Ep. 214: Everything that happened to the Buckeyes at Big Ten Media Days

Buckeye Talk is a little late this week, but with good reason. The offseason is over. Doug and Stephen also get into what OSU players Jordan Fuller, K.J. Hill and Jonathan Cooper had to say. On this Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises is joined by Ralph Russo, the national college football writer for the Associated Press, to talk about where Ryan Day and the Buckeyes currently fit in the national landscape. Ep. 212: Rewatching the 2006 Ohio State-Michigan game

There's something a little different about this Buckeye Talk episode. As promised for several weeks, the pod attempted a rewatch of a classic Ohio State game and picked one of the obvious choices -- Ohio State-Michigan from 2006. Doug Lesmerises covered that game 13 years ago and he's joined by Jake Burns to rewatch and relive that 1-2 showdown headlined by eventual Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. Doug tells some stories, Jake provides great X-and-O insight as to how college football has evolved and the 90-minute experience tells the tale of that classic game. You can find the game on YouTube and watch along at home, or you can listen at the gym or in your car without the game and you'll be fine. Either way, enjoy this different version of Buckeye Talk. Ep. 211: Phil Steele previews the Ohio State-Michigan battle brewing in 2019

Buckeye Talk is back after a week break with one of our podcast’s favorite guests of the season. It’s Northeast Ohio’s own Phil Steele, who puts out one of the most respected college football preview magazines of the season. This is his 25th year of producing the preview. He joined Doug Lesmerises for a deep dive on the Buckeyes and their path in the Big Ten. They talked about where Justin Fields ranks in terms of quarterbacks in the nation, the toughest teams on Ohio State’s schedule, and why this might be the year that Michigan finally gets the edge on the Buckeyes. Plus, Doug broke down the strongest and weakest position groups for the Buckeyes in the coming years and took your questions. Back with another Buckeye Talk, and it's truncated this week. Also, we're taking next week off for the first week completely free of Buckeye Talk in a very, very long time. With that in mind, Doug Lesmerises spent this week resetting the table with what he thinks about OSU football at the moment, so there will be a clean slate when Buckeye Talk returns. Ep. 209: Will the Buckeyes keep winning almost every close game without Urban Meyer?

Urban Meyer was 22-3 in games that were down to one score in the fourth quarter, a remarkable record of resilience at Ohio State. How did Meyer do that in seven years with the Buckeyes, and will they keep that up under Ryan Day? On the latest Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises is joined by listener Mark Roberts, who did the research on Meyer's record, to discuss why the Buckeyes won so many tight ones. Mark also takes time to explain why he thinks Doug is wrong for even suggesting the Buckeyes could go 9-3 this season. Then Doug takes questions on everything from the new Big Ten commissioner to how much receiver recruit Julian Fleming should play as a freshman. All that on the new Buckeye Talk. Ep. 207: What Michigan, Penn State and Nebraska think of Ohio State without Urban Meyer

Ohio State dominated the Big Ten during Urban Meyer’s seven years as head coach. Ohio State was 54-4 in regular-season Big Ten play. The Buckeyes had the best record in their division (sometimes tied for first) all seven seasons, making the Big Ten Championship four times and winning three of them. The rest of the league has been waiting for a shot. Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa and Purdue each beat the Meyer-led Buckeyes during the regular season, while the Spartans also knocked out the Buckeyes in the 2013 Big Ten Championship. But everyone else never figured out what it was like to beat Meyer in scarlet and gray. Now they get to try Ryan Day. To see how that coaching change, and the Buckeyes as a whole, are viewed around the league, Doug Lesmerises called three great writers: • Sam McKewon from the Omaha World-Herald, who covers Nebraska • Aaron McMann from MLive.com, who covers Michigan and • Bob Flounders from Pennlive.com, who covers Penn State. They gave their views of the Buckeyes, and checked in on the challenges and expectations for those teams this season. These are the three teams Doug thinks will provide the stiffest tests for Day in year one. And you’ll know a lot more about them after this podcast. Plus, as always, Doug takes your questions. Ep. 205: Rating the state of the Ohio State football program

Doug Lesmerises received some help from a new source on this episode of Buckeye Talk -- the listeners. Ep. 204: How is Ohio State recruiting under Ryan Day, as a 2021 QB commits?

