On A Subject? 12:30-14:31 – Sometimes Experts Speak Outside Their Areas Of Expertise 14:31-15:47 – Experts Always Owe Us Explanations As To Why They Hold The Positions They Do 15:47-17:32 – Ask “Why Should I Believe This Person’s Opinion?” 17:32-22:44 – Understanding Science Experts – Science As A Methodology 22:44-26:40 – Understanding Science Experts – Science As A Philosophy 26:40:29-30 – How Science As A Methodology & A Philosophy Info Our Understanding About Origins 29:30:33:25 – How Scientists Aren’t Able To Explain The Supernatural Because They Don’t Allow It In The First Place 33:25-39:26 – How Science Fails When Talking About The Historical Jesus 39:26-42:07 – Using The Rhodes Scholar Tactic 42:07-49:45 – Not All Bias Is Equal 49:45-51:35 – Conclusion The episode link is cavetothecross.com/ep92 Books mentioned in this episode: (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2CZRs9s) (Audible – https://amzn.to/2ZGspjI)             (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/3iGLz0T) (Audible – https://amzn.to/3mFWg6u)             (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2FJDaeA) (Audible – https://amzn.to/2ROx4wt)             (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/3hCanGd) (Audible – https://amzn.to/3hHQIEJ)             Subscribe on the following:

Ep 87Ep. 90 – Tactics – Steamrollers
Because we live in a lot of interactions online, we seem to be going away from the interaction types where you speak and I listen THEN I speak and you listen. In the day of response videos, reaction to only headlines, and wanting that “mic drop moment”, we sometimes encounter people who want to steamroll the conversation. Here are some tactics on how to gracefully handle those moments. Timeline Breakdown: 00:00-01:32 – Intro 01:32-7:20 – The 3 Types Of Steamrollers 07:20-13:17 – First Response Is To Ask The Person, “Please, Stop” 13:17-17:49 – Second Response Is To Call Out The Person 17:49-26:20 – Final Response Is To Leave 26:20-27:45 – Warnings To Christians Not To Be Steamrollers Either The episode link is cavetothecross.com/ep90 Books mentioned in this episode: (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2CZRs9s) (Audible – https://amzn.to/2ZGspjI)             Subscribe on the following:
Ep 89Ep. 89 – Tactics – Taking The Roof Off
In this section, we look at evaluating the lens through which people see the world – through their worldview. Greg Koukl suggests that we, for the sake of argument, adopt their worldview and see where it might take us. Evaluating worldviews is a staple of the presuppositions model and a strong tool in a dialogue between opposing worldviews. Timeline Breakdown: 00:00-00:53 – Intro 00:53-03:02 – Exposing The Flaws When Having A Conversation 03:02-05:20 – Looking At The Worldview Map To See If You Have The Correct One 05:20-09:17 – Adopt The Other Person’s Worldview, Test It Out, And See Where It Leads 09:17-16:43 – The Christian’s Best Alley In Evaluating Worldviews – Reality 16:43- 20:17 – The Atheist Professor’s Proof Of God Turned On Its Head 20:17-24:03 – Arguing Against Mother Teresa 24:03-28:27 – A Proper Understanding Of Faith Example 28:27-31:55 – Defeating Absurd Arguments For Abortion 31:55-35:06 – Summary & Further Reading The episode link is cavetothecross.com/ep89 Books mentioned in this episode: (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2CZRs9s) (Audible – https://amzn.to/2ZGspjI)               (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2Eu0FYA)     (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/2DAkDRa)             (Amazon Link – https://amzn.to/3273AiY)           Subscribe on the following:
Ep 88Ep. 88 – Tactics – Sibling Rivalry & Infanticide
For the third part of the tactic on identifying arguments that self-destruct, we look at two different ones. We look at arguments that when held up next to each other aren’t allowed to exist at the same time and be consistent. The other is arguments who have an underlying assumption that knocks out the claim. We cover a few examples in there as well. Ep 87Ep. 87 – Tactics – Practical Self-Destruction
We looked at when arguments fail because they contradict themselves. Now we look at when arguments don’t formally contradict themselves but they still fail due to practical reasons. We have to remember, that the tactics here are to help engage in a dialogue and not used to make the other side feel like a failure. Our goal is to give the Good News, not to “win”. Ep 86Ep. 86 – Tactics – Views That Self-Destruct
