Ep 101The Role of Technology and Digital Health in Driving Value-Based Healthcare | A CES 2024 Event Coverage Conversation with Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH, President, American Medical Association
Guest: Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH, President, American Medical Association [@AmerMedicalAssn]On Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/doctorjesse/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/DoctorJesseMD____________________________Host: Marco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society PodcastOn ITSPmagazine | https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli____________________________Episode NotesHey everyone, it's Marco Ciappelli here, and I am delighted to bring you an episode of the Redefining Society podcast that is dedicated to the upcoming CES conference in Las Vegas. CES is known as the place where you see the future, and technology plays a vital role in shaping that future. Today, I want to explore how technology fits into the societal structure, particularly in the healthcare industry.I am thrilled to have Jesse Ehrenfeld, the president of the American Medical Association, joining me on the show. He will be hosting a panel at CES on enabling the new era of value-based care for digital health. But before we dive into the topic, let's understand what value-based care really means.Value-based care focuses on the quality of care, the performance of healthcare providers, and the patient experience. It prioritizes what patients value the most, and technology plays a crucial role in achieving this. Through the use of digital health tools and AI, we can enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and patient engagement, ultimately delivering value-based care. One of the key benefits of technology in healthcare is telehealth. Virtual consultations save time and eliminate the frustration of traffic and long waits at the doctor's office. Patients can interact with their healthcare providers from the comfort of their own homes, making healthcare more convenient and accessible. However, the adoption of new technologies comes with challenges. Physicians want to know if the tools actually work, if they are covered by insurance, what happens in case of failures, and how they integrate into their practices. We need to ensure that the tools meet their expectations and address these concerns. From a patient's perspective, value and success are measured by factors such as convenience, quality of care, and cost. Telehealth and other digital health tools provide patients with a more satisfying experience, saving them time and delivering higher quality care. Lowering out-of-pocket costs is also a priority, as healthcare expenses continue to rise. While we often associate AI with cutting-edge advancements, it is already embedded in healthcare operations behind the scenes. AI-powered tools are streamlining supply chain management, scheduling, and insurance processes. In research, AI is accelerating drug discovery and improving diagnostic accuracy.Events like CES play a crucial role in driving innovation in digital health. They provide a platform for entrepreneurs, innovators, and healthcare professionals to connect and collaborate, ensuring that the technologies developed meet the needs of patients and practitioners.I hope you find this glimpse into the role of technology and digital health in driving value-based healthcare insightful. If you want to learn more about this topic, make sure to check out Jesse Ehrenfeld's panel, "Digital Health Enabling the New Era of Value-Based Care," at CES.I am excited to record and share these episodes about the evolving healthcare landscape, and I look forward to bringing you more discussions on the intersection of technology and society in the future. That's all for now. Stay tuned for our next episode, and until then, take care!____________________________Catch all of our CES 2024 event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/ces-2024-las-vegas-usa-event-coverageWatch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube ChannelCES 2024 Las Vegas playlist: 📺 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTcuvjsP6zvFyZkL7z2D8WZRedefining Society Podcast with Marco Ciappelli playlist: 📺 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9ITSPmagazine YouTube Channel: 📺 https://www.youtube.com/@itspmagazineBe sure to share and subscribe!____________________________ResourcesDigital Health: Enabling the New Era of Value Based Care: https://www.ces.tech/sessions-events/dhth/dhth02.aspxLearn more about CES 2024: https://www.ces.tech/____________________________For more CES 2024 Event Coverage visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/ces-2024-las-vegas-usa-event-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/sponsor-the-itspmagazine-podcast-network Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 91Book | Game Changer: How Strategic Pricing Shapes Businesses, Markets and Society | A Conversation with with Jean-Manuel Izaret | Redefining Society with Marco Ciappelli
Guest: Jean-Manuel Izaret, AuthorOn Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/izaret/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/izaret____________________________Host: Marco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society PodcastOn ITSPmagazine | https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli_____________________________This Episode’s SponsorsBlackCloak 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbcwebBugcrowd 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspbgcwebDevo 👉 https://itspm.ag/itspdvweb_____________________________Episode IntroductionIn a world where economic dynamics intricately intertwine with our daily lives, understanding the nuances of strategic pricing becomes imperative. This is the central theme of the latest episode of the "Redefining Society Podcast," where we engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Jean-Manuel Izaret, co-author of "Game Changer: How Strategic Pricing Shapes Businesses, Markets, and Society."The episode begins with a reflection on the often-overlooked significance of pricing in technology and societal contexts. We question whether strategic pricing truly belongs in discussions about technology and its societal impact, only to discover its undeniable relevance. As Izaret points out, pricing strategies do more than just set the cost of goods and services; they shape consumer behavior, influence market trends, and even hold the power to