Good Omens, Barry Season 2 Wrap Up
EJim, A.Ron and Cecily team up to take on the end of the world as envisioned by Amazon Prime's Good Omens. Adapted from the novel of the same name by co-author Neil Gaiman himself, it offers a warm, funny, and human take on the Apocalypse, focusing on the unlikely friendship between a demon (David Tennant) and an angel (Michael Sheen) who have decided they like Earth like it is, thankyouverymuch, and team up to keep it that way. Then, Cecily and A.Ron talk about their thoughts on the conclusion of the sophomore season of HBO's Barry(00:26:45). Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
EJim and I are both long-time fans of Godzilla, and we're here to report that this here is a really great Godzilla... trapped in a really, really dumb film. Godzilla: King of the Monsters has never looked better, has never been more bad@ss, has never been a meaner lizard, the problem is the homo sapiens that keep interrupting the truly amazing kaiju action we're getting here. If you can find a dumber lot of heroes and villains in a major motion picture, we'd like to see them. Worse, there are zero stakes because apparently it's not possible for these morons to die unless they're faceless extras or it's the dramatically appropriate time for them to die, but again this film doesn't understand drama or tension, so that doesn't really work, either. This would be a really fun film to rip on and root for the monsters on a lazy Saturday with your best friends, but it ain't worth the time going out to see it. We'll hope for better next week with the X-Men as we get a first look at Dark Phoenix! This podcast is an abridged version of the full, spoiler-filled discussion available only to our club members. Chernobyl - Episode 4 - The Happiness of All Mankind
EHello, comrades! It's time once again to descend into the man-made hell of Chernobyl, now with 100% more puppy-murder! The deep irony of the episode's title, "The Happiness of All Mankind", underscores the misery of the people who were forced to evacuate, the soul and body destroying heroism of the soldiers and engineers doing the work that must be done, as well as the predicament of the people that have to decide between their principles and ethics and disobeying a political structure that can not only take your career and your life from you, but those of your friends and families. As we close the books on the immediate disaster mitigation and clean up, we look forward to what justice we can get for the victims and the world itself as we deal next week with the judicial and political fallout of Chernobyl. We got a lot of informed and professional feedback on the many questions we've been wrestling with on this podcast, but we were provided two documents in particular you might find interesting. First, a paper on how the "Iron Law of Oligarchy" applies even to democratic and open structures such as Wikipedia. Second, a specific example of the tyranny of Wikipedians in the form of a misguided-grammar Nazi. You may also be interested to read an analysis of the relative risks of nuclear power vs coal power from the The Lancetthat I mentioned in the podcast. Fleabag, Dead to Me, The Perfection
EMe, Cecily and Jim have some recommendations and thoughts for your weekend viewing! We rave about the nearly flawless two seasons of Fleabag we just saw on Amazon Prime (00:00:00), Jim gives a bit of a preview for Netflix's new dramedy Dead to Me (00:00:00), starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, and then... we get to our review of The Perfection (00:00:00). This is a movie that Jim walked out on. Twice. Yet people are loving this film. What gives? Cecily and me try to defend the film on it's merits, but the truth is it's a hot mess of a film that tries to get away with a lot it probably shouldn't be trying, and you're either up to seeing it or you're not. Aladdin (2019)
EIf you're wishing for a three-way review of Disney's latest live-action adaptation, Aladdin, then listener you're in luck. Wish granted. Cecily, Jim, and I went to see it tonight with appropriately low expectations, but were very pleasantly surprised at how much fun and energy the movie provided. Better, the script smartly adapted the original, improving it's pacing while also adding depth to Jafar's intrigue and Jasmine's character, making it smarter and more relatable to modern audiences. The Tomatometer is kinda brutal for Al and friends right now (59% as of this writing), so take our review with a grain of salt. And we're still skeptical of the long term viability of these live-action adaptations, but we feel like this movie is proof that they aren't necessarily doomed to be pointless wastes of time. Chernobyl - Episode 3 - Open Wide, O Earth
EJim and I have seen episode three of HBO's Chernobyl series, "Open Wide, O Earth", and are shaken by the graphic depiction of the Chernobyl first responders' last days. We get to see the horror from multiple perspectives, the victims themselves, the and the friends and family who struggle to cope with this strange manner of death and the danger it poses to them. Meanwhile as the Soviets manage to contain and stop the fire, we gear up for the long war ahead; to fully contain the death and destruction of Chernobyl it will require 750k lives and three years of sacrifice. Will they be up for the challenge? And will they solve the mystery of the reactor's destruction, so that it might never happen again? All this plus some light discussion on the relative merits of free market capitalism vs centrally planned economies in feedback. You know, kids stuff. Willow (1988)
EThe Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy reaches it's thrilling conclusion with a look at 1998's Willow. The brain child of one George Lucas, directed by protege Ron Howard, and starring the delightful Warwick Davis, Willow still struggles to this day to find an audience. It suffers from simultaneously being curiously dark for a family film, but far too simple, uncomplicated, and broad to hold much interest for adults. While it boasted some cutting edge special effects for our day, the best one might be the baby Elora herself, played by a suite of infants. It shouldn't be possible for a baby to be this winsome and charming, but there it is. This podcast is an abridged version of the full, spoiler-filled discussion available only to our club members. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
EJim and I take a belated look at the latest installment in the John Wick saga, Chapter 3: Parabellum. JW3:B, has some of the finest action sequences we've ever seen, but it's also rapidly approaching diminishing returns in terms of quantity over quality. We're all for combat innovations including insane knife work, horse and dog augmented combat, and up-armored adversaries, but there's only so many times you can watch Keanu kill a guy with a gun before you start checking your watch. With John Wick 4 looking to keep upping it's ante, is this momentum sustainable? We'll look forward to finding out! Catch-22, Fleabag, Muhammad Ali: What's My Name?
