Ep 360"Ask Me Anything About Ketosis & Ironman" Premium Podcast with Ben Greenfield
In this premium podcast with Ben Greenfield, Ben answers the following questions about ketosis, Ironman training, nutrition and more: Do you use bitter melon to help buffer blood sugar spikes in a effort to continue producing blood ketones? If yes, how important is the timing of taking the bitter melon for this and how much do you take each time? Have you had any breaks from ketosis where you carb binge? Please let us know about your experiences with oxaloacetate -- most importantly about the safety of it and how much (in your opinion) it boosted your performance. I'm doing your TriathlonDominator.com plan, and am curious as to how you typically train right now... Are you still doing predominantly H.I.I.T. with long Z2 efforts sprinkled in? How much does it cost you a month to eat that way? Carbs are so cheap and yummy. Is there any advantage to adding hard to find meat like lamb and bison to my diet? What are your thoughts on barefoot/minimalist running? ( thinking performance & injury prevention) Do you recommend anything for me in my first 5K? So far I’ve been working out for the last 2 months, 6 days a week, eating ok, I do cheat but I just pray I make it to the end. What do you think of Ezekiel bread? I haven’t heard much, but I love bread and people say it is better for you. I just read some good protein things with brewer’s yeast? Yay or nay? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep 349Is It OK To Be Addicted To Exercise?
Do you feel like you're just not normal when you miss your workout? Do you get grumpy when you skip your planned physical activity? Do you sometimes sacrifice work and relationships to be able to squeeze in an exercise session? Are you addicted to the feeling you get during or after a long run or bike ride or weight lifting workout? Is this stuff normal, and is it OK to be "addicted to exercise"? In today's podcast episode with "The Long Run" author Mishka Shubaly (pictured right), Mishka and I explore exercise addiction, and whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise. Who is Mishka Shubaly? After receiving an expensive MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, Mishka realized he was more interested in playing music in dive bars than writing. He lived out of a Toyota minivan for a year, touring nonstop, and has shared the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists among others. His Kindle Singles for Amazon have all been bestsellers. He writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception and their aftermath. His work has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness and heart. The book "The Long Run" is his mini-memoir detailing his transformation from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultrarunner. Mishka Shubaly lives in Brooklyn where he writes music and plays bass for a band called the Freshkills. During our interview, I ask Mishka: -How does the experience you feel during, say, a run compare from a psychological standpoint to how you felt when drinking or using drugs? -Because of things like the runner's high and endorphin release, do you think that people with "addictive personalities" have a greater predisposition towards endurance sports? -Do you think that positive addictions like exercise can be taken too far? -What are your top tips for people who find themselves potentially addicted to exercise, or working out to the extent to which it might damage their body or detract from their relationships or job? Do you have your own questions, comments, feedback or thoughts about whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise? Leave your thoughts at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=14483 and be sure to grab Mishka's book for $1.99. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She tried allergy shots, muscle testing and acupressure therapy and acupuncture, and all the over the counter remedies as well. What do you think about allergies? Are they over diagnosed? And what do you think of these therapies and how they affect people? ~ In my response to Allergy, I recommend an autoimmune diet. I also recommend the podcast episode about How To Fix Exercise Induced Asthmas In Kids. During our discussion, Dr. Minkoff and I discuss the following resources: -Keeping kids away from potential digestive irritants or foods that could trigger an autoimmune reaction, especially gluten (a very good book I recommend on this topic is “Gut & Psychology Syndrome“). -Stool test to asses whether kids are low in HCL, and if they are, getting them on an HCL supplement. -Red blood cell test for magnesium (look for a naturopathic physician in your area who may be able to order this) and use of a magnesium supplement if deficiency is found. -Use

Ep 347What An Extreme Motocross Athlete Can Teach You About Fitness (And A Free Extreme Fitness Routine).