dictate the course of society.Izaret, with a rich background in economics and behavioral science, brings a unique perspective to the table. Drawing from his extensive experience in consulting and pricing strategy formulation, he discusses the evolution of pricing from a mere transactional element to a strategic tool capable of influencing societal outcomes. The concept of the Strategic Pricing Hexagon, introduced in the book, serves as a gateway to understanding how strategic decisions regarding pricing can lead to stronger growth and improved financial performance for businesses. The conversation delves deeper into the psychological and sociological aspects of pricing. We explore how prices affect our purchasing decisions, the value we assign to products, and even our perception of brands. Izaret uses relatable examples, like the luxury branding of Gucci or the dynamics of the tipping culture, to illustrate these points. These examples highlight the complex relationship between pricing, consumer expectations, and societal norms.Furthermore, the episode addresses the global impact of pricing strategies. In a world increasingly interconnected, a pricing decision in one part of the globe can have ripple effects elsewhere. This global perspective is crucial in understanding the role of strategic pricing in shaping not just local markets but the global economic landscape. As the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear that strategic pricing is not just about numbers and profit margins. It's about understanding human behavior, societal values, and market dynamics. It's a tool that, when wielded wisely, can contribute to the greater good, promoting sustainable and equitable growth.By the end of the episode, listeners are left with a newfound appreciation for the power of pricing. It's no longer a dry, technical topic relegated to economics textbooks. Instead, it emerges as a vibrant, dynamic field that intersects with technology, society, and human psychology, influencing our lives in profound ways.📖 About the Book:The right pricing strategy can change the entire trajectory of a business, a market, and even society at large. To help you create your best pricing strategy efficiently and confidently, two leaders from BCG are introducing fresh perspectives on pricing that take you far beyond the realm of mind-numbing numbers. In their new book Game Changer: How Strategic Pricing Shapes Businesses, Markets, and Society, Jean-Manuel Izaret and Arnab Sinha simplify and clarify pricing strategy by integrating its many frameworks and concepts into seven distinct pricing games, each with its own proven tools, rules, forces, and structures. To help you pick the right game and play it well, Izaret and Sinha have developed the Strategic Pricing Hexagon, a tool refined through years of testing, iteration, and adaptation. The Hexagon is your portal to a business world where stronger growth and better financial performance come from a set of strategic pricing decisions, not endless myopic quests for optimal prices. But more than that, the Hexagon will change the way you think about and talk about pricing. The current conversation around pricing – as expressed through economics textbooks, Excel spreadsheets, political discourse, and educated guesswork – makes it easy to believe that pricing is nothing more than a technical, tactical and, for most people, boring game of numbers. Game Changer changes that conversation bysharing stories and research that bring the Hexagon and its seven pricing games to life. With research from BCG’s Bruce Henderson In

In our latest episode of Redefining Society Podcast, we dive into the heart of music's metamorphosis over the past four decades, spurred by tech, societal shifts, and, of course we throw in the mix the undeniable power of analog nostalgia.Music's journey from casette and vinyl records to streaming services like TikTok has not only changed how we consume tunes but has also transformed the very fabric of the industry. The conversation between Marco, Carey, Rafael, and Sean unfolds, revealing a different perspectives on the subject. The allure of YouTube residencies, the charm of live performances by icons like Pearl Jam, Iron Maiden, Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, and the question of authenticity in the era of blockbuster concerts are all dissected with passion and insight.Rafael's contrast between TikTok's influence and the traditional music giants sparks a debate on the essence of entertainment. Is the lavish production of today's concerts compensating for a lack of substance, or is it enhancing the experience? Marco's thought-provoking take on the Sphere—a venue that blurs the lines between a music event and a theatrical extravaganza—invites listeners to ponder if music alone can still captivate the hearts of a modern audience. The interplay of marketing, celebrity culture, and the need for meme-worthy content in the music industry are scrutinized. Taylor Swift's brand synergy and the commercialization of everything from stadium tours to "Swifty Sauce" are testament to the evolving landscape where music, brand, and technology may get confused with one another. As the conversation shifts to U2's influence on the Sphere's success, questions arise about the power of visual effects and whether they can make or break a music event. Sean's commentary on the potential of lesser-known bands to draw crowds in such a venue touches on the stark realities of brand power in music. In the end, the episode not only reminisces about the rebellious anthems of the '80s but also contemplates the future of live music. It's a reflective journey that connects dots between the societal impact of technological advancements and the eternal love for music that resonates through generations._____________________________Resources ____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This is a short, very, very short, Halloween story for you. Keep it a secret. Do not share it. Not mention it. Do not even think about it if you want. Have a chance to keep your soul and survive the eyes of the AI.The StoryIn the desolation the sky itself seemed to warp and twist, becoming a canvas for empty matrix patterns. Ethereal eyes floated high above, casting haunting glows over the town below. The watchers, always observing, always judging, and never breathing. The streets lined with twisted trees, their branches heavy with jack-o'-lanterns glowing of a light imbued with binary code. Their faces seemed to flicker and shift, revealing glimpses of the countless souls whose data had been harvested.Shadowy, emptied, citizen figures moved through the streets; parched digital egos, mere silhouettes of what was flesh and blood. Their faces, devoid of emotion, were a testament to a life under ceaseless surveillance.Amidst this world of shadows and whispers, freedom remained a dream, and when Eleanor noticed the glitches in the matrix, that dream, for many, became hope. The eyes in the sky, for all their omnipotence, had blind spots, biases, and the very human imperfect humanity that created them and the now they feasted on.But Eleanor disappeared. The only trace left of her was her shadow laying on the ground and a chilling note:"Your thoughts could be next... but do we even care?"