Childless Millennial, Part III

This week, Kate updates you on the first half of the IVF/egg retrieval process and, in the second half, is fortunate enough to ask Kindbody co-founder Dr. Fahimeh Sasan about your questions regarding egg freezing/embryos/IVF because Kate wished she knew these things but was (and still is honestly) a person who isn't super into kid-related content. But for those of you that identified with Childless Millennial in 2020, this is kind of an update, where she summarizes how she got here, how she used to feel, the core drivers in changing her mind, her experience with TTC and loss, and what the outcome was of the first embryo retrieval and why she'll likely do a second. Some of it you've heard before (if you don't want to hear updated thoughts, go to the second hour) but wanted to have one megasode to serve as a one-stop-shop of all that's happened where she's crying considerably less than when she explained it in real-time. Sorry for the departure from fun pop culture or lifestyle stuff, but she dragged you into this mess two years ago and will update you as she navigates what turned out to be a very not straightforward path to motherhood, if anything, so those of you like her, existing amongst a minefield of other people's best-case scenarios at all times, feel a little less crazy. S1 Ep 225That Don't Impress KD Much

This week, Kate has 3 of her friends from college on the podcast following a pilgrimage to the Shania Twain residency to talk about the things that don't impress them much about Vegas (and all the ways Vegas is no longer impressed with them). Following their trips to Vegas at ages 25 and 30 (now here for Kate's 35th birthday), they've noticed some subtle changes from their party girl days, e.g., getting rejected from a day club for having a breast pump and Kate being checked in to the hotel alongside rogue fertility advice. They discuss their weekend mishaps in restaurants, hotels, and spas, discuss the Shania concert, and then honestly review some overrated hotspots on the strip. Then, they reminisce about things like sorority trauma bonding, Kate & Jasmine's early rivalry formed at Yearbook camp, and getting sued for downloading Aladdin on Limewire, among other memories, then finish with crowd-sourced listener "don't impress me" moments. S1 Ep 223GDI Candy

This week, Kate starts by sharing her thoughts on how being fashionable in the early aughts meant to try the absolute HARDEST, a revelation that feels as glaring as her patent leather pumps after witnessing the shift in collegiate fashion upon spending "welcome weekend" in a college town. Then, she touches on Selling OC before reminiscing via reading through residual sorority stories that listeners submitted the past two years from when she was going to resuscitate the sorority series (before accidentally spending two hours last week analyzing if it was high camp instead). A variety of topics are covered, from sayings like "we plan and God laughs," to the lore of one-shoulder tops, reviews the Kingdom Chaser/Clout Chaser/Straight No Chaser Venn Diagram of sorority archetypes, discusses the sorority symbols that had the most hot-girl energy, to lusting after the mystery of a non-Greek suitor who (if you can believe it) attended college to *learn,* to name a few. Kate also discusses the differences between NPC and NPHC and then snorkels the submitted responses for how chapters sugarcoated the reasons for why a girl wasn't the right "fit" by saying things like she's "worldly" "cute" or "nice," among other adjectives that are compliments in real life but death wishes in the Greek system. However, like any true sorority girl, we always end on a positive and Kate promises this will be the last Greek Life-related ep for 2022. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Store

This week, Kate discusses Bama RushTok from a slightly different angle, exploring the elaborate gender performance and implicit artifice of sorority recruitment in the context of being interpreted as [postmodern] 'camp' and a form of high art to consume, per the insight of Tiktok users @shorthouseplant and @themostes. The meaning of camp made the internet collectively melt down in 2019 following the Met Gala (given its defining characteristic being an inability to be concretely defined), but Kate attempts to explore how as a society we've embraced this incredibly unserious process with a serious level of investment perhaps due to the naïveté of those earnestly performing within these exaggerated circumstances. She also deep dove breakout star Kylan and just needed someone to talk to about the high/low of her dorm room, her pageant trajectory and [alleged] last minute switch to Bama, and her hypothesis about what's going on behind the scenes when you show up to Bama rush with a catch phrase and complete ~11 brand deals in 14 days of high exposure. Kate also spends a solid amount of time thinking of the bumping process as a sort of performance art, and talks about the increased showcasing of dancing/cheerleading talent in Tiktok videos, where the performance of sorority values in the form of costumes and choreography is not only performed for positioning among PNMs, but now to the world, and Kate's worried about the HS cheer gals being pulled out of retirement to do roundoff back handsprings in spirit skirts on concrete in the name of sisterhood seduction. S1 Ep 222Soft Swinging for the Fences

