Elephant Seals are the largest seal, or pinniped, on Earth. When you look at the face of a Mountain Gorilla, you are looking back at our own reflection. Gorilla DNA matches 98.4% of humans, and only the Chimpanzee is a tad closer (we share 98.8% DNA). One of our closest relatives, Mountain Gorillas were almost on the brink of extinction, but are now slowly recovering with a focused conservation plan and with the help of ecotourism. This week Angie welcomed back Dr. Barney Long to discuss the plight of the critically-endangered Sumatran Rhinoceros. Dr. Long is involved in the project to save this species and it was announced on September 20, 2018 an ambitious plan to save these animals. A group of conservation groups are working to bringing the remaining 80 or so Sumatran rhinos into captivity to allow these animals to breed. Theo Van Noort is a Research Associate at the New Zealand Institute of Plant and Food Research. He currently works on entomology, bombiculture and crop pollination, and previously his Master’s research at the University of Auckland examined invasive wasp populations and their effect on pollination. He went to the Antipodes Islands in 2018 to evaluate the effectiveness of the Million Dollar Mouse Project and to evalaute its work on rehabilitating insect populations.