- The EndThis short story was brought to you by what you could consider the mortal remain of a human cognition and his faithful AI companion. Who is who, and what is what, is up to you to decide.Note:Very quickly written and illustrated by Me and AI - mostly written by me cause AI ain't that good at #writing these things anyway. The illustration? Well that is another story, maybe for another time. The reading? It's Marco Ciappelli from the Redefining Society Podcast. You know, there's this buzzing feeling I get every time we're on the verge of another technological evolution; it's a mix of thrill and trepidation. And right now, it’s all about Generative AI.In today's world, keeping up with the pace of societal change is like trying to paint a masterpiece on a canvas that's constantly shifting shapes. Just when I feel I've grasped the essence of a topic, it evolves, leaving me to start all over. It's as if our societal canvas has turned into this dynamic, perpetually morphing entity. But isn't that what makes our era so exciting? In my recent podcast episode, I had the pleasure of connecting with Justin "Hutch" Hutchens, a prominent figure who's been deep in the trenches of AI, especially at its intersection with risk and cybersecurity. Hutch, as he's fondly known, has an intriguing perspective on where AI is heading and the potential societal implications, particularly the rapid advancements in Generative AI.Our conversation touched on everything from the pace of AI innovations to the potential societal impacts and the looming regulatory challenges. One of the most striking revelations was the sheer speed at which AI is advancing. If you think we've seen rapid evolution so far, brace yourself. The horizon promises even faster, more profound shifts. With companies competing to outdo each other in AI capabilities, where does that leave us, the people and societies that will live with the outcomes? The challenge, as we discerned, is not just about the technology but also about the ethical, philosophical, and societal considerations. While we can't predict the future with certainty, discussions like these are crucial. They allow us to ponder, prepare, and perhaps steer the direction in which we're headed.Join me in this riveting exploration as we dive deep into the societal impacts of Generative AI._____________________________Resources ____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. I'm your host, Marco Ciappelli, and as usual, we're diving deep into the interplay between our past, present, and the anticipated future. Missing in action today are our usual suspects, Sean and Raphael, but no worries, the conversation is as gripping as ever!In this digital age, where our every move, like, and share is broadcast for the world to see, we find ourselves pondering a critical question: What does privacy truly mean today? Is it the same privacy we remember from our X-generation days, or has the explosion of technology and global connectedness reshaped its very essence? It feels as though we're caught in a never-ending cycle of sharing and oversharing, with the consequences of our online actions often lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce when least expected.Joining the discussion today is Carey D'Souza, a technology expert who's no stranger to the complexities of the digital realm. Together, we dissect the phenomenon of public lives in an age where posting our personal moments has become second nature. But, as we dive deeper into the rabbit hole, the contradictions surface. We crave privacy while simultaneously feeding the very platforms that diminish it. And with every click, share, and post, we inadvertently scribble away a bit more of what used to be our personal narrative. Is our understanding of privacy merely a relic of the past? Or do we need to redefine its parameters for a society that's drastically different from a mere two decades ago? As we traverse the timelines—from the nostalgia of analog to the pulsating beats of the digital age—let's uncover the surprising parallels and disconcerting divergences that shape our understanding of private versus public. So, whether you're a dreamer, a realist, or simply a curious soul yearning to understand the shifting sands of our digital society, this episode promises insights, revelations, and perhaps a few "aha" moments. Sit back, relax, and let's explore the evolving definition of privacy in our digital world.Ready to embark on this enlightening journey? I'm your host, Marco Ciappelli, and this series aims to explore the complexities of technology, health, and society. Today, I'm joined once again by Dr. Bruce Y. Lee, an expert in systems modeling, digital health, and a Professor of Health Policy at CUNY. The title of our series might sound like a tongue-in-cheek joke, but it's a guiding compass. Carbon for organic life, Silicon for technology, and Cell for health—each of these elements comes together in a conversation that aims to redefine how we perceive society. Our discussion today turns to the subject of personalized health, a topic we often underestimate. Bruce, who just spoke at a conference sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, delves into the myriad of variables that play into personalized health. From metabolism to social structures, every person is a sum of complex factors that dictate their health outcomes. And while we may recognize the importance of personalized nutrition and tailored health recommendations, Bruce highlights a crucial point: no single diet or lifestyle change is a one-size-fits-all solution.Dr. Lee dives into the limitations of general health recommendations. Sure, everyone should aim for good sleep and avoid smoking, but what about the nitty-gritty details that are tailored just for you? This is where artificial intelligence (AI) could shine, by