This week, Kate is joined by her sister to discuss what they've been up to, e.g. their unforeseen TV debut, Kate's new appreciation for sports, and the latest updates with the "soft swinging" scandal they recorded about for Patreon in May. Then, they snorkel listener submitted topics like nostalgic foods, first day of school outfits, what it's like to be the 'planner' of the group, making new friends in a city, The Summer I Turned Pretty, favorite fictional bands, and much more. S1 Ep 223Kate-lilah #15 (Answering Listener Voicemails)

This week, Kate is in and out of coherence as she records responses to listener voicemails throughout week 2 of fertility treatments. Kate-lilah is a play on radio icon Delilah's soothing highly subjective advice and once a quarter Kate answers listener questions, requests for advice, or plays commentary called into the show's voicemail hotline (312) 379-9676. This week, Kate chose a list of light topics by design for a breezy escape of an episode (with the exception of the last that's a bit more serious). Topics include: -An unexpected hormonal side effect -Kate's beef with the Charli D'Amelio / Landon Barker / Huddy triangle -A snorkel through dorm checklist / move-in culture -Ideal Bravo Ultimate Girls Trip, housewives & non-housewives edition -How to define A, B, & C list celebrities and how to stratify across showbiz/sports/influencers/etc. -Caught in a love triangle. What's the beth thing to do? -Does Kate believe in Taylor Swift's rumored skipped album "Karma?" -The Katherine/Kaitlin/Kate/Katie of it all -How to respond to people who say rude things about how much IVF is or saying things like "you should just adopt" etc. Enjoy! S1 Ep 222Sami is a Girl's Best Friend

This week, Kate is joined by Sami Sage (Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Betches) to have a stimulating conversation while they both happen to be stimulating their ovaries. They discuss their respective decisions to freeze embryos (briefly! skip mins 15-25ish if you want to dodge fertility talk), then venture into topics that are half light pop culture and half a deeper religious discussion (Kate's favorite combo!). First, they discuss their feelings about being renters/city dwellers, then talk about TS and her involvement with Crawdads and David O. Russell, Ben and Jen, DeuxMoi's identity reveal, Jen Shah pleading guilty, and Kate's frustration in feeling like Miami swim week on Tiktok is VS fashion show deja vu. Then, Sami shares some of her experiences and observations in the context of Judaism that are related to the topics Kate often covers re: Evangelical Christianity. She discusses the differences between identifying as secular or non-secular, shares some differences about Jewish summer camp relative to Kate's experiences, discusses what purity culture looks like in the context of certain Orthodox practices, explains the antithetical nature of abortion laws, etc. Overall a balanced and interesting episode that hits on hot topics and also provides a helpful perspective about commonly discussed topics on BTI5 in the context of another faith experience. S1 Ep 221An Elephant Never Forgets

This week, Kate talks through a prompt from a listener about the times somebody said something to you in passing that ended up burned in your brain about your appearance, skills, competence, personality, etc. In a conversation about why words matter (revelatory!!), Kate rages through insults, side comments, and backhanded compliments listeners submitted that were likely meaningless on behalf of the messenger but transformational in their messaging long term. She also discusses her own list of personal experiences with offhanded comments or passive aggression and which are in red, underlined. At one point she also reviews her questionable choice to venture into the anonymous q&a box on Instagram and talks through some other personal musings about people that make a personality type out of being "brutally honest" and what that's really doing for anyone's life. S1 Ep 220Preaching To The Fryer

