Yearly Themes 2021 Edition

E

THE 2020 HOLIDAYS What does A Very Special Carey Christmas look like? What does The Gormley Family Christmas Celebration entail? You'll find out in the opening 10 minutes. Then we dive into our very different New Years' Eve activities for another 20 minutes. We are very wordy, but it all flows into our annual YEARLY THEMES SHOOOOOOOOW! YEARLY THEMES FOR 2020 REVIEWED Luke evaluates Gomer's 2020 theme of Habit and Gomer evaluates Luke's 2020 theme of Committment. Then they both do some self-examination and get a bit more critical of themselves. AKA, This is where Gomer sucks. We also realize how ADHD impacts us and how to adjust accordingly. For instance, Luke prays the Rosary when he gets to a certain part of the highway and Gomer lays out his stuff YEARLY THEMES FOR 2021 The Year of Humility. Gomer realized through abandoning social media that he has been justifying his own self-righteousness and gossipping about others if he perceives an injustice by that person to him. Alasdaire MacIntyre talks about the virtues of Justice, Humility, and Patience are all required to acquire a new craft. Justice means giving to experts and mentors their due. Humility (and humiliations) means repeated failures in public in order to get the flywheel spinning on learning a new talent. Patience means being patient with myself as a stumble forward. This applies to Gomer's workouts and scheduling appointments with doctors and dentists. He is getting anxiety just typing this! The Year of Falling In Love with the Process. Luke realized with the Graduate School and the baby, he's going to be drinking from a firehose. This means limiting intentionally all of the other distractions that hit him. Setting minimums allow him to reduce the friction around good actions and habits, but with being open to going longer on the good stuff, like praying for 15 minutes. He should pray for 30, but sometimes that creates a daunting effect on his ADHD mind, so he will only commit to 15 and if it goes longer, great! The goal is to fall in love with the process. TOP FIVES OF 2020 Luke's Top Fives: Watched the movie Silence, building the Catching Foxes Team, discovering Chess this year, the run that Catholic Stuff You Should Know is currently on, and Everyly being born and all of the things that went into that! Gomer's Top Fives: The Carnivore diet, my new leadership position in the parish, writing a chapter in a book that will come out in a couple of months, My New York City trip with Shannon, and Cecilia's First Confession and Holy Communion.

ADHD and Catholicism as a Spectator Sport

E

This has many twists and turns, but it starts with Gomer paying his 2018 taxes, then goes into music, Taylor Swift, and then Gomer tries to tell a funny story that leads to Luke revealing something very personal, which carries the show. Build for yourself scaffolding that leads to life and thriving. We need to get the help that leads to the healing God wants for our lives BECAUSE GRACE BUILDS UPON NATURE IT DOES NOT REPLACE NATURE!

A Canticle for Leibowitz, with apologies to Matt Fradd

E

Luke and I discuss the astounding book, A Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter Miller Jr. Written in the 1950's at the height of the Cold War, Miller saw the specter of nuclear annihilation before him and penned this, one of the most insightful post-apocalyptic books ever written. We explore the themes as well as the original Dark Ages, and the drama of faith and reason. Then Luke ends with a VERY SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

Latvia is better than McCarrick

E

We start the show celebrating the Latvian people because THEY LOVE CATCHING FOXES AND CATCHING FOXES LOVES LATVIA. Then, McCarrick.... We don't analyze the report, but instead, we answer your questions about it. This isn't a series of hot takes, but a call to holiness.

The Not So Great Gatsby

E

I loved the story, but we look deeper into the emptiness. Not all that glitters is gold, my friends. Then we reminisce about the time Luke almost moved in with my family, followed by praising Matt Fradd (backheadedly). Then we talk people-watching, party-going, Gomer's comic book obsession as a coping mechanism for his profound loneliness in middle school, and the quote about the "magical" parts of the Bible from Matthew McConaughey.

Morality as Ideology

E

This episode is not about the election, but it is absolutely about the election. Luke asks Gomer about what happens when our Christian Morality is wrenched free of Christ and hardens into an ideology used for smashing our enemies. Gomer, agreeing with the premise, fears this pathway leads to the Antinomian dark side. Antinomianism means anti-law as in the commandment-based morality, rules of right and wrong, good and bad. The opposite of antinomianism is legalism, which views the whole of morality as fully articulated through commands. These are often Protestant terms. In Catholic circles, especially in the moral enquiry of the 15-17 centuries, the dichotomy would be between rigorism and laxism, since the Natural Law tradition and the 10 Commandments are such a central portion of our Catholic moral theology. Rigorism and Laxism are, generally speaking, ways of viewing our moral responsibilities in the face of supposed conflicts between human freedom and divine command and which occupies your default position. Laxism means you default to human freedom, because that is how we image God. Rigorism means you default to the Law, because that is how God is sovereign over us creatures. When these are in conflict, neither side seems a good option, which is why St. Alphonus Liguori is the patron saint of Moral Theologians, because his way of navigating these conflicts was through Aequiprobabilism. Confusing? Go check out the Catholic Encyclopedia article on this and you'll leave less sure of anything in your moral life.

