S1 Ep 18Episode 18: Courage and Belief — Trusting It Will All Work Out [Featuring Marisol Colette A.K.A .The Fashion Therapist]
EDuring this very powerful episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast, I talk w/ Marisol Colette AKA The Fashion Therapist. Marisol is the owner of Sol Reflection, as well as the co-host of the Reading Aloud Podcast.Marisol's journey is one of courage, strength, resilience, and resolve. She was diagnosed w/ cancer immediately after leaving the VA (and their federal health insurance benefits) behind.Marisol and I talk about our journeys out of community mental health, and Marisol shares her story about leaving a "safe, secure" job at the VA that paid extraordinarily well and offered fantastic benefits but was emotionally and physically exhausting.Instead of panicking and going back to a job that was no longer satisfying, she trusted her judgment, intuition, and ingenuity, creating something very unique and unbelievably special within the therapy world. Marisol created her business and stepped into becoming a "fashion therapist." She incorporates trauma and body-based therapy to help people embrace their bodies and feel confident in their clothing — incredibly creative to say the least!Fashion Therapist? What does that even mean? How does that work?Marisol and I talk about her creative genius and process, as well as both of our determination to do things differently. Some topics include: Thinking you can't make it or that your ideas are too "big" The desire and determination to never go back to community mental health Our success stories while doing things "differently" Our struggles to get to where we're at -------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank CPH & Associates for sponsoring this episode.Get a quote and apply at cphins.com/allthingsMentioned in this episode:A Thanks to Our Sponsor, The Receptionist for iPad!Visit the website for The Receptionist for iPad here! S1 Ep 15Episode 15: Doing Things Differently — Pay What You Can [Featuring Tara Holmquist]
EI'm sure most of you hear the phrases "charge your worth and scarcity mindset" all the time.Though I believe in getting paid for the hard work that we do, not all business models are the same.I talk with Tara Holmquist, a clinical psychologist in Wisconsin about her "pay what you can model" in private practice.Tara is an attachment-focused psychologist, meaning that everything is about the relationship and trusting the client's insight.Tara may be doing things differently than a lot of business owners and we discuss why this feels so unbelievably important for her. She believes that the client knows what works for them and that honoring this, it actually creates more trust and buy-in to the therapeutic process. We talk about the common misconceptions people may have about a business model like this including: How do you set your fees? Are you able to pay your bills? How do you trust your clients to choose what they pay? What made you decide to run your business like this? -------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------A Thanks to Our Sponsor!I would also like to thank CPH & Associates for sponsoring this episode. This episode of the all things private practice podcast is being brought to you by CPH & Associates. EScared about leaving your Community Mental Health Job? I was too! I think we all are to some degree. It makes sense that when we feel comfortable and "secure," we struggle to embrace the fear of the unknown no matter how badly we want to.Community Mental Health definitely has a role to play but unfortunately, the system is broken, which means you end up struggling with: Resources, $$, time, and BURN OUT! E"Why would anyone hire me? How is it even possible to leave community mental health and start a private practice?" Have you had similar thoughts and let them prevent you from starting your own business? You're definitely not alone. Leaving security, consistency, and stepping into the unknown can be really scary when starting a private practice. In this episode, Christal Pennic (the host of the #GetNeckID Podcast and my good friend) and I talk about how she's prevented herself from taking the leap for far too long—all because of IMPOSTOR SYNDROME! Christal shares her journey from community mental health into her private practice. We talk about impostor syndrome, techniques to manage it, and how to pursue your goals and dreams even when it feels scary and impossible, as well as Christal's experiences with being a BIPOC therapist and how that impacted her impostor syndrome and decision to take the leap into private practice.More about Christal Pennic, LPC, MHSP:Christal Pennic (or “LPC Chris” in the podcast world) is a licensed professional counselor in Nashville, TN. S1 Ep 11Episode 11: Don't Be The Applebee's Of Therapy — You're The Expert!
EChoosing your niche is a lot like setting yourself up as the expert in a particular field, population, set of struggles, or way of working.Last year when I started talking about Impostor Syndrome on FB lives, webinars, etc., I was just talking about my experiences. The more I talked about it, the more I was being viewed as "the impostor syndrome expert." All of a sudden, I was speaking at conferences, on podcasts, coaching courses, and more!Too often I hear, "I'm a trauma-informed therapist who works with A, B, C..."If you don't know who you're marketing your services to, then how could they possibly find you or call you? Why would someone pay you out of pocket if you don't proclaim to be the "expert" in a certain struggle, population, or technique? When you ask yourself, "do I really need to have a niche," I think the resounding answer is YES!!If you work in a really saturated area, how do you stand out if you work with "everyone?" How often do we see therapists asking the same questions over and over in all of the FB groups? "Why isn't my phone ringing?" "How do I get more self-pay clients?" "But, won't I exclude clients if I focus on a "specific population?" Listen to this episode of the All Things Private Practice Podcast so you can gain clarity on the importance of choosing your niche, and why I think our niche is a version of ourselves.-------------------------------------------------------🎙️ Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast here: www.allthingspractice.com/all-things-private-practice-podcast🎙️Spotify: atppod.com/spotify🎙️Apple Podcasts: atppod.com/apple🎙️Google Podcasts: atppod.com/google🗨️ Join the All Things Private Practice FB Community: www.facebook.com/groups/privatepracticebuilding----------------------------Mentioned in this episode:A Thanks to Our Sponsor, The Receptionist for iPad!I would also like to thank The Receptionist for iPad for sponsoring this episode. S1 Ep 4Episode 4: Money Mindset Real Talk: None Of That "Charge What You're Worth Shit
Therapists tend to struggle with money, setting rates, and understanding the value of what they offer. Hey... We never had business training, so it makes sense. How many times have you answered a phone call from a potential client and said, "My rate is 150, but my sliding scale is 30-150?" Your own anxiety caused you to immediately offer a sliding scale without being asked for one.The mental health profession is crucial, necessary, and undervalued. We as a profession tend to be our own worst enemies when understanding the value that we offer. We all have our own money traumas, fears, cultural narratives...As a therapist and entrepreneur who used to have a GIGANTIC gambling addiction, money has always been triggering.Whether you are saying...You don't deserve to make moneyYou don't get into this field to make moneyTalking about money makes me uncomfortableCharging money goes against my valuesIf you're a licensed therapist, then you have...At least a masters degreeThousands of hours towards your licensureContinuing ed hoursStudent loan debtThousands of supervision hoursYet you still can't understand that your time is valuable. We don't charge for 60-minute increments of our time. We charge for the transformation. If you're still reading this, ask yourself how much you spend on your own self-care and what it does for you? Most people say something like "I spend $100/week on a massage + tip."It makes me feel relaxedIt's my me-timeIt's self-careIt helps with pain and anxietyAs therapists, we offer ^^^ and muchhhhhhhhhhhhh more.Let's start to understand that we are allowed to charge fees, enforce cancellations and no-shows, and more importantly, MAKE MONEY AND HELP PEOPLE SIMULTANEOUSLY!–––––––––––––––––––––🎙️Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast🎙️Spotify🎙️Apple🎙️YouTube Music▶️ YouTube✈️ Learn about Retreats🗨️ Join the free Empowered Escape FB Community🗨️ Join the free All Things Private Practice FB Community–––––––––––––––––––––Thanks to Our Sponsor: The Receptionist for iPad!✨ The Receptionist for iPadThanks to The Receptionist for iPad for sponsoring this episode. The Receptionist for iPad is a HIPAA-ready digital check-in system that eliminates the need to walk back and forth from your office to the waiting room to see if your next appointment has arrived.