Wil Hahn, a professional motocross racer, broke his hand in practice at the last round of the Supercross series, raced the main event with a broken hand, got 3rd place, then went on to won the overall title by a couple points. Motocross is an extreme sport... ...outdoor motocross races occur in the heat of the day at for 30 minutes plus 2 laps, riding in full gear at lactate threshold for the entire time... ..."armpump” can be a serious, painful problem when racing... ...dangerous levels of dehydration are extremely common... ...and in this BenGreenfieldFitness phone app insider interview with Wil, you'll find out what kind of fitness and nutrition plan is necessary to succeed in one of the toughest sports on the face of the planet. Wil and I compare Ironman triathlon to motocross, talk about Wil's motocross fitness routine, what Wil eats and drinks for motocross, tracking heart rates, racing with an injury, and more! Don't believe that motocross is an extreme sport that just might beat up your body more than any other sport? Then watch this crazy crash sequence video with Wil Hahn, and then keep reading for a motocross fitness routine... An Extreme Fitness Routine Motocross requires a combination of coordination, strength, power and extreme lactic acid buffering capabilities. To build this kind of extreme fitness, try the following full body exercise routine, performed three times per week. -5-10 minute dynamic warm-up (Don’t know what a dynamic warm-up is? Read this mobility article.) -3-4 sets of 6-10 reps of each of the following, performed as either a circuit for an extreme twist, or with 60 seconds to 2 minutes recovery after each exercise for a more traditional approach (get exercise videos at YouTube.com/BenGreenfieldFitness) Vertical Pulling (i.e. pull-up) Vertical Pushing (i.e. overhead press) Horizontal Pulling (i.e. seated row) Horizontal Pushing (i.e. incline bench press) Double or Single Leg Strength (i.e. squat) Lift (i.e. deadlift) 3-4 sets of 6-10 reps of any or all of the following, performed as either a circuit, or with 60 seconds to 2 minutes recovery after each exercise: Slams (i.e. medicine ball slams) Throws (i.e. medicine ball throws) Tosses (i.e. medicine ball underhand throws) Jumps (i.e. double leg box jumps) Finish with 3 sets of 12-15 reps, back-to-back, of each of the following: Twists (i.e. cable torso twists) Core flexion (i.e. hanging leg raises) Then, at a separate time of day, or on your “non-lifting” day, do 20-30 minutes of high intensity interval training, which would include treadmill or cycling intervals, rowing, swimming, sprint repeats etc., preferably with time lengths of 20-60 seconds and rest intervals of 10-30 seconds. Assuming you're also practicing or playing a sport, this routine is more than enough to get you fit fast. If you're not practicing or playing a sport, you may want to add in a 2-4 extra 30-60 minute "tempo" or aerobic workouts. After you take a listen to the interview (using the free BenGreenfieldFitness phone app), or after you try the motocross fitness routine, leave your questions, comments and feedback at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=13203See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How To Use Hot Baths For Performance -- Michael wrote in to ask @ 00:26:56 In your recent podcast, you mentioned that taking a 20-minute hot bath two days before a hard effort or race could be beneficial. Is there anything to the frequency of this practice? Currently, I'm training for for an iron-distance triathlon, so every Saturday is a long ride followed by a transition run (and Sunday is a long run). If I did a soak EVERY Thursday, would that be too much... or to a degree that the practice would lose its effectiveness as you reported? Natural Remedies for Dry Eyes -- Jenny says @ 00:34:09 She has had a problem with her eyes being really dry. She has used drops and increased her omega3s. That didn't help and it has started to effect her vision as well. Her doctor told her that she needs to use a prescription eye drop for the rest of her life - and she really doesn't want to do that! Do you have any tips on getting her eyes not to be so dry. ~ In my response, I recommend SuperEssentials fish oil for dry eyes. I also recommend this portable humidifier. How To Enhance Vision -- Benjamin wrote in to ask @ 00:42:15 I just found out from my optometrist that I may need vision correction, and of course, they're recommending I go with contact lenses or prescription glasses. How Your Feet Affect Your Butt -- Jim says @ 00:49:28 He has been rolling his feet out with a golf ball lately (after some hard training and racing) and experienced some extreme glute spasms later in the day while doing some yard work. Aja says @ 00:24:49 She is getting ready to compete in a body building competition, bikini division. The prep is pretty extreme so she wants to minimize the damage to her body. She usually likes to go the holistic route but wants to know if you think BCAAs are harmful or helpful. Are there other supplements she should be taking? ~ In my response, I tell her Aja to use liver and thyroid supplements, but you need to be very careful with the source of that dessicated liver and thymus gland. Standard Process thyroid is decent at around two tablets a day and then for liver look for Argentinian and organic. NOW Foods dessicated liver powder is good for this, at 1 rounded tablespoon per day. I also recommend the Muscle Gain Pack and supplements for low cortisol/high progesterone from the Sara Gottfried interview. Supplements for high cortisol: Omega 3 and Phosphatidylserine Supplements for low progesterone: Natural Vitamin C supplement, Saffron, Chasteberry. Avi says @ 00:34:11 He did back to back marathons. The first one he kept his heart rate in his "recovery zone" (10 beats below his MAF). The second one he just ran "comfortably" (without a HRM). He has recovered very quickly (by Wednesday he felt like he could run again). He feels like he has recovered better from this double marathon than he has from his previous harder efforts. Why