Gomer Yells at Priests, with Clerically Speaking

E

Humble and obedient priests, Fr. Harrison and Fr. Anthony, from the podcast join us this week so Gomer can yell at them. Not them, per se, but all God's priests as a collective. They take it like warrior-poets and then distill their own struggles finding God in the midst of the Church in crisis. Also, I've added a new sound - a cow mooing - to the already popular sound of a kitty kat meowing. You'll get it when you hear it.

The Real Jurassic World Rules

E

What happens when Gomer takes a clip from Jurassic World and uses it to interpret MTV's "The Real World" from the 1990's? Not hilarity, according to my wife. Also, WHY AM I NO LONGER CONSIDERED A FAITHFUL CATHOLIC?!

International Pedestrian Competition

E

We hit up our Patreon fans (Facebook folks, coming soon!) for questions and BOY O BOY did we get a lot! We're talking questions about putting Pronouns in your email signature, is "authenticity" overplayed, have you ever had conflicts with female friends, how do you and Luke resolve conflict, how much better is Gomer and Luke, and more! We hit about 10-ish questions, even one about Luke's favorite Dayton pizza place, and each one is less than 10 minutes in our answers. BUT DON'T WORRY, Gomer still manage to sneak in a reference to Greek Mythology. Also, the "Lightning Round" is literally no different from the regular question/answer format, except I put a lightning strike before each question.

Everything is Going to Be Alright

E

Luke opens with a song. A terrible, terrible song. Gomer goes through the September Challenge with interesting comments on food and diets from various folks. Then Taylor Marshall (meow) comes up on the show, along with Fr. James Martin. Here's the deal. After we did this show I was cleaning the playroom in my house while my wife and kids were at the YMCA. While doing mindless labor, I listened to Catholic Stuff You Should Know, "Drinks after Lord's Day", and realized that we kind of talk about the same thing- but one's from a priest perspective and the other is from our sad minds. I think you should listen to it after our show.

Last Week's Episode...Today

E

Sorry for the delay. Life is a never ending gauntlet of suffering, loss and bitter partings. Anywho, Gomer was unable to record. Luke put out a few random requests for pitch-hitters on Twitter and Instagram, AND SO MANY OF YOU RESPONDED! This was such a fun epsiode to record. I think you'll enjoy it. There are three interviews on this epsiode. First, Luke chats with Lucas Hennesey, a friend from colllege and normal life, about being a 'Traddie,' the Latin Mass, and being a person of faith in a world quite often hostile to it. Then Luke chats with Bernadette Dalgetty from An Eldless Pursuit, a husband and wife wedding photogtpahy team. They chat about the creative process, starting a business and other stuff. Very cool chat. And then. It finally happens. Sarah Rose Bort and Sarah Rogers make their much anticipated debut. We chat about our experience leading ministdry together, the importance of mentorhsip, what happens when a leader with a "strong personality" leaves (I'll let you guess who that leader was), and other stuff that I cant remember. Three unique conversations that I very much enjoyed. I think you will as well. The September Challenge Continutes! [So much fun stuff happening on our Pateron right now. The September Challenge and Cognition

E

I didn't have power at all yesterday due to Hurricane Laura. In fact, at around the 1-hour mark of this episode you will hear as the power went out in the middle of the show! Luke and I continued and wrapped up by him chatting with me over my phone while we both recorded our own ends on our own laptops. That's the glory of not relying on Skype to provide the actual recording, just the interaction. OK, enough of that. We are going to launch a September Challenge for Patrons here. The goal is mental and physical health as COVID gets really, really old. More information to follow. All Patrons can join in at any Tier (thinking of you, Rebecca!). After introducing "Sexodus30", we then talk about Luke's Dave Chappell Show experience in the fields outside Dayton with his lightweight wife and how "tired" they were the next morning. "Tired" is Steubie speak for "politely hungover". Finally, we end the show with a conversation on the importance of human agency in the context of cognition. Gomer, you see, loves Audiobooks and is an auricular learner, but so much of his investment and instruction with his kids revolves around reading and writing. Luke loves this and reveals that he is on a project recently of handwriting every down at work, including emails, before he sends them, creating a much more thoughtful experience. Then my power goes out and we wrap up the show.

