S2 Ep 227227: God's Resources, Not Ours
As counselors, we need to increasingly rely on God's resources, not ours. 2 Corinthians 3:5 states: "Our sufficiency is from God." We are not sufficient of ourselves. Apart from Christ in us, we cannot produce what life demands or what God desires. This is humbling yet liberating. It's humbling to realize we lack what's essential for true living. Yet it's liberating to know God doesn't expect us to produce it ourselves. He freely provides all we need. Our role is simply to draw upon His unlimited resources by faith. "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God..." 2 Corinthians 3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." S2 Ep 226226: Grief - Lessons from the Life of David
In Chapter one of II Samuel we find David receiving word of the death of his dear friend Jonathan, and of King Saul, who he admired so greatly. In observing how David deals with his grief, there are some important lessons we can learn. Sooner or later every one of us will experience the grief and sorrow of having lost someone that we loved very dearly. I learned these lessons from Pastor Chuck Smith, who is now in heaven. S2 Ep 225225: The Death of Our Old Self
Romans 6:3-6 NKJV "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin." S2 Ep 223223: Spiritual Reminders for the New Year
30 Spiritual Reminders for the New Year (Part I) In this episode, Pastor Jeff provides insights on the points initially presented by Dr. Charles Stanley: 1. Our intimacy with God – His highest priority for our lives – determines the impact of our lives. 2. Obey God and leave all the consequences to Him. 3. God's Word is an immovable anchor in times of storm. 4. The awareness of God's presence energizes us for our work. 5. God does not require us to understand His will. Just obey it, even if it seems unreasonable. 6. You reap what you sow, more than you sow, and later than you sow. 7. The dark moments of our life will last only so long as is necessary for God to accomplish His purpose in us. 8. Fight all your battles on your knees, and you win every time. 9. Trusting God means looking beyond what we can see to what God sees. 10. If necessary, God will move heaven and earth to show us His will. S2 Ep 221221: The Spiritual Gift of Counseling
BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com (Romans 12:6, 8 NKJV) (6) Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; ... (8) he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. (Hebrews 5:13-14 NKJV) (13) For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. (14) But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
S2 Ep 220220: His Sustaining Grace
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (7) And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. (8) Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. (9) And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (10) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com
S2 Ep 219219: The Strangest Thing Has Happened To Me…
BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you" (1 Peter 4:12). Problems and difficulties are built right into the Christian life. Christians undergoing them are apt to think it very bewildering and strange. "But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters..." "In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (I Peter 1:6-7). Testings, trials, and fiery ordeals come to prove the genuineness of our faith, demonstrating its reality. The fires of life, warfare, and circumstances test us, but if we walk through them God's way, we will bring praise, glory, and honor to the Lord. "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:2-4). "For the joy that was set before Him [Jesus] endured the cross…" (Hebrews 12:2). "But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:4). In II Corinthians 1:8-11, we get an insight into some of Paul's sufferings: "But we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead" (II Corinthians 1:8-9). "Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us" (II Corinthians 1:10). "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us" (II Corinthians 4:7). God has placed His Treasure in vulnerable earthen vessels ("Christ in you, the hope of glory": Colossians 1:27), so that the power that comes forth in our lives has to be of Him, and the glory goes to Him alone. "We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (II Corinthians 4:8-9).

