It’s been a long journey since June went home in January, but Season 14 ends in Las Vegas on the stage of Drag Race Live. The final 5 are given Leland produced songs and some backup dancers to perform with for about a minute and change, which just means more time spent watching RuPaul avoid eye contact with nearly everybody. Symone brings denim to the winners circle, Kornbread gets a nice consolation prize, Michelle gets to present a key, and ultimately Camden and Willow face off in a final performance that all felt very pre-determined. While a music video for the semifinal challenge of the season is a little predictable, this episode certainly was not. Angie’s two white feet continue to trip her up in the choreography and Bosco, no longer in a corset and panties, instead serves suburban space mom. Camden tiptoes her way to the top, Daya finds herself in a sweet spot, and while you can’t spell “star” without “rats,” that doesn’t save rodent on the runway Willow from landing in the bottom against her best supporting bestie. RuPaul and Michelle have had their turns in the hot seat, but this season it’s Roast Mathews! The Top 7 take turns taking down Ross with, as per usual, varying degrees of success. Despite Dulce Sloan’s Masterclass, DeJa still puts her Bigfoot in her mouth, Daya is off beat, and Jorgeous just doesn’t have any fun. Meanwhile Angie serves pizza, Camden can’t stay out of Ross’s butt, Willow is saved by the lips, and Bosco, after winning the reading mini-challenge, redeems herself with a reading maxi-challenge and one sharp little number on the runway. A three-way lip sync sends Principal Skye home early, but at least she can hold Jorgeous’s hand as a double elimination also means its time for this season’s lip sync assassin to punch out. This week the top 7 star in a jukebox musical of RuPaul staples transformed into a masterful Moulin Rouge-inspired megamix. Lady Camden makes the most of a hairy situation, Willow Pill soars as a one scene queen, and Leland gives Best Supporting Top energy. DeJa walks dogs, Angie gets a Bea Arthur moment and Daya drunk-syncs. Unfortunately Bosco’s Saltine is a little dry and Jorgeous’s face doesn’t always keep up with her hips, sending the two into a lip sync that threatened to leave a vacancy. Honestly Mary’s, this extra special episode was actually pretty extra special, in no small part because of Principal Skye’s workroom viewing party of this lip sync smackdown. Last week’s unfortunate seven duke it out in a race to the bottom, and we finally get to see some strategic gameplay that’s not just about the drama. Daya demands respect, Willow serves just enough and never too much (air guitar, that is), Jorgeous stops by to top a threeway, Angie serves enough stage presence to win two lip syncs (some would even say she did!), Camden earns a big hug and an award-worthy camera angle for the best performance of the night, and it all comes down to a beaten down Bosco against the piñata of the season, jazzy Jasmine, who spends the whole episode losing lip syncs and still leaves with a smile on her face. Snatch Game rarely goes off without a hitch, but this season it barely got off the ground. Queens like Bosco and Willow have been making smart choices all season, but misstepped into muted takes on Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow. Angie’s Tammie was more beige than Brown while Camden made the tragic choice to be William Shakespeare (and not to be Joanna Lumley). Daya’s Ozzy and Jorgeous’s Ilana Glazer, well, weren’t, and Betsy DeVos tanked like Maxine Waters a few seasons ago, so fingers crossed we don’t get a Nancy Pelosi on Season 15. That being said, Michelle’s Investigation on the runway and Ru’s heavy kid gloves this week made for a refreshing take on a tanked challenge, and DeJa Skye finally nabbed a big win for her Lil Jon. Given how off the rails this one went, we had no choice but to instead spend more time celebrating Jujubee’s Cher on Drag Race UK vs the World, and of course break down Bob the Drag Queen’s formula for a good Snatch Game performance. One of the goopiest seasons of Drag Race has a bit of a droopy conclusion as our final four lip sync for the crown and a real doozy of a musical collaboration with RuPaul. Baga, Blu, Mo and Juju run out of small talk just in time for the eliminated queens to pop by for one last runway. Untucked stirs up some old fashioned reunion style drama between Pangina and Jimbo, but it’s Lemon who gets the last laugh. In the end, Mo takes Baga out like a domino while Blu flexes and reflexes her lip sync muscles to defeat the Americans and nab it for Northern Ireland. The first international all-star season kicks off with your standard issue talent show, and to be honest, a few standard issue performances from an otherwise delightful pack of familiar faces. We couldn’t choose just one holiday movie to queen out on this year, so we chose three–an old favorite of ours, this year’s Popular Mainstream Gay Holiday Movie and a camp classic that is destined to be a future tradition. The perennial Monsters of Rock challenge usually leads to more than a few broken guitar strings by the end of the floor show. This season was no exception, though to be fair, things fell apart for Glam Rot long before they got on stage, and the real show was the encore in the Cauldron between Sigourney, Merrie, Jade, and Betty when she could get a word in edgewise. Meanwhile, Dahli finally nabs the win they came here for and leads Zenith to a clear and drama-free victory. To finish out this year’s Alright Scary, we’re revisiting Scream’s less impressive little sister “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” This movie unfortunately did not age well, and while we’re always excited for late 90’s nostalgia, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s heel-length dress, Elsa’s implacable anger, and the quick clean-up of those crabs were just some of the things we couldn’t get hooked on. Sarah Michelle Gellar is a bright spot in the cast, but we completely forgot about Anne Heche and the football star and fisherman in this movie look like Pilates instructors. (But Freddie Prinze Jr. in that tank top can haul his crabs into our tugboat any day.) This may be a summer misadventure worth forgetting but it was a fun way to wrap up the spooky season! There’s blood in the water for this week’s 60’s themed vampire beach party, pairing the monsters up as moonbathers with a mouthful. Season 2 standout and Resurrection runner-up Dahli casually strolls back into the competition, but the parent-child reunion with Astrud is short-lived this season when her bikini killer leaves a salty taste in the judges mouth. Bitter Betty is giving Elusive Elizabeth while Koco Caine can’t even with Merrie, though both are saved by the Boulets.