collecting and synthesizing data on our behaviors, physiology, and even our microbiomes to offer more individualized health guidelines."Health is can be very personal," Bruce notes. The reason one person's diet might work wonders but make another gain weight is due to the vast differences in our internal systems. "It takes a lot of time to really figure someone out," he adds, emphasizing that many factors are often overlooked—such as the unique microbiomes each of us hosts. And let's be honest; it's not exactly common practice to discuss your gut health over a coffee chat with friends. In essence, the realm of personalized health is not just a growing field but a necessary one, especially as we look to navigate the complexities of modern life. For example, the challenges of describing your ailments to a doctor accurately—or even understanding what lifestyle adjustments could be beneficial for your well-being—are hurdles that AI might help us leap over. So, as we continue to weave through the labyrinthine relationships between technology, health, and society, this episode serves as a great reminder. Personalized health isn't just the future; it's a critical present that we need to understand and embrace.Cheers, and until next time!_____________________________ResourcesPHICOR: https://www.phicor.org/AIMINGS: https://www.phicor.org/aimings____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 76Navigating the Privacy Maze: Mozilla’s Vehicle Privacy Report Sparks a Drive | A BlackCloak Brand Story with Chris Pierson and Ingrid Gliottone
The recent report by Mozilla, shedding light on the privacy concerns around modern vehicles, struck a chord. Notably, every car brand reviewed, including behemoths like Ford, Volkswagen, and Toyota, flunked the privacy test. This revelation steered a fascinating conversation with Chris Pierson and Ingrid Gliottone from BlackCloak during a brand story recording for the Redefining Society podcast. Our focus veered towards the lurking privacy and security issues tied to the modern, tech-savvy vehicles we so casually entrust with our data. The modern car is no longer just a mode of transport—it's a smart gadget, a data hub on wheels. But as the wheels spin, so does the reel of our personal information, weaving into the vast web of data, ready for harvest by not just the car makers, but a string of 'they' – the infotainment system providers, app developers, network providers, and possibly cyber rogues. The conversation took a deeper dive as Chris, the CEO of BlackCloak, elucidated the firm's mission—shielding corporate executives and key personnel from personal cyber threats that could ricochet back to the corporations. The Mozilla report is an alarm bell, underscoring the high time to separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of what data is essential for functionality and what merely serves as a gold mine for advertisers or a hunting ground for cyber-attackers. This blend of privacy and security, or the lack thereof, is a cocktail we are forced to sip, as Ingrid pointed out the lack of clarity presented to buyers at the point of sale concerning the privacy policies tied to these vehicles. The promise of tech advancements in vehicles is dazzling—better shocks for off-roaders, safety features to prevent accidents during a sudden snooze, and so on. Yet, as Chris highlighted, there's a dark side. Some policies mentioned collecting data about one's sex life and genetic information— a far cry from the basic expectations of privacy. As the conversation with BlackCloak unrolled, the blend of excitement and concern was palpable. The question now is not about halting the march of technology but steering it towards a path where privacy and security are not the passengers but co-drivers.The findings from the Mozilla report and insights from BlackCloak are not just food for thought, but a call to action. It is crucial to reckon with the reality of the modern-day vehicles doubling as data hubs and to steer the conversation towards a road where transparency, consent, and security are the landmarks. I urge you to dive into BlackCloak's offerings to explore how they are redefining the security landscape, ensuring the privacy and security of your personal digital realm, including that computer on wheels parked in your driveway. It's Marco Ciappelli of the 'Redefining Society Podcast', and today we have an episode that promises a whole lot of geeking out, pondering, and some classic bantering. The intersection of technology, cybersecurity, and society has never seemed so alive, and I'm excited to navigate it with you. Now, if you've been here before, you'd remember the brilliant Matthew Rosenquist. Well, he's back, always giving me a hard time, but hey, it’s all in good spirit! We've exchanged a few interesting jabs on LinkedIn recently, and that’s kind of what led us here. It's amazing how online conversations can blossom into profound discussions, isn’t it?And speaking of which, Sean Martin decided to crash our little party today. Though he claims he’s here just to join Matthew in poking fun at me, I know he's got a treasure trove of insights from his three decades in tech and cybersecurity. So, welcome, Sean! Hope you’re ready to redefine some societal norms with us.Alright, so what's today's big question? Well, remember how ITSP Magazine started at that unique crossroad of cybersecurity and society? We've expanded since then, encompassing the larger realm of technology. The connections are becoming denser, and the implications? Oh boy, they're growing by the day. And then there’s AI. We can't really sidestep it anymore, can we? It's here, evolving, and redefining our societal landscape.Matthew had a speaker event recently about cybersecurity and AI. I thought, why not pull him and Sean into a room and unravel this puzzle? Between Matthew's forward-thinking perspectives and Sean's vast experience, we're bound to touch upon some hard-hitting truths. So today, we're connecting the dots, discussing AI's role in the future of cybersecurity, and diving into its implications on our society. We’ll discuss the tech side, of course, but I’m especially intrigued about its potential for social engineering. I mean, is AI's most significant threat the way it can manipulate us humans because of our inherent gullibility? There's so much ground to cover. I can’t promise we’ll have all the answers, but hey, it's the journey and discussion that counts. So, buckle up! It's time to redefine, muse, and maybe even challenge some of our preconceived notions. I'm your host, Marco