In this week, episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor and counselor Jeff Christianson continues this study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit by looking at the topic of walking according to the Spirit. The secular vision of the human being cannot penetrate deep enough into the human heart to see the battle between the flesh and the Spirit. Paul explores this biblical anthropology in Romans 6–8. In this podcast, Jeff Christianson explores Paul's words in Romans 8:4, "In order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." We can recognize the works of the flesh by all the ways we are tempted to rely upon ourselves. Walking by ourselves looks like self-reliance, self-dependence, self-esteem, self-sufficiency–anything that reflects the "self-life." In order for us to experience the life of the Spirit, we must renounce everything that comes from the flesh in our hearts. Christian, what is the difference between the flesh and the Spirit in your own life? If you were honest with yourself, are there areas where you are allowing the flesh to have dominion within your heart that no one can see but God alone? Do you need to spend some time considering the thoughts, desires, and emotions within your heart to discern whether you are walking according to the flesh or the Spirit? Many ministries spend most of their energy on finding ways to motivate people toward change. Churches host brainstorming events on discipleship. Book publishers release the latest growth ideas or tools. Pastors preach sermons pointing their congregants down the path of growth. Many Christians can feel bombarded by the constant message: "Here is where you are. Here is where you need to be. Get after it!" While this message of transformation is necessary and biblical, we must ask whether these calls for change are missing a central ingredient. In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, Pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit by exposing a missing ingredient in the discipleship recipe of many churches, the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. In 2 Corinthians 3:18, Paul writes "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." This verse is all about transformation. Here, Paul keys his readers into a vital principle for transformation. Transformation occurs when we behold the glory of the Lord. Transformation first and foremost is a result of Christians looking at Jesus. Transformation begins not with behavior but beholding–meditating upon the glory of the Son of God, considering his humility in coming to save us, marveling at his sacrificial love on the cross, and rejoicing in the empty tomb. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that our transformation is tied to our grasp of the glory of the Lord. As we look to Jesus, believe the gospel, and understand his goodness towards us, we are slowly changed into his image. Want to hear more? There are three goals in soul care. Number one, every believer in Christ needs a word of counsel from God regularly. It's important to find His knowledge and wisdom in our lives especially if we are going to be instruments of His counsel for others. Number two, we ask God to equip us to counsel others His way. We all need to grow in this area because all Christians are called to give a word of counsel. Third, we want to notice the warnings about deceptive philosophies. The word of God has warnings that need to be heeded so we don't give bad counsel and will discern the difference when we receive counsel. Psalm 73:24 the psalmist confesses a great truth: "You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory." This is to be our confidence for time and eternity. Throughout time God will guide us with His counsel, if we let Him, if we look to Him, and if we trust Him to do so. And afterward, what will He do?