Buckeye Talk has been planning a recruiting episode for weeks, and just as it hits, news breaks. Great timing. This week, Doug Lesmerises, Tim Bielik and Stephen Means break down the verbal commitment of 2021 quarterback Kyle McCord hours after it happened. McCord, a four-star from St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, announced his decision for the Buckeyes on Tuesday morning. That's not all. Ohio State also added two other QBs since the last podcast episode, and JP Andrade and Gunnar Hoak are examined. And then it's time to get away from the QB recruiting and into the rest of the class. Doug, Stephen and Tim discuss Ryan Day's national and Ohio strategy in 2020 recruiting; how the Buckeyes shape up in terms of top-100 recruits; the recruits not committed that the Buckeyes need the most; and position groups that must be targeted as we look at future rosters. It's a reset of everything recruiting related under Ryan Day, plus your questions about the team, in a jam-packed episode of Buckeye Talk. Ep. 200: New players, new plans, new schemes to watch in Ohio State's spring game

Ohio State's spring football game on Saturday will offer the first public viewing of the Ryan Day offense and the Greg Mattison/Jeff Hafley defense. And while the Buckeyes won't make any decisions about which players are going to play in the fall based off Saturday, fans might be able to get a feel for how the Buckeyes are going to play. On the latest Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means dove into that idea, talking about the players they're most interested in watching and which ones could really shine. Then came a basketball discussion, about Kaleb Wesson's decision to take a look at the NBA, and where the Buckeyes stand after two years of Chris Holtmann. Ohio State landed the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation in both 2017 and 2018. If the Buckeyes are going to make the College Football Playoff in 2019, it will be on the backs of those players. So how are they developing? In the latest episode of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises dove into the 24 players ranked among the top 100 recruits in the nation in those two years and figured out how many of them are on a strong development track. That was interesting. Then Doug took a lot of questions from the subscribers to the new text app, as well as questions from Twitter, as always. He talked Justin Fields and Damon Arnette, Ryan Day and Jeff Hafley, Jaelen Gill and Nicholas Petit-Frere and more. The spring game is on the horizon, and that will be previewed in next week’s episode. But a lot was covered in regards to OSU's spring progress in this episode. Ep. 187: Would Dwayne Haskins have torn up Alabama like Trevor Lawrence did?

Alabama’s defense was beatable in the National Championship game on Monday night. Clemson and true freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence beat the Tide. Would Ohio State and quarterback Dwayne Haskins have done the same? In the first Buckeye Talk Podcast back in Ohio since the Rose Bowl, Doug and Stephen imagined the Buckeyes in the title game and how Ohio State’s offense and defense would have fared against the Tigers. Then they broke down the impact of all the Buckeyes players and coaches that have stayed, have departed and have been added in the past week. That ranges from players like Dwayne Haskins, K.J. Hill and Michael Jordan to coaches like Greg Schiano, Al Washington and Mike Yurcich. And yes, they said goodbye to Bill Davis, a Buckeye Talk favorite, while taking your questions. Ep. 186: Which Ohio State players and coaches are staying and going and a Rose Bowl wrap

In the final daily podcast from the Rose Bowl, Doug Lesmerises wraps up Ohio State's 28-23 win over Washington and looks at what happened as the Huskies closed the gap in the second half, outgaining the Buckeyes 293 yards to 92 over the final 30 minutes. Then it's on to the future with your questions, and what comes next with players and assistant coaches who might stay and might leave. We break all of them down. We also ponder how to rank Urban Meyer's seven Ohio State teams and how long Ryan Day will stay as the coach of the Buckeyes. Will he put in more years or fewer years than Meyer? It's time to head back to Ohio soon, but thanks for listening to all six our daily podcasts from Los Angeles. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Ep. 185: Rose Bowl preview and coaching ruthlessness