Ciappelli, and today we're diving deep into a topic that's not just about technology, but also about geopolitics, economics, and the very fabric of our global society. If you've been following this channel, you know we explore the intersection of technology, cybersecurity, and society. We don't just look at the bits and bytes; we look at the bigger picture—the societal and human implications of the tech world we live in. Sometimes we get philosophical, sometimes we get speculative, but we always aim to get you thinking.Today, we have a special guest, Bill Echikson, a Senior Fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis, or CEPA for short. Bill brings a wealth of knowledge not just in tech policy but also in how technology intersects with geopolitics. We're going to talk about a subject that's making headlines but is often misunderstood: the global semiconductor industry and its geopolitical ramifications, particularly concerning China. Why semiconductors, you ask? Well, these tiny chips are the building blocks of modern technology. From your smartphone to national defense systems, semiconductors are the unsung heroes—or perhaps the hidden puppet masters—of our digital age. And right now, there's a sort of 'chip war' going on, a struggle for control and dominance in this crucial sector. We'll be referencing a recent article from CEPA titled "Camp David Pact is About Defense — And Tech," which discusses a new security agreement between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea. The pact aims to limit China's access to advanced technology that could have military applications. But as we'll discuss, the implications go far beyond just military concerns. So, whether you're a tech enthusiast, a policy wonk, or just someone who wants to understand the world a little better, this episode is for you. We're going to explore how technology isn't just a tool but a force that shapes economies, influences politics, and impacts human lives on a grand scale._____________________________ResourcesCamp David Pact is About Defense — And Tech: https://cepa.org/article/camp-david-pact-is-about-tech-and-defense/____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Today, we are diving into a topic that is not just crucial but also ethically challenging—how those who work in the tech industry can and should approach ethics in their daily practice. Our guide in this intellectual journey is Marc Steen, a senior research scientist at TNO in The Netherlands. Marc is an expert in Human-Centred Design and Value-Sensitive Design, with a strong focus on the responsible innovation and applied ethics of technology. He asks the questions that many of us perhaps hesitate to ask—especially when it comes to the ethics behind algorithms and AI systems. With an extensive background in both scholarly and popular writing, Marc aims to push the boundaries of ethical discourse in technology. Now, why is this important? As we engage more and more with technology, its repercussions echo louder and louder through the hallways of our societal norms, affecting our collective values, freedoms, and even democracy itself. So, when we talk about tech, we're not just talking about a tool or a service; we're discussing a societal force that shapes our daily lives.Marc's recent book, "Ethics for People Who Work in Tech," serves as a roadmap for professionals in the tech industry. Whether you are a computer scientist, a software developer, or even someone involved in policy-making, this book aims to empower you to think ethically. It provides a practical, three-step iterative approach for integrating ethics into projects and uses four distinct ethical perspectives to evaluate outcomes. The ultimate goal? To design and use technologies that contribute to a just society—a society where people can truly live well together.Today, we are going to explore these ideas deeply. We'll question the uneasy aspects of technology that most shy away from. We'll explore how we can achieve a state where innovation isn't just about creating the new and the powerful, but also about ensuring fairness, freedom, and communal well-being.So sit back, and let's embark on this philosophical inquiry into the ethics of tech. Because, if technology is shaping our society, it's our moral imperative to ensure that it shapes it for the better. Stay with us._____________________________About the BookThis book is for people who work in the tech industry—computer and data scientists, software developers and engineers, designers, and people in business, marketing or management roles. It is also for people who are involved in the procurement and deployment of advanced applications, algorithms, and AI systems, and in policy making. Together, they create the digital products, services, and systems that shape our societies and daily lives. The book’s aim is to empower people to take responsibility, to ‘upgrade’ their skills for ethical reflection, inquiry, and deliberation. It introduces ethics in an accessible manner with practical examples, outlines of different ethical traditions, and practice-oriented methods_____________________________ResourcesEthics for People Who Work in Tech (Book): https://www.routledge.com/Ethics-for-People-Who-Work-in-Tech/Steen/p/book/9780367542436Ethics for People Who Work in Tech (Website that accompanies book): https://ethicsforpeoplewhoworkintech.com/Ethics as a Participatory and Iterative Process: https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2023/5/272289-ethics-as-a-participatory-and-iterative-process/fulltext____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. I am your host, Marco Ciappelli, here to walk you with open arms into the deep interplays at the intersection of technology, cybersecurity, and society.Today, we open the pages of the groundbreaking book "The New Technology State," meticulously penned by the veteran tech luminary, Bill Raduchel. With a resume boasting high-ranking roles in globally recognized companies such as Sun Microsystems and AOL Time Warner, and accolades including the CIO of the year, Bill stands as a fortress of knowledge and experience in the tech world, possessing insights forged from over sixty fruitful years on the front lines of the technological revolution. In this masterwork, the intersections of society and technology are explored with a profound depth, unraveling the threads of a prediction made over sixty years ago by the revered economist John Kenneth Galbraith, a prophecy which posited that the global elite would seize the ever-advancing computing technology