Ep 92Trading a catcher, checking in on former Blue Jays in Oakland, and more!

The Blue Jays dropped their five-game series with the Rays and now they're off to the West Coast to play Oakland and Seattle. In this episode of BJN Radio, we took a look back at the Rays series, which started off with a great Yusei Kikuchi performance and finished with depth arms throwing batting practice. We then dove into a couple of rumours, as the Blue Jays are reportedly one of the teams in the mix for Kansas City's Andrew Benintendi while the Tigers are reportedly interested in Danny Jansen. Finally, we looked ahead to the series in Oakland against the A's, who are in last place in baseball, and we took a look at how the players who were traded for Matt Chapman back in March are doing. Ep 91Gearing up for a long weekend with the Tampa Bay Rays!

The Blue Jays nearly pulled off a sweep of the Boston Red Sox this week but some bullpen struggles resulted in a loss in the finale.Pitching will be important this weekend as the Blue Jays are set to host the Tampa Bay Rays for five games. Tampa is a game-and-a-half behind Toronto in the standings and are rolling into town limping through injuries. On this episode of BJN Radio, we talked about the good and the bad from the Boston series and looked ahead to the five-gamer with the Rays. Ep 90What should the Blue Jays do about their starting pitching woes?

The Blue Jays' starting pitching has become a problem. After Alek Manoah cruised to a win on Friday night, Yusei Kikuchi and Jose Berrios were only able to go two innings each on Saturday and Sunday as the Blue Jays dropped two of three in Milwaukee. On this episode of BJN Radio, we talked about Charlie Montoyo's comments about Kikuchi's performance, whether it might be time to give somebody else a look, and whether the front office should look to acquire a starting pitcher. We then looked ahead at an incredibly important eight-game stretch against the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays this week. Ep 89The Blue Jays need bullpen help, Yankees fans are mad about All-Star voting, and more!

The Blue Jays are in a bit of a skid as they split a four-game series with the Orioles, got dropped by the Yankees, and then lost two of three to the White Sox. In this episode of BJN Radio, we recapped the series with the White Sox and talked about how the Blue Jays are badly in need of some bullpen help. We also looked at the American League All-Star vote and why it's making Yankees fans so upset. After that, we looked ahead to the upcoming series with the Milwaukee Brewers and took a look back at the Rowdy Tellez trade that happened just over one year ago. Ep 86A feel-good win against the mighty Yankees, searching for bullpen help, and more!

It's amazing how quickly things can change in baseball. That really looked like it was going to be a completely miserable weekend as the Yankees were on their way to a three-game sweep in Toronto, but a grand slam and a three-run bomb completely changed everything.Rather than rolling into a road trip having been swept by a team that looks uncatchable in the standings, the Blue Jays now get to roll with the swagger of a team that pulled off the biggest comeback against the Yankees this season. We talked about the good vibes that came from Sunday's game and also touched on the unfortunate reality that the Yankees are incredibly good. We also looked at Jim Bowden's 125-player Trade Bait Board from The Athletic and speculated which arms could help the starting rotation and the bullpen. Finally, we took a look ahead to the upcoming series against the White Sox, a team the Blue Jays swept earlier this season. Ep 85The Trash Birds, an ode to Hyun Jin Ryu, Shohei Ohtani speculation, and more!

That's absolutely not how you'd like for a series with the Baltimore Orioles to go.We had this week circled on the calendar for quite some time as the Trash Birds came to town for the first time this season but the Orioles put up a good fight and wound up taking two of four. Next up, we have the New York Yankees, who are on pace to win 121 games this season. Fun stuff! On this episode of BJN Radio, we talked about Hyun Jin Ryu's career as a Blue Jay possibly being over, who the team could look to acquire before the trade deadline, and whether a Shohei Ohtani trade is possible. Ep 84Gabriel Moreno's debut, praise for Ross Stripling, and more!

The Blue Jays' quest through the Central Division has come to an end. With a two-of-three series win in Detroit, the Blue Jays went 8-5 against the White Sox, Twins, Royals, and Tigers. We talked about Gabriel Moreno's big league debut and how a three-man catcher tandem might work if he plays too well to be sent down. We also talked about the excellent pitching the team has been getting from Ross Stripling while Hyun Jin Ryu is injured. After that, we looked ahead to the first meeting of the season with the Trash Birds, who, unfortunately, are better this year than they have been in recent years. Ep 83How the Royals have fallen off a cliff since 2015, when we can expect Gabriel Moreno, and more!