This week, Kate discusses Evangelical influencers, from more extreme transitions, e.g. a fashion influencer who now offers deliverance from abortion demons (?), to the reality-star-to-preacher-pipeline of young women of faith that are talented public speakers like Duck Dynasty's Sadie Robertson and The Bachelor's Madi Prewett that now use their platforms as ministries. Kate also plays clips from other mid-sized influencers, masochistically watches a couple videos from Girl Defined, and talks a bit about her experience analyzing the persuasive tactics of Evangelical preachers. Specifically, how she draws parallels to motivational speakers and MLMs that all talk in the same way, who do things like verbally paint big metaphors from tiny anecdotes, engineer emotional buildups that culminate with guilt and a scream-crying call to action, and then manufacture feelings of hopefulness after purposefully tearing you down. All in the context of wanting people to be mindful of the people that influence an incredibly influential voting bloc that has taken away our bodily autonomy, White Evangelical Christians. Enjoy! S1 Ep 219Pinnie For Your Thoughts

This week, Kate takes on the topic of P.E. class and snorkels through the obscure political origins of the Presidential Physical Fitness exam, the trauma of locker rooms, public weigh-ins, wearing of never-washed mesh 'pinnies,' and the annual dangling of herself and her dignity from a pull-up bar, among other memorable elements of 90s/00s gym class culture that would likely not hold up today. She also talks about her tall girl complex and body image issues and wonders how metrics of athletic prowess influenced her sense of physical identity, then muses about how not being 'talented and gifted' likely had similar scholastic implications. Mostly she does things like complain about how traumatizing running the mile was for a good 10 minutes, but not before examining the weirdness of loose gym uniform shorts and the frequency of relying on a peer to hold your feet downwind. Part personal anecdote, part historical research, part crowdsourced, this is a lighthearted nostalgic ep that hopefully allows you to escape these trying times over the long weekend. Enjoy! S1 Ep 218Mary Had a Little Scam

This week, Kate discusses our obsession with scams and scam documentaries, and does a spin-off of the popular Tiktok prompt of "what's something that is a scam but we've normalized it so much we no longer realize it's a scam?" from her personal list of grievances, e.g. The American Dream, bridesmaid dresses, student loans, only married couples receiving benefits, among other things, and also goes through crowd-sourced submissions of things people think have big scam energy. She also details her disdain for True Crime as entertainment and explores why she prefers this category. However, she begins by discussing the Supreme Court overturning the landmark case of Roe v. Wade announced Friday, while she was away from equipment and had already recorded this week's episode (so forgive her, this section was done very last minute), but she uses the first half-hour to address perhaps the biggest scam of all: that people believe restricting access to abortion care is pro-life when it is unequivocally anti-women and stands to put countless lives at risk by forgoing human rights and medical best practice in favor the intervention of dangerous political and religious ideologies. From obscure locations to buddy system politics, museum gift shop culture, coach buses versus school buses, chaperone assignments, seeing your crush in the wild in street clothes, hookups mid-transit, to processing confusing feelings about historical war reenactments, this episode has something for everyone! She's Just Not That Into Ew (Dating Advice Deep Dive)

This week, Kate discusses the world of dating advice, both interpersonal and professional, from the books she read in her single days like Why Men Love Bitches, He's Just Not That Into You, and other best-sellers like Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man or The Rules. She also discusses the confusing nature of casual advice we give our peers and loved ones that can be grounded in anecdote despite being delivered as gospel, causing us to weigh the subjective input of others far too heavily on important matters that impact our personal lives. She also discusses how sociopolitical climates influence generational beliefs about relationships and marriage, and how those tropes and cliches taught to young people infiltrate current generations with irrelevant advice about gender roles that deserve a great deal of nuance and free will to be applied to your circumstances (e.g. why buy the cow). Then, since Kate went to California last minute to have a bday drink with her sister, she asks Kelly to chime in as they read listener-submitted examples of advice Beths said their well-intentioned loved ones incessant provide about dating that they find dismissive, condescending, cliche, and/or sexist as single women. This episode is not designed to give advice but to help us all be better friends by analyzing the nature of unproductive input. Enjoy! S1 Ep 211Kate of the Union

