Episode 27: 27 Bonus Episode! 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Review!

E

We did it! A few weeks later than anticipated! Here's our review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Not going to lie, I'm pretty proud of this episode. Luke and Scott sat down and had a pretty nuanced conversation about The Force Awakens. Enjoy!

Episode 26: 26 Star Wars Pre-Game Show

E

In this episode you will discover just how crazy much we are in love with the Star Wars franchise. Yes, at one point Gomer connects some themes to theology or morality, but we let Star Wars be Star Wars, for the most part. ( I don't quote this article, but wish I had! Fun read for Thomists.)This is where we go off with Ring Theory and Darth Jar Jar Binks. If you haven't heard about this, it might break your brain or roll your eyes. For Gomer, he rolls his eyes. For Luke, his brain hath broke.Gomer reveals how many books he's read to prepare his heart. Luke reveals how much he's cried in anticipation of the movie. Then we mock George Lucas for a bit and Luke makes such an inappropriate comment, even for our show, that I had to edit it out. But, most importantly, CLICK THE PICTURE BELOW AND RESCUE YOUR CHILDHOOD FROM GEORGE LUCAS! (or watch this documentary on Netflix)And finally, what if you hate the prequels? What if a film student decided to rewrite history and suggest to George Lucas' finished script certain alterations that would make the prequels actually good movies with actual characters you care about and an actual plot surprise, rather than boring characters, stupid CGI set pieces, and the prequels simply explaining everything in the original triology. Here's a pitch for a new plot to Episode I, II, and III. <img class="thumb-image" alt="When George Lucas ruined your childhood because of his own peccadillos, Harmy's restoration of the Original Triology in this Despecialized Edition will warm your heart. Episode 25: 25 Andy Talks Social Media Evangelism

E

Ah yes. Our old pal from college, Andy Lesnefsky. Luke and I remember the living embodiment of a prank phone call. Andy is all grown up now and helped evangelize tens of thousands of people through his #ShareJesus campaign at RedeemedOnline.com last Lent, and is going even bigger for this Advent. But even more important that #ShareJesus is the way Andy is dedicated to his original work as a high school youth minister. He ditched ladder-climbing years ago and has remained at the same parish for the last 10 years, building relationships and changing lives. We talk about his founding RedeemedOnline.com because of the total lack of a Social Media strategy by Catholic ministries to engage the billions of people online. His videos last year got 1.5 million views and he's learned a lot from this campaign, which he freely shares on this episode. This one is a keeper. And a sharer. #ShareAndyTheme music brought to you by BenSound.com.

Episode 23: Beauty from Ashes with Maria Walther

We all go through difficult times, but a miscarriage or the death of a young child is a uniquely horrific pain. Maria Walther shares with us about the pain and the joy, the loss and the hope that sustains us when a mommy miscarries. While many people shrink away when someone is suffering, Maria reaches out with love and care. She discusses how Facebook has become for her Grand Central Station for prayer and intercession, receiving requests and calling on her friends to pray. I cannot think of another person who exercises the "spirituality of accompaniment" more than Maria. Luke shares a little bit about how the loss of his father drew him to God and Gomer talks about where his boy Noah got his name, and how that name made something beautiful happen. You will enjoy this episode. You will not cry. At all. I promise.Music provided by www.BenSound.com.

Episode 22: 22 The Church Needs More Andrews

E

Luke and Gomer discuss how hard it is to evangelize your own families and how easy it is to become an overzealous, preachy, arrogant jerk to your family instead. Luke recounts some personal experiences on how, back in college, his home visits were filled with arguments with his family. That is, until his mom told him he was being arrogant. What leads us to place of arrogance? How can we avoid it? How do we stop using the truths of the faith as baseball bats against others?Luke let's us in on the secret around minute 30 and Gomer gives you the best tip possible on how to evangelize one's parents, especially if you are young. Here's something things to help you out (Amazon.com affiliate links help us out!)How to Share Your Faith with Anyone by Terry BarberSomething Other Than God: How I Passionately Sought Happiness and Accidentally Found It by Jennifer FulwilerNot God's Type: An Atheist Academic Lays Down Her Arms by Holly OrdwayLife Teen Blog: That Awkward Silence by Mark HartFind us here!https://www.facebook.com/catchingfoxespodcasthttps://twitter.com/thelukethehttps://twitter.com/layevangelisthttps://twitter.com/cfoxespodcastSupport our Sponsor, CatholicMatch.com!