EJim, A.Ron and Cecily discuss their thoughts on the latest offerings from the gods of television. Catch-22 (00:00:00) - a new dark comedy/drama from Hulu based on the novel of the same name.Fleabag (00:22:50) - returning for it's second season for Amazon is this extremely funny off-beat comedy about a woman trying to get her life together starring the crazy talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge.Muhammad Ali: What's My Name (00:34.59) - a new sports documentary from HBO, about the famed boxer's life in and out of the ring with an emphasis on his civil rights and humanitarian work. Chernobyl - Episode 2 - Please Remain Calm
EJim and I strap on our lead shielding and check our dosimeters before doing a deep dive into the second installment of Chernobyl, the HBO miniseries about the doomed nuclear facility. In "Please Remain Calm", the stakes increase as the lives of over 60 million Europeans are threatened by the crisis, and decisions are made that will lead to the deaths of individuals to potentially save millions. Excalibur (1981)
EExcalibur is one of the most ambitious tellings of the legend of King Arthur. It's chock full of knights, castles, and excellent actors. Detective Pikachu (2019)
ENovice Pokemon Trainer A.Ron is joined by S Rank Trainer Cecily to break down the action in Detective Pokemon. We were both surprised at how straightforward a kids film this was. To be fair, we weren't expecting Deadpool out of a Ryan Reynolds' starring Pokemon film, but parents looking to be thrown an adult bone over the heads of their children are probably going to be disappointed. Still, it's relentlessly, almost threateningly cute, and the more into Pokemon you are the more you'll appreciate the universe and background details they're packing into the scene. Chernobyl - Ep. 1 - 1:23:45
EChernobyl is already one of the most fascinating and relevant disaster movies I can think of, and we're only one episode into it's five episode run. "1:23:45" does a great job of introducing us to the men and women that will be affected by the nuclear power plant's explosion, sets up the political dysfunction that will impede the increasingly desperate and heroic attempts to contain the environmental catastrophe, and visually and audibly highlight the dangerous, hellish conditions the rescue workers and plant technicians were forced to confront. Is the Chernobyl disaster a uniquely Soviet phenomenon? Could something like this happen in the West? And what lessons about a pervasive culture of lying and misinformation can we apply to our lives today? We hash out these questions and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. DragonHeart (1996)
EOMG! It's a movie with Sean Connery, David Thewlis, and DRAGONS? What could be better? I'll tell you what... A movie without Dennis Quaid. ANY movie without Dennis Quaid. EWe've got the whole crew together today, forming up like a TV-reviewing (and definitely the least rad) Voltron to tackle yet another Netflix original about piece about Ted Bundy, a powerful documentary on the fight to give power back to the people, a modern animated tale of the ups and downs of relationships and the final verdict on season two of American Gods. Reign of Fire (2002)
EThe next installment of Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy features Reign of Fire, a movie so-close-to-sort-of-kind-of-good that it lands squarely into the realm of "cheesy fun." Aside from Game of Thrones, no film or series has done more to advance the art of CGI dragons as Reign, and no other film even comes close in the coveted shirtless McConaughey vs. Bale category. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
EJim and I have seen the climax to a decade's worth of world building in the MCU, Avengers: Endgame, and would like to certify it 100% awesome. Sure, you might quibble with a few cameos you don't recognize, and the more you're capable of rolling with the "Rule of Cool" the more you'll appreciate the spectacle they're putting on screen. But it's hard to imagine any fan of superhero movies not respecting what an accomplishment this is; to get so many people across the globe to care about and invest in these characters through 20+ movies that they'll sit in the dark for 3+ hours laughing and crying with them. How does Marvel top this? Can't wait to find out. EJim, Cecily and A.Ron are here for a round table on Hulu's new comedy, Ramy, and the latest two episode of Starz, American Gods. We all found Ramy to be really funny as well as insightful, and if you've had to struggle with your religious identity with a strict upbringing (cough, cough) we're sure you'll relate to the material. Conan the Barbarian (1982)
