Making Friends with Your Emotions

What we usually do is try to fight against our strong emotions, suppress them or get totally tangled up in them. None of these are going to be helpful. The more we fight against the emotion, the stronger it becomes. Acting this way, we will eventually make the emotion into our enemy. But emotions are not our enemies, they are our teachers. They don’t just suddenly appear for no reason. They come to inform us that something is happening, and we need to deal with it. Changing Your Behaviour

Karma isn't some magical or mystical thing handed out by some higher being. It is simply patterns of behaviour. In this podcast, Yeshe Rabgye explains that karma is totally in our hands, so if we want to change our lives, we have to change our behaviour. We can do this by using the acronym AWARE (Attention, Why, Assess, Reality, Examine). Sense Of Self - The Buddha Dharma Series

In Buddhism, one of the most difficult teachings for people to understand is anatman or non-self. The doctrine states that in humans there is no permanent entity that can be called a self or a soul. This denial of “any Soul or Self” is what distinguishes Buddhism from other major religions, such as Christianity and Hinduism, and gives Buddhism its uniqueness. This sense of being a permanent, solid, autonomous self is an illusion. The problem is this illusion is so ingrained into our ordinary experience. We have a sense of a permanent, individual self, but that is all it is, a sense, a feeling. Four Immeasurables: Open Hearted Joy - The Buddha Dharma Series

The fourth immeasurable is open-hearted joy. What we are appreciating is the happiness someone else is experiencing. With this quality we feel real joy at their happiness. This practice is the perfect antidote for envy and it deals a killer blow to jealousy and pride. Happiness is fleeting, so to begrudge what little joy people can find in their lives is a very unkind quality. What we need to do is rejoice when happiness comes another’s way. Four Immeasurables: Compassion - The Buddha Dharma Series

Compassion is the third of the four immeasurables and it is an understanding that the world is full of suffering, and a heartfelt wish that this suffering will come to an end or at least lessen—for ourselves and others. Through compassion, the fact that everyone is suffering remains vivid in our minds. Everyone is suffering, so everyone deserves it. Keep in mind that compassion is for the person and not their behaviour. If we think like this, we will be able to cultivate compassion for all human beings. Four Immeasurables: Kind - Heartedness -The Buddha Dharma Series

The second of the four immeasurables is kind-heartedness. This is not about how we feel, but about how we relate to these feelings. It invites us to drop our habitual patterns of reactivity and to free ourselves from emotional habits which serve neither ourselves nor anyone else. Sometimes our goodwill only covers people that are useful, pleasing or amusing to us. This is not how we should divide groups of people; we have to see people through the eyes of kindness. We must open our hearts to everyone. Not every thought radiates kindness to others, so how can we cultivate kind-heartedness? A great place to start is by listening to this podcast and doing the meditation. Four Immeasurables: Equanimity - The Buddha Dharma Series

When we look at the world, we can clearly see how hard it is to attain a balanced mind, as we are continuously in a flux of rises and falls. These lift us up one moment and fling us down the next. This is true for everyone; we are all the same. So, if that is the case, why do we discriminate against others? We are all in the same boat, all trying our best to ride the same waves of life. Equanimity is where we do not distinguish between our friends, the people we dislike or strangers, but regard everyone as equal. What we are trying to do here is remove the boundaries between ourselves and others by discarding our discriminations. Eight Worldly Concerns - The Buddha Dharma Series

We all have concerns and this is just part of being human. But there are eight concerns that bring us unnecessary suffering because we become attached to them or are adverse to them. The ones we call desirable are gain, status, praise and pleasure. The four we call undesirables being loss, insignificance, blame and pain. It doesn’t matter if we see them as desirable or undesirable, they are all ultimately causes of our suffering. Seeing Clearly - The Buddha Dharma Series

In the fourth truth, he explained what path we can take to start the process of destroying the three poisons. This path is known as the eightfold path. This path is not a religious path and doesn’t require rituals, prayers, ceremonies, or even for you to become a Buddhist. It can be looked upon as a path that leads to us living a responsible life and so anybody can practise it. So, it isn’t a Buddhist practice, it is more of a lifestyle practice. The Causes Of Suffering - The Buddha Dharma Series

The first noble truth describes how life has suffering running through it and in the second truth Buddha gave some of the reasons for this suffering. There is not just one cause of our suffering, as there is not one cause of anything. Things come into being through a series of causes and conditions, and that is the same for our suffering. However, there are three main things that cause us emotional and psychological suffering, namely, the three poisons. They are clinging desire, anger and aversion and unawareness. The First Noble Truth - The Buddha Dharma Series

Buddha‘s first teaching was on the four noble truths, and it still remains the very foundation on which Buddhism is built. It was these four realities that the Buddha came to understand during his meditation under the bodhi tree, and they provide a conceptual framework for all of Buddhist thought. The first reality is ‘There is suffering.’ The word suffering here means a dissatisfaction, discontentment, an uneasy feeling running through our lives. Emotional Suffering

What would you say if I told you the largest part of your emotional suffering was caused by yourself? I expect you would be doubtful or even shocked, but it is true. The way we live our lives, our beliefs, biases, concepts and social conditioning all cause us to mentally suffer. By suffering I mean our minds get disturbed, we become disillusioned, dissatisfied, discontented. This often results in stress, anxiety and depression. None of these are helpful or healthy. Understanding Consciousness

The Yogacara school of Buddhism states that there are eight consciousnesses, and these teach us how to understand consciousness, so we can free ourselves from afflictive emotions, such as anger, selfishness and so on. Personally, I have always found this school of thought to be very logical, even though later schools of Buddhism refute some of the Yogacara findings. I believe that if we want to understand our minds, we need to understand our consciousness. My latest book 'Open Awareness, Open Mind' is available now on Amazon and Kindle - https://amzn.to/35uboLq