Episode 20: 20 Because It's Lent and I'm Fat

E

In our most theological podcast to date, Luke asks a question from Alicia to Gomer, then Gomer talks FOR. EV. ER.From the Catching Foxes Podcast Facebook PageHere's a topic that I am wondering if you guys could touch on. Sacrifice. Not in the Lenten way but in the old world way. Why was sacrifice important? What was it? Why the sacrifice of the Mass and why we have the liturgy of the Eucharist that we have? Why did Christ offered himself as a sacrifice and how can we tap into that notion today as 21st-century people? This is huge. First, we actually talk about Lenten sacrifices for about 10 minutes and Luke does a killer impression of a Catholic consumer of Starbucks during Lent. Then we open up the slaughterhouse and talk about killing animals to escape sin. Oh yeah. We go there. You'll hear words like "substitution," "orgies," "appeasement," and "theLukethe." Also we talk about the most annoying and amazing story in Scripture: the almost-sacrifice of Isaac by his father Abraham, and when you hear it this way, you'll appreciate it a whole lot more. And, consequently, you'll appreciate the Mass a whole lot more as well. Thanks to BenSounds.com for the theme music.

Then Luke reminds me that also was the "Guy on the Couch" in my apartment for a while. This forces me to take stock of my life, especially the quality of my friends and their poor life choices. <img class="thumb-image" alt="The Servants of Christ Jesus! Half the Order is related to me or my parish in one way or another!
We reminisce about his Middle School youth ministry days and the ancient art of Lectio Divina. We also talk about how he was my Jedi Master in the Holy Spirit, teaching me to pray "in the Spirit" at 2:00 AM in my dirty kitchen. My favorite part was how he discovered his call to leave everything behind and enter the Servants of Christ Jesus religious order. Luke's would probably be Br Peter's experience of homelessness in Barcelona as his poverty pilgrimage seemingly tanked. <img class="thumb-image" alt="Day Five, praying the rosary with thousands of pilgrims, he finds his close friends standing right in front of him. Episode 15: 15 Perched Like a Bird

E

This episode is hilarious, challenging, inspirational and terrifying, and that's just the first five minutes! Listen to special guest, David VanVickle, as he tells us about three hugely important things in his life: his job as the Director of Evangelization at a Catholic parish in Pittsburgh, his life in the Charismatic Renewal, and his role in Deliverance ministry and Exorcisms. When you finish this episode you will want to get some holy water, call your favorite Tamborine-playing charismatic over for some prayer, and check to make sure those really are squirrels in your attic. Also, listen to the Ghostbusters' theme song, too.I'm serious when I say that this episode challenged me. It will challenge you, too.

Episode 14: 14 PICTURES NEED TAKEN

E

This is the most anticipated podcast episode of the century: LUKE IS GETTING MARRIED AND ALL THE BROS SHOWED UP AND LEFT THEIR WIVES AT HOME.Hilarity and inside jokes ensue. This will probably alienate you as a listener if you didn't know us back at Franciscan University of Steubenville, but we hope the addition of Lord of the Rings' style narration helps you follow along the epic tale. It's the fellowship of the wedding ring. Or something.

Episode 13: 13 Please Be Real

E

How do believers think about uncertainty? How do you struggle with doubt? Gomer and Luke explore their own atheistic tendencies, using the epic book, Introduction to Christianity by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (a.k.a., Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI), to help guide us.Believers and Unbelievers alike are unable to shake their uncertainty because we are all finite, limited creatures. So how is a Christian to live with this uncertainty? No freakin' clue, but we're trying.Rescue Dawn trailer, starring Christian BaleIn the music world, Gomer is still listening to Propaganda and Luke says "Avant Garde Jazz" like 7 or 8 times. Thanks to BenSounds.com for the theme music!

Episode 12: 12 Everything is wrong! Everything is Awful!

E

Gomer and Luke Skype again to talk about meaningful things, like the longevity of comedians and the diversity of writers for The Golden Girls. Then Josh Dugger, Ashley Madison and the guilty plea of Jared from Subway for child porn possession. Sigh. Then we talk about grief and loss, especially as Luke tells us of his dad's death in 2008. This is a touching tale that weaves the love and support of family, Christological suffering, the breakup of a genuine relationship and the spiritual advice to "get up off the mat and walk."
Kanye's first sight of Caitlyn Jenner...
Special thanks to www.BenSounds.com for the theme music

Episode 11: 11 An Open Letter

E

Our relationship is complicated. When our guest was in college with Luke and I, we never really talked or hung out. In fact, we all thought his sister was a lot cooler than him. But that was only because we never met him. However, after this podcast, we still like his sister more. He's a Canon Lawyer and really, really knows his Simpsons' references. He won the spouse lottery and also has two adorable kids that they have adopted. In this episode we cover annulments and marriage issues, culture and its relationship to Christianity, gay parenting and marriage, the Simpsons, and much, much more. Episode 10: The Prodigal Affleck Returns

E

We return to that topic that we most hate about ourselves: pornography. After seeing the massive response our dear listeners gave us for episode 8, we thought that some follow up was necessary. I wanted to add a little bit of grace and conversion to the conversation that I felt like was lacking in the previous episode. We also talk about the power parable of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. We reference "The Prodigal Son" by Henri Nouwen, and then do some more Bane impressions. Thanks to www.BenSounds.com for the theme music. Thanks to MeWithoutYou for the 8 second clip of Torches Together. You should really listen to them.

