Fresh from an impressive college career at Purdue University and a couple of seasons in the NBA with Indiana and Milwaukee, Everette Stephens came out to Australia to play for the Newcastle Falcons in 1992 and lit up the league with his rim-rocking dunks and ability to fill the box score in every column. After two seasons he made the move to Geelong where he played alongside Cecil Exum, Adrian Branch, Daren Rowe and Simon Kerle where his son Kendall was born and much later followed his father's footsteps playing in the NBL. Across Stephens' three seasons in the NBL, he averaged 21.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 2.1 steals (34th all-time) in 77 NBL games. In his first NBL season, DJ Mitchell was a surprise addition to the Bullet's roster, earning a spot within the team's starting line-up through his ability to score against any opposition. Mitchell, who is the son of former NBL import Mike Mitchell who played for Gold Coast, Brisbane and North Melbourne in the 1990s, takes us through what it's been like playing in Australia and the impact his dad still has on the Queensland basketball scene. During his rookie season, he delivered a breakout game for the Bullets, early in the season against the defending champion Sydney Kings, finishing with a 20 point and 10 rebound double-double. Although the Bullets season was marred by continuous coaching changes, which Mitchell gives his thought on, his play continued to grow as the season progressed. Craig Moller grew up playing both basketball and football in Sydney, signing a scholarship with the Fremantle Dockers at 14 years of age. In December 2012, he was officially drafted by Fremantle in the 2013 rookie draft and spent two years in the AFL system before being delisted and returned to playing state league basketball, a pathway that led him to the NBL. Moller entered the league with the Sydney Kings under coach Andrew Gaze before moving to Melbourne United where he won an NBL championship in 2018. He returned to Sydney in 2020 and was a part of the Sydney Kings team that was forced to withdraw from the Grand Final series as a result of COVID-19, handing the title to the Perth Wildcats. Dwayne McClain played 105 career NBL games, averaged 25.4 points per game, finished third in MVP voting in 1993 and was a part of the All-NBL Teams in 1991-1993. He was the first NBL player to be sponsored by an international brand (Coca-Cola) and, along with Andrew Gaze, was the first NBL player to have his own signature shoe (with Reebok). Tyler Harvey entered the NBL by storm, taking the Illawarra Hawks to the semi-finals and finishing runner-up in MVP voting after a season where the team finished dead last. Since that time, he's consistently been among the league's highest scorers, and he's, without a doubt, one of the greatest shooters the league's ever seen. Tyler enters his fourth season with the Hawks and has averaged 18.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists since entering the league in 2021. Very few have accomplished more than NBL legend Mark Dalton by age 20. In that time, he had played for the Australian Boomers at the 1984 Olympics and averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a starter in the Canberra Cannon's second NBL championship. Dalton played seventeen seasons across five NBL teams. This included the Canberra Cannons, Geelong Cats, Sydney Kings, Brisbane Bullets and Wollongong Hawks, and his all-time numbers sit amongst some of the best to have ever done it. Ranking in the top 40 for games played and rebounds as well as sitting in the top 25 for total steals and blocks. Yet, he never played for the Boomers at the Olympics again. He says poor advice from AIS coaches stopped him from taking a scholarship from major US colleges, and his NBL journey saw him unceremoniously axed from multiple NBL teams. Chris Harriman played two seasons in the NBL, playing for both the Sydney Kings and the Hunter Pirates (runner-up in the 2004 rookie of the year award) before taking up an opportunity to coach college basketball. Since then, he's coached at some of the top college basketball programs, including Saint Louis, Nebraska, New Mexico and the University of Cal (Berkley), where he is an assistant coach to Mark Fox. While few may be aware of who Harriman is, many are familiar with his work. Five months ago, Cam Bairstow retired from basketball at the age of 31. The Melbourne Tigers left possibly the biggest imprint in Australian basketball history, winning four NBL championships in fifteen years (1993 to 2008) and being home to basketball royalty like Andrew Gaze, Lanard Copeland, Mark Bradtke and Chris Anstey. Al Westover, who was born in California and originally left the states to join the Tigers as a player during the 1970s, re-joined the team as a coach in 1992 and was a part of all four of the club's championship runs. Al, who left the Tigers after playing in one NBL season with the team, returned eight years later to assist head coach Lindsay Gaze, a partnership which lasted until 