Our fifth daily Rose Bowl podcast is, at long last, a game preview, and we made it a party. Recorded in the media room in the lead-up to midnight West Coast time on New Year’s Eve, Doug Lesmerises was joined by old friends Bill Landis and Ari Wasserman of The Athletic, as well as James Grega of Buckeye Sports Bulletin and Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors to talk about the matchup between the Buckeyes and the Washington Huskies, and much more. It’s a rollicking Buckeye Talk with some background noise, and some of you may find it annoying. But it’s definitely a different vibe from a typical show, so give it a shot. Our final daily Rose Bowl podcast will come at you after the Rose Bowl, when we’ll break down the game and get into how Urban Meyer handled his farewell, while taking all your questions about this season. As always, thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep. 184: Should Ohio State fans be rooting for Tate Martell?

There’s more Tate Martell discussion on the latest daily Rose Bowl Buckeye Talk podcast, because two stories and a video on Martell at cleveland.com on Sunday wasn’t enough. Beyond the potential quarterback battle between Martell and Justin Fields in the spring, Doug Lesmerises talked about his conversation at media day with linebackers coach and podcast favorite Bill Davis. There’s a look at the 2019 receiver room, an explanation of an injury on the offensive line and some Tim May talk. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk. Ep. 183: Would Ohio State have done better in the playoff than Notre Dame and Oklahoma?

In another daily Rose Bowl Buckeye Talk podcast, Doug Lesmerises examines the two College Football Playoff semifinals and whether Ohio State would have fared better than Notre Dame and Oklahoma. Remember, Ohio State lost to Clemson 31-0 two years ago, and Notre Dame lost to Clemson 30-3 on Saturday. Doug asked how close the Buckeyes are to the level of Clemson and Alabama and how the Buckeyes can stick among college football's royalty. Also covered was a question about Ryan Day's style compared to Urban Meyer's, and what Dwayne Haskins said about Justin Fields on Saturday. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Ep. 182: Which Ohio State freshmen are ready to take starting jobs next year?

Are there freshmen who might be ready to take starting jobs away from Ohio State veterans next season? On this daily Rose Bowl podcast we are looking ahead, because, again, no one really cares that much about Washington. So Doug Lesmerises answered your questions about Ohio State recruiting, about California recruiting, about the H-backs next season, about Purdue and Nick Bosa, and about the freshmen, especially on defense, who will push for playing time in 2019. Ep. 181: How much blame does Greg Schiano deserve for Ohio State’s defense?

Sorry we're late getting this to you, but here is our first daily Buckeye Talk from the Rose Bowl. Doug Lesmerises is here in Los Angeles and breaks down everything that happened with Ohio State interviews and practice on Thursday as the Buckeyes get ready for the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl against Washington. The plan is to do daily half-hour podcasts, but Doug likes the sound of his own voice (and coughs), so this one checks in at over 50 minutes. Topics include: • Dwayne Haskins and the NFL Draft• Greg Schiano and the Ohio State defense• Urban Meyer's shadow and Ryan Day• Washington's secondary• The Buckeyes as nearly 7-point favorites Doug will drop daily pods on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, before a final podcast after the game for Wednesday. Ep. 180: Justin Fields, Tate Martell, Zach Harrison and Ohio State's future

Ohio State signed a 15-player class on National Signing Day on Wednesday, but those recruits weren't the only players shaping the future of the Buckeyes. On this Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means talk about five-star defensive end Zach Harrison and the OSU class ranked third overall in average player rating. They also take on the possible transfer to Ohio State of Georgia quarterback Justin Fields and what that might mean for current OSU QB Tate Martell. Stephen and Doug recorded this podcast in a Panera Bread on Ohio State's campus Wednesday night, and while they were talking about the quarterback position, guess who walked in? Tate Martell. It was that kind of day and that kind of podcast. Oh, they also addressed whether the story of four robots killing 29 scientists in Japan was true or not. Ep. 179: Get ready for college football's eight-team playoff