This week while nursing a tailbone injury, Kate made a list of topics to take up with you this week for her own state of the union prior to the second hour where she covers Revolve Fest's annual social media sorority recruitment video vibes of being both welcoming and also heavily implying there's no way in hell you'll get in amidst floral backdrops and fancy-free dispositions. Topics prior capture a great deal of range, from pounding clementines to Selling Sunset Season 5 to white cheddar popcorn to the Kardashians on Hulu to a marital dispute she's amidst about turning lights off that led to Kate's perilous fall. She also shares a life-changing tip that made her realize she's been sleeping incorrectly on a pillow her entire life. She also does a review of some Kardashian, Bieber, & TS trademark activity then expresses concern about celeb skincare being the new licensed fragrance, except worse because it's promised by faces that have benefited from many more things than just topical skincare. After that, she discusses the vague lore surrounding Revolve events that exude exclusivity, her empathy for influencers that really wanted to make connections but got duped into a suspicious brand ambassador situation, and also covers the parallels drawn to Fyre Fest. S1 Ep 210CosmoGIRL! Talk (with Atoosa Rubenstein)

This week, Kate interviews millennial magazine icon Atoosa Rubenstein, former editor-in-chief of CosmoGIRL! And Seventeen magazine in the early-mid 2000s, who has now entered back into the pop culture spotlight with her Substack Atoosa Unedited. Kate and Atoosa talk about her rise to being the youngest founder and editor-in-chief in Hearst history, her experience in the glam magazine world in the aughts, celeb encounters, "Devil Wears Prada" moments, the benefits and downfalls of her inexperience in a leadership role, and her ultimate exit from the spotlight as a result of insurmountable burnout. She also speaks very honestly about her experience with sexual assault in her childhood, the importance of magazines in helping her identify it, and the passion she had for instilling confidence and bodily autonomy in young girls, even in an era we now side-eye as not being the most forward-thinking or body confident (understatement). They also talk about Kate's burning questions re: the heavy-hitting topics, e.g. her experience being a judge on America's Next Top Model and if someone made up all the puns in Trauma-Rama. Enjoy! S1 Ep 209The Care and Keeping of Ew

This week, Kate reads e-mails listeners wrote in about their experiences learning puberty & sex ed. First, Kate snorkels through some of her early impressions of DOING IT from pop culture, reviews a brief history of sex ed in the US, and discusses some of the environmental nuances of the 90s and 00s that made abstinence-only education the status quo. Part-funny, part-cringe, part-heartbreaking, this episode showcases a wide spectrum of implications of not receiving comprehensive sex ed. S1 Ep 208Be There in Forever 35

This week, Kate is joined by Kate Spencer and Doree Shafrir from the Forever35 podcast to discuss all things in the name of self-care from today and yesteryear. Kate starts out by reading some of the weird/random lies people submitted that they told as kids on Instagram, e.g. faking eye exams, injuries, and orthodontia for unknown reasons. Then the Kates and Doree discuss rom-com jobs, working in the 'mean girl' era of journalism (e.g. Gawker), beauty advice in teen mags, nostalgic drug store products, adolescent skincare, hanging at the mall as a third place, maintaining an identity as parents, and also reveal their holy grail and most overrated product picks. S1 Ep 206Once Upon A Timeline