That looked like it was going to be an all-time spanking but then, since it's Kansas City, things went a little goofy. The Blue Jays won their first two games of the series by scores of 8-0 and 7-0 and then came out with a chance to sweep and laid an egg. Yusei Kikuchi got rocked and couldn't get out of the first inning and the bullpen has a tough time with the mess. Two out of three ain't bad but it's hard to be all too thrilled with anything less than a sweep of arguably the worst team in baseball. With Tyler away, me and BK talked about the Royals series and how they've fallen off a cliff since 2015. That led us into a random tangent about prospects that were traded away and a 2019 draft do-over. We also talked about when Gabriel Moreno will get called up and if we might see him join the team in Detroit. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 83Jose Berrios' gem, the return of The Juiced Ball, Alejandro Kirk for the All-Star Game, and more!

The Blue Jays' eight-game winning streak came to an end this weekend as the Minnesota Twins rolled into town and took two of three. We talked about Kevin Gausman tipping his pitches, what Jose Berrios did differently in his gem, and some issues with the non-leverage guys in the bullpen. We also took a look at an interesting thread that indicates that the juiced ball might be back, which would help explain why the pitching has started to get a bit more rocky right as the bats have woken up. Also, with All-Star Game voting right around the corner, we took a look at who could represent the Blue Jays at Dodger Stadium. We campaigned for Alejandro Kirk, who's cementing himself as one of the best catchers in baseball. Finally, we took a look ahead at the upcoming three-game series in Kansas City, a place with terrible vibes. Ep 81Let's go streaking!

The Blue Jays are on an eight-game winning streak! After winning four in Anaheim, the Blue Jays returned to Toronto and took three of three from the struggling Chicago White Sox. Next up, another struggling team, the Minnesota Twins, and some more junk from the Central Division. We recapped the series with the Sox and talked about how much more entertaining it is to watch this version of the team that can hit everything as opposed to the previous version of the team that couldn't hit at all. We also agreed that we'd take an early 2015/2021 style team that scores runs and blows leads over the limp bat team that can pitch. After that, we took a look ahead to the upcoming series with the Twins, who are coming into Toronto shorthanded as four players are on the Restricted List and a few other key names are on the Injured List. Ep 80Ep. 80: A four-game sweep? On the West Coast?!?

What a ride. The Blue Jays traveled out west and brought their bats with them, as they scored 27 runs over the course of a four-game sweep over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In this episode of BJN Radio, we took a look through that rollercoaster of a series in which the Blue Jays started to look a lot like the 2021 Blue Jays, a team that'll blow a lead but then grab it right back. We talked about the batters that are heating up, the team's great problem behind the plate, and some stellar performances out of the bullpen. We also talked about Jose Berrios' difficult outing and some unnecessary hate that's been thrown at Charlie Montoyo. Finally, we looked ahead to the upcoming series with the Chicago White Sox, a team with high expectations that hasn't yet found its groove. Hosted on Acast. Ep 79Ep. 79: Charlie's blunder, the arrival of the bats, a prospect update, and more!

The bats! They've arrived, it seems! After a wildly frustrating loss on Monday in St. Louis, the Blue Jays' bats finally exploded the following day with an eight-run showing against the Cardinals. We talked about Charlie Montoyo's odd bullpen decision from the loss, and also the excellent starts from Jose Berrios and Kevin Gausman. We also looked into why the offense was so much better in this series than it has been over the past few weeks. After that, we took a look at how some prospects are doing down in Triple-A and who might be able to help the Blue Jays in the coming weeks. Finally, we took a look ahead at the weekend series with the Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheim in Los Angeles. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 78Ep. 78: The 2016 team comparison, Joey Votto's successful finale in Toronto, and more!

It was another series win that left a sour aftertaste. As they did with Seattle, the Blue Jays took the first two games against a weak opponent and then came up short with a chance to pull off a sweep. In the post-Reds series episode of BJN Radio, we gave praise to Hyun Hin Ryu for another good start, questioned whether it was right for Charlie Montoyo to not give Alek Manoah the ninth inning, and looked at Bo Bichette's low-key hot streak in the month of May. We also talked about the handful of guys who aren't hitting and wondered how long such cold streaks can possibly continue. We also talked about Joey Votto playing likely his last game in Toronto, barring a trade, and talked about whether we root for Canadian players when they go up against the Blue Jays. Hosted on Acast. Ep 77Ep. 77: Blue Jays beat Mariners despite quiet bats, digging into the Juan Soto stuff, and more!