S2 Ep 211211: God's Sufficiency, Not Ours
Welcome to the Biblical Counseling Podcast! In today's episode, Pastor Jeff talks about the topic of God's resources, not our own, not our own abilities versus God's ability. Not that we're sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. And we know this dovetails really well with you who receive and give counsel. We need to rely on God's resources, we draw upon this in biblical theology, this is the basics, and it gets forgotten so often in the counseling ministry and just life in general, we can lean on our own abilities or intellect or personality or just education and things like that. And we want to more and more rely upon God's resources and not our own. God's sufficiency, not ours, is a powerful and humbling truth that is emphasized throughout the Bible. This means that we cannot depend solely on our own strength, wisdom, or resources to meet our needs and overcome our challenges. Instead, we must rely on God's goodness, faithfulness, and provision to sustain us and help us to accomplish His purposes. In 2 Corinthians 3:5, the Apostle Paul writes, "Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God." This verse reminds us that anything good that we accomplish or receive is not due to our own merit or power, but is a gift from God. We must recognize our own limitations and weaknesses, and put our trust in God who is infinitely capable and loving. This truth of God's sufficiency challenges us to let go of our pride, self-reliance, and fear, and to instead approach every situation with faith and dependence on Him. As we do so, we can experience the peace, joy, and power that come from knowing and serving a God who is more than enough to meet all of our needs.
S2 Ep 210210: Be Not Dismayed
"Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10
S2 Ep 209209: Standing Victoriously In Spiritual Warfare
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness..." - Ephesians 6:10-14
S2 Ep 208208: Victory Over The World
"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you [a]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." - John 16:33
S2 Ep 207207: Victory Over Demonic Forces
"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." Ephesians 6:11 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." 1 Peter 5:8 BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com
S2 Ep 206206: Restoring The Fallen Brother
Restoring The Fallen Brother Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (26) Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Verse one is about restoring the falling brother. The context for this verse, flowing right out of the previous two verses. Galatians 6:1 is a word to those who have found life in the Spirit and who are desiring therefore to walk each day by the Spirit. We are told here that such people will not treat others with prideful competition and jealousy. But rather they will want to help and assist one another. BiblicalCounselingAcademy.com
S2 Ep 205205: Is God's Word Sufficient?
In this episode, Pastor Jeff talks about how psychology is infiltrating the church. Instead of the church impacting the world around us, the world is infecting the body of Christ. So often unbiblical, worldly messages are being brought into the church. The truths of Scripture are the message of the church and must not be mixed with humanistic philosophies. God's Word is powerful. The people of God need to hold fast to the Word of God and the Gospel, which is the power of God for salvation and a changed life. Let us not embrace what is popular, but come back to the Word of God. Jeff often talks about the difference between psychology and the Bible. But just to clarify, when he mentions psychology, he isn't referring to the entire field of psychology. He is mainly pushing back about the part of psychology that deals with human nature, how to live life, and how to make changes. This includes things like psychological counseling, clinical counseling, psychotherapy, and the psychological aspects of psychiatry. These theories have also influenced some parts of educational psychology, especially behaviorism and humanism. But the problem is that these theories focus on nonphysical aspects of a person, which can conflict with biblical teachings about things like sin, salvation, and our relationship with God. So, it's important to be aware of these differences when considering how to approach personal growth and change biblically. His point? God's Word is sufficient! And from such people turn away!

S2 Ep 202202: Forsaking The Wonderful Counselor
Hey there! In this episode, Pastor Jeff talks about the difference between psychology and the Bible. God's Word is sufficient!

S2 Ep 199199: Psychology Infiltrates The Church!
