Competition. The name of the game in late summer and early fall is competition with all the bait in the lake. Bait has exploded in most lakes across the country and you are trying to feed a group of fish while they sit at a Golden Coral full of bait. It's a tough time of year but there are still plenty of opportunities to have great productive days on the water. Snap jigging a variety of baits is a great way to make your baits stand out and scream "I am dying...come eat me"! Do you swivel your cranks? Jigs? Do you swivel when you connect leader material to main line? Or do you just snap? This weeks episode we answer a listeners question on the proper use of swivels and what type of swivels we use. Nope... we don't claim to be right on this one, we just give our opinion. It's hot and the water is warm. Fish can be tough to find for most people. As the water warms to the upper 70's and low 80's fish move to the thermocline part of the water column and they seek the comfort of the cooler oxygenated water. Bait fish and other prey move to this same area and the suspending bite turns on. In this weeks podcast we discuss a recent tournament where most everyone targeted those thermocline fish. What size crank do you reach for in the middle of summer? Do you go for the 3 inch jig or the 4 inch? This time of year it's important to know the cycle of the bait and the ecosystem you fish. Plenty of food for fish to eat means you have to either match the hatch OR be different and draw their attention. Reaction strikes on big baits is a great way to catch summer fish. Sometimes a smaller bait and slower presentation is the key for well fed fish. Lets talk bait size and what consideration you should give that.

From the Cutters for jerk baits to Bad Shads to the Flicker Shad, it's tough to compete with production and price. Within the hour the wind is 20-30 sustained out of the wrong direction and you are now battling to catch fish for two days. What ever doesn't kill you...makes you stronger. In fishing the painful is often times the best lesson we can learn. When Plan A and B fail most have no idea what Plan C is. You can catch 20, 16 inch fish by casting the same hump every year and you feel like a rock star. Your neighbor who fishes all over the lake every year is a Plan C kinda guy and instead of 20 fish he catches 50 and he does it rain or shine. Late spring and early summer is a perfect time to get out the slip bobbers. One of the most effective ways to work tight areas of structure for big big fish. This technique is often overlooked by tournament anglers due to it's slow pace, but this versatile way of fishing can be ultra productive. Open water is here and the Walleye are moving away from the rivers and the spawning grounds and starting to school up and transition into the early summer pattern. Fish are scattered and on the move. Here today and no where to be found tomorrow. Big fish can be tough to find unless you are fishing early morning or the night bite. You need to transition how you fish and where you fish. Not only daily but sometimes hourly. How you catch fish at 7 am may not be how you catch fish at 1 pm. Live bait may not be the best presentation this time of year. Rigging your boat is highly personal. A bracket here and a rod holder there. It is all about personal feel and what you have seen others do. Multiple rods used to optimize the number of baits that hit the water in a given area. Aggressive shallow water tactics and less live bait produce more tournament wins then the traditional live bait presentations. In this episode we talk reaction strikes and what that means. As we watch summer in our rear view mirror we notice the fish maybe a little harder to catch. A little harder to find. This bait is my favorite bait! Two years later you can't get a bite on the same bait. What changed? In this podcast we discuss the theory of fish becoming desensitized to baits. It's hot. Really hot. It's the dog days of summer and the old guys have hung up their Walleye rods till fall. Not so fast! Walleyes don't just disappear or go on a hunger strike because of the heat. They just move and there is more competition with plenty of bait. This time of year is when you really start to learn about Walleye fishing.

It's midsummer and your bite close to shore has vanished. Traditional Walleye wisdom would have you believe the fish are deep in cooler water. That is partially true, they are in the deep water but they are suspended only a few feet down. During the hot summer days those fish slide out from night time feeding locations and they suspend over deep water and they relate to pods of bait fish suspended over the same deep water. It's summertime and the bite is on. Little fish abound and bigger fish are a little tougher to find. Tournaments are in full swing and boats are starting to troll for suspended fish. Plenty of big fish are still to be had casting to structure.

It's that time of year when trolling for suspended fish and fish relating to submerged structure requires some trolling skills. Crankbaits are a great choice, but sometimes Walleyes want a little thump and a little meat to entice them to bite. Trolling spinners is a great way to catch big Walleyes on all types of water and a tournament winning tool to have at your disposal.

Early spring and the fish are starting to feed. The only problem is the weather doesn't always cooperate and sometimes those fish can be slow to bite. Slowing down your presentation and putting some meat in front of them can be the difference between a three fish day and a thirty fish day. In this episode we discuss live bait rigging!