In this episode, Kate explores the parent wars she sees taking place about a cute, fictional movie on Facebook timelines (paired with the glorification of much more problematic fairy tales) and uses it as an opportunity to snorkel through many nostalgic topics involving her preteen rebellion, from cursing during hand-clapping games to high key Pagan sleepover rituals to boy band obsessions, grinding culture, and more. Kate also provides her take on the movie Turning Red, reads comments from pearl clutchers and celebrators alike, and talks through the implications of people insisting everything in this world be created in a way that represents their hyper-specific (often religiously affiliated) value system. At one point, Rachel Hollis is brought up, she can't help herself. Kate also reminisces about her own "red panda" moments in childhood, then talks through some Disney themes people romanticize that are actually quite problematic, meandering through Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, etc. Then, she does a brief snorkel on a much-requested topic: Disney adults. Like Turning Red, this episode will not align with nor reflect everyone's specific needs, so please take it with a grain of entertainment-based salt coming from a non-Disney diehard. Enjoy! S1 Ep 204Rattantouille (feat. Kelly Kennedy)

This week, Kate is joined by her sister Kelly for an escape from real life to talk reality tv and real estate. More specifically, they discuss Love is Blind on Netflix (skip minutes 45-1:00 ish to avoid spoilers) and then discuss their (and other crowd-sourced Beth's) petty preferences for their needs in rentals/homes, following Kate's TV mounting journey. No societal pressure nor water pressure is spared in this thinkpiece about feeling like we should be in a place where we can afford more than we can in a place we call home. Please take with a grain of salt. RomComs part 2 will be out next week once Kate moves and gets her studio is back in order! S1 Ep 203Rom Comaraderie

In stressful times, Kate seeks out romantic comedies, using the genre's poor grasp on reality to escape her own. So this week, we have a rom-com deep dive done on a whim, following a fateful viewing of the critically-unacclaimed film Something Borrowed. In this episode, Kate goes through some of her favorite films, trends, themes, and theories as it relates to the art of the so-bad-it's-good romantic comedy. She explains the boundaries of her questionable taste, then meanders through the high points from 1989-2003 before she runs out of time, and discusses favorite romcom tropes (e.g friends to lovers, supernatural occurrences, writes article/places bet), trends (e.g. phrases as movie titles, everything about weddings), actor/actress combos & swaps, sound bites, grand gestures, etc. At one point there's a snorkel about Kate's hot takes on Judd Apatow movies and her dependency on Paul Rudd's soothing demeanor. Later on, Kate walks through a spreadsheet she created in chronological order to make sure she doesn't miss any highlights, but she only makes it to 2003, so, see you next week? She will post a spreadsheet link here once it's done for a list you can refer to and/or check on the @bethereinfive @bethereinfivepodcast account for a link. Enjoy! S1 Ep 202Raising The Barbizon

A joint episode containing an abridged part 2 of "Fitch, Please" (A&F Deep Dive) as well as listener stories about mall modeling & scams masquerading as magazine classified "modeling schools." The episode begins with Kate's windy thoughts about her obsession with malls, magazine editors, models, and related media, and while she draws almost no helpful conclusions, she has plenty of thoughts. This episode also contains snorkels aplenty in between stories about A&F and modeling, from 90s commercial jingles, to Barbies, Kate's own issues with body image, orange juice conspiracies, and more! There may be a Babysitter's Club detour? Perhaps not a 'model' episode, but a fun one nonetheless. Enjoy! And head to patreon.com/bethereinfive later this week for the cut footage and extra stories. S1 Ep 199The Default in Our Stars (feat. Merritt Beck)

Everything's bigger in Texas, including Kate's problems!! First, there's an intro detailing the chaotic series of events that happened this week while stuck in Texas, e.g. having to cancel a show for the first time, a cryptic doctor's voicemail, a hotel scam, and a confusing housing situation, among other things. Following that, podcast regular Merritt Beck joins Kate (as both her host for the week and a guest for the pod) to have a casual conversation whilst pregaming an icy walk to a bar to mourn the delay of Track 5. They discuss things like influencers leaving Instagram for the algorithm, putting kids on the internet, the magic of "getting ready" in college, DARE, Instagram husbands, home decor styles, dating as an influencer, among other things. Part 2 of A&F (and mall models/Barbizon!) coming next week but Kate hopes this will be sufficient for now given the unforeseen circumstances. Enjoy! S1 Ep 199Fitch, Please