2005 when Lindsay retired, and Al was named head coach. In his first year as coach, Al not only won the NBL Coach of the Year Award but won the NBL championship with a re-tooled roster featuring Chris Anstey on his return from stints in the NBA and Europe. Two years later, Westover and Anstey won another NBL Championship, a feat that saw Westover become the first coach in NBL history to reach the Grand Final in each of his first four years as coach, resulting in two Championships and two Runners Up. Four NBL Championships and four runners-up later, Al was unceremoniously fired from his coaching role with the Tigers and never coached again in the NBL. Westover remains the second-winningest coach in NBL history (134-74 win-loss record). Topics include... Jacob Wiley joined the Adelaide 36ers as a replacement for Mitch Creek in 2018. His 'one and done' season saw him finish the year as one of the premier forwards in the league and fill the highlight reels with multiple posterizing dunks. Wiley averaged 12.3 points and 5 rebounds playing for then coach Joey Wright, who he credits with helping to shape his basketball career. After initially re-signing with Adelaide for another season, Wiley exercised his European out-clause in June 2019 to play with Spanish team Gran Canaria. He now plays for the Shiga Lakes in Japan's B.League, a team that also competes in the newly launched EASL (an Asian champions league). Tim Soares joins the Sydney Kings as one of their newest imports, and he's focused on being the best centre in the league and leading the team to back-to-back championships. He's a player who has taken an unusual journey to reach the NBL. With his mother and father, both professional basketball players who met while in Brazil, he developed his early game in Brazil (he is only the second NBL player ever to grow up in Brazil) before moving to the USA to play college basketball. With his family having a strong Christian faith, he chose to play at the little-known Master's University in California, an NAIA school, before nominating for the NBA Draft. Due to COVID-19 he was unable to participate in any pre-draft workouts for teams and ultimately wasn't selected in the 2020 NBA Draft. Since then, he's played in Turkey and Israel prior to signing a deal to play in Australia, which he hopes to use as a springboard to the NBA like former Brazilian and Sydney Kings star Didi Louzada. CJ Bruton is currently building his first NBL roster as an NBL head coach, and he joins Dan Boyce on the Aussie Hoopla podcast to talk through his process and how he's managed to land some big names like Robert Franks and Antonious Cleveland. Bruton took over as the team's head coach just prior to last season's tip-off, with the roster having already been finalized by former 36ers GM Jeff Van Groningen and Coach Connor Henry. Aaron Fearne was head coach of the Taipans for nine seasons and led the team to three postseason berths. Fearne was named the NBL Coach of the Year in 2015. Prior to the 2018/19 season, the Taipans announced that Fearne would not return as head coach and shortly after he moved to the US to take up a role as an assistant coach at the University of Charlotte. Last week Jacob Jackomas was announced as the new Illawarra Hawks new coach, replacing his mentor Brian Goorjian. With Goorjian announcing he will be coaching the Bay Area Dragons based in the Philippines Jackomas will take full control with the Hawks and look to take them one step further after their semi-final loss to the Sydney Kings. Jacob Jackomas previously acted as Goorjian's assistant coach for more than a decade, his extensive coaching resume includes stints in the NBL, China and the Australian Boomers program over the past 6 years. Ben Knight has been announced as the 2022 winner of the Sydney Kings' Ring of Honour award. The fan and member-voted award will be presented officially at Sunday's massive clash at Qudos Bank Arena against the Illawarra Hawks. Rob Beveridge ticked off a bucket list item when he was named head coach of the Australian Boomers and guided the team to a 3-0 record in February's FIBA World Qualifiers held in Japan. The team, NBL development players and European talent faced a gruelling quarantine process and only two days or preparation for the tournament which Bevo gives his insights into the experience. Beveridge added this achievement to a resume that features a Paralympics silver medal from 2000, an assistant coaching role with the Boomers at the 2004 Olympics, coaching Scotland at the Commonwealth Games 2018 and the two medals won at the junior World Championships in 2003 (gold medal) and 2019 (bronze medal). Beveridge has spent the past three seasons coaching New Zealand's Southland Sharks and he also shares some of his knowledge of the league and why the league is more popular than ever before. Whyalla born and bred Chris Blakemore began training with the Adelaide 36ers in 1990 before spending two seasons at the Australian Institute of Sport and signing a rookie contract with the team in 1993. He