I know a lot of people were hesitant about showing up because a lot of the bigger companies weren't going to have a presence. Joining me today is Michael Monsivais. Michael is a welder for the Pile Drivers Union in Southern California and has an amazing story. He spent much of his youth and adult life incarcerated in Maximum Security Penitentiaries because he was on a bad path and made some poor choices. Micheal has one hell of a come back story, during his last prison sentence he built a welding school inside of the prison to teach inmates a skilled trade and prepare them for release back into society. Micheal founded a 501c3 company to help train inmates and get them hired once they have paid their debt to society. This mans story is the epitome of giving back and helping others get into welding. In todays episode, I am talking about the Fundamentals of SMAW. Im giving everyone a crash course into my favorite process. I get a lot of questions about what process to use, when to use it and the advantages and disadvantages of different processes so I figured I'd do a series of different recordings on the various processes. This is just the first episode in the series, I plan to do SMAW electrodes in the near future and then work into GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW and possibly cover some of the thermal cutting processes as well. So, awhile back my buddies Brandon Parrot and Peyton Evans of Sum Dum Welder Apparel told me I should reach out to their former welding instructor Scottie Smith. Scottie is a Navy Veteran Welder and Second Generation Welding Instructor. Today's guest is Bill Komlos, Bill is an English major, turned welder, turned welding engineer and now develops some of the crazies welding procedures, for some of the coolest projects out there. Bill has an amazing story, he's worked on all kinds of military projects, C B and I, Aerospace and most recently created a welding procedure to weld a man-made metal that had been installed on the Mars rover Perseverance that will be landing on Mars, this Thursday to collect all kinds of data about the planet.
