EMJ’s Guest today is today is Alma Rosa’s winemaker, Samra Morris. Samra was born in Sarajevo Bosnia. She grew up during the Bosnian war of 1992-95. Samra is the first woman from Bosnia to make wines in California. She completed a viticulture internship at St. Supéry during the 2014 harvest as well as working with Rivers Brown’s Mending Wall for three harvests. Samra formerly served as quality control manager for Free Flow Wines. She was recruited by General Manager Debra Eagle to join Alma Rosa as an Assistant Winemaker in 2018. Within less than a year, she was promoted to winemaker. At Alma Rosa, Samra has a focus on Burgundian and Rhône varieties On this episode, MJ and Samra discuss Samra’s childhood in Bosnia and growing up during wartime. EMJ’s guest is artist, an art historian, a wine collector, a salesman, an importer, and the founder of Vom Boden, Stephen Bitterolf. Stephen came to NYC in the early 00s to get his PhD in Northern Renaissance painting - during which time his fascination was born. In 2005, he landed a job as a salesperson at the newly opened Crush Wine & Spirits, one of New York City’s sleekest wine stores at the time.In 2012, he became an importer of German wines which led to his founding of Vom Boden. Vom Boden is a small company, focusing on small growers. He later founded Rieslingfeier, an annual event that seeks to celebrate German Rieslings, to provide a greater context for this incredible history of winemaking – to re-emphasize the historical importance of terroir. In 1986, Victor moved to France to jump start his wine career. VOS Selections has been a staple in the wine industry for over 35 years. Her wines have been dubbed by critics as “some of the most profound wines on the planet” (Jeb Dunnuck). Drawing inspiration from the Burgundian tradition of single vineyards, Isabel produced three different cuvées from Saint Prefert’s estates from 2003 to 2019: Classique, Réserve Auguste Favier and Collection Charles Giraud. After taking on a project with South Africa, where he successfully developed plans to market wines to the United States, Morales jumped into the importing business, and started his company, 57 Main Street Imports. Peter's latest venture is Black Hawk Imports founded in 2014. Eric and his wife Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of property in Paso Robles, CA in 2001 with the intent of growing the best fruit for some of the best wineries in the area. After making wine with Justin Smith (of Saxum) for five years and Stephan Asseo (of L'Aventure Wines) for two years, the Jensens decided it was time to create their own expression with Booker Vineyard. The 2005 Vintage was Booker Vineyard's first release with the wines being made by Eric himself. The vineyard received organic certification in April of 2021. In this episode, Eric is fresh in the studio after a big night of celebrating in NYC - and he and MJ quickly jump into discussing the bottles. This conversation is unscripted and full of heart. EMJ’s guest is a winemaker and the founder of Massican Wines, Dan Petroski. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY where he went on to play football at Columbia. He went on to work for Time Inc. while also studying for his MBA at NYU, both ingredients for a promising future in magazine publishing. Dan began his wine education literally winning and dining clients around Manhattan’s best restaurants. He set off for Sicily, where he interned at Valle dell’Acate for a year. Dan originally intended to return to NYC to sell wine, but later received a harvest invitation in 2006 in Napa Valley. Not long after that, Petroski was hired as cellar master, ultimately claiming the Larkmead winemaker title in 2012. In 2009, Dan launched his own wine business called Massican, which specializes in Italian inspired white wines. Massican is a one-man operation where Dan manages all winemaking, sales and marketing. In July of 2020 Dan went back to his digital media roots launching Massican Magazine online. S3 Ep 47“You Talk’n to Me?” Drew Nieporent on Longevity and Relevance in the NYC Restaurant Scene.
EBorn and raised in Manhattan, Drew started down his road to restauranteur as a young man in the 1960s. He went on to earn a degree from the School of Hotel Management at Ivy league, Cornell University while working on cruise ships. By 1985 he had opened his first restaurant, Montrachet, which earned three stars from the NYTimes and a coveted Michelin star, keeping its rating for decades. Drew formed his first of many celebrity partnerships in 1990 when he opened Tribeca Grill in 1990 with Robert DeNiro. The now NY landmark restaurant attracted an all star roster of investors including Bill Murray, Sean Penn, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Making 1994 a defining year in Nieporent’s decades long success story, he once again partnered with Robert DeNiro and renowned sushi chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, to open Nobu NYC, Next Door Nobu, and Nobu Fifty-Seven - all of which earned a three star rating from the NYTimes. And of course, Myriad's excellence in wine service is widely acknowledged and its only restaurant group to earn three coveted Grand Awards from Wine Spectator Magazine. In 2005, Myriad opened Crush Wine & Spirits, which was named the best new wine shop by Food & Wine Magazine. MJ and Drew discuss Drew’s early years and how going out to dinner frequently in NYC with his father, a lawyer for the NYC State Liquor License Department, as a kid helped hone his eventual career path. Born and raised in Carroll Gardens, Mark Iacono grew up fully immersed in Italian American culture. He was a regular neighborhood kid. He enjoyed his grandmother’s cooking, playing centerfield, and trips to the local candy shop with his father. Then in 2006 without any experience in the culinary arts or restaurant business, Mark opened his now iconic pizzeria, Lucali - its location in the very same storefront of the candy shop his father had taken him to throughout his childhood. Lucali has become a B.Y.O.B. destination for wine collectors — the front window is lined with empty Burgundy bottles, including a 1971 La Tâche. Mark's clientele include the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonce, Paul McCartney, and David Beckham. Mark has appeared in New York Magazine, Insider, the Today Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers and Netflix’s Ugly Delicious. She is now the co-founder and Chief Imaginator at Kalamata’s Kitchen, where she brings together her lifelong passions for both food and books. The daughter of two south Indian immigrants, Sarah grew up in the rural town of Somerset, Pennsylvania, and was surrounded by food from a young age. She would spend summers in Kerala visiting her grandparents, forming some of her earliest food memories. While working at various restaurants in Pittsburgh and then at Le Bernardin, Sarah obtained the prestigious Advanced Sommelier certification and was featured in the popular SOMM film series. Through her storytelling work with Kalamata’s Kitchen, Sarah hopes to create a confident character that other children of color can see themselves in, while also encouraging all kids to look at different foods and cultures with a sense of curiosity and compassion.Sarah’s incredible passion for food, her Indian heritage and upbringing, shines through in her Kalmata’s Kitchen books, events, online travel guides and when she speaks, to children and adults alike. A native of Southern California, Patterson began his wine career as a Sommelier in Las Vegas, working with the venerable Wolfgang Puck at his signature restaurants on "The Strip". While there, he built a passion and a strong platform of knowledge focused on international luxury wines, with a specialty in wines from Italy and Spain. Patterson’s love of wine and natural ability to impart that passion to consumers, especially luxury customers, quickly lead him into the world of sales and marketing. Over the last 20 years, his deep knowledge of international and luxury wines seamlessly translated into working as a sales and marketing leader with small, US family-owned wine producers. Landon Patterson became a member of the Hundred Acre team at the beginning of 2013. Over the past eight years, he has managed all aspects of sales and marketing, which work hand-in-hand in driving revenue, and expanded the Hundred Acre portfolio of wines into 35 countries on 4 continents. When he’s not traveling the world for work - He’s also dog daddy to his beloved French Bulldog, Sigmund.
