S5 Ep 143The 60% Standard: Redefining Expectations for Career Success, Growth, and Fulfillment E143

“We need to talk about this major misunderstanding that the standard for human performance is the same as functional performance. It is not.” - Nicole Trick SteinbachThis week I address the misconception that many high-achieving individuals hold themselves to a standard of perfection based on a major misunderstanding of career growth: that functional standards are the same as human and growth standards. This episode is particularly for high-achieving women who work in fields, like coding, engineering, compliance, data privacy, governance, and more, that require near 100% functional standards. Far too many of you have replicated that standard to your growth, which holds back your skills and career growth. That standard is 60%, even lower during high-growth career phases. I challenge you, my brilliant listeners, to choose one area of your career where you will embrace the 60% standard. Whether it's skill-building, giving a presentation, applying for a new role, or investing in yourself through mentoring, certification, or coaching, I encourage you to aim for progress, not perfection.Women in tech, and all individuals striving for growth and success in their careers, will experience easier growth and faster results when you adopt this far more humane and brave standard. Take the brave step towards embracing the 60% standard and watch your career flourish.Hot topics from this episode:The Difference Between Functional and Human Performance StandardsExamples of Embracing the 60% StandardCall to Action - Embrace the 60% Standard in Career DevelopmentFor more information on how you can build your brave:[email protected]://tricksteinbach.com/https://www.instagram.com/nicoletricksteinbachhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/nicoletricksteinbach/https://www.facebook.com/NicoleTrickSteinbach

Then I dive into why I first chose to get career coaching, as well as why I decided to invest in more career and leadership coaching over the following decade of professional growth. Finally, 11 women from all over the world, from diverse industries, and unique roles share their specific and unique stories that led them to invest time, effort, and money in a career coach. S5 Ep 123E123 - Don't Leave Life On the Table, Make the Brave Career Change

“Leave money on the table before you leave life on the table.”Too many people are delaying a career or life change because they are scared of leaving money on the table. Many professionals have stock awards, performance bonuses, and vesting cycles that become the reasons to delay making a role, company, location, or life phase change. It results in people leaving priceless, irreplaceable life on the metaphorical table while they continue to spin in dissatisfaction, overwork, and being underpaid. In this episode, I share a number of examples from my own community of people allowing themselves to delay making a desired change due to an upcoming pay-off. Then I show you how to make a braver choice in five simple steps that map into the Build Your Brave Framework:1. Build Your Brave Framework, Clarity a. Evaluate your current position and phase: what is good, what is bad, and what is ugly (Build Your Brave Framework, Clarity) b. Envision your future: what is known, what is probable, what is possible2. Build Your Brave Framework, Momentum: Make a decision: leave life or leave money based on the specifics in front of you from steps 1 and 23. Build Your Brave Framework, Momentum: Design your strategy to a career shift that is unique and specific to you, your life, and what supports your energy and goal4. Build Your Brave Framework, Accountability: Step into your accountability and follow throughFollow these steps to ensure that you never, ever accidentally or unintentionally leave life on the table in exchange for money you don’t need. Your career growth and career success rests in your ability to make powerful choices to serve you mid- and long-term.Most people, including me, need support through this process. S4 Ep 122E122: How to Work Less with the Accountability Triangle

Learn how to work less with the Accountability Triangle by getting clear, focusing on the outcome, setting boundaries, and stop doing other people's jobs In this episode, I show you what accountability really is and how you can transform it to a super power for stressing and working less. You have most likely been taught a form of accountability that focuses on control and drives you towards burnout, especially if you have been socialized as a woman and now work as a woman in leadership, woman in tech, woman in stem, or more. For example:“Hold them accountable”“Make sure Bob is putting his numbers into the report correctly”“Your job is to get them to act”Sure these statements may sound innocent and simple – maybe even normal – but they really, really aren’t.In fact, these statements, and the mindset behind them, are destined to wear you out, slow down your career growth, limit your goal achievement, and cap your income. This form of accountability is actually not-so-hidden control:controlling otherscontrolling shared situationseven controlling the uncontrollableWhich is as far away from the true definition of accountability as you can get, almost the exact opposite. Webster’s Dictionary defines accountability as “an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions” (emphasis mine).True accountability is a habit that empowers you and is based on clarity, boundaries, communication, and excellence for YOU. Real accountability is a force that reduces that amount of stress you carry and the amount of extra effort you take on. Real accountability reduces conflicts, matures timelines and scopes, and focuses you on what you can actually control: YOU, your mindset, your actions, and your future. But if the definition is clear and the benefits are many, why (oh why?!) is accountability so misunderstood and misused? In other words, why are you so exhausted, overscheduled, and struggling?Well, the short answer is that if you take on too much governance, control, and delivery, calling it “accountability” other people get to do less themselves. In other words, you do their job. Or maybe their jobs. You do their tasks, their thinking and planning, and, most exhaustingly, their emotional labor. It is exhausting. You are exhausted because it is exhausting. So, how do you change it up, stop doing their job, and create space and time for yourself? I offer you the Accountability Triangle The Accountability Triangle is a framework I use with my clients. They consistently report that the Accountability Triangle helps them make clear choices that reduce their work effort by between one and three hours each week. The Accountability Triangle is rooted in my numerous certifications as well as established research, including:Erickson Solution Focused CoachingProsci Change Management Practitioner, specifically stakeholder managementProject Management Institute, specifically RACIKarpman Drama TriangleThe Power of Ted*Empowerment TriangleThe Triangle has three elements:a shared outcome or goalyou and your accountabilities and responsibilitiesa second person’s accountabilities and responsibilities.Register here to get access to the video and workbook combo: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/649b392bcac3e37f36e4a29dThank you so much for listening to season four! S4 Ep 121E121: Career Tip: Stop Making What Other People Do and Say About You