The next tactic to use when talking to someone about your faith is one that we’ve seen in our previous book by Nancy Pearcey “Finding Truth”. That is looking at what someone is saying and seeing if their own statement contradicts itself. Sometimes this is called the internal critique and if it contradicts itself it can be easily dismissed. Ep 82Ep. 85 – Tactics – Turnabout – Defending Against Columbo
So now that we have all parts of the Columbo down, can it ever be used against us? Well, that’s what we want! The tactics are there to have a good, helpful conversation! However, there are times when the third part – ask leading questions – are neither leading anywhere or actually legitimate questions. How do we combat that? Would you be surprised to learn – the Columbo tactic?! Ep 84Ep. 84 – Tactics – Columbo Steps 3 – Using Questions To Make A Point & Perfecting Columbo
Completing the Columbo Tactic we see why it is such an important and versatile tactic. Now it’s time to use it. What can we do before getting into conversations and after? What style of presentation should we take? Who is our real audience? All questions to ask and learn to ask now. Ep 82Ep. 83 – Tactics – Two Reliable Rescues
Before getting to the third part of the Columbo tactic, Greg Koukl stops to inform us of two encounters we may have using the tactic. One encounter is with a surly professor who wants to decry Christianity but make you back up your side when you object. The other is the person who knows a lot more about the subject being discussed than you. Your hosts can relate to these encounters. Some more than others. The Columbo Tactic, as Greg Koukl presents it, is such an important one that we need to really break it down and understand it. This episode covers the first of three points to the tactic. To have a productive and enriched conversation asking two simple questions (for now) will really help out both sides. Ep 80Ep. 80 – Tactics – Reservations
Great! Now is the time to put on the boxing gloves and wail on some atheists by the power of God! Ya, not so much. Greg Koukl gives us a second part of the introduction where he lays out what the Christian means when we say “argument”. We don’t want to have a shouting match with someone we want to have a fruitful conversation. We also want to have a proper understanding of God’s sovereignty and His role in salvation. Before we utilize our tactics, we need to have the crucified to Christ mindset. Ep 78Ep. 78 – Lydia McGrew Interview – Part 2
We welcome Dr. Lydis McGrew to the show to talk about her two books, “Hidden in Plain View” and “The Mirror and the Mask“. For this part, we cover Dr. McGrew’s book about whether or not the Gospels are Literary Device or Historical Narrative. Literary devices are the theory that the Gospels are used by the authors to convey a message over being historically accurate. There’s a lot to be said about this subject and a lot of controversy so we should approach this with balance and reading both sides in the best light possible. What are your thoughts on the subject? Ep 77Ep. 77 – Lydia McGrew Interview – Part 1
We welcome Dr. Lydis McGrew to the show to talk about her two books, “Hidden in Plain View” and “The Mirror and the Mask“. For part one we cover Dr. McGrew’s first book about undesigned coincidences in the New Testament. Dr. McGrew and her husband, Dr. Tim McGrew are fellow Kalamazooians and we talk about her start into apologetic philosophy. She then explains how undesigned coincidences lend to the credibility of The Bible including the establishment of miracles. This really is a fascinating subject and we hope to do more videos on this subject. When the interview goes live you can find part 2, talking about Dr. McGrew’s book “The Mirror and the Mask” at the following: 06/29 – cavetothecross.com/ep78 You can find Dr. Lydia McGrew on Facebook here. Ep 76Ep. 76 – Finding Truth – How Critical Thinking Saves Faith
We wrap up Professor Pearcey’s book with a challenge to Christians and to the Church. That challenge is to stand firm on the Word of God as you say that you do, learn and use critical thinking skills that God encourages us to use, and to go into the world preaching the Good News of the Gospel. We thank Nancy Pearcey for her work and you can check out her links in our interview with her in episode 69. Ep 75Ep. 75 – Finding Truth – Free-Loading Atheists – Part 2