ES2F2: Fantasy kicks off with Conan the Barbarian, a film that helped launch the career of one Arnold Schwarzenegger into the stratosphere. And sure, we can quibble with some of the sillier plot points happening in the margins, and some of the casting, and a lot of the hair and makeup, but Conan is a serious film with some great set pieces, an absolutely magnetic star, and it even manages to land a few points that approach the profound. Hellboy (2019)
EJim and I saw the reboot of Hellboy and it's the definition of a mixed bag. Jim thought the movie was bad, but I borderline loved it. I have no explanation for my critical disparity, and I can see the issues with plot and humor that Jim and others are expressing but... I've seen a helluva lot of worse movies this year get better reviews. It's a damn shame, because while I think everyone can agree that Harbour makes an excellent Hellboy, the movie isn't likely to get the sequel his casting deserves. Pet Sematary (2019)
EWe talk about the latest attempt at a Stephen King adaptation, Pet Sematary. The movie is genuinely scary and horrifying when it wants to be, unfortunately in our opinion they squander a lot of time and goodwill in the first act flailing about conceptually which keeps us from connecting with the characters and setting the way we should. But still, the family dynamics, endangered children, and a great Jon Lithgow performance does just enough to sell us when things that were better off left dead aren't. Captain Marvel (2019)
EWe have seen the latest Marvel super extravaganza, Captain Marvel, and come away with the suspicion that it's missing something from the usual Marvel formula. If anything, it feels DC-esque in the way it's attempting to shoe horn in a new, unknown super power into the MCU. Uninspired fights, plot twists that are seen for miles away, and lacking engaging supporting characters that give the main character emotional stakes, Captain Marvel is good, perhaps, but not great, and maybe that's overselling it. The Umbrella Academy / Lorena
EWe've seen The Umbrella Academy and Lorena, Netflix and Amazon originals respectively. The Umbrella Academy is a smart, fun take on the X-Men universe with some Noah Hawley DNA mixed in. Lorena is a four part documentary examining the 1993 dismembering case of Lorena Bobbitt. Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
EJim and A.Ron saw Alita: Battle Angel tonight, and declare it a mess, albeit a beautiful, groundbreaking one in terms of effects work. This feels like the first half of the third part of a movie trilogy; everything is mysterious, nothing makes sense, the world is being built hastily and right in front of our eyes, and the movie ends right at the beginning of what promised to be a kick ass third act. But if you want to see what state of the art CG looks like in 2019, this is a shining $170 million example. The Lego Movie 2 - The Second Part (2019)
EJim and A.Ron have seen The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and it's almost if not just as good as the first one. Father/son relational dynamics take a back seat to big bro/little sis dynamics for the sequel, but Everything Remains Awesome. This movie is bright, colorful, funny, inventive, and packs a lot of heart. Go see it unless your inner child is dead and your heart is gripped by icy black despair. At less than 4 hours, we both feel like it's worth just about everyone's time to check out. Polar (2019)
EJim and I have seen the new Netflix original movie, "Polar". Based on a graphic novel of the same name, "Polar" is an ultra-violent revenge flick combining elements from "John Wick", "Crank", and "Sin City" with an engaging and energetic performance from Mads Mikkelsen as an aging hitman. Unfortunately, it's also a tonal mess, careening from slap stick humor to gory horror and back again, never sure of when to take itself seriously and commit to a point of view. The Punisher - Season 2 Wrapup
EJim and I haven't finished The Punisher season 2 yet, but we've seen enough to tap out. Aquaman (2018)
EUnfortunately, while it is clearly the second best DCU film after Wonderwoman, in our opinion it's not nearly that good, and is still trying to play catch up to their more marvelous competition. Like a lot of these DC properties, it feels equally rushed and bloated, as if they stuffed three Aquaman movies into one. Glass (2019)
EWoof. Jim and I really, really wanted to like Glass, the sequel to the terrific Unbreakable and Split. And it should work. Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson, and Anya Joy Taylor are good, and James McAvoy does more incredible work as the Horde. But the script is just about the laziest damn thing we've ever seen. Tons of plotholes, characters succeeding not because of their brilliance but others' stupidity, and Shyamalan indulging the worst of his third act instincts. It's a genuine disappointment, ya'll.