In this deep dive, Kate examines the history, controversy, nostalgia, turnaround, inappropriate t-shirts, catalogs, and employee policies of iconic retailer Abercrombie & Fitch through the lens of the comeback it's making now. S1 Ep 197Not So Vague Marketing Job (with Charlene Polite Corley)

This week, Kate is joined by an old friend and former colleague Charlene Polite Corley (who is now more importantly VP of Diverse Insights & Partnerships at Nielsen) to talk about a variety of topics in the realm of marketing careers, market research data, and the importance of representation in media. They talk through their early days in the big city, discuss data quality in a splintered media landscape, bounce around through topics like media literacy and data privacy, and eventually walk through Charlene's specific role in providing insights that help inform and hold the media industry accountable for their diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Charlene shares the importance of developing research that focuses on the needs and values of historically excluded groups and they talk through how data can be responsibly used to improve the quantity and quality of content that tells the stories of diverse communities in both advertising and entertainment. S1 Ep 198John Three SixTeenage Dream

This episode is for lovers of 2021's episode "Pussycat Dull," when Kate read listener stories about nostalgic and embarrassing attempts to make romantic interests jealous in our youth. This week, Kate similarly crowdsourced stories about doing this in a religious context, asking listeners for their funny stories about weird things they did in the name of love who were part of youth groups, retreats, camps, and/or trips that hyperfocused on young women finding and/or praying for their future husband at the ripe age of 15. From strategic pew alignment to get some "peace be with you" sugar, to tales of a rendezvous behind the ropes course, these stories certainly do not disappoint. S1 Ep 195FOREVER '21.

Musings about DCOMs, recent events, wearing your metaphorical seatbelt, the mystery of literal seatbelt purses, Kate's educational plastic surgery consultation gone awry, things that haven't changed all that much from when she was 21 and now in 2021, a lot of random interjected thoughts about famed scripture-forward bags of Forever 21, and some closing thoughts for the year that are less of a bid for better days, and more of a plea to be better to yourself in 2022. S1 Ep 194Why Buy The Cowl? (with Caroline Moss)

This week, Kate is joined by podcaster, writer, producer (and fellow influencer culture enthusiast) Caroline Moss (from Gee Thanks, Just Bought It) to discuss literally everything and nothing about conspicuous consumption. They do a lighthearted snorkel through many topics, such as 2010s fashions, the Dyson airwrap, the elusive cowl neck, going out tops, Michael Kors watches, bloggers pretending they shop at Wal-Mart, DSLR phases, early Bachelor influencers, sponcon pet peeves, and what they think wear now that they'll laugh at later. They also reminisce about the utter chaos of NYC's "Fashion's Night Out," where thirsty pashmina-wearing transplants from the suburbs (like Kate & Caroline) went celeb spotting for the sake of the *economy* in the BIG APPLE. Eventually, they review (and lightly roast) some men's gift guides and 2011 women's gift guides that remind them of simpler (and more lacquered) times, which delightfully sends them on a detour through some charming copy from a favorite alliterative blog of yesteryear. Lastly, they quickly discuss some products influencers promote that are not overrated, according to Caroline. Enjoy! S1 Ep 192Tok Therapy (with Amanda White)