We finish up Principle 5 by continuing to present examples of atheists freely admitting to stealing from Christianity’s superior worldview. So much so that non-theists attempt to elbow into areas addressed previously by Christianity – including atheist churches. Along with a warning about scientism, Christians are encouraged to present the Gospel with love and respect. Onto Principle 5! We talk about how and why the Christian should present the Christian worldview as the superior and most consistent one. We then go over where the atheist(s) freely admit to stealing from the Christian worldview in order to come to the beliefs they want to rather than the outcomes their beliefs would demand. We finish up the chapter by looking at how the postmodern worldview, and it’s subsections, destroy themselves. We look at the Social Justice Movement, Critical Race Theory, and similar progressive stances actually fall apart of themselves. Finally, we look at how Christianity offers the better, consistent, and complete worldview. Principle 4 – does the worldview meet its own standard when it is applied to itself? Since non-Christian worldviews tend to be reductionistic they will be self-defeating. Strap in; we’re talking about religion and politics today! Our friend, Lauren, from the Tulips & Honey Podcast interviews Patrick on how Christians should respond to government in light of Scripture. The launchpad for this is Romans 13. From there, they discuss what does Romans 13 actually mean; what should the Christian’s response to the State and its overreach be; how should a Christian view the use of force against people and against government; and can one be a Christian and an anarchist? Ep 68Ep. 68 – Finding Truth – Secular Leaps Of Faith – Part 3
Finishing up the chapter, we look at the worldviews of postmodernists and its failure to account for what’s seen in the exterior world. When failing to live consistently with the belief that everyone is a robot and no one should really be held accountable for their actions, we see many fall back to wanting to believe Christianity is true but believing that it accounts for the facts too well. Ep 67Ep. 67 – Finding Truth – Secular Leaps Of Faith – Part 2
Here we delve deeper into the secular materialist when it comes to failing to account for the things seen in the world. We see that they tend to make leaps of faith in their outlook that they can’t back up. They then establish possible outcomes that are downright scary. To save them from immoral and asocietial stances, they adopted overriding beliefs wherein they act as if Christianity were true. The troubling and mystic beliefs of materialist show a flawed worldview that is unable to be grounded properly. Ep 66Ep. 66 – Finding Truth – Secular Leaps Of Faith – Part 1
Picking up on the third principle, we now look at how non-Christian worldviews don’t explain what is seen in the world. With an idol replacing God, secular worldviews come upon truths in human nature or universal makeup or within the confines of experience that it must dismiss as an illusion or explain it away as not real. The real quotes taken from leaders in their field are quite shocking and honest but necessarily follows from their basic outlook on the world. We finish our look at how non-Christian worldviews reduce humanity by looking at four different worldviews. Looking at pantheism, Islam, Nazism, and communism shows that other worldviews need to cut off areas of humanity that they can’t explain or that they must explain away. Ep 63Ep. 63 – Finding Truth – How Nietzsche Wins – Part 3
Who knew that a concept that doesn’t believe in absolute truth would generate so much discussion? Last week we introduced postmodernism and this week we look at how it reduces human value. We also look at post-postmodernism and how Critical Race Theory, Social Justice, and Identity Politics is the new avenue of postmodern thought and how it still devalues humanity. Ep 62Ep. 62 – To Judge Or Not To Judge (Tulips & Honey)