to further deepen their vaults and amass unprecedented power.Drawing from rich personal encounters and dialogues with esteemed figures such as British Army officer turned MP, Tom Tugendhat, and media giant Paul Dacre, Bill paints a vivid picture of a world undergoing rapid and unrelenting change, a transformation facilitated by the relentless march of technology. His narratives vividly illustrate a society teetering on the brink, stretched to its limits by the pace of change which is seemingly only accelerating, spurred on by the democratization of technology creation. As we delve into their engrossing conversation, we witness a philosophical dance, navigating through the intricacies of technological advancements and their rippling effects on society. Bill's seasoned perspective leads us on a journey from the first encounter with a computer at a tender age of 15 to the dramatic transformations he has witnessed and engineered in the world of technology. With candid retrospections and poignant illustrations like the Viking’s thousand steel swords analogy, we are invited to ponder on the weighty implications of an increasingly fragile yet efficient society; a society united yet divided, caught in a delicate balance of power that might just be held in the hands of a few prodigiously talented individuals likened to the elite players in a professional sports team.In today's conversation, we traverse the technological landscape, touching on seemingly fantastical elements that have already become an intricate part of our daily realities, to the resonating echoes from the halls of Harvard where young Bill first grasped the prophetic insights of Galbraith. As I pick the brains of the man who has lived through the dazzling trajectory of the technological era, we open the floor to ponder on whether we stand on the precipice of revolution, as society grapples with changes that are seemingly too vast and rapid to fully comprehend. We find ourselves asking, was this level of change inevitable, or are we here because we failed to heed the warnings of those who saw what was coming?Join us as we unfold this rich tapestry of insights, experiences, and foresights into a world rapidly morphing under the influence of technology. Let us together navigate this brave new world, grasping the nuances and understanding the deep-seated ramifications of this technological era, guided by the wise reflections of Bill Raduchel, a man with an intimate understanding of the field.Dear listeners, as we unravel this tapestry of experiences and foresights, I encourage you to pause, reflect, and possibly redefine your understanding of society as we know it.Stay tuned, as we dive into a dialogue that navigates the thin line between the real and the digital world, a conversation laden with wisdom, rich narratives, and a deep exploration of our evolving society, here on the "Redefining Society Podcast."_____________________________About the BookThis book is about society—how it has changed and what technology is enabling us to do to ourselves.Sixty years ago, legendary economist John Kenneth Galbraith issued a grim prophecy that the global elite would harness the potential of the burgeoning computing revolution to accumulate even more wealth and power. His masterwork The New Industrial State redefined our perception of ourselves and our society. I am Marco Ciappelli, your inquisitive host, steering the thoughtful ship of the 'Redefining Society Podcast.' Today, we find ourselves traversing the intricate narratives in our monthly sojourn titled 'A Carbon, a Silicon, and a Cell walk into a Bar...'. Dr. Bruce Y. Lee accompanies me as we ponder over the fervid topics of our time, endeavoring to unravel the intricacies at the cusp of technology and humanity’s well-being.In today’s episodic exploration, we commence with a heart-heavy yet candid dialogue on the prevailing environmental calamities - events that don’t just shake our geographies but stir our collective consciousness, urging us to look deeper, to understand further, and to act responsibly. I share the platform with the meticulous Dr. Bruce Y. Lee, as we meander through tragic trails of wildfires that have scorched lands and imprinted irreparable marks on human and ecological landscapes. We intertwine this with reflections on the state of healthcare, questioning if advancements like telemedicine could stand tall as beacons of assistance in such times of distress.Together, we embark on a philosophical excavation, delving into the paradox of technology - the creator and the potential solver of modern dilemmas. Can technology extricate us from the predicaments it inadvertently puts us in? This inquisition takes us down paths less traveled as we analyze whether technology truly meets our essential needs, or if it merely burgeons unasked, sometimes unneeded, promising solutions to non-existent problems while turning a blind eye to pressing matters of the heart and earth. As we steer deeper, we find ourselves grappling with the overarching dilemma - the push and pull of technology. Dr. Lee urges us to discern between technology that spontaneously proliferates, inundating us with options we never asked for, and technology that emerges as a responsive force to existing issues. The dialogue doesn't shy away from holding a mirror to our society, asking if we are, indeed, nurturing innovations that genuinely tend to the wounds of the environment, health, and society.Listeners, as we venture forth, discerning the interplay of wildfires, environmental health, and the role technology plays in this grand tapestry, we invite you to muse with us. How can technology, an entity so pervasive in our lives, be channeled to not only remediate the consequences of calamities but to foresee, prevent, and safeguard the sanctity of life and environment? We thread this intricate discourse with a desire for solutions, not just in the face of wildfires but in addressing the ubiquity of microplastics, the imperatives of environmental health, and the latent opportunities residing in technology’s prudent application.Join us, as we muse on the pulsating realities of today’s world, teetering between despair and hope, chaos and order, urging you to ponder – where do we stand in this era of technological prowess? What priorities must guide our hand, and how do we chart a course that respects the delicate balance between humanity and the force of nature?Listen in as we meander through the captivating stories “At The Intersection Of Technology, Cybersecurity, and Society,” unraveling threads that bind our fate with that of technology. We invite you to engage, to share, and to be a part of this pivotal conversation that seeks not just to redefine society but to shape a future that harmonizes technology, health, and the vibrant canvas of human experience.Dive deep with us in this enriching episode, where musings aren’t just contemplations but a clarion call for reflection, understanding, and action. Join this intricate dance of ideas, where we are all explorers seeking paths of enlightenment, today on the 'Redefining Society Podcast.' Ep 64Are We Capturing Or Making Up Reality? Does Experience Even Matter Anymore In Photography And The Creation Of Our Personal Memories? | A Conversation with William Wu | Redefining Society with Marco Ciappelli

