50 years ago this week the Race Relations Act came into force. Lily Kwok left behind her family in China to come over to the UK after the Second World War. She was initially working as a maid but went on to open one of Manchester's first Chinese restaurants. Her granddaughter Helen Tse who now co-runs the Sweet Mandarin restaurant says Lily was an amazing woman. #BBCRace50

Local residents who live on Eva Street near the curry mile in Rusholme in South Manchester say their lives are being blighted by inconsiderate curry houses dumping rubbish and rotting food.

One of the country's most senior bishops has said that Britain has a moral imperative to accept refugees from conflicts in which it has participated. After a week in which the death toll of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean into Europe grew to 1,700 so far this year, the bishop of Manchester, David Walker, said there was a duty to treat the survivors with compassion.