Gomer Finishes Harry Potter

E

Five things came together to help me understand the plot of the Harry Potter series: Rebecca told me JK Rawlings was super smart and studied a lot about Medieval history. The playfulness of her Latin and her familiarity with it The quote from a few weeks ago about how our brains have so little in common with Medieval ways. of thinking, due in large part to the printing press My best friend persuading me not to read Harry Potter by sending me a photo of her tattoo Jordan Peterson's book on Jungian psychology, "Maps of Meaning". 1 COR 15 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death... But some one will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” You foolish man! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies... There are celestial bodies and there are terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory... Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual which is first but the physical, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. I tell you this, brethren: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. ROMANS 8 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in travail together until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. GOMER'S THOUGHTS Telos of a thoroughly moral universe where even matter was moral. Aristotle taught that the nature of a thing had an end, even inert matter, and matter's end was to become gold. All of nature, subject to futility in the eyes of Scripture, would eventually become the highest and most divine substance, which is gold. The Medieval Alchemist saw the Christian task to hurry this process of turning the perishable into the imperishable. Transmutation is the process: the alchemist's craft supplies skill in place of time, which is too slow. Aristotelian universe of Alchemy supplanted by Platonic rejection of telos and rise of Natural Sciences through the ultimate technology of Scientific Method. Even the paintings are serving ends and are moral agents, as everything has a moral signification. Thus, portkeys that muggles can't notice. Thus, the horcruxes that drive the plot of the last book. The union of opposites- Harry and Voldemort, first book and the last book. This Stone was to give immortality and the Deathly Hallows are three objects meant to avoid death, two to defeat death and one to hide from death. Harry embraces death and thus had attained life. Voldemort ran from death, though he surrounded himself with it- murder to make horcruxes, Death Eaters, violence, etc. There is no technology in wizarding world. They do not get Muggle technology because they are Alchemists living in a pre-scientific world. This is the world of the Alchemist, not the chemist. They have candles, not electricity, which Muggles invented. They don’t get cars and radios and whatnot. Arthur Weasley is fascinated by Muggle technology but even he doesn’t really understand it, and his whole job in the Ministry of Magic is about the illegal use of muggle artifacts! Christ is the philosopher’s stone in medieval alchemy, redemption of matter, and even the body. This Christianization of the philosopher's stone develops it into both gold transmutation and also Elixir of Life, which preserves the physical body of the drinker. This is why there are two or three biblical citations in the last book. For instance, “And the last enemy to be defeated is death.” Which is found in a church cemetery on

Amusing Ourselves to Death

E

Luke and I discuss the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, How to Watch TV News, and The Shallows by Nicolaus Carr, and how they build the case against TV and the Internet in terms of conveying information density. Gomer is convinced of the argument because "The Medium is the Message." But, in a fascinating twist, we apply that to the "digital first" online church and what potential pitfalls that can have on a cognitive basis, as well as to the vitality of Christian faith. Luke applies it to British self-hating Soccer fans and to the difference between pop art that passes and the Classics that remain.

Bishop Barron floated an idea out there: social media is the getting ugly and supposed Catholic Theological Experts are causing a lot the problem, so maybe the hierarchy should do something. But then I'm sitting here asking, "Who will enforce it? The USCCB? Seriously?" Then we talk about how, outside of sporting events, there is no real public life, thus Virtual Reality is going to kill us all.

New Year Themes and New York!

Luke dares to ask the question: "During pregnancy, why don't people ask how much the dad is suffering, HUH?!" Gomer dares to enter the Big Apple for Sexy Paycation 2020. Then we discuss what our 2019 Themes were and our 2020 Themes, ending with a Top Five for 2019! Luke is drinking a Ten Fidy, Barrel-aged, very good | Gomer is drinking Vista Bay FOLLOW UP The Mandalorian ended strongly and on a good note. Erin is not about Disney+ and Luke canceled it without finishing the show. Pregnancy is powerful, which leads us to… Women, you have it hard, but don’t we dads have it hard, too? Erin is exhausted and now Luke has to do all of the cleaning, podcasting, cooking, and Disney+ watching. “I am so tired. How am I so tired?” New York was a sexy, sexy trip! Babymoon in San Antonio! Spending money on the last trip before the first baby. THEMES 2020 _Themes are not New Years’ Resolutions. _ Resolutions are stupid because you inevitably over promise but under deliver. Themes are guiding stars or background processes that color all that you do and just hang out, reminding you of something that you need guidance on, not something that you should feel guilty about. Gomer: Habits Gomer wants habits that are good, strong, and healthy, so his is by defining failure as whatever new habit he’s committed to, he has to do it every day or every other day, but never miss two days in a row. It builds habits while leaving room for travel, illness, life, etc. Luke: Commitment Commitment to his job means not letting things slip. TOP FIVES FROM 2019 Luke: 5- Buying a House, 4- The Ringer Podcast Network and rekindling Luke’s love for the podcast medium and our podcast together, 3- Uncut Gem, Joker, Avengers: Endgame, 2- Alaska Trip, 1- Carey Babies! Gomer: 5- GoFundMe for Small Groups, 4- St Louis Trip with Family and Luke, 3- Steubenville East with Sr. Miriam, 2- Alaska Trip, Joe Rutz’s car, Theresa’s house, etc., 1- SEEK 2019