This week, Kate is joined by licensed therapist Amanda White (@therapyforwomen) to discuss the proliferation of mental health content (and digital diagnoses) on Tiktok and Instagram. In the past year or so, there's been an uptick of quippy, short-form videos that deliver information about serious mental health topics (that would require a lot of individualized therapy to formally diagnose) and they are often oversimplified in a clickbait format on social media, creating a spectrum of helpful to harmful. They talk about how sharing this information can be incredible in its ability to spark a conversation, encourage people to pursue mental healthcare, and help people feel less alone by finding community in a diagnosis. On the flip side, this content can needlessly label common behaviors as being a problem and over-attribute them to broader issues that need fixing or can leave people with an oversimplified diagnosis without any resolve or ongoing treatment. Beyond that, these videos often undermine the great deal of education/training needed to adequately diagnose conditions in a highly subjective field. This isn't about hot takes; this is a conversation about exploring nuance within a complicated topic, and Amanda helps Kate identify what is helpful vs. harmful (and when it depends!) to better navigate her own headspace as she scrolls in the deep. S1 Ep 189All Too Kell

In anticipation of Red (TV), Kate reminisces briefly through the Red album and provides her (accidentally 40 minute) All Too Well dissertation (in a pre-Red TV world), reminiscing on what the song meant to her then and now. Then, Kate airs an episode she recorded with Kelly (her sister) in San Diego amidst a coyote scare. They discuss 90s TV like TGIF, SNICK, Hey Dude, Are You Afraid of the Dark, etc., then venture into casual questions like "how to avoid existential dread?" Then Kelly gives a life update in San Diego and shares her version of a once-in-a-lifetime Taylor Swift event (going to a Braves World Series game). They discuss the joy of doing things alone, the transplant dilemma of feeling out of sorts in a new place, the issue of never being satisfied in life or career, do you say "active" or "sometimes" about the gym on dating profiles, they trade for you pages, talk about van life, do a brief rif off, the list goes on. S1 Ep 184Latter-Day Paints

A deep DIYve. In this episode, Kate explores DIY blogging through the lens of LDS influencers that promote power tools as a tool for women's empowerment. Kate meanders through her history with home decor shows, discusses how she came to find this renovated girl boss messaging, then walks through the who/what/when/why of how some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints got heavily involved with blogging, and more specifically (per listener emails from church members) how DIY blogging is a clear extension of LDS members' religious-cultural values. Then, Kate discusses how there are distinctions in monetization methods that DIY bloggers often pursue. Some can be harmless/helpful, some often subtly promote a pyramid scheme, and some could be potentially dangerous in the pursuit of profit for their 'non-expert' construction tutorials that often circumvent input from professionals. S1 Ep 183183. Part 2: I Can't Believe It's Not Buttery! (with Amanda Montell)

This week, Kate sits down and chats with Amanda Montell, author of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism to discuss the LuLaRoe documentary from a culty and linguistic angle. They discuss a variety of topics surrounding the language and communication styles of Mark & DeAnn and how they were effective in coercing thousands of women to join their self-serving organization that had all the trappings of cult. They talk through some of Kate's cult-related questions, e.g. how did Mark & DeAnn have so much power over people? What distinguishes something well-meaning from something manipulative? What is the fine line between groups with shared interests and groups that become exclusive, coercive and restrictive? How can we be more discerning so we don't fall down a buttery slope? S1 Ep 182I can't believe it's not buttery! (LuLaRich Deep Dive)

This is part 1 of a 2-part deep dive about the Amazon Prime documentary LuLaRich, a series chronicling the rise and fall of the infamously moldy, egregiously unattractive, paper thin short-lived leggings empire, LuLaRoe. After learning this company is holy in more ways than one, Kate dives into a couple different angles she wanted to elaborate on following watching the documentary, the first being the relationship to her prior series about the "venn diagram" of exploitative sales pitches and how this relates to other predatory practices of self-help/cults/religions/etc. Beyond that, Kate digs a bit more into DeAnne's background, patriarchal influences, estranged sister, and then moves on to try and figure out what was the actual best case earning potential of this "once in a lifetime opportunity." After that, she uncharacteristically proceeds to do a lot of mental math and walks you through her discoveries as it relates to what she found out that could've really gone down with their inventory's demise after going through some of the paperwork related to their cargo shipments. A little heavy, a little light, every Kendall at the Met Gala needs their Kim shadow. Part 2 coming Thursday with Amanda Montell (author of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism), which will be a more specific discussion about how to spot culty tendencies and avoid getting ourselves involved in a situation that could turn into a slippery, nay, buttery, slope . S1 Ep 181One Hit Mumbler

This week starts with Kate sharing an update about how her birthday surprise turned out along with the weird coincidences and special moments that made her hopeful she's headed for Better Days. Relevant to the surprise, the first hour or so is a nostalgic snorkel covering carnivals, concerts, and 90s mumbly pop rock (feat. an intense argument for why the Goo Goo Dolls are the greatest), followed by an interview in the second hour with 3 very esteemed guests, Kate's husband's sisters Rachel, Claire, and Ally. Kate and her sisters-in-law cover a variety of pop culture topics, mostly about late 90s/early 2000s emo, punk, and pop alt rock artists and their ability to be considered "cool" or not, featuring a conversation surrounding perennial pop cultural punching bag: Nickelback. A funny and lighthearted episode all around featuring a random pocket of popular culture. S1 Ep 1809/9 Problems

Kate's got 9/9 problems and her birthday is one. Today is her bday and she decided to spend the workday with you meandering through some birthday-related thoughts, musings, and memories. From the heavier topics, e.g. the pressures we put on ourselves to be at a certain place in life, coping with the birthday blues, managing your own expectations, and why other people's parties look so fun to lighter fare, such as the good/better/best of childhood bday party gift giving and reading from crowdsourced stories that she collected last minute. She got WAY more responses than anticipated then ran out of time, so expect a second part bonus where she dives into listeners' longer form stories. All in all, she hopes we can relate to one another, realize it's ok to feel two ways about a birthday, and to go a little easier on ourselves, as the passage of time marked by these milestones can often make you feel us odds with what's far more important; you deserve being celebrated. S1 Ep 179Beth: A Week in the Life

This week, Kate experiments with the snorkel format by recording daily minisodes and threading them together (as opposed to a stream of consciousness in one sitting) to create a week in the life. She feels like she gets really into things but forgets about them near immediately, and this format is attempting to capture what she's thinking about on a daily basis and what pop culture/tv/tiktoks she's paying attention to in passing. In this episode, Kate takes on: -The Texas 6-week abortion ban (skip to minute 15 to get to lighter stuff, not comprehensive but an angle to consider for talking to people that think they can't be impacted) -Her personal war on pantries filled with dry goods outside of their original containers for aesthetically pleasing food storage organization porn -A needlessly intense review of Ted Lasso -Manifesting babes linking their menstrual cycle to the moon?? -Light venting about a lack of preparedness in OOTD videos -A low effort investigation into who invented the days of the week -What if biblical characters had housewives taglines? -Her concern for college students becoming influencers when we don't know the long term implications of building a career without a traditional skillset or education for passing fame -Donda/Kim & Kanye's symbolic marriage -Real Housewives of Beverly Hills/Did Erika Jayne know? -Kate's dream of naming OPI nail polishes or eyeshadow palettes Among other things. S1 Ep 178This Is Me Twi-ing (Twilight Deep Dive)

This week, Kate is joined by Cathy Peshek (@poorlittleitgirl) to deep dive the Twilight Saga. Twilight has experienced somewhat of an internet renaissance ever since all 5 movies arrived on Netflix in July. Unsurprisingly, these ageless vampires did not exactly age well, so Kate and Cathy both celebrate and lament elements of the books/movies; from loving them for what they were to understanding the more troubling themes that seem so obvious now. They discuss the standout themes from each movie, why Bella served as a vessel for the emotionally fragile, discuss pet peeves/plot holes, delve into crowdsourced questions from Instagram, and all-in-all, just thoroughly enjoy taking a supermassive black hole of a deep dive into this iconic moment in pop culture.