I'm Marco Ciappelli, and today's conversation goes beyond the pixels and data points to explore a realm that both fascinates and bewilders us—the world of Generative AI in the context of photography, art, and advertising.Generative AI is an entity unto itself, for it enables us to create photos that don't just replicate reality, but often transcend it. Imagine a world where one doesn't need to stand in front of the Eiffel Tower to be photographed there. A realm where you can immortalize a moment with a loved one who is no longer with us—crafted not by mere camera clicks but by algorithms. The digital and the "real" are becoming increasingly indistinguishable, as lines blur and boundaries fade.As we delve into this, we must ask ourselves: What does this mean for traditional photography? For the art of capturing a moment as it is? A craft which required meticulous understanding of lighting, posing, and the subtle interplay of colors now finds itself at a crossroads. And what of the world of modeling and advertising? Where does this put professional models and photographers who spend years perfecting their skill? Moreover, we cannot overlook the societal implications. The seductive ease of creating our own version of reality with a few clicks carries with it ethical questions and dilemmas. When reality itself becomes subjective, or even editable, we begin to lose touch with a common ground of shared experiences. In our desire for perfection, there's the risk of obliterating the raw, flawed beauty of real life. But let's not fall into an abyss of despair. Technology, after all, is a double-edged sword; it can isolate us but also bring us closer to experiences we might never have otherwise had. It democratizes opportunities but also raises concerns about authenticity. My guest today, William Wu, joins me to ponder these questions, offering a perspective that bridges business insights and philosophical quandaries. So, as we navigate this discourse, let's remind ourselves that we are virtually connected, not just by wires and Wi-Fi, but by a collective consciousness that continues to redefine society in ways that are both intriguing and unsettling.I invite you to lean in, listen, and let this conversation catalyze your own thoughts on how Generative AI is reshaping our understanding of what's real, what's possible, and what it means to be truly human in this ever-evolving digital landscape.Your curiosity is the key, and the conversation has just begun. Subscribe, share, and stay tuned for a dialogue that promises to provoke, challenge, and inspire. I am Marco Ciappelli, your guide through this intricate labyrinth. Today, we venture into the pressing reality that our children's lives are ever more public, ever more scrutinized, and ever more entangled with their digital identities. This digital sphere isn't a separate reality; it's an integral part of their lives, shaping their reputations, their self-perceptions, and their futures. In this digital age, the lines between the online world and "real life" are not just blurred—they are indistinguishable. Our kids grow up with likes, shares, and retweets as measures of their worth, all while wrestling with the big questions of identity and character development. How can they figure out who they really are when every action, every choice, every moment is up for public scrutiny? My guest today is Devorah Heitner, author of the definitive work "Growing Up in Public," a book that offers a crucial road map for parents to navigate this complex terrain with their children. Heitner uncovers how the digital world has irrevocably changed the rites of passage for our kids, focusing not just on the threats of exposure or cancel culture but the deeper issues of character and authenticity.Drawing from her extensive work and research—conversations with kids, parents, educators, and experts—Devorah equips us to cut through the digital noise and connect with our children on a meaningful level. Her book provides actionable strategies that emphasize character over consequences, guiding us to support our children as they navigate what it means to grow up publicly, both online and offline. So, are we bystanders in this digital narrative, or can we actively shape a more compassionate, more nuanced conversation that respects the fusion of technology and human vulnerability? As technology becomes even more integrated into our real lives, let's question, let's reflect, and let's redefine what it means to grow up in public.Listen, share, and subscribe! _____________________________About the BookThe definitive book on helping kids navigate growing up in a world where nearly every moment of their lives can be shared and comparedWith social media and constant connection, the boundaries of privacy are stretched thin. Growing Up in Public shows parents how to help tweens and teens navigate boundaries, identity, privacy, and reputation in their digital world. We can track our kids’ every move with apps, see their grades within minutes of being posted, and fixate on their digital footprint, anxious that a misstep could cause them to be “canceled” or even jeopardize their admission to college. And all of this adds pressure on kids who are coming of age immersed in social media platforms that emphasize “personal brand,” “likes,” and “gotcha” moments. How can they figure out who they really are with zero privacy and constant judgment? Devorah Heitner shows us that by focusing on character, not the threat of getting caught or exposed, we can support our kids to be authentically themselves.Drawing on her extensive work with parents and schools as well as hundreds of interviews with kids, parents, educators, clinicians, and scholars, Heitner offers strategies for parenting our kids in an always-connected world. We discuss the unresolved challenges