Medical Specialties - Medical Microbiology (12 Apr 2023)
Dr Marilena Giannoudi discusses training and a career in Medical Microbiology with Dr Christopher Rooney, a Specialist Registrar in Medical Microbiology in Leeds undertaking a PhD in the gut microbiome as out of programme research. Medical Microbiology bridges the laboratory and clinical teams and provides a varied career, including oversight of laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship. At the time of recording, Dr Christopher Rooney was a specialist registrar in medical microbiology (ST4) at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, having previously held an ACF in medical microbiology. Dr Rooney is on OOPR completing a PhD in the gut microbiome. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Rooney was a clinical fellow with the infection prevention and control team at NHS E&I. Medical Specialties - Rehabilitation Medicine (29 Mar 2023)
Dr Marilena Giannoudi discusses a career in Rehabilitation Medicine with Dr Oliver Isaac, a Registrar in Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr Oliver Isaac has a passion for Rehabilitation Medicine as it combines working out the best holistic management for individual patients in optimising function and helps society as a whole. Rehabilitation Medicine physicians work closely with other professionals to achieve this. Having been unsure of which career in medicine would be most suitable, Dr Oliver Isaac has an interest in helping other junior doctors to decide this. Dr Isaac also has an interest in improving health systems and public health, both of which have implications for the patient groups he is more involved with. Importance of sleep - Shift work, fatigue and burnout (15 Mar 2023)
Dr Hannah Preston talks with Dr Michael Farquhar about the relationship between shift work, fatigue and burnout and the importance of sleep for healthcare professionals. Dr Mike Farquhar joined the Evelina London Children’s Hospital sleep medicine team as a consultant in 2012. He holds weekly general sleep, hypersomnia and adolescent sleep clinics, and supports Evelina London’s busy diagnostic sleep study service. He also works with colleagues across Evelina London to support sleep in children and young people with complex medical difficulties. Dr Marilena Giannoudi talks to Drs Rob Ker and Jonny Guckian about their experience of undertaking teaching fellow jobs and how teaching fellow jobs fit into and benefit a career as a physician. Dr Rob Ker is currently working as a registrar in renal medicine in Glasgow. He trained at Newcastle Medical School and graduated in 2014. He worked as teaching fellow in and around Newcastle in 2016 to 2018, and completed his Master's in Medical Education in 2019. He is currently the Vice-Chair for Representation in the RCPE Trainees and Members' Committee (T&MC). Dr Jonny Guckian is a dermatology registrar in Leeds. The RCP Chief Registrar Programme is a flagship leadership development programme for trainee doctors who are committed to quality improvement. The programme is open to all physician and non-physician specialties. Dr Jess Morgan is an ST5 in Elderly Medicine/GIM and Bradford Teaching Hospital's first chief registrar. Dr Morgan trained in the North East of England, via New Zealand before landing in Yorkshire, and outside of work is keen on tandem biking. International Medical Graduates in the UK (1 Feb 2023)
Drs Anda Bularga and Jonny Bardgett talk to Drs Francesca Moroni and Zerihun Demissie Tefera about their experiences as International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in the UK. Dr Francesca Moroni is a consultant gastroenterologist with special interest in nutrition and functional GI disorders. She graduated in 2006 at Universita' di Pavia in Italy and moved to the UK in 2007 where she completed her postgraduate training. She spent three years out of programme in research at the University of Edinburgh and she is about to submit her MD thesis. She is BAPEN Scotland chair, BSG SWiG committee member, BSG former deputy web editor and current SSG Digest This! webinar chief Editor. Dr Zerihun Demissie Tefera studied Medicine in Ethiopia and an MSc. in International Health at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Dr Tefera has worked in clinical and public health roles in Ethiopia and various countries in Africa. Since 2012, he has been working in NHS Lothian. He is a Speciality Doctor in Medicine of the Elderly (MoE) working with the Ortho-Geriatric Team in the orthopaedics wards at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