The Blue Jays have finally won their first series of the month of May! Despite taking two of three from the scuffling Seattle Mariners, this series felt a little limp because the bats went completely silent on Wednesday when the Blue Jays had a chance to sweep. We talked about the good stuff from the Seattle series, such as Yusei Kikuchi clowning his old team and Jose Berrios weaving through seven scoreless frames, and also the bad stuff, such as the worrying injury to Tim Mayza and the fact the bats are still in January. We also talked about the speculation from Buster Olney that Juan Soto could be moved and whether that makes any sense at all. Finally, we looked ahead to a series against the Cincinnati Reds who feature a handful of Blue Jays' castoffs. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 76Ep. 76: The bats remained silent at The Trop, let's hope they wake up for the Mariners

As you'd expect, facing the Rays at The Trop wasn't the remedy that the Blue Jays needed. Toronto dropped two of three in Tampa as the bats yet again remained completely silent. They've now dropped four series in a row since the end of April and have an 18-17 record on the season. We recapped the series against Tampa and talked about George Springer bashing into the outfield ball, Matt Chapman's struggles at the plate and with the glove, and the fact that the team's approach at the plate seems completely lost. We also looked at some positives from the series, such as Hyun Jin Ryu and Danny Jansen doing well in their returns. After that, we looked ahead at the upcoming series against the Seattle Mariners, which won't feature old friend Robbie Ray. The Mariners have also been ice cold over the past few weeks, so hopefully, this can be the beginning of a turnaround for the Blue Jays. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 75Ep. 75: Ranting about the umps, ranting about the bats, ranting about Yankee Stadium, and more!

Take me back to April! May has been awful!!! After not dropping a single series in April, the Blue Jays have now dropped back-to-back-to-back series in May, as they were swept in a little two-game set in New York. In this episode of BJN Radio, we talked about the Bad Times In The Bronx, including Yimi Garcia inexplicably getting tossed after plunking Josh Donaldson in the first game, Jordan Romano's implosion in the ninth, and the overarching struggles of the bats to come up with clutch hits. We also fielded comments from the audience in which listeners sent us their biggest reasons for concern about this team and we replied with whether or not we're also worried about said things. In order to not be entirely doom and gloom, we talked about some good stuff, such as Bo Bichette possibly heating up at the plate and, randomly, Kevin Gausman being great. Finally, we looked ahead to the series in Tampa Bay, the last place a struggling team wants to be. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 74Ep. 74: Looking at the 2022 Blue Jays after one month

It's been one month and the Blue Jays own a 17-13 record. Though that seems a little limp because of how they've been playing lately, when you consider the strength of schedule they've had, it's a pretty solid start. In this episode of BJN Radio, we did three up, three down for the first month of play. Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah have both been aces thus far, the bullpen has helped the team steal a handful of games, and Santiago Espinal looks like a legit player. On the flip side, the bats have been much worse than expected as multiple players are ice cold at the same time and Jose Berrios has some worrying underlying numbers early on. We then looked ahead at a very important stretch the Blue Jays have coming up, as they head to New York for two against the Yankees and then they go down to The Trop for three with the Rays. Ep 73Ep. 73: Yusei Kikuchi's best start as a Blue Jay salvages a difficult series against the Yankees

For the first time all season, the Blue Jays have lost a series. The Yankees rolled into town on a nine-game heater and proved, well, why they're on a nine-game heater. New York took the first two games of the series with ridiculously effective pitching and some clutch hitting and then the Blue Jays edged out a win in the finale to save themselves from the sweep. Me and BK talked about why the bats are struggling, whether or not adding Teoscar Hernandez will be the shot of life the bats need, and what Yusei Kikuchi did differently in the best start of his season. We also talked about the possibility of Josh Bell becoming a Blue Jay and looked ahead to the four-game series coming up in Cleveland. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 72Ep. 72: Picking the Blue Jays' MVP for April, taking a look around the American League East, and more!

That was certainly a much better April than the one we saw last year. The Blue Jays are 15-8 after their first month (though it was an abbreviated one) and they've managed to have all of this success despite some key injuries and the bats not being at their best. We took a look at the series win over the Houston Astros and talked about George Springer dominating his former team, Kevin Gausman's continued brilliance, and some optimism that Bo Bichette might soon turn a corner. After that, we talked about who Toronto's Most Valuable Player has been early on and then took a spin around the American League East and looked at how baseball's deepest division is doing so far. Finally, we previewed the upcoming series against the Yankees, who are riding a nine-game winning streak. While the Yankees are undoubtedly a good team, a lot of their success has come against weak opponents, so this series in Toronto will be a test for them. Hosted on Acast. Ep 71Ep. 71: Another series win against the Red Sox, praise for The Big Man, and more!