A whole lot is changing with Ohio State football, including, maybe, the way the Buckeyes compete for a championship. This Buckeye Talk episode is chock full of Ohio State info as Stephen Means and Doug Lesmerises join you from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, where on Wednesday they spoke with about 15 OSU players in the final interview session in Columbus before the Buckeyes head for California and the Rose Bowl after Christmas. Doug is back from sounding like he was dead on last week’s podcast, having staved off influenza, and he and Stephen go into everything going on with the program, from what’s next for Ryan Day to what’s ahead on National Signing Day on Dec. 19 to the quarterback battle next season. They did not discuss anything about Washington, the Rose Bowl opponent, because no one cares about that yet. They did talk about how soon an eight-team playoff could arrive in college football. There’s a lot going on and they’re here to share it with you on this Buckeye Talk, with 90 percent less coughing. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Ep. 178: What Ohio State coaching staff changes will Ryan Day make?

Urban Meyer will finish his Ohio State career at the Rose Bowl. Ryan Day will take over as the full-time head coach on Jan. 2. Crazy year, eh? On this edition of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises sat in his basement and sounded like Eeyore while complaining about being sick, but he also managed to squeeze in many of the more than 100 questions listeners had on this momentous day for the OSU football program. Why did athletic director Gene Smith choose Day to take over? Which current assistant coaches will Day keep? What’s a reasonable level of expectation for success with Day? Ohio State is headed to the Rose Bowl. So what happened with the College Football Playoff? On this latest Buckeyes Talk Podcast, Stephen Means and I take all your questions about the 12-1 Big Ten champs and their postseason, and why that postseason doesn’t include a shot at winning a national title. Ep. 176: Why doesn't the playoff committee love Ohio State more?

Ohio State is No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and we're back with another Buckeye Talk Podcast to attempt to crawl into the minds of the playoff committee members. Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means take all your questions on the Buckeyes' current playoff chances. We imagine a world where Dwayne Haskins is back at Ohio State next year, even though he won't be. We praise again the Buckeyes who played best in the Michigan win. And we do it all from McDonald's - they let us inside this time. But that's not all. Two guests join us. First is former Ohio State running back Robert Smith of Fox Sports who revists the Michigan victory, ruminates on 14 out of 15 for Ohio State in the rivalry and tells us where Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh go from here. Then we have Ralph Russo, the Associated Press national college football writer. He puts Ohio State in a national context for us, imagining what the Buckeyes might do against Alabama, what they might do against Oklahoma and where the OSU program stands among the best in the nation. It's another packed Buckeye Talk. Come on in. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep. 175: Michigan postgame, Is Urban Meyer in Jim Harbaugh's head?

Ohio State thumped Michigan 62-39. Yeah, you saw it. But how do you explain it? Stephen Means and Doug Lesmerises of cleveland.com took all your questions after the Buckeyes won the Big Ten East and moved onto the Big Ten Championship by beating Michigan for the 14th time in 15 tries. We were so eager to get to your questions, we answered them inside a car in the parking lot of McDonald's. It's a postgame Buckeye Talk about the 11-1 Buckeyes. Ep.174: What the Michigan game means for Ohio State's future

In the Michigan week episode of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means of cleveland.com address not only which team should win, but what the outcome will mean for both programs. Ohio State and Michigan are both 10-1, with the Buckeyes No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings and the Wolverines No. 4. The result Saturday will affect both programs and how coaches Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer are viewed in victory and defeat. We touch on Thanksgiving a bit, but once again, there's so much football intrigue going on with the Buckeyes, it's hard to spend too much time talking stuffing and pumpkin pie. Ep. 173: Maryland postgame - Ohio State's defense is indefensible