The Holy Spirit works by the Word of God to transform the people of God. God's people are called to make disciples. Biblical Counseling is a form of discipleship. Through discipleship, God transforms a life. God wants to use counselors and direct them to counsel through His mighty Word. He baptized members in the Pacific Ocean. Unlike many other Christian movements, there was no single leader or figurehead of the Jesus movement. S2 Ep 195195: The Abuse Of Spiritual Gifts — Tongues (Part 2)
Nothing is quite as heartbreaking as watching a good gift be wasted. Imagine that you found the perfect gift for someone you love. The gift matches them in ways that will help them grow and flourish. You give that person the gift and they are thrilled. But, three months later, you find out that they are using the gift in ways that you never intended. Even worse, they have seen others use that same gift in ways that are dangerous, and so the gift has been abandoned and forgotten. How would you feel if you were in this situation? In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, Pastor Jeff Christianson finishes his series on the topic of the Holy Spirit. This episode continues a conversation from Episode 194, as Jeff discusses the ways that Christians tragically abuse the gifts from the most important gift-giver in the world, God himself. The Holy Spirit has given his church spiritual gifts for their building up and encouragement, particularly the gifts of prophecy and tongues. Sadly, many Christians take these gifts and either use them in ways that God never intended or neglect them entirely. If Christians are seeking to be biblical, they will see that they can not afford to take either approach. Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 194194: The Abuse Of Spiritual Gifts — Tongues (Part 1)
One of the biggest roadblocks for Christians thinking through spiritual gifts is the reality of abuse. Sadly, there are too many instances where Christians have fallen too far into error concerning spiritual gifts and they abuse these wonderful gifts from God to his church. Many Christians reject the gifts not because they have searched the Scriptures but because they have heard stories of Christians at gatherings falling on the floor, jumping around, laughing hysterically, or making animal noises. Christians hear about these events and think, "If that is what people will do with spiritual gifts, I want nothing to do with that!" In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, Pastor Jeff Christianson seeks to address the reality of the abuse of spiritual gifts within the church. In this episode, Jeff directly confronts those who take the spiritual gifts God has given to his church for worship and edification and abuse them in unbiblical ways. For clarification, pastor Jeff is saying that everything that happens within these ministries is fleshly or that these individuals are non-Christians. Anywhere that God's people gather to hear God's Word preached, people are touched and transformed. So if you have a personal experience with some of these groups that may have gone too far in abusing the gifts, pastor Jeff is not wanting to condemn you, but he is seeking to challenge you to think through whether or not these experiences are truly biblical. Every Christian has a responsibility to address and critique any movement or theological system that contains ideas or concepts not found in Scripture. Want to hear more? S2 Ep 193193: Fruit Is More Excellent Than Gifts
No situation can produce more heartbreak within a church community than when a beloved pastor falls into sin. The fall of a pastor or a Christian leader leaves more spiritual damage and gives the enemy more ammo to attack the church with accusations than any other situation. Sadly, these falls seem all too common within the church today. Do Christians have anything to learn from these events that keep happening in the church today? In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson gets to the heart of the problem surrounding fallen pastors. The issue with too many pastors falling into destructive sin stems from a wider issue within the Christian community. Like Israel with Saul, the Benjaminite (1 Sam 8–10), the Church today is too often distracted by gifts or abilities and loses sight of the most important aspect of ministry leadership: character. Pastor Jeff argues that we should be more concerned about character, fruit, and maturity than talent, gift, and ability. Want to hear more? S2 Ep 192192: All Members Have a Role in the Body of Christ
It is always an exciting time whenever someone becomes a Christian. They have accepted the Gospel, they are born again, and they see the world in a radically transformed way. When someone becomes a Christian, the church has a few immediate priorities. Any new Christian must learn about basics of spiritual disciplines, evangelism, and the Christian life. Also, any new Christian needs help discovering their gifts and being plugged into the body of Christ. Did you know that there are many Christians sitting on the sidelines of ministry in churches today–even in your church? In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his series on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Today's topic is vital for the life of every Christian and every local church, every member has a role to play within the life of the church! The Holy Spirit has given every Christian a particular "gift-mix" or an assortment of spiritual gifts. It is the role of pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Eph 4:11–12). In other words, pastors, teachers, and counselors can help other Christians discover their particular gifts through both teaching them what God says about the spiritual gifts and then giving new Christians opportunities to apply their own spiritual gifts within the body of Christ. S2 Ep 191191: Diversities of Gifts and Ministries