was he able to recover so quickly? ~ In my response, I recommend episode #218, about how to recover as fast as possible after a marathon. Jenny says @ 00:41:26 How much wine do you think is healthy, safe and ok for managing weight? She weighs 120lbs and is 5'6" and would like to know how much wine is ok to have in any given week? What is a good guideline? Rob says @ 00:48:46 He is currently drinking a "spotted cow" ale and is wondering if you, Ben, drink any sort of beer at all? He understands that it is not the greatest for you but there are a bunch of running events that have beer associated with it in one way or another. Can it be all bad? ~ In my response to Rob, I mention this NOW Foods gluten digesting enzyme. Jose says @ 00:57:59 He has very dry knuckles, skin around his scalp and eyebrows. It comes and goes but when it comes he gets big flakes coming off his scalp, very dry skin on his hands and red blotches around his eyebrows. He

Ep 310APP ONLY VIDEO: Dave Asprey: “Mycotoxins & Superhuman Performance”
Have a race, event, Ironman triathlon or anything else coming up? I’d reconsider blue cheese and other “moldy” foods in your build-up – here’s a few: sour cream, buttermilk and sour milk; cured, pickled and smoked meats and fish; prepackaged meats, like lunch meats, salami, smoked fish and some sardines; pickles, olives, capers, salad dressing or ketchup; vinegar and soy sauce. I’m not saying always completely ‘em – but nuke ‘em in final few important weeks of performance – and that would include moldy hotel room coffee too. Dave Asprey is the founder of The Bulletproof Executive. He is a Silicon Valley investor, computer security expert, and entrepreneur who spent 15 years and $250,000 to hack his own biology. He upgraded his brain by >20 IQ points, lowered his biological age, and lost 100 lbs without using calories or exercise. The Financial Times calls him a “bio-hacker who takes self- quantification to the extreme of self-experimentation.” His writing has been published by the New York Times and Fortune, and he’s presented at Wharton, Kellogg, the University of California, and Singularity University. She has recently switched over to a new pill that is higher in estrogen (she was diagnosed with low estrogen) and is wondering if the weight gain is psychological or if there is something to it? ~ In my response, I recommend the books The Hormone Cure and The Pill. Avi says @ 00:39:12 He recently listened to the podcast episode you did with the creator of the Earth Pulse. He is wondering what the difference is between that and the earthing mat that Dave Asprey uses. There is a large cost difference but it sounds like they can be used in similar ways. ~ In my response, I reference the Earthpulse and Greenwave filters. Colin asks @ 00:49:04 Looking for supplements that will help with muscle spasms. He's been having trouble running downhill. His leg gets a sharp twinge in his vastus laterus/medialus and rectus femerus. If he limps for half a kilometre or so he is able to start shuffling again but he has to be very careful or the spasm will come back. ~ In my response to Colin, I mention: Transdermal magnesium, Trace minerals, Rumble Roller. Fred asks @ 00:56:52 He has been doing the Beach Body Insanity workouts and is wondering when they say to "engage your core" and "use those abs" what does that really mean? The people in the video seem to be sucking their guts way in but he is concerned that will impeded proper deep breathing. Do you have any guidance on how to "engage your abs" correctly. ~ In my response, I refer to the article How To Breathe The Right Way. Gabriel says @ 01:04:16 First he reminds us to wash our hands well after applying topical magnesium - especially before you touch your sore nipples. Second, he has flat feet and the running stores always recommend very heavy shoes with a lot of support but those shoes hurt his knees. He finds he runs best in very light shoes. What would you recommend for flat feet? ~ In my response to Gabriel, I mention www.skorarunning.com and How Start Running Barefoot. Matt asks @ 01:13:54 He has a lot of questions about protein: What are your thoughts on the use of soy protein in Hammer Nutrition's Perpetum (used instead of whey to avoid the overproduction of ammonia), during long endurance events what do you recommend that is both a good carb source mixed with a good protein source (UCAN Superstarch mixed with secondary protein?), also how much protein per hour do you recommend for a longer race (like an Ironman)? ~ In my response to Matt, I recommend the Master Amino Pattern. Kamil says @ 00:24:55 He read The China Study and is confused about whether he should stop eating meat or not. ~ In my response I mention this Raw Food SOS article. Bill asks @ 00:37:22 Why is Greek yogurt better than regular yogurt? Is it made with different milk? If not, wouldn't it cause the same intestinal leakage, gastric distress and inflammation? ~ In my response, I mention Episode #212 What Kind Of Yogurt Is Best? Steve asks @ 00:47:34 He drummed for 121 hour straight (breaking a Guinness World Record) to raise money for cancer research. During the session he subluxated 4 ribs and had a seizure (around hour 116) when his core temp plummeted. It is a year later and he still has fatigue and strange symptoms (he can't get his heart rate over 120 on the bike), can you help him figure out why and what he should do about it? ~ In my response, I recommend Tian Chi and trace minerals. JD says @ 01:00:00 During a recent surgery, while making an incision in his back, his right lower thoracic nerve was cut. He is now in a great deal of pain everyday. He'd like to know if there is any other treatment for it, other than the neurontinhe has been prescribed. ~ In my recommendation for pain management to JD, I recommend: A whole food antioxidant that includes vitamin B, D, E and wild plant derivatives, such as LifeShotz. High omega 3 fatty acids and GLA intake, including borage oil, Natural painkillers from something like phenocane, High magnesium intake, A zinc supplement, and Glutathione.