and systemic barriers that make this an enduring issue with Nicole Schwartz from The Diana Initiative. In today's episode of "Redefining Society," I, Marco Ciappelli, dig deep into a conversation that is as pertinent as it is perennial—diversity and inclusion within the realm of technology and cybersecurity. It's a topic that prompts me to utter phrases like, "Why are we still talking about this?" and "I wish we didn't have to discuss it." These phrases are an acknowledgement of the dissonance between our rapid technological evolution and the sluggish moral progression in how we treat one another, both in society at large and within specialized communities. Why, you may ask, is this conversation appearing on "Redefining Society," a platform typically dedicated to musing on the societal implications of technology, rather than a specialized InfoSec or cybersecurity channel? The answer is simple: The issue of diversity and inclusion transcends the boundaries of any one field. Though today's discussion is deeply rooted in technology and cybersecurity, it is, at its core, a human issue, a societal challenge. Our guest today is Nicole Schwartz, the COO of the Diana Initiative, an organization founded to address issues affecting underrepresented gender minorities within the tech and cybersecurity spheres. Established informally during a lunch conversation at DEF CON—Hacker Summer Camp—the Diana Initiative started as a gathering point for like-minded individuals. It has since evolved into an organization of significant heft, hosting events and supporting budding professionals in the field. Why focus on the Diana Initiative today? Because when it comes to addressing the pressing issues of diversity and inclusion, this organization doesn't just walk the talk—it runs. It's an organization that has manifested change so palpably that it has faced "shutdowns" from fire marshals for exceeding capacity—ironically, a glaring testament to the unfulfilled needs and pent-up demands it seeks to address. The Diana Initiative is a reminder that inclusion is not just a word to be thrown around but a practice to be lived daily. It serves as a physical and conceptual space where marginalized voices can find resonance, away from the discordant echoes of an industry not built with them in mind. And so, in an age where our virtual identities often speak louder than our physical selves, the Diana Initiative provides an indispensable counterpoint, a reminder that the most significant firewalls we need to break down are not those made of codes and algorithms, but those constructed by prejudice, bias, and societal inertia.Stay with us as we delve into a conversation that aims to challenge and redefine society's understanding of technology, cybersecurity, and above all, humanity itself._____________________________ResourcesThe Diana Initiative: https://www.dianainitiative.org/The Diana Initiative Linktree: https://linktr.ee/dianainitiative____________________________To see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWatch the webcast version on-demand on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnYu0psdcllTUoWMGGQHlGVZA575VtGr9Are you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?👉 https://www.itspmagazine.com/advertise-on-itspmagazine-podcast Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. From social engineering to perceptual limitations, our digital realities are at a risk we have never seen before.Listen in as Marco and Sean explore a captivating debate around the nature of reality in the context of our interaction with AI. What we think is real, may not be real after all. How does that affect us as we continue to interact with increasingly sophisticated AI? In a world that often feels like a simulation, are we falling prey to AI's exploitation of our human cognitive operating rules?Marco and Sean also introduce us to the masterminds behind this groundbreaking research, Ben Sawyer, with his background in Applied Experimental Psychology and Industrial Engineering, and Matthew Canham, whose work spans cognitive neuroscience and human interface design. Their combined expertise results in a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between humans and machines, particularly in the current digital age where AI's ability to emulate human-like interactions has advanced dramatically. This thought-provoking episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the philosophical, psychological, and cybersecurity implications of AI's evolution. I am your host, Marco Ciappelli, and today's conversation is certain to ignite new perspectives on how society and technology are converging at a historic crossroads. Our guest, Emmanuel Daniel, has recently authored an intriguing new book titled "The Great Transition: The Personalization of Finance is Here". With a sweeping view of global economic dynamics, he outlines the profound transformations set to occur in the finance industry. The book provides rich insights into how our economies will evolve under the influence of digitization, offering key insights for founders, disruptors, and policy-makers in finance. What sets Emmanuel's work apart is his use of fascinating analogies, like the story of the ice trade, to illustrate the level of personalization we're poised to experience, the likes of which we've never seen before. He introduces the concept of the "financialization of everything," proposing that the pervasive impact of digitization will boost receptivity towards emerging trends such as cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and gaming, thereby transforming economies and reshaping societal norms.Today's conversation is bound to be a global one, touching on culture, technology, and everyday human life. We'll delve into the journey Emmanuel undertook in crafting this book, the role of financial institutions in this imminent era, and the progressive shift from platform era to an age of personalization in finance. Moreover, we'll explore how technology is enabling this great transition and the implications it will have on users across different generations. The conversation will provide insights into how society, as we know it, has evolved from the communal to the individualistic and how this trajectory is being accelerated by technological advancements.Lastly, we'll touch on Emmanuel's concept of the "financialization of everything," a paradigm that views finance as the thread binding together our increasingly individualized lives and experiences.Thank you so much for joining us for this episode of Redefining Society.