Yes, 51 minutes and 535 yards. Ohio State gave up that against Maryland on Saturday, and won anyway. On this postgame version of Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means try to figure out what happened, whether the OSU defense can be fixed, and how the Buckeyes could possibly compete with Michigan next week. Ep. 172: Dwayne Haskins as a Buckeye and maybe top QB prospect in 2019 NFL Draft

This is a giant Buckeye Talk episode, basically three podcasts in one - on the Ohio State team, on the College Football Playoff and on Dwayne Haskins as a Buckeye and an NFL prospect. First, Doug Lesmerises and Stephen Means talked about the latest story that angered Ohio State, then answered a bunch of your questions on Tate Martell, Michigan, press conferences and more. Then, Ryan Aber, the Oklahoma writer from The Oklahoman, joined to talk about how fans of the Sooners are viewing their team. If you're an OSU fan concerned about your 9-1 team and its playoff chances, guess what - Oklahoma fans are just like you. Then we welcomed Ian Wharton, who provided the best Dwayne Haskins breakdown you'll get anywhere. Wharton analyzed Haskins this year, compared him to recent quarterbacks drafted in the first round and discussed where he could go in the 2019 NFL Draft. In Wharton's opinion, it's very high. We had some editing issues, so if the audio quality is a little lacking at times, we apologize. But the quality of the content makes it worth it. Ep. 171: Michigan State postgame - Are the Buckeyes as good as they're going to get?

Ohio State beat a top 20 team on the road by 20. What else do you want from the Buckeyes? How much better could they get? On this postgame Buckeye Talk Podcast, Stephen Means and I closed down the pressbox in Spartan Stadium by answering your questions for 45 minutes on Ohio State's 266- victory We started with the way the Buckeyes used Tate Martell, then got into the defense, punter Drue Chrisman and just how much more the Buckeyes could show us this season. Ohio State travels to Maryland next week before hosting Michigan to end the season. They still have a path to the College Football Playoff, but did they pass the eye test on Saturday? Ep. 170: Imagine the Ohio State Buckeyes as angry underdogs

No. 10 Ohio State isn't much of a favorite (just 3.5 points) at No. 18 Michigan State on Saturday, and the Buckeyes are looking like they'll be underdogs when they host No. 4 Michigan to end the regular season. Kind of a weird spot for Ohio State at the moment. At 8-1 and 5-1 in the Big Ten, are the Buckeyes about to play their best game of the year, or will they continue to be stuck and searching, at least in a few areas? On this episode of Buckeye Talk, new cleveland.com OSU writer Stephen Means joins Doug Lesmerises for his first full midweek podcast, after debuting in the postgame podcast following the Buckeyes 36-31 win over Nebraska. You had a lot of questions for Stephen about his food preferences, and we got to those. But first, we looked at the Buckeyes from a positive angle, as requested and suggested by one listener who found the postgame pod a little too negative. This isn't a perfect team, but for at least the first part of this episode, we looked at what is working for the Buckeyes and how it might continue. Ep. 169: Who is Ohio State's leader after Buckeyes squeak past Nebraska?

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There have been plenty of questions with Ohio State this season - the run game, the red zone offense, the defense in general. But after the Buckeyes' 36-31 win Saturday over 2-7 Nebraska, some fans questioned something else - Ohio State's leadership, energy and will. On this postgame Buckeye Talk podcast from the hours after the Buckeyes moved to 8-1, Doug Lesmerises is joined by new cleveland.com Ohio State writer Stephen Means, who covered his first game in his new assignment on Saturday. As usual, your questions drove the discussion. And despite the fact that Ohio State did get a win after losing to Purdue two weeks ago and then getting a week to fix things, there weren't a lot of positives in the discussion. So what do the Buckeyes still need to fix? And will they find their way? It's another episode with a search for answers. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