played three seasons with the 36ers (1993-1995), a period where the team saw a young core of Blakemore, Brett Maher, Scott Ninnis and Brett Wheeler develop into a playing group that ushered in a new era of success in Adelaide. Blakemore would win Rookie of the Year in his first season and the league's Most Improved Player in his second season. Jayson Wells played three seasons in the NBL (2001-2003) with the Canberra Cannons and Cairns Taipans before embarking on a professional basketball journey that saw him play internationally for 13 years. His playing career saw him spend time in Argentina, Dubai, Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Sweden and Ukraine. Young Filipino talent Kai Sotto has signed a multi-year deal with the Adelaide 36ers this season and after missing the teams first four games made his NBL debut against the Cairns Taipans this week. Guy Molloy has called it quits on coaching the Melbourne Boomers WNBL team after almost a decade with the club. Molloy will move to New Zealand to take on a dual role which includes coaching the New Zealand Tall Ferns (National Women's team) and coach the Wellington Saints in the NZNBL. Molloy has spent 32 years coaching at a national level in Australia which included stints with The Australia Women's national team, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne in the WNBL and for the men spent time in the NBL coaching both the Cairns Taipans and South Dragons. It's fair to say no other coach has the experience Molloy has at coaching both sexes at a national level and he joins the podcast to chat with Dan Boyce on the differences between coaching men and women and the lessons he's learnt from coaching in our national leagues. Isaac Burton played 96 games in the NBL over four seasons with both the Sydney Kings and the Newcastle Falcons. A defensive ball hawk who excited the crowd with flashy dunks was a fan favourite in Sydney and the NBL during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Burton became embroiled in a point-shaving scandal during his time playing basketball (and baseball) at Arizona State University, a moment in history that has recently been made into a Netflix documentary called "Bad Sports". The documentary focuses primarily on the players at the centre of the ASU scandal, namely Stevin "Hedake" Smith and Burton, but it also zooms out to lay bare the real villain in their story: the NCAA, which doled out stipends so insufficient that athletes came to see point-shaving as their only means of survival. The Perth Wildcats announced the surprise signing of exciting import Vic Law for the 2021/22 NBL season. While many hoops tragics were convinced Law was likely to be in Brisbane for a second season, Law instead headed west and will look to pair with NBL MVP Bryce Cotton and help the Wildcats secure their eleventh NBL championship. Last season Law averaged 18.8 points, 8.4 rebounds per game (fourth in NBL), 2.6 assists and 0.6 steals before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in his first NBL season in the NBL. The injury kept him out of action for five months but once he had rehabbed the injury he was offered the opportunity to play for the Los Angeles Lakers at the recent NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Law averaged 10.0 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Lakers NBA Summer League team, including a game-winning performance against the Clippers where he came up with the clutch triple and defensive play to seal the win. This month the Perth Wildcats announced former Director of Scouting at Philadelphia 76ers Danny Mills would join the team as General Manager of Basketball Operations. Mills' primary role will be to oversee the basketball department, with a particular focus on recruitment, talent identification and player pathway strategy and development. Mills was born and raised in Perth and played juniors for both Wanneroo Wolves and Willetton Tigers. He was an eight-time WA State Team representative, a Perth Wildcats training squad member in 2002-03 and played college basketball at Oregon Tech from 2004-07. Andre Moore joins the show to talk about his NBA and NBL career as well as what's happening on the Australian Basketball scene today. Moore was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the 2nd round of the 1987 NBA Draft. In 10 games with the Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks, he averaged 2.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Moore then embarked on a career in Australia when he signed with the Brisbane Bullets in 1990 and led them to that year's NBL Grand Final before losing to the Perth Wildcats. His teammates on Brisbane included fellow Americans Derek Rucker and Leroy Loggins. Moore's outstanding play saw him selected to the 1990 All-NBL Team after he averaged 26.9 points, 12.6 rebounds, and two blocks per game while shooting 61.1% from the field. After playing for the Bullets, Moore spent time with the Hobart Devils (1995) and Cairns Taipans (1999-01). Topics include...