The Blue Jays just continue to win games! They won the first game of the series thanks to a Bo Bichette grand slam, an epic comeback highlighted by a George Springer Dinger highlighted the second game, and then, after getting spanked in the third game, Alek Manoah came out and tossed seven scoreless en route to a 1-0 victory. The bats might not be rolling just yet but the pitching certainly is! We talked on this episode of BJN Radio about the excellence of The Big Man, Alek Manoah, and how he's exceeded anybody's wildest expectations early in his career. We also talked about Gausman's insane start to his season, as he still hasn't walked a guy through his first four outings. We also talked about the struggling offence, if there's any reason to panic, and how the ball seems to be different this year than in previous years. Finally, we looked ahead to another series with the Houston Astros this weekend, in which we avoid the possibility of a third Justin Verlander no-hitter in Toronto. Hosted on Acast. Ep 70Ep. 70: Blue Jays down Astros, getting on the Zack Collins hype train, Jordan Romano's workload, and more!

Another series, another win for the Blue Jays. To be honest, it really felt like this was a win-one-and-get-out operation, but the Blue Jays rolled into Houston and took two of three from the Astros, an impressive result given the difficulties they've had facing this team in the past. We recapped all of the good and bad stuff from the series in Houston and then looked ahead to the four-gamer back in Toronto against the Boston Red Sox. We also talked about the possibility that Zack Collins is legit, the struggles of Cavan Biggio and what to do with him, Jordan Romano's save streak coming to an end, and a whole bunch more. Ep 69Ep. 69: What a nice time! Kevin Gausman's masterclass, offence from the depth guys, and more!

It's a shame this episode didn't come one day earlier. The Blue Jays rolled into Boston this week and took two of three from the Red Sox, a big win considering this was a team that Toronto struggled with last season. Things started off poorly as an error from Bo Bichette late in the first game ultimately helped the Red Sox win a game in which Toronto's bats were completely limp. In the second game, the offence woke up thanks to some contributions from some unexpected sources. Finally, the third game featured a Kevin Gausman masterclass that nearly came unraveled in the ninth. We talked about all of the good stuff from this nice series and then looked ahead to the next series in Houston with the Astros. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 68Ep. 68: Vladdy and 60 homers, Ryu lands on the Injured List, complaining about umpires, and more!

It's been a bit of a strange ride early on, but the Blue Jays are in sole possession of first place in the American League East after 10 games. Can't complain about that! We talked about the good stuff from the Oakland series, such as Zack Collins coming out of nowhere with a hot streak and Alek Manoah putting together another great start, and also the bad stuff, like Hyun Jin Ryu getting clobbered and landing on the Injured List. We also took a look at some of the terrible umpiring that the Blue Jays have dealt with this season and whether or not it's a valid excuse for their ho-hum start to the season at the plate. Finally, we looked ahead to the upcoming series in Boston against the Red Sox, a team who, like the Jays, have been a little all over the grid this season. We also looked at betting odds for the Cy Young and MVP and talked about whether Vladdy smacking 60 homers this season is feasible. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 67Ep. 67: A split in New York, Teoscar gets injured, call up Moreno, and more!

It's only April but that felt like September. The Blue Jays and Yankees both took two games in an intense, back-and-forth series in The Bronx. With Tyler away on vacation, I was joined by Paul Berthelot to talk about all of the good and bad from the Yankees series. We talked about Vladdy's three-homer game, George Springer shutting up the boos, and Alek Manoah's ace start, along with the struggles offensively from the non-Vladdy/Springer players in the lineup. After that, we went through what we've seen from starting rotation and discussed what we've liked so far and what we're worried about. We also talked about the injuries to Danny Jansen and Teoscar Hernandez and whether or not calling up Gabriel Moreno is The Answer. Finally, we looked ahead to this weekend's series against the Oakland A's, who just took three of four from the Tampa Bay Rays. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 66Ep. 66: What an Opening Weekend!

Blue Jays baseball returned to Toronto with a bang. In their first normal Home Opener in three years, the Blue Jays put on an insane show, coming back from 7-0 down to pull off a 10-8 win. They picked up another win on Saturday and then appeared they were on their way to a sweep before the pitching imploded for 11 unanswered runs. We talked about the wild ride that was Opening Weekend, the comeback and the electricity of the biggest crowd the Dome has seen in years, the clutch performances of the bullpen, the difficult times the starting pitchers had and whether it means anything or not, and, of course, the huge bats. After that, we looked around the American League and talked about what the other teams got up to before looking ahead to an important series against the Yankees in New York. Remember, we can't say It's Early anymore, not after last year. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 65Ep. 65: The Good Vibes Only 2022 Season Preview

Opening Day is tomorrow!!! We kicked off this 2022 season preview episode by talking about all of the scuttlebutt surrounding the Blue Jays as spring training comes to an end and the team travels north, such as Nate Pearson dealing with mono, Greg Bird leaving his minor-league deal to return to the Yankees, and Jose Ramirez signing an extension to stick around in Cleveland. After that, we went division by division and looked at the competition. Much like last year, Toronto's biggest challenge is going to come from within the American League East, while the Wild-Card race is going to be wide open. Are the White Sox and Astros are going to cruise to their divisions? Can the Tigers and Mariners give them trouble? Are the Red Sox going to be weirdly good again? Can the Yankees stay healthy? Finally, we went on twitter and asked people to give us their bold predictions for the year and we ranked their believability on a scale of 1-10. We then made our own bold predictions for the year and fought about who was the most optimistic. Good vibes only!!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 64Ep. 64: Spring Training Thoughts and Baggedmilks Introduction to BJN

