As counselors, we need to increasingly rely on God's resources, not ours. 2 Corinthians 3:5 states: "Our sufficiency is from God." We are not sufficient of ourselves. Apart from Christ in us, we cannot produce what life demands or what God desires. This is humbling yet liberating. It's humbling to realize we lack what's essential for true living. Yet it's liberating to know God doesn't expect us to produce it ourselves. He freely provides all we need. Our role is simply to draw upon His unlimited resources by faith. "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God..." 2 Corinthians 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." In Chapter one of II Samuel we find David receiving word of the death of his dear friend Jonathan, and of King Saul, who he admired so greatly. In observing how David deals with his grief, there are some important lessons we can learn. Sooner or later every one of us will experience the grief and sorrow of having lost someone that we loved very dearly. I learned these lessons from Pastor Chuck Smith, who is now in heaven. BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you" (1 Peter 4:12). Problems and difficulties are built right into the Christian life. Christians undergoing them are apt to think it very bewildering and strange. "But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters..." "In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (I Peter 1:6-7). Testings, trials, and fiery ordeals come to prove the genuineness of our faith, demonstrating its reality. The fires of life, warfare, and circumstances test us, but if we walk through them God's way, we will bring praise, glory, and honor to the Lord. "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:2-4). "For the joy that was set before Him [Jesus] endured the cross…" (Hebrews 12:2). "But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:4). In II Corinthians 1:8-11, we get an insight into some of Paul's sufferings: "But we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead" (II Corinthians 1:8-9). "Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us" (II Corinthians 1:10). "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us" (II Corinthians 4:7). God has placed His Treasure in vulnerable earthen vessels ("Christ in you, the hope of glory": Colossians 1:27), so that the power that comes forth in our lives has to be of Him, and the glory goes to Him alone. "We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (II Corinthians 4:8-9).

Welcome to the Biblical Counseling Podcast! In today's episode, Pastor Jeff talks about the topic of God's resources, not our own, not our own abilities versus God's ability. Not that we're sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. And we know this dovetails really well with you who receive and give counsel. We need to rely on God's resources, we draw upon this in biblical theology, this is the basics, and it gets forgotten so often in the counseling ministry and just life in general, we can lean on our own abilities or intellect or personality or just education and things like that. And we want to more and more rely upon God's resources and not our own. God's sufficiency, not ours, is a powerful and humbling truth that is emphasized throughout the Bible. This means that we cannot depend solely on our own strength, wisdom, or resources to meet our needs and overcome our challenges. Instead, we must rely on God's goodness, faithfulness, and provision to sustain us and help us to accomplish His purposes. In 2 Corinthians 3:5, the Apostle Paul writes, "Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God." This verse reminds us that anything good that we accomplish or receive is not due to our own merit or power, but is a gift from God. We must recognize our own limitations and weaknesses, and put our trust in God who is infinitely capable and loving. This truth of God's sufficiency challenges us to let go of our pride, self-reliance, and fear, and to instead approach every situation with faith and dependence on Him. As we do so, we can experience the peace, joy, and power that come from knowing and serving a God who is more than enough to meet all of our needs.

Restoring The Fallen Brother Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (26) Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Verse one is about restoring the falling brother. The context for this verse, flowing right out of the previous two verses. Galatians 6:1 is a word to those who have found life in the Spirit and who are desiring therefore to walk each day by the Spirit. We are told here that such people will not treat others with prideful competition and jealousy. But rather they will want to help and assist one another. BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com

In this episode, Pastor Jeff talks about how psychology is infiltrating the church. Instead of the church impacting the world around us, the world is infecting the body of Christ. So often unbiblical, worldly messages are being brought into the church. The truths of Scripture are the message of the church and must not be mixed with humanistic philosophies. God's Word is powerful. The people of God need to hold fast to the Word of God and the Gospel, which is the power of God for salvation and a changed life. Let us not embrace what is popular, but come back to the Word of God. Jeff often talks about the difference between psychology and the Bible. But just to clarify, when he mentions psychology, he isn't referring to the entire field of psychology. He is mainly pushing back about the part of psychology that deals with human nature, how to live life, and how to make changes. This includes things like psychological counseling, clinical counseling, psychotherapy, and the psychological aspects of psychiatry. These theories have also influenced some parts of educational psychology, especially behaviorism and humanism. But the problem is that these theories focus on nonphysical aspects of a person, which can conflict with biblical teachings about things like sin, salvation, and our relationship with God. So, it's important to be aware of these differences when considering how to approach personal growth and change biblically. His point? God's Word is sufficient! Hey there! In this episode, Pastor Jeff talks about the difference between psychology and the Bible. But just to clarify, when he mentions psychology, he isn't referring to the entire field of psychology. He is mainly pushing back about the part of psychology that deals with human nature, how to live life, and how to make changes. This includes things like psychological counseling, clinical counseling, psychotherapy, and the psychological aspects of psychiatry. These theories have also influenced some parts of educational psychology, especially behaviorism and humanism. But the problem is that these theories focus on nonphysical aspects of a person, which can conflict with biblical teachings about things like sin, salvation, and our relationship with God. So, it's important to be aware of these differences when considering how to approach personal growth and change biblically. God's Word is sufficient!

Nothing is quite as heartbreaking as watching a good gift be wasted. Imagine that you found the perfect gift for someone you love. The gift matches them in ways that will help them grow and flourish. You give that person the gift and they are thrilled. But, three months later, you find out that they are using the gift in ways that you never intended. Even worse, they have seen others use that same gift in ways that are dangerous, and so the gift has been abandoned and forgotten. How would you feel if you were in this situation? One of the biggest roadblocks for Christians thinking through spiritual gifts is the reality of abuse. Sadly, there are too many instances where Christians have fallen too far into error concerning spiritual gifts and they abuse these wonderful gifts from God to his church. Many Christians reject the gifts not because they have searched the Scriptures but because they have heard stories of Christians at gatherings falling on the floor, jumping around, laughing hysterically, or making animal noises. Christians hear about these events and think, "If that is what people will do with spiritual gifts, I want nothing to do with that!" In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, Pastor Jeff Christianson seeks to address the reality of the abuse of spiritual gifts within the church. In this episode, Jeff directly confronts those who take the spiritual gifts God has given to his church for worship and edification and abuse them in unbiblical ways. No situation can produce more heartbreak within a church community than when a beloved pastor falls into sin. The fall of a pastor or a Christian leader leaves more spiritual damage and gives the enemy more ammo to attack the church with accusations than any other situation. In Scripture, we see that there is one God (Deut 6:4) who exists as three distinct persons (Matt 28:19–20). Since there is one God, someone may expect to see that his works are very similar or come in the same style. That is not the picture of the church today! The church today is an international, multi-generational, multi-ethnic movement where Christians all around the world gather and praise the one living and true God. There is great diversity within the church today. Sadly, this diversity can bother some Christians who expect everything to be the same. On a smaller scale, churches like the ones in Corinth can struggle with others within the church who have different gifts than their own. How would you approach a biblical theology of the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit? What passages are central to understanding the work of the Holy Spirit today? Sadly, many Christians do not approach the work of the Holy Spirit from this perspective. Many times, while they think that they are using a biblical framework, they are mostly responding to both craziness within the church performed in the name of the Holy Spirit and then those who seek to criticize legitimate abuses of the spiritual gifts. One may see a church where everyone has fallen out and people are running around barking like dogs. Clearly, that is not what the Scripture teaches about the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, Christians see those events and swing the pendulum the other way and limit the work of the Spirit of God out of fear. How can we think biblically about the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit? Jesus says that you will know people by their fruits (Matt 7:15–20). In those days, he was speaking to Jews who were conditioned to view their religious leaders as spiritually mature, while Jesus would criticize their clean outer appearances that disguise their dead hearts (Matt 23:27). If we want to ensure that we are walking in the fullness of the Holy Spirit, what fruit should we expect to see in our lives? There is an important question every Christian must ask themselves, "How do I know if I am filled with the Holy Spirit?" This question is not asking, "have I received the Holy Spirit?" More clarifying, the question is asking, "How do I know if I have the fullness of the Holy Spirit?" How do I know if I am living my spiritual life in the fullness that God has designated for me? In today's world, there is a great need for spiritual discernment. It is difficult to recognize the true work of God in people's lives. How can we be sure that our ministries and service for God are truly flowing from a Spirit-filled life? If you were to describe a Christian who is living a Spirit-filled life, what would he or she look like? Maybe it would be a preacher who is powerfully proclaiming the Word of God. Maybe it is a missionary on the front lines of world evangelization. Maybe it is someone who is speaking in tongues at church or raising their heads. It is easy to look at these different pictures and think, "Wow, that person must be filled with the Holy Spirit." How would you describe the experience of the Christian life? For some, the Christian life can feel like a series of mountaintop events. They go to a conference or to a retreat, or they remember when they were converted, and they were filled with such great joy in those moments. God's presence was palpable. They had experiences where God's presence was undeniable. Those experiences are great…but they don't happen very often. On the other hand, does the Christian life feel like a long journey? There are many opinions within the church today on the works of the Holy Spirit. While many Christians have opinions, we must seek to elevate the Bible over opinions. What does God's Word say about the filling of the Holy Spirit? Jesus says in John 3 that the Spirit blows where it wishes (John 3:8). Like the wind, we may see the effects of the Spirit's work, but we cannot see the person of the Spirit himself. This teaching can raise a question, how am I supposed to discern the Spirit's work? Can I have confidence that I have been filled with the Holy Spirit? Have you ever wondered what Jesus meant when he told the disciples that they would be "baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5)? Much confusion surrounds this important biblical teaching. Christians today should understand the importance of "power." Many of us feel the impact when our home or business suddenly loses power. The lights turn off. Nothing works. Are you looking for a simple definition of biblical counseling? Pastor Jeff Christianson defines biblical counseling as helping another person walk with the Lord. Biblical counseling comes down to helping another person walk. It is about progress; it is not a procedure. Many times, our counselees don't see that their problems stem from the fact that they are walking on a path that leads to destruction. Sin can consume our attention so that we are focused on pursuing pleasures, not knowing where our feet will lead us. Solomon warns his readers to watch the paths of their feet (Prov 4:26). Not only must we watch our feet, but we must also watch our spiritual company. Paul's words in Romans 8 remind us that we must walk with the Spirit and not according to the flesh.