Particularly in your career, it is very important that you identify that what people say and do is about them, not about you. Are you turning data about other people – who they are, what they do, how they think – into information about you? For example, let's say you share an idea and your boss grabs it and makes it their own, potentially slowing down your career success. Do you make their behavior mean something about you? For example, that you shouldn't share ideas or that you don't deserve to be more visible? If you do, I say this with all my love, please start building the bravery to stop. Because you didn't learn anything about yourself, your career growth, your potential, or your quality of work. You did learn about your boss. Your boss (in this example) is a person who grabs ideas and slaps their name on it. That's it. Now you get to decide what to do with that new information. Instead of spinning, turn the new data into new information with the evaluation framework, the crucial conversation framework, and into your decision framework. Particularly if you are in leadership, tech, or STEM generally, this episode is for you. This week's Celebrate Brave podcast episode is a fiery one. Early listeners already shared it is also “one of the best." S4 Ep 112Mindset Design - How One Rewrite Helps You in Your Career E112

In this episode, I challenge a common wisdom about the universe and share my own belief instead. My perspective may help you shift how you look at events out of your control in a way that helps you build your brave, grow your career, and hit your life goals. You may be like me and have heard “the universe is challenging me” to explain experiences in life. I don’t think this is helpful. In fact, I see that belief lead to exhaustion, overworking, over-producing, and over-serving in myself and others. Instead, I accept to shift your mindset to “the universe is confirming me” to release pressure, and constraint, and stress less while you earn more. This is an example of mindset design. S4 Ep 108E108: When You Grow Out Of A Career or Phase You Love

We don’t talk enough about a beautiful, brave truth about growth: you will grow out of everything you love in your life and career right now.You will outgrow that job. That living space. That community. That relationship. That hobby. You will outgrow everything. Especially when you are building your brave, you will ever more quickly outgrow who you are and what you do, no matter how much you love it at this moment.Since we don’t talk about this enough -- especially when it comes to career growth, in stepping into leadership, and thriving in STEM industries -- it makes sense that you get stuck, repeating your own indoctrination:“Be happy with what you have”,“But this is what you wanted!”(the worst!) “Who am I to want more?”…. But getting more unhappy and stagnant with each breath. I struggle with growing out of life and career phases that I actually love. At the start of 2023 I had a life lesson in this. Thankfully, a recent conversation with someone who has known me for over two decades broke open my struggle and allowed me to leap into clarity. I share the wisdom from that conversation with you. Please know: not only is it okay to outgrow what you loved and yearned for before, but that growth is something to celebrate. Listen for more. S4 Ep 106E106: Rest Is Not A Reward in Your Brave Career; Burn-Out is Not the Goal

Rest is not a reward. Rest is your right. Choosing to rest is choosing your brave. Based on my own resistance – as well as my clients’ – to choosing rest as a part of my bravery, you may want to skip this episode but I implore you to listen in. It is okay to feel some resistance, we have all been indoctrinated within a society that celebrates exhaustion and busyness. Yet, when you transform your mindset about rest, your entire life will change. While the process of learning to welcome more rest into your life is uncomfortable for most people, the more you create a habit of rest, weaving it into every day as a foundational aspect of your life, you see your stress plummet, your joy sky-rocket, and your legacy take shape.Being constantly exhausted isn’t normal. Rest is your right. I help my clients learn how to rest and incorporate it throughout their lives. I can also help you. Listen in. Make sure you are on my email list for all the good stuff and be in the know at: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/63b95b9237a7fb86b1f98f71 For more information on how you can build your brave:[email protected]://tricksteinbach.com/https://www.instagram.com/nicoletricksteinbachhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/nicoletricksteinbach/https://www.facebook.com/NicoleTrickSteinbach