We're just over a week away from Opening Day and spring training is starting to really feel like a slog. The thing with the Blue Jays this year is that there aren't really all that many interesting roster battles, as the majority of the team's roster has already been sorted out and the only things to pay attention to are what relievers are going to travel north with the team come April. Regardless, we talked about the worthwhile things from Grapefruit play, including Greg Bird earning himself a roster spot, Orelvis Martinez putting himself on the map with his amazing performance at the dish, and Randal Grichuk getting traded to the Colorado Rockies for Raimel Tapia. We also welcomed a new friend (well, a familiar voice if you're one of our Western Canadian listeners) named BaggedMilk to the show to talk about why he started to fall in love with the Blue Jays last summer and what he's looking forward to this season. Ep 63Ep. 63: Matt Chapman is a Blue Jay!!!

This has certainly been a fun few days! Though it took a little while, the flurry of transactions following the new Collective Bargaining Agreement has finally arrived. The Blue Jays rounded out their starting rotation on Saturday, signing Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year deal. Then, on Wednesday, they made a big splash by trading for three-time Gold Glover winner Matt Chapman. So, all told, Robbie Ray, Marcus Semien, and Steven Matz are out, and Kevin Gausman, Chapman, and Kikuchi are in. We talked about the Chapman trade, which is hilariously similar to the Josh Donaldson one a few years ago, and what he'll bring to the team. We also looked at what might be next for the Blue Jays as the team is still in need of a left-handed bat and Jose Ramirez apparently remains a possibility. Hosted on Acast. Ep 62Ep. 62: Digging into the new CBA, gearing up for transaction season, and more!

Baseball! It's back! The last time we recorded, it was all doom and gloom about how this stalemate between Major League Baseball and the Players' Association was going to drag on and on and on for months and the thought of a full 2022 season seemed hopeless. Well, here we are now. A new Collective Bargaining Agreement has been reached and we're going to have a normal, 162-game season. We went through the changes from the CBA and what it all means for the Blue Jays, ranging from the baseball stuff, like the 12-team playoff format, all the way to the economic stuff, like the possible International Draft. We also dug into some early Off-Season 2.0 rumours, as the Blue Jays are apparently in the mix to make a big splash before the start of the season. My goodness, it feels nice to talk about actual rumours! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 61Ep. 61: The "Deadline" has passed!

Baseball, it's designed to break your heart! Just like watching a late-game blown lead, the negotiation sessions between Major League Baseball and the Players' Association broke our hearts, as there was momentum towards a deal until there wasn't. Rob Manfred announced that Opening Day on March 31 has been canceled along with the first week of the 2022 MLB season. It shouldn't really come as much of a surprise, but, still, seeing the news become official was depressing. We talked about Monday and Tuesday's negotiations, the key issues that separate the two sides, the game being played by the owners, and how the players are going to respond. We also looked at how the lockout affects the Blue Jays specifically, as this will very likely be the third consecutive year that the team has lost home dates right as their contention window is opening up. Ep 60Ep. 60: Flaws with the Hall of Fame, movement in negotiations, teeth, and more!

We're getting closer and closer to the start of Spring Training and there's still no Collective Bargaining Agreement. Fortunately, there's been some positive news lately that MLB and the Players' Association are slowly inching towards maybe possibly agreeing on something. BK and I talked in this lockout edition of BJN Radio about what's happening in the negotiations and what changes we can realistically expect when a deal is reached. We also talked about the 2022 Hall of Fame class and our issues with Cooperstown. Finally, we went into some Random Blue Jays Talk, in which we looked back at a hilariously bad lineup from 2019, Kevin Gausman not getting a contract offer from the Giants, and why the Blue Jays couldn't hit in the late innings. We also fielded some questions, including one about teeth. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 59Ep. 59: How are the owners and players going to find a middle ground?