Episode 9: Ten Minute Topic Showdown

E

SHOW NOTES Oh Man! This episode is intense! We had a whole group of topics that we wanted to talk about but haven't gotten around to them and so we came up with a new game plan. We spend 10 minutes on a topic and switch between pop culture and churchy stuff, taking turns on who picks what topic to discuss. We cover things like:why EWTN only makes shows for old people that eat Werther's Originals, institutional racism and the shooting of Sam DuBose, YDisciple founder Jim Beckman, superhero of Catholic youth ministryweddings, wedding fights, and marriage,Luke's slight stutter and my "slight" weight gain,a spoiler review of the movie Ant-Man and its almost anti-Paul-Ruddism,Which immediately became about the Marvel Comic Universe, specially Avengers 2and the upcoming DC movies- Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Parish life and reaching the people on the margins of faithThen back to talk about The Joker and Suicide Squad.Music by BenSounds.com

Episode 8: Authentically Honest about Pornography

E

SHOW NOTES This episode is a heartbreaker. We share as honestly as possible what went wrong in our lives when it came to human sexuality: A.K.A. Pornography. Porn is in our face and easily reachable by our broadband, HD technicolor Internet connections. We talk about this subject in a very humble and even humiliating way, trying not to dodge the issue. Also, this conversation gives Luke yet another reason to use the word "Authentic". Pretty soon he's going to go full hipster and just call it "Artisanal." We end it on a light-hearted note as I yell at Luke for not making me his Best Man and he yells at me for not making him a godfather to one of my four kids. Thanks again to BenSounds.com for the theme music!

Episode 7: Interview with Arleen the Virgin

E

Our first interview show ever! With a real guest and not Luke pretending to be a Marvel character!Ahem.Tonight we interview Arleen Spenceley, journalist and author of the recently published book, "Chastity is for Lovers" from Ave Maria Press. She has to deal with a lot in this episode from us, so you should buy her book as our way of saying "Sorry."Special Guest: Arleen Spenceley.

Episode 6: Perpetual What Now?

E

SHOW NOTES Gomer and Luke discuss fun things like the crushing reality of perpetual adolescence for both Gen-Xers and Millennials, and then, without a single hint of irony, complain that Beyonce should not be an Avenger. We are the exceptions that prove the rule, folks. Just keep in mind when you listen to this podcast, it was recorded at 5:22 AM my time, 6:22 for Luke last-name-redacted. We thought we could do this. We thought we could handle waking up early. We thought we were bulletproof. We were wrong. Dead. Wrong.

Episode 5: Big Events for the Kidz

E

Gomer and He-Who-Shall-No-Be-Last-Named talk about BIG EVENTS and its relationship to youth ministry. We get serious for a bit and dig deep on high school ministry, evangelism and catechesis. Also, we repeatedly try out our Bane impressions from The Dark Knight Rises, which degrades quickly into a bad Sean Connery. Oh yeah. And at one point Luke actually called Rocky Road ice cream "pop ice cream". Gosh, I hate that guy. Music by BENSOUND.com

Episode 4: Luke Authentically, Genuinely Loves Star Wars Trailers

E

Hey kids! Have you ever heard a grown man emote over a movie trailer that it makes you kind of uncomfortable? Well, you're gonna! Here's Luke attempting to explain the rawness of his emotions the day the second Star Wars, The Force Awakens trailer was released. It's crazy.

Episode 3: I Watch Mad Men for the Suits

E

SHOW NOTES In this episode we talk movies and TV shows that edge on the "too" side of the Catholic moral equation: too much violence and too much sex. We discuss why some bad movies are actually good and some good movies are bad. Case in point, those terrible family-friendly Christian movies. Sure, they are good in moral content, but they are bad in artistic value, which may mean it's just plain bad and should be avoided. How do you navigate the world of contemporary media, with shows like Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad are so well done, but have huge immoral elements in it? Hear Gomer rationalize his illegal downloading past and listen to Luke sing the Blockbuster Video jingle from yesteryear. Special thanks to BENSOUNDS.com for the music.

Episode 2: My Poofy Hair

E

SHOW NOTES Luke talks about why he didn't have girlfriends in middle school. Gomer challenges him on that, but ultimately agrees. Then we dive into something rather important. In San Francisco the Archbishop tries to get teachers listed as "ministers" and to get them to sign a statement of belief that clearly defines hot button issues (cough gay marriage cough) and requires one's full assent as a teacher to these views. We discuss the merits of such a signed statement, especially in the context of a lack of evangelism and solid catechesis. The Official Page of the BackStreet Boys Archdiocese releases statement on church teachings, practice in high schoolsArchbishop’s letter to Catholic high school teachersOpening Music brought to you by BENSOUND.COM.

Episode 1: Create, Don't Just Consume

E

This is the kick-off episode of my new podcast show, "Catching Foxes" with my pal Luke. We will talk about culture and it's impact on young adults living their faith. In this first episode, we basically introduce the show, each other, and do our first rant. At one point I slipped away to the bathroom, in which Luke decided to ask me a question. Whoops!