In Scripture, we see that there is one God (Deut 6:4) who exists as three distinct persons (Matt 28:19–20). Since there is one God, someone may expect to see that his works are very similar or come in the same style. That is not the picture of the church today! The church today is an international, multi-generational, multi-ethnic movement where Christians all around the world gather and praise the one living and true God. There is great diversity within the church today. Sadly, this diversity can bother some Christians who expect everything to be the same. On a smaller scale, churches like the ones in Corinth can struggle with others within the church who have different gifts than their own. How do we understand the diversity of the gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit biblically? In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his teaching on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He guides his listeners to 1 Corinthians 12 where he explains Paul's words to a church struggling to understand the nature of the spiritual gifts. There were these different groups of Christians within this church dividing from one another because they thought that their spiritual gifts were better than the gifts of others. In 1 Corinthians 12:4–6, Paul directly confronts this misunderstanding of spiritual gifts…. Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 190190: Gifts And Fruit Of The Holy Spirit
How would you approach a biblical theology of the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit? What passages are central to understanding the work of the Holy Spirit today? Sadly, many Christians do not approach the work of the Holy Spirit from this perspective. Many times, while they think that they are using a biblical framework, they are mostly responding to both craziness within the church performed in the name of the Holy Spirit and then those who seek to criticize legitimate abuses of the spiritual gifts. One may see a church where everyone has fallen out and people are running around barking like dogs. Clearly, that is not what the Scripture teaches about the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, Christians see those events and swing the pendulum the other way and limit the work of the Spirit of God out of fear. How can we think biblically about the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit? In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit by considering four verses that address a biblical approach to the Spirit's work. He argues that we often blame things upon the Holy Spirit because we do not have a sound biblical theology of the Holy Spirit. First, he starts in John 16:14. In this section of the upper room discourse, Jesus tells his disciples what to anticipate concerning the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Want to hear more? S2 Ep 189189: The Holy Spirit's Role In Counseling
In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson takes some time to answer questions from listeners just like you! This episode is a good opportunity to remind listeners of a few opportunities to connect with pastor Jeff on a personal level. First, pastor Jeff always welcomes comments and feedback on his podcasts. He appreciates hearing God is using his teaching ministry in your own life and he wants to see the questions that you have as you listen to his podcasts. If you visit the podcast home page, you can see the student comments section on every podcast. Here, you can join the conversation of other students around the country that are becoming equipped to serve the church as counselors. Second, maybe you are thinking through your own calling and wondering whether God may be setting you apart to serve as a biblical counselor. Did you know that many listeners to this podcast are also students of pastor Jeff at the Biblical Counseling Academy? The Biblical Counseling Academy is a school that is currently enrolling students who want to be equipped in using God's Word to minister personally to others. Many people in the world are struggling with serious problems. They are experiencing the results of the fall and may be wrestling with either sin or suffering. If we look at the New Testament, even Jesus himself–the son of God–needed God's Word as he battled temptation. As Satan confronted Jesus in Matthew 4, Jesus parried his assaults with the simple response: "It is written." Here, Jesus is modeling for his disciples the proper response to temptation, using Scripture to resist the snares of the evil one. If Jesus needed Scripture to end the temptations of Satan, how much more do we need God's Word? Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 188188: Fruit Produced By The Fullness of The Spirit
Jesus says that you will know people by their fruits (Matt 7:15–20). In those days, he was speaking to Jews who were conditioned to view their religious leaders as spiritually mature, while Jesus would criticize their clean outer appearances that disguise their dead hearts (Matt 23:27). If we want to ensure that we are walking in the fullness of the Holy Spirit, what fruit should we expect to see in our lives? In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. This week he discusses the fruit produced by the fullness of the Holy Spirit. In Scripture, we see a symbiotic relationship between the gifts of the Spirit and the fruits of the Spirit. Pastor Jeff looks at two passages of Scripture that explore the nature of spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit. To explain spiritual gifts, pastor Jeff takes his listeners to 1 Corinthians 12 where Paul instructs the church at Corinth on spiritual gifts. By spiritual gifts, Paul means distinct abilities that are given by the Holy Spirit to individual Christians for the purpose of ministry and the edification of the church. In verse 4, Paul tells the Corinthians that there are a variety of gifts. Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 187187: Asking For The Holy Spirit