We're stuck in the dog days of winter without any good news. Major League Baseball and the Players' Association haven't met since the lockout started at the beginning of December and it doesn't appear as though they have any plans to do so in the coming days. The Blue Jays have told their players not to rush to make accommodation plans for spring training in Florida, so it's safe to assume there won't be a resolution to this battle anytime soon. For our first podcast of 2022, we took a look at how the owners and the players could find a middle ground on the major labour issues that have led to this lockout. We looked into free agency, control years, the playoff format, and even into the wet and wild world of relegation! We then tried to get some positive vibes in the mix by looking back at our favourite moments from 2021. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 58Ep. 58: The Minor League Grind with Cleveland prospect Erik Sabrowski

Major League Baseball and the Players' Association are still nowhere near a Collective Bargaining Agreement so there isn't much to for us talk about. We took a look back at some points of interest from the month of December, which, most notably, boiled down to a discussion about Pete Walker potentially leaving Toronto for a managerial gig with the New York Mets. We also looked at some free agent fits lists that came out over the past week and what the Blue Jays might do once the lockout ends. After that, we welcomed Cleveland Guardians prospect, first-round Minor League Rule 5 Draft Pick, and Good Edmonton Boy Erik Sabrowski to the show to talk about getting drafted, life in the minors, and a whole bunch more! Ep 57Ep. 47: Breaking down what happened before MLB's lockout and what's going to happen next

That was a fun off-season while it lasted! Now we get to stare into the void for the next few weeks (or months) as the owners and players slowly figure out a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. In this episode of Blue Jays Nation Radio, we talked about Steven Matz, Robbie Ray, and Marcus Semien signing elsewhere and who the Blue Jays might bring in to replace them. Ray has already been swapped out for Kevin Gausman, but the team is going to need to find another back-end starter and an impact position player. We dug into the rumours around Kris Bryant, Freddie Freeman, and more. After that, we talked about the work stoppage and what to expect from the lockout. This has been boiling for years so things are going to get ugly. Players want to reach free agency sooner and owners believe that free agency is what makes the league only competitive to a small handful of rich teams. Buckle up. Hosted on Acast. Ep 56Ep. 56: Talking about José Berríos' contract extension

José Berríos is going to be a Blue Jay for a long time. Word came out on Tuesday that the right-hander had inked a seven-year contract extension with the Blue Jays worth $131 million. It's the biggest contract for a pitcher in Blue Jays history and is the second-largest contract ever handed out by the club, behind only George Springer's deal from last winter. We had an emergency podcast to discuss Berríos' new contract, why it's a win for the Blue Jays, and what we can expect next. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 55Ep. 55: Free agent predictions and the ideal off-season for the Blue Jays

This is the most important off-season for the Blue Jays in a long time. The team enjoyed a breakout 91-win season in 2021, but it wasn't enough to get them into the playoffs. Two key members of the team, Robbie Ray and Marcus Semien, are free agents and the Blue Jays will need to either bring them back or replace them. On this episode of BJN Radio, me and BK took a look at this winter's free-agent market and made some predictions as to where players are going to end up. We talked about Corey Seager being the team's ideal fit and whether that's realistic, starting pitchers who might be safer bets than Ray, and some under-the-radar names such as Kyle Schwarber and Collin McHugh who could plug some major holes that existed on the roster last season. We also went ahead and talked about what our ideal off-season would look like, through the lens of spending big dollars on either an impact bat or starting pitching. Hosted on Acast. Ep 54Ep. 54: Alex Anthopoulos discourse, Collective Bargaining Agreement talk, and more!

It's finally off-season time! Unfortunately, since the Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire in December, this is more than likely going to be a looooooooong winter without any major transactions until later on. We talked about the CBA negotiations, what both sides are looking for, who's more likely to cave, and what it could mean for the Blue Jays. We also talked about Alex Anthopolous, who became the first Canadian general manager to win the World Series, and why it's perfectly OK to be happy for him while also being happy with where the Blue Jays are at with their current front office. Ep 53Ep. 53: Talking 2022 budget, Ray and Semien both moving on, and more!

We're back! After a two-week hiatus of pretending that the Major League Baseball post-season isn't happening, we returned to talk about the Blue Jays very, very, very important off-season that's on the horizon. Mark Shapiro did an end-of-season media availability earlier this week and talked about the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the investment that we should expect from ownership moving forward, and a whole bunch of other front office-y things. Also, Dan Shulman appeared on Baseball Tonight podcast with Buster Olney and said that he predicts both Robbie Ray and Marcus Semien will leave the team in free agency. We went over Shapiro's talk, Shulman's prediction, and talked about how the Blue Jays might look when 2022 rolls around. Jose Ramirez? Noah Syndergaard? Who knows! Hosted on Acast. Ep 52Ep. 52: The 2021 Blue Jays Eulogy

Coom, Tyler, and BK sat down and each came up with our own 'three up, three down' from this year as a way to look back on all of the good, bad, and everything in between from the 2021 Blue Jays season. We talked about the good stuff, like Vladdy's breakout season, the value of Marcus Semien and Robbie Ray's one-year contracts, Alek Manoah becoming The Big Man out of the blue, the home run jacket being insanely cool, and the amazing homecoming to Toronto in July. We also talked about the bad stuff, like the chaos that was the early-season bullpen, the ugly losses that ultimately cost the Blue Jays a playoff spot, Hyun Jin Ryu's struggles, George Springer's injuries, and the current MLB schedule and post-season format. Ep 51Ep. 51: Post-Heartbreak Therapy Session