Patrick had the pleasure of being a guest on the Tulips And Honey Podcast with Lauren and Becca. The trio discuss the appropriate way and place to respond to false teachers and heresies. They present the biblical definition of these theological words as well as the Scriptural basis where we see the writers of the New Testament encourage confronting false teachers and encouraging those newer to the faith to turn away from bad doctrine like the Word of Faith movement. Patrick and Tony were on the podcast once before their Episode 13. Cave To The Cross Apologetics and Tulips and Honey Podcast are jointly releasing this episode at the same time. You can check out the T&H version here and also check out their other really great content. I would suggest one of my most recent episodes with an interview with an author writing about biblically responding to those with chronic pain. Ep 60Ep. 60 – Finding Truth – How Nietzsche Wins – Part 1
We introduce the concept of the second of five parts in Pearcey’s apologetic method. When people make idols they end up replacing God with a substitute. Another outcome is they reduce the proper view of man for something lesser. We should always have a proper Creator/creature distinction, but we should never devalue those made in the image of God. Ep 59Ep. 59 – Finding Truth – Twilight Of The Gods – Part 2

Ep 58Ep. 58 – Finding Truth – Twilight Of The Gods – Part 1
We begin looking at the first principle for evaluating worldviews – identify the idol the worldview tries to replace God with. Before looking at specific worldviews, we need to establish if there is any neutral ground, universality of worldviews, does every worldview count as a religion, and does every worldview have an understanding of something of the divine. Ep 55Ep. 55 – One Shot – Five Views On Apologetics & Faith Has Its Reasons
Our third One Shots where we take one episode to look at one book and give you an overview of what it’s all about. This week’s installment is “Five Views on Apologetics” by Gary Habermas, William Lane Craig, Paul D. Feinberg, Kelly James Clark, John M. Frame. This is a really interesting book in an interesting book series “Counterpoint Series”. It brings five powerhouses of apologetics in conversation over what is the best way to do apologetics. Each person presents a positive case for their preferred way and the others respond in critique and then a final response from the original presenter. It is amazing these authors brought together on this subject. We also present a little bit on a larger book in a similar subject and style from two authors categorizing apologetic methods and their development – “Faith Has Its Reasons” by Kenneth Boa and Robert M. Quick Questions with Patrick From Cave To The Cross Apologetics – Books – Hebrews – Evangelism – Video Games – & More
Just a fun response video to our friends at the Tulips & Honey podcast. Patrick got called out to give some answers to questions he posed to the ladies. This doesn’t need to be counted as a regular episode and we’ll continue the normal Monday morning posts. But here, Patrick gives responses to questions like: 1) Do you look for a book on a subject to read or do you come across a book and think it looks good and that’s what you end up studying? 2) Do you stop reading if the book isn’t “good”? How long do you give it? 3) what fiction or non-theology books do you enjoy? 4) I’m one episode behind so maybe you answer this, has your outlook on communion changed since coming from your background to saving faith? Ep 54Ep. 54 – One Shot – Defending Inerrancy
Our second of three One Shots where we take one episode to look at one book and give you an overview of what it’s all about. This week’s installment is “Defending Inerrancy” by Norman Geisler and William Roach. Their assertion is that belief in biblical inerrancy is one of the major factors of a seminary falling into liberalism. In this book, the authors present the Chicago Statement on biblical inerrancy. From there they respond to critical responses to it and positive cases for the doctrine. Ep 53Ep. 53 – One Shot – The Heresy of Orthodoxy
To kick off the new year, we are doing the first of three segments of what we’re going to be calling “One Shots“. Where we take one episode to look at one book and give you an overview of what it’s all about. For the first installment, we introduce to you “The Heresy Of Orthodoxy” by Michael J. Kruger & Andreas J. Köstenberger. If you’ve ever read or heard anyone reference Bart Ehrman and his take on where the New Testament came from you’ve interacted with the Walter Bauer theory that Ehrman adapts. The book attempts to refute the idea that at first there was what we now consider “heresy” and it only became “orthodoxy” after the might made it right.