There is an important question every Christian must ask themselves, "How do I know if I am filled with the Holy Spirit?" This question is not asking, "have I received the Holy Spirit?" More clarifying, the question is asking, "How do I know if I have the fullness of the Holy Spirit?" How do I know if I am living my spiritual life in the fullness that God has designated for me? In this week's episode of the biblical counseling podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit with today's discussion of the topic, "Asking for the Holy Spirit." Too many Christians walk around spiritually empty. You may have counselees who are not experiencing the victory God intended for them because they are spiritually dry. They do not feel God's presence or lack his power against the temptations and challenges of this work. Sadly, their problem is that they do not have because they have not asked (Jas 4:2–3). Counselor, is it possible that your counselees are walking around spiritually empty because they do not know their responsibility to ask God for the fullness of the Holy Spirit? Furthermore, it is possible that you are lacking the resources you need for ministry to be the disciple-maker or counselor God has called you to be? Jesus clearly teaches his disciples the importance and priority of asking God for the Holy Spirit. Pastor Jeff takes his listeners to Luke 11, where Jesus teaches his disciples about prayer… Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 186186: Service From a Spirit-Filled Life
In today's world, there is a great need for spiritual discernment. It is difficult to recognize the true work of God in people's lives. People can hide fleshly and carnal spirits behind Instagram posts, sleek websites, and attractive conferences. How can we be sure that our ministries and service for God are truly flowing from a Spirit-filled life? In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. This week, pastor Jeff helps readers think through discerning true service from a Spirit-filled life from the many imitations we see in the church today. To help us, pastor Jeff takes his listeners to John 6:63, where Jesus himself provides a test for discerning the true work of God within the world. In John 6:63, Jesus says to his disciples, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life." Jesus is clear in John 6:63, all spiritual life and all true spiritual service comes from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit alone is the source of all true ministry and productivity in the Christian life, in the church, and in biblical counseling. Jesus clearly contrasts the Spirit with the flesh, that human nature that we have within us originating in Adam's fall into sin. All of humanity is naturally fleshly, selfish, and focused upon the things of man. Too many Christians take the resources of the flesh and try to apply them to ministry and the spiritual life. S2 Ep 185185: Outflow of A Spirit-Filled Life
If you were to describe a Christian who is living a Spirit-filled life, what would he or she look like? Maybe it would be a preacher who is powerfully proclaiming the Word of God. Maybe it is a missionary on the front lines of world evangelization. Maybe it is someone who is speaking in tongues at church or raising their heads. It is easy to look at these different pictures and think, "Wow, that person must be filled with the Holy Spirit." In this episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson challenges our unspoken assumptions concerning the nature of the Spirit-filled life. It is easy for Christians to see some great public demonstrations of a Christian as an example of being Spirit-filled. The problem with these pictures is that they can set unrealistic expectations for Christians concerning the Christian life. In passages such as Ephesians 5:18–21, Paul's description of the Christian life is simultaneously counterintuitive and challenging. Want to hear more? S2 Ep 184184: Be Always Being Filled
How would you describe the experience of the Christian life? For some, the Christian life can feel like a series of mountaintop events. They go to a conference or to a retreat, or they remember when they were converted, and they were filled with such great joy in those moments. God's presence was palpable. They had experiences where God's presence was undeniable. Those experiences are great…but they don't happen very often. On the other hand, does the Christian life feel like a long journey? Does it feel like a long road trip where you feel like you are passing the same trees or signs for miles and miles? Are you spiritually bored? What is the best way to view the Christian life? In this episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, Pastor Jeff Christianson continues this study of the Holy Spirit. Today, he discusses the topic of "Be Always Filled." This topic comes from an incredible command Paul gave to the church at Ephesus in Ephesians 5:18. Ephesians 5:18 reads, "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit." It is sometimes helpful to point to the original Greek to grasp the full significance of Paul's writings. At the end of verse 18, Paul writes "but be filled with the Spirit." Want to hear more? S2 Ep 183183: The Work And Person Of The Holy Spirit
There are many opinions within the church today on the works of the Holy Spirit. While many Christians have opinions, we must seek to elevate the Bible over opinions. What does God's Word say about the filling of the Holy Spirit? In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. This week, he looks at how the Spirit works across the book of Acts to argue that the filling of the Holy Spirit is a continuous work. Many Christians view the Holy Spirit's filling as an event that happens once in a Christian's life. It is clear from the book of Acts that the Spirit works in many ways and Christians should expect a continual filling and refilling of the Holy Spirit across the span of their Christian life. The filling of the Holy Spirit must be seen as a way of life. We are constantly dependent upon the triune God. We must live in a constant relationship with him. We should be asking God in prayer for the resources of heaven to be poured upon us as we engage in ministry–especially biblical counseling. The early church demonstrated this dependence across the book of Acts. Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 182182: Boldness To Declare The Risen Christ
Jesus says in John 3 that the Spirit blows where it wishes (John 3:8). Like the wind, we may see the effects of the Spirit's work, but we cannot see the person of the Spirit himself. This teaching can raise a question, how am I supposed to discern the Spirit's work? Can I have confidence that I have been filled with the Holy Spirit? What are the results of the Spirit's work in a believer's life? In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. This week, pastor Jeff continues his exploration of Acts 2 and discusses the topic of "Boldness to Declare the Risen Christ." In Acts 2, the Apostles are filled with the Holy Spirit and begin proclaiming the wonderful works of God to those visiting Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost. In the immediate aftermath of this spontaneous preaching ministry to the thousands of visitors in the city, some men begin to mock the disciples, saying that they were drunk (Acts 2:13). Peter's response is instructive for biblical counselors. Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 181181: Being Filled With The Holy Spirit
Have you ever wondered what Jesus meant when he told the disciples that they would be "baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5)? Much confusion surrounds this important biblical teaching. In addition, many believers live their lives missing an essential ingredient for their spiritual growth. In the book of Acts, Luke helps us understand the biblical teaching on the baptism of the Holy Spirit with three phrases. Luke speaks of being baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5), being filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4), and the coming upon of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). These three phrases all speak of the same spiritual exprience, the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Want to hear more? S2 Ep 180180: The Empowering of the Spirit
Christians today should understand the importance of "power." Many of us feel the impact when our home or business suddenly loses power. The lights turn off. Nothing works. Everything that you rely upon shuts down. The loss of power today reveals our dependence as people. The picture in the Bible inverses this experience. Scripture says that we have no power in ourselves. But, Christ promises that we as his disciples will receive power from the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). This empowering work of the Holy Spirit is the topic of today's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. In this week's episode, pastor and counselor Jeff Christianson continues his study on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. This week's episode focuses on three preposition that define the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the believer. If you have studied the biblical languages, you know that the smallest words can have the greatest meaning! That truth applies to the Bible's teaching on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is with us, in us, and upon us. Want to hear more? Tune into this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast. S2 Ep 179179: Walking in the Spirit
Are you looking for a simple definition of biblical counseling? Pastor Jeff Christianson defines biblical counseling as helping another person walk with the Lord. Biblical counseling comes down to helping another person walk. It is about progress; it is not a procedure. Many times, our counselees don't see that their problems stem from the fact that they are walking on a path that leads to destruction. Sin can consume our attention so that we are focused on pursuing pleasures, not knowing where our feet will lead us. Solomon warns his readers to watch the paths of their feet (Prov 4:26). Not only must we watch our feet, but we must also watch our spiritual company. Paul's words in Romans 8 remind us that we must walk with the Spirit and not according to the flesh. In this week's episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor and counselor Jeff Christianson continues this study on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Biblical counselors must know what the Bible says about our most important helper in counseling, the Great Counselor.