It's all over. The Blue Jays did what they could this weekend, pulling off a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in front of a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as both the Yankees and Red Sox won their games on Sunday and punched their respective tickets to the American League Wild Card game. Here we are now, left to think about all that could have been. We took a look back at the final series of the year and talked about all of the great things we saw from the bats and the starting pitchers against the Trash Birds and then we ranted about the Expos, new and old, being totally useless. We also looked ahead to the off-season and talked about the major storylines we'll be talking about over the next few months. We realized at the end of the show that this whole process of talking about how special the 2021 Blue Jays were was not very therapeutic at all and it ultimately just made us more frustrated and heartbroken that the season is over. Ep 50Ep. 50: Welcome to Heartbreak

That wasn't the storybook finish we were hoping for. The Yankees rolled into Toronto for what was a playoff-like series at The Dome. Capacity was upped to 30,000 and the Blue Jays had a chance to catch the Yankees in the standings and ultimately put themselves in a position to earn a playoff spot. The table was set. Unfortunately, it was the Yankees who showed up to play while the Blue Jays didn't bring their best. The bats were silenced in the first game on Tuesday, Bo Bichette led the team to a win on Wednesday, and then, with a chance to pull within one game of New York on Thursday, Robbie Ray got lit up in the sixth inning and Toronto's bats couldn't solve the Yankees' bullpen the rest of the way. It was a heartbreaker, a gut-punch, and an energy-sucking loss. We talked about a bunch of stuff on this episode of BJN Radio, including Bo's amazing series, Nate Pearson having some good outings out of the 'pen, and the decision by Charlie Montoyo to keep Ray in the game when it looked like the Yankees had him solved. We also looked ahead to the final series with Baltimore and what it'll take for Toronto to leap over the Red Sox and the Mariners. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 49Ep. 49: There's no room left for error

This weekend didn't go as planned. The Blue Jays managed a split against the Minnesota Twins while the Yankees rolled into Boston and pulled off a sweep. Toronto is now a game behind Boston for the second wild-card spot while the Yankees are a game up on the Red Sox for the top seed. We talked about the series, going through the downs, such as Lourdes Gurriel's injury and the team's lack of clutch hitting, and then the ups, like Alek Manoah's huge start on Sunday and George Springer busting out of his slump upon his return to the outfield. We also looked ahead to the final week of the season, which will feature a must-win series between the Blue Jays and Yankees in Toronto. This is the first time the Yankees will be in Toronto in two years and the Blue Jays are opening capacity to 30,000 fans. There's a perfect opportunity for a storybook ending here. Hosted on Acast. Ep 48Ep. 48: The Trop Sucks & That Series Didn't Go Well

We are back with another episode of BJN Radio to recap the Blue Jays tough three-game series at Tropicana Field. Things did not go well. A questionable, if not terrible, strike zone cost them in game one and while they were able to squeak out a win in game two thanks to a gutsy performance from 'The Big Man' Alek Manoah, they couldn't get the win in the rubber match. Ross Stripling was terrible, there was drama surrounding Kevin Keirmaier and a dropped piece of paper, and it was just all around a bad time at The Trop, which it usually is. Cam & Tyler recapped the series, look at the wild card standings, and got set for a massive four-game series against the Twins today on the pod. Hosted on Acast. Ep 47Ep. 47: Hyun Jin Ryu's struggles, Gerrit Cole's spaz, Josh Donaldson's ovation, and more!

Another series, another couple of wins for the Blue Jays! That's the way it's been for the past month-and-a-bit and the hope is that it continues as the Blue Jays head to The House of Horrors. The Blue Jays got the job done this weekend, taking two of three from the lowly Minnesota Twins. Things started off ugly as Hyun Jin Ryu got knocked around on Friday but Steven Matz and Jose Berrios led the team to back-to-back wins on Saturday and Sunday, so all ended well. We talked about Ryu's struggles, the "injury" that landed him on the 10-day Injured List, and what to expect from him moving forward. We also talked about Matz's excellent run and what it means for him in the off-season. Finally, we talked about the Blue Jays lineup and why it needs to involve Alejandro Kirk more often than not. We then took a look at the out-of-town scoreboard and gave a hat tip to Cleveland, who did us a solid by beating the Yankees on Saturday and Sunday. We finished off by talking about the series ahead against the Rays at The Trop, a place that's never fun to visit. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S1 Ep 46A statement against the Rays, Charlie Discourse, and more!

