The film takes an in depth look at the 240 mile, 24 hour bicycle race known as the Day Across Minnesota. Although the race may be grueling the film is an eye opening look into the people and the impact this race has had since its first ride in 2021. Today on Art Beat, we take a look at the 18th annual Frozen River Film Festival and sit down with local filmmaker Mary Farrell to talk about her film, Healthy Lake Winona, which was shown at this year’s festival. The film follows the efforts of local organizers dedicated to cleaning up Lake Winona. The Healthy Lake Winona committee was formed in 2014 by a group of local citizens in an effort to improve the quality of the lake. In the film, Farrell documents the groups efforts to address problems with the lake including runoff, invasive species and the goose population. The Frozen River Film Festival is a yearly event showcasing many films including local filmmakers focusing on community-based documentaries. His current show, Paintings, draws from work he made during his 2022-23 sabbatical. Recently the iDMAa held a conference and exhibition here in Winona and we were there check out all the weird digital art being presented. Two of the artists that we spoke with, Jennifer Gradecki and Derek Curry, had a video piece in the exhibition titled: Infodemic. Both artists are also assistant professors at Northeastern University in Boston and their piece Infodemic deals with the way that misinformation spreads through todays social and digital media while gaining traction as truth. How do we discern what is truth and what is fiction in todays world? Well, Jennifer and Derek are here to help us figure that out.
