Jim and I saw Zombieland: Double Tap tonight, and we are prepared to give it a triple, quad, quint, or whatever amount of Tap required to put this series down for good, because baby... it's gone bad. We are pretty big fans of the original Zombieland, but it turns out they used up all the imagination, fun, and clever jokes in the first one. I will say that the house I saw the movie in was having a good time, and laughing at/with the movie, and at time of writing it's boasting a pretty respectable Rotten Tomato score. Jim and I went to see the Joker tonight, and it was intense, challenging, but also beautiful and engrossing look at mental illness and the sicknesses at the heart of our society. Director Todd Phillips gives us a plausible, believable, and terrifying Joker to inhabit a world that is set in a hazy late 70s period but the political landscape is very 21st century. We can see multiple ways this movie could be considered "dangerous", but we feel the most dangerous thing about it could be people ignoring the many cautionary tales it packs into it's run-time. The Deuce is under a lot of pressure in "Morta di Fame", as disease, drugs, greedy gangsters and corrupt politicians all angle to take a bite out of its inhabitants. It's hard to see how established players like Rudy, Vincent, and Paul are going to make it out okay, but there is a glimmer of hope that Frankie just might be able to survive by being to small time to worry about. Meanwhile on the West coast Lori is waking up to the fact that she's traded a pimp named Cici for one named Kiki. We went to see Chapter Two of Stephen King’s IT, and we were both kind of underwhelmed. We were both fans of the first installment, but unfortunately the great acting and interesting characterizations are undermined by hokey horror sequences and what feels like a lot of recycled material from Chapter One. We think it’s an okay film, not a very effective horror movie, and with the cast and material that’s pretty surprising. We went to go see Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw tonight, and it's awesome. You either love the F&F franchise or you don't, and if you love it like we love it this movie is going to satisfy. All the hallmarks are there; insane vehicular action, Loony Tunes meets Three Stooges approaches to violence, suspension of disbelief stretching feats of driving and other forms of derring doo. Maybe it's a tad too long, maybe they lost track of what time of day it was in the third act, but it doesn't matter. We hope they make a dozen more of these things. Frankly, we were prepared to be mildly disappointed and to cluck our tongues at the Mouse and wag our fingers at all of his hubris as we sat down to watch Toy Story 4. Nobody asked for this sequel. It was foolish to get this franchise out of the vault after you delivered an absolutely perfect trilogy with the most beautiful ending you could ask for. But you know what? They did it. Toy Story 4 can look it's predecessors square in the eye as it has just as much humor, heart, and a wonderful, emotionally rewarding finale. Not to mention it's the best looking Toy Story yet. Jim and I have seen the latest installment in the long running Men in Black franchise, Men in Black: International. And it's okay. It's fun and entertaining, largely because Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are fun and entertaining people who have an easy chemistry. The plot is twisty, but not very smart, and the whole thing just struggles to find the big red "hyperspace" button that would get it into orbit where it belongs. But if all you're looking for is a bit of 90s nostalgia in a forgettable summer flick package, Men in Black: International will do. Jim and I went to see the latest X-Men flick, Dark Phoenix. It's not as bad as it's Rotten Tomatoes rating would imply, but it's certainly not good. And it's unfortunately because once again a classic X-Men plotline is burnt (refried, in this case) and all-time great Magneto and Professor X performances by Fassbender and MacElvoy are wasted on a script with muddled characters and paper thin villains. Long time fans of the X-Men will enjoy some great stand alone moments with their favorite characters, and the core chemistry of Xavier / Magneto / Mystique work to get the film's emotional heart a brief jump. The final episode of HBO's Chernobyl, "Vichnaya Pamyat" derives it's title from the traditional prayer said at the end of an Eastern Orthadox funeral; "memory eternal". Our hope is that everyone who has watched this and will watch this in the years to come takes to heart this encomium, that we need to remember the cost of lies, the cost of taking our eye off our institutions and systems we setup to keep us safe and prosperous, because if you fail to do so the cost only becomes more dear. Jim and I have come to Deadwood at long last, to behold it in movie form. We've seen differing amounts, but we have a lot of esteem for David Milch's western epic, and we thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent this week at the old camp. We talk about our experiences with the show, how Justified informs our thoughts on Deadwood and vice versa, Milch's thoughts on mortality, and how amazingly the movie gave equal closure and tribute to it's legion of incredible characters.