The good times keep rolling! After sweeping Oakland and New York and then scoring 1000 runs over Baltimore in a four-game set, the Blue Jays returned home to face a big test — the American League-leading Tampa Bay Rays. And it went really well, as the Blue Jays took two of three in the series, including a commanding win on Monday night. I was joined by our good pal BK to take about the series, which featured amazingly good starting pitching, the slaying of the Ryan Yarborough Dragon, and some positive vibes when it came to George Springer's health. We also dove into some Charlie Discourse, as Montoyo made a puzzling decision on Tuesday night late in the game that pissed a lot of people off. Is Charlie Montoyo the guy who's going to lead this team to glory? I mean, he's got a good chance of winning Manager of the Year, right? Finally, we looked ahead to the upcoming series against the Minnesota Twins! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 45Ep. 45: A record-setting weekend in Baltimore!

That was certainly a trip. Things looked really ugly on Friday when the lowly Baltimore Trash Birds ended the Blue Jays' eight-game winning streak despite Robbie Ray being on the mound, but, after that, things got very, very good. The Blue Jays pulled off back-to-back last-second comeback wins in their doubleheader on Saturday, with George Springer and Bo Bichette hitting clutch homers to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. And then, finally, on Sunday, the bats popped off for 22 runs, coming very close to setting a franchise record. We talked about this whole wild weekend, ranging from the few ugly starts that Toronto's pitchers had, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde spazzing out at Robbie Ray, the speculation about sign stealing, all the way to the wild records that Toronto set this weekend. Finally, we took a look ahead at the upcoming series against Tampa Bay and we looked at what Boston and New York have on tap. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ep 44Ep. 44: The brooms come out in The Bronx!

They did it! The Jays swept away the New York Yankees in convincing fashion and they now sit just outside of a Wild Card. It's the first time since 2015 that the Blue Jays have won eight games in a row and really, it feels a lot like 2015 right now. Everything is breaking their way. They're getting clutch starts, huge outings from different relievers, and cutch at-bats from stars and from depth players. Nothing is going wrong right now. Cam was joined by Yankees writer Neil Keefe on the pod as well to recap the series and get a Yankees fans perspective on how the last week has gone. There are now just 23 games left in the season and if the Jays win the games in hand that they have, they'll be tied with both the Yankees and Red Sox. They essentially control their own fate in this playoff race. Up next for the Jays is a four-game set against the Baltimore Orioles, who are 45-94 so far this season. These are very winnable games. Ep 43Ep. 43: The Jays Swept The A's!!!

Happy long weekend Blue Jays fans and welcome to a brand new episode of BJN Radio with Tyler and Cam! Today on the pod, the guys broke down the incredible weekend of baseball that we saw from the team as they swept away the Oakland A's in thrilling fashion. They talked about the explosion of offense, the dominating start from Robbie Ray, and the fact that the team is right back in the thick of the AL Wild Card Race. They also hit on the report from Ken Rosenthal regarding potential new deals for Ray and Marcus Semien before getting set for a HUGE four-game series in the Bronx. Hosted on Acast. Ep 42Ep. 42: Just scraping by the Trash Birds

We are back after a short hiatus! The series against the Baltimore "Trash Bird" Orioles was one we've all had marked on our calendars for quite some time as three automatic wins. That didn't happen. Robbie Ray put up an amazing start and Vladdy hit two homers in the opener, but a sixth-inning meltdown from Hyun Jin Ryu and some limp bats resulted in a loss in the second game. Finally, in the third game, Toronto narrowly squeezed out a victory on what was probably the most 2021 Blue Jays play possible, a go-ahead fly-ball double play. Sexy stuff! We talked about the limp bats at the bottom of the order, what Nate Pearson can bring to the team, and we also looked ahead to the upcoming series against Oakland, which can ultimately sink or swim the season. S1 Ep 41Ups and downs with Chicago, the bag of cash on Robbie Ray's horizon, and more!

A 2-2 split against a good team is pretty good, but not exactly great when you're climbing the mountain the Blue Jays are. That was quite a week of ups and downs. Alek Manoah helped the team to a gritty win on Monday, Jose Berrios got shelled immediately after on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Robbie Ray threw one of the better starts we've seen from a Blue Jay in a while, on Thursday, Hyun Jin Ryu got knocked around. All told, two steps forward, two back. Anyways! BK joined the show and we distracted ourselves from the chase by taking a needlessly early look at the off-season, based on Ross Atkins' comments when talking with Bob McCown earlier this week. We went into some depth about Ray's season, what kind of contract he's going to earn, and whether the Blue Jays will open up their wallets to make it happen. Finally, we took a quick look at the easy schedule on the horizon